We have nearly 7,500 students from across the UK and from many different countries. Most of our students like being in the great outdoors and have similar interests, so it’s easy to make friends from lots of departments. Many of our full-time students live on campus and tell us that it’s like being part of one big family where

everyone looks after each other but has fun at the same time. Reaseheath’s campus is set in a beautiful rural setting one mile from the great market town of Nantwich. We are an hour away from Liverpool, Manchester, Derby and Birmingham and we are close to Stoke-on-Trent, Macclesfield, Shrewsbury and Telford. We have fabulous college grounds with big lawns and a lake - great for sitting out during the summer - and our sports facilities include an indoor climbing wall, gym, sports pitches, a commercial golf course and indoor and outdoor riding arenas. Her Majesty officially opened two buildings: the indoor riding arena at Reaseheath’s Equestrian Centre and Centrepoint, our library, student services and learning resource centre.

Our courses have more of a practical side to them than courses in sixth forms and some other colleges. If you have an interest in subjects such as biology, physics or maths why not explore this with one of our courses like animal management, sports studies or engineering? After you have completed your GCSEs there are two routes of study available to you at Reaseheath:

Full Time study Courses run at different levels (Entry Level - Level 3) dependent on your previous qualifications and experience (see table*). Please check course tables for the specific subjects at GCSE you require and visit our website for full course information including work experience/placements. If you are between the age of 16 and 19 studying full-time at Reaseheath your programme of learning will be made up of a number of components:

You will -- Study for a main qualification that is listed in the prospectus -- Continue your studies in Maths and English, either through studying GCSE or Functional Skills -- Complete an extra qualification(s) that will help you gain employment in your selected vocational area -- Undertake work experience which will develop employability skills and improve your employment prospects -- Develop your personal and social skills

Part Time study while in employment -- Reaseheath College offers apprenticeship programmes at levels 2 and 3. These programmes allow you to be employed and also to gain new qualifications by attending college, usually one day a week (see page 102 for further details).

Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma/ Diploma/Extended Diploma Equivalent to 1-3 â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Aâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Levels and accepted by the majority of universities to get you onto a Higher Education course - degree or foundation degree.

Level 2 Diploma/Certificate If you successfully complete this course you may move onto the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma/ Diploma/Extended Diploma.

Foundation Learning (Level 1) Completing this course means you will gain a Work-based Certificate Level 1 qualification, and you may be able to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma/Certificate.

Foundation Learning (Entry Level) After Foundation Learning (Entry Level) you could go straight to a Foundation Learning (Level 1) Programme in Agriculture, Animal Care, Horse Care, Engineering/ Motor Vehicle, Horticulture, Countryside, Adventure Sports/ Sports, Food Technology or Floristry here at Reaseheath.

Reaseheath College If you know which course you are interested in and are in Year 11 or above, here are the steps that you need to take to get a place at Reaseheath College!

Stage 1 Apply online at www.reaseheath. ac.uk, complete a downloadable application form or complete the application form at the back of this prospectus. If you need another form, call our Customer Service Team 01270 613242 or email enquiries@reaseheath.ac.uk and we will post one out to you.

Stage 2 If you haven’t applied online please send your completed application form to Reaseheath College, Nantwich, Cheshire, CW5 6DF, writing ‘Application Form’ on the envelope.

Once we have received your application form, we will write to you with the date for an interview when you will meet the tutor of your chosen subject. If you have not already visited the college on one of our course open events, you’ll also be able to have a good look around your chosen course area.

In the Summer term we will send you a Student Information Pack. This will explain when you need to arrive to enrol on your course, details of transport and accommodation and what you’ll need to bring with you when you start at college.

Stage 4 We will write to you making you a conditional offer (depending on grades) of a place at Reaseheath College. You will need to write back accepting the place if you still want to start your course in September.

