Student Profiles Mike Ratcliffe School: Ruskin Sports College, Crewe Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying Mike reckons bricklaying is a good trade to be in because there’s always high demand for skilled workers. He learned his basic skills at Level 1 and by the end of his Level 2 course he could build cavity walls, sloping garden walls and internal decorative arches, all relevant skills he used during work experience with a builder. Now a Level 3 student, Mike says: “Coming to Reaseheath has been great because you learn so many skills. The tutors really understand the industry because they’ve all worked in it.”

Mike Potts Level 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery School: Fallibroome High School, Macclesfield Mike has always wanted to work in the construction industry and has spent three years making sure he gains the best possible qualifications. He’s worked his way up from Level 1 to Level 3, progressing from constructing basic joints to building a roof complete with dormer windows. As these are exactly the skills required by employers, he’s confident that he has a good career ahead. He says: “I like working with wood. Building an arbour with green oak was a great opportunity. We did everything by hand using traditional methods.”

Our Accolades OFSTED

The Inspectors commented:

Reaseheath College continues to raise its teaching standards - and it’s a great hit with students, a positive Ofsted inspection has proved.

“Reaseheath’s residential provision for students aged between 16 and 18 years is outstanding.”

Reaseheath was awarded Outstanding or Good in all the subject areas inspected under a new, more rigorous, Common Inspection Framework early in 2010. The inspectors found numerous outstanding features and concluded that students’ achievements and the quality of education and training was continuing to rise. The new inspection framework has definitely raised the bar and this was proof that Reaseheath has succeeded and will continue to bring in new ways of meeting and exceeding requirements. In June 2013 the college underwent another Ofsted inspection regarding the Care Standards Commission which is responsible for ensuring the safeguarding of young people and vulnerable adults. The inspection report revealed Reaseheath’s to be outstanding in all areas; overall effectiveness, outcomes for young people, quality of service, leadership and management, and safeguarding were all judged to be at the highest level.

“All staff and students demonstrate an active part in ensuring that students are protected from harm.” “Staff and students demonstrate a clear commitment to equality and an unequivocal acceptance of everyone’s differences.” “Students are highly committed to their academic and social learning programmes, and clearly benefit from the strong support from the welfare team and safeguarding officers.” “Students are highly self-aware and able to recognise and secure the help and support they need.” “Students and staff maintain consistently high expectations of behaviour and all parties are clear of the sanctions attached to unacceptable behaviour.” “Students are strong drivers for change and development and feel well listened too - they regularly meet within various forums to share ideas and plan service developments.”

“College leavers enjoy very positive prospects, with 90% of leavers going on to Higher Education programmes or employment.” “Students confirm that their academic year in residence has met or exceeded their expectations, and that the college has a high regard with employers and higher education providers.” “Staff and students clearly share and promote a common vision of excellence within the residential provision.” “The level of communication between college and home is exemplary.” “Students feel safe on campus and their welfare is constantly a primary consideration of staff.” “There is a very strong commitment by all college staff and students to a zero tolerance of bullying, in all its forms.”

Other Accolades Outstanding grade in the Framework for Excellence which grades colleges in a similar way to other public services such as health trusts and local authorities -- Matrix, quality standard for information, advice and guidance services -- Member of Landex, the land based colleges’ consortium -- Network champion for Dairy within the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink -- Education provider for the dairy industry’s new global training programme for the next generation of dairy technologists -- Engineering Skills Academy -- National Skills Academy provider status for the Outdoor Industry