Studying at

Reaseheath Studying on the right course and having the correct support is very important. At your interview you will be given more information on studying at Reaseheath College and how you can access any financial or learning support. We can also advise you about transport to college or about staying in one of our halls of residence. Following your interview you should receive an offer of a place at College. In the Summer Term you will be sent information on how to enrol for September 2014. Joining Reaseheath couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be easier but you can contact us at any point to discuss any questions you may have.

Transport We have college buses picking up from points near and far and we will always do our best to help students with travel arrangements. We are near to the main line train station at Crewe and there is also a station in Nantwich itself. We have a bus that collects students from both Crewe and Nantwich train stations. When you attend our information events you will be given information on current bus and train routes.

Finance Anyone can apply for financial help and you may be successful provided you meet certain criteria. You can apply for money to help with your accommodation or travel costs or even your equipment and books! If you are a mature student there are ways for you to gain financial support or secure your own loan to support you through your course.

Enrichment

Although the majority of our fulltime students travel to college daily, we have on-site residential accommodation for 635 students, fully supported by a safeguarding team. Anyone from the age of 16 may apply for a residential place and a bursary may be available to help with costs. Places are limited so please ask for up to date details once you have been offered a place.

Reaseheath has residential places for students who require facilities for the disabled. These rooms will be allocated on assessment of disability; however, we have no provision in the Halls of Residence for students who need specialist medical or nursing care.

Halls of Residence Our Halls of Residence are all situated on campus. Breakfast, lunch and evening meals are provided each day in the dining hall. You can visit a typical student room and find out what it is like to live on campus if you attend one of our Course Information Events or at your Interview.

Student Association All students are members of the Reaseheath Student Association who work alongside Student Services to organise a range of exciting social activities on-site including discos, karaoke and live bands as well as fun offsite activities such as bowling, go-karting and cinema visits. RAG (Raising and Giving) week is action packed and raises lots of money for charity. Over the last 3 years Reaseheath College students raised over ÂŁ30,000 for local charities.

Accommodation fees are based on a full academic year, excluding half terms, Christmas and Easter breaks. They are charged on a termly basis. Some halls also have a self-catering kitchen designated to a number of students. Students are encouraged to bring their own bed linen and to launder it in the facilities provided. However, where this is not possible, bed linen may be hired and laundered by the College at a small charge.

Reaseheath Student Support Information, advice and guidance Reaseheath is a safe and stimulating environment for you to learn, work and enjoy student life! We offer a range of support to all students, through your course tutor, our Student Services/Welfare office and Learning Skills Centre (Centrepoint).

Student Welfare Office The Student Welfare Service is available to all students who may be experiencing problems while at college. Problems can range from homesickness, bullying, difficulties

with coursework, financial difficulties, health issues or family problems. Whatever it may be, we can help, either to talk things through or to put you in touch with the relevant people. The College Counselling Service can help with specific problems on a regular basis if you need support. Foundation Learning We are committed to providing opportunities for all members of the community to learn, develop, and fulfil their ambitions. We currently offer a range of courses: `` Part time Pre-Entry programme (see page 16) `` Full time Entry programme (see page 16) `` Full time Level 1 programmes in a range of subjects (see page 17) On these foundation courses you will be fully supported to achieve your goals, progress to the next stage, and gain more independence. The courses are designed to give you options, recognition, and very importantly, real qualifications for your achievements. Our tutors are very experienced in supporting you with any learning difficulties or disabilities which may affect you, and we can help you achieve your very best.

We understand that settling in at college can sometimes seem worrying so we offer transition days before you start your course, making the conversion to college life as rewarding as possible. `` Pre-Entry and Entry Level learners are based in the ‘Weaver Centre’ which was specifically designed by staff and students and includes classrooms and changing facilities. You can also use the purpose built facilities offered throughout campus and used by all our curriculum areas. ` ` Employability skills and personal responsibility are emphasised on all Foundation courses. These include timekeeping, understanding body language, dealing with other people, handling conflict wisely, problem solving, building confidence, raising self esteem, taking responsibility for the welfare of others, personal presentation, interview skills, anger management and Functional Skills (English, Maths and ICT). `` At the end of the year we will help you prepare for the transition onto higher level courses. You can try out Animal Care, Horticulture, Agriculture and Countryside in this exciting programme. We will keep in contact with your parent or carer all of the time so that everyone is involved in making your life at college enjoyable and successful. Your needs are fully assessed before you start and we put a programme in place to make sure that all your requirements are met from the first day.

From 1 to 3 years depending on needs, ability and progress

You do not need exam passes to start but you do need to be at entry level in literacy and numeracy. You will have a least one interview and an assessment of your literacy and numeracy and support needs before you are offered a place.

You can progress onto Foundation Level Entry Level 3 and Level 1 courses

As well as enjoying practical activities in the above areas, you will continue to study reading, writing, numbers and computers. We will help you to develop your personal and social skills and work with you to write your own Individual Learning Plan, so you can work out what you want to do next. You will also have the chance to go on a two night study tour.

This introductory qualification in agriculture could help you get a satisfying job and could lead on to an exciting career. The course is very practical. You will spend half your time developing your skills and techniques, sometimes on the college farm and sometimes on local farms.

Level 2 Diploma Agriculture

This is an excellent, one year, all-round course that is ideal if you want to be involved with the day to day practical work on a farm. You will be able to take part in farm experience weeks, working on our many farm enterprises.

Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in A combination of C/D/E grades at Agriculture GCSE level (or equivalent) or Level 3 Workbased Diploma in Agriculture A Foundation (Level 1) course in Agriculture

This course is ideal whether you come from a farming background or not. You will enjoy lots of practical work on Reaseheath’s high welfare dairy, sheep and pig units. You will also carry out relevant work experience on well run, commercial farms so you get broad experience of different farming practices.

Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma Agriculture

A one year course equivalent to one ‘A’ level, this Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma will give you an excellent broad understanding of all areas of the agricultural industry.

Level 3 Diploma Agriculture

A two year course equivalent to two ‘A’ levels, the well recognised Level 3 Diploma will give you an excellent broad understanding of all areas of the agricultural industry. During your first year you will concentrate on learning the basic principles of agriculture, crop and animal science, and gain essential machinery and estate skills.

2 years full-time with a work experience period

Apprenticeship in Agriculture with Functional Skills

You will enjoy practical sessions on the college farm’s commercial units and at other successful local farms. This will be combined with classroom theory and business management. You will have the opportunity to join a study tour abroad usually to North America - and to look at relevant businesses in the UK.

Level 2 Apprenticeship Agriculture

Available for those aged 16 and over, this is a great opportunity for you to ‘earn as you learn’ and combines working at a paid job in a farm or related business with spending one day a week at Reaseheath gaining well recognised qualifications.

A two year course which combines 24 months sound agricultural understanding with (1 day per technical skills, building on the experience week) and knowledge you have already. Available for those aged 18 and over, this is your opportunity to ‘earn as you learn’, combining work on a farm or a similar job with one day a week at Reaseheath.

Student Profiles Phillip Gleave Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture School: Holmes Chapel Comprehensive Following a year of ‘A’ level study, Phil decided to follow a more specific route to help him manage his family’s dairy farm. He is keen to grow the business and may progress onto our dairy degree. At college he has been introduced to commercial sheep and pig management and learned more about crop management. He has also been on study tours to look at farming under differing conditions. Phil says: “I’ve learned loads but the best thing has been making new friends who enjoy the same things as me.”

Amy Bowman Level 2 Diploma in Agriculture School: St Peter and St Paul Catholic College, Widnes Amy originally wanted to be a veterinary nurse but so enjoyed working with our farm livestock that she’s now decided to become a farmer! Inspired by stock duties on our high welfare pig unit, she hopes to take her interest further through work experience in Britain and eventually in Australia. A complete newcomer to agriculture, she has also learned to milk our dairy herd and helped to deliver lambs. Amy says: “I’ve loved the course because it’s so practical. Student Profiles Ben Darley Level 2 Diploma in Land Based Technology School: Mary Webb School and Science College Shrewsbury Ben is an apprentice agricultural engineering technician with Pontesbury Tractors, Shropshire’s main Case IH dealer. He is being supported through his course by his employers and is continuing to work for the company part-time alongside his studies. Ben gives his course full marks for its relevant training and practical sessions. He says: “This course gives you a good grounding of basic skills and the facilities and staff are excellent. But the best thing about Reaseheath is its vibe - there’s a good learning atmosphere but you can have fun too.”

Thanks to a successful partnership between Reaseheath’s Animal Centre and Church Farm, Thurstaston, serious animal care students have the chance to study on the Wirral. Set in 60 acres, with beautiful views over the River Dee and North Wales, Church Farm is not only an open farm, with visitors coming from far and wide to see the animals and enjoy the surroundings, but is also a working organic farm growing fruit, vegetables and Christmas trees. If you become a Church Farm student you will be taught in the classroom by Reaseheath staff and you will receive lots of practical experience by working with animals including meerkats, rabbits, guinea pigs, donkeys, a horse, sheep, pigs, alpaca, goats, poultry and dogs. By working with Reaseheath College, Church Farm ensures all farm animals get first-class care and attention and young people receive important job-specific training. We are delighted to offer this Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) regulated course, which follows on from our very successful Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants. You must gain this Level 3 qualification to become an RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurse. The qualification was formerly offered as an NVQ qualification in Veterinary Nursing and is awarded by Central Qualifications (CQ).

This demanding Level 3 course is designed to lead to careers in the animal care industry and related areas. You could also move on to a Higher Education course in a variety of biological sciences or onto our own BSc Degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare or Foundation Degrees.

The Extended Diploma in Animal Management is a two year course (equivalent to 3 A levels), incorporating a wide range of compulsory and optional modules and an industrial work experience placement arranged to suit your interests.

Student Profiles Emlyn Thompson-Murray Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Animal Management School: The Oldershaw School, Wallasey Emlyn gained his Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care at Church Farm, our Wirral outreach centre. Inspired, he moved up to a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Reaseheath and now he’s progressing onto our Level 3 Diploma. Although he was born with a medical condition, Emlyn hasn’t let that hold him back. He’s worked with the animals in our collection, enjoyed trips to zoos and even finds theory fun. He says: “Everyone is so kind and supportive and I’ve made lots of friends. Reaseheath has got lovely surroundings too, it’s just nice to be here.”

Melanie Buckland Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management School: IGCSE Simba International School, Zambia Born in Zimbabwe and raised in Zambia, Mel left Africa to experience education in a different country. She’s had no problem settling in at Reaseheath because she joined so many like-minded students. Student Profiles Mike Ratcliffe School: Ruskin Sports College, Crewe Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying Mike reckons bricklaying is a good trade to be in because there’s always high demand for skilled workers. He learned his basic skills at Level 1 and by the end of his Level 2 course he could build cavity walls, sloping garden walls and internal decorative arches, all relevant skills he used during work experience with a builder. Now a Level 3 student, Mike says: “Coming to Reaseheath has been great because you learn so many skills. The tutors really understand the industry because they’ve all worked in it.”

The course includes identifying tree species and plants, control of local pollutants, fell and process small trees, cross-cut by chainsaw, prepare and maintain safe working site for arboriculture operations, plus more optional modules to choose such as specialist tree felling.

Student Profiles Steven Waterworth Level 3 Diploma in Conservation and Wildlife Management Despite a varied career path, Steve has never lost his enthusiasm for the countryside. After 16 years in the motor trade and previous jobs as a printer and furniture maker, he’s aiming for his dream career and has come to college to gain relevant experience and qualifications. He’s done crucial work placements with the National Trust and with Cheshire East Council and volunteered with conservation groups to increase his chance of employment. “I wanted to do this course 20 years ago and I’m so glad I got the chance again,” says Steve.

Jon Megson Level 3 Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture School: Hope Valley College, Derbyshire A trainee tree surgeon, Jon wants to climb to the top of his profession and he’s already planned his route. Equally at home in a tree canopy or in front of a microscope, he plans to gain experience in Britain before seeing what the major industries in Canada or New Zealand have to offer. Eventually he’d like to become a tree surveyor or to go into management or research. Equine We offer our students a range of world class horse care and management courses as we are committed to developing their skills and knowledge to levels which frequently exceed the increasing requirements of employers in the equine industry. Our recent ÂŁ2.3 million upgrade has provided students with an international sized indoor riding arena, modern American barn stabling, a round pen for natural horsemanship and an equine solarium. We also have two all-weather outdoor arenas, as well as a mechanical horse called Flicker that students can use to improve their skills. We cater for all levels of rider including top level schoolmasters and support our more advanced riders through specialised clinics with opportunities to participate in events. Our equine degree level courses have been developed to meet the growing demand for well qualified graduates who have a combination of academic and practical skills. Croft End is a highly professional and successful training centre and riding school near Oldham, adjoining the Daisy Nook Country Park, just ten minutes drive from the M60 Manchester ring road. Like Reaseheath, Croft End prides itself on turning out students with the skills and knowledge required by employers. Croft End is approved as a riding school by both the Association of British Riding Schools and by the British Horse Society and is a BHS Approved Training Centre for stages 1 and 2. It has indoor and outdoor arenas, stabling for over 60 horses, pasture turnout and a purpose built equine shower bay. Its training facilities include a very sophisticated horse simulator named Troy, along with classrooms, IT and audio-visual aids and a library. Student Profiles Robyn Longden Level 1 Certificate in Land Based Studies (Foundation) in Floristry School: The Kingsway School, Stockport Highly creative, Robyn likes art, design, colour and fashion so it’s no surprise that she’s loved her introductory floristry course and can’t wait to start Level 2. She’s learned how to create basic designs and showed off her skills at our Family Festival, where she made wrist corsages, hair clips and floral cupcakes. A recent £7 million investment in the food 1 year processing plant at Reaseheath means that we have one of the best equipped food processing teaching facilities in Europe. Our brand new butchery department has enabled us to offer well equipped, state of the art premises to deliver our new meat technology courses. The meat and poultry sector of the food industry is a significant employer in most of the UK. There are opportunities in the abattoir, processing, manufacturing, catering butchery and wholesale subsectors, as well as retail butchery.

Student Profiles Katie Gibson Level 2 Diploma in Bakery and Patisserie School: Stockport Grammar School Manchester Arty and creative, Katie has already made a name for herself baking and decorating cakes for weddings, parties and special occasions. Now she’s making plans to turn her hobby into a successful business and she’s sure that the bakery and patisserie skills she’s learned at college will help. Student Profiles Abbey-Lea Mason IMIAL Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles School: Ruskin High School, Crewe Abbey has studied motor vehicle maintenance and repair at Levels 2 and 3 with us. This could be a good move, as dealerships are actively seeking female mechanics due to the rising numbers of women drivers. She can locate and fix faults on a range of road cars and has the confidence to tackle technical domestic problems. You will receive instruction in a variety of outdoor sports, so you have a good foundation on which to build your new career in the great outdoors. You will learn largely through practical instruction in rock climbing, paddle sports, mountain walking, camping and sailing.

Level 3 Diploma Adventure Sports (Subsidiary Diploma option)

This is an action packed course in which you will gain the equivalent of two ‘A’ levels plus the opportunity to take additional qualifications including the NCFE Level 2 certificate in Outdoor Activity Leadership.

At least one day a week is dedicated to practical activities - increasing to two full days if you choose to take the additional leadership qualification.

A Level 2 Diploma in Sport at Merit grade or equivalent Level 2 Diploma A genuine interest and experience in adventurous activities!

Level 3 Extended Diploma Adventure Sports

The extended diploma is equivalent to three A levels and is designed to give you two action-packed years of training and experiences to help you pursue your chosen career in the fast growing adventure industry. During your study you will cover at least 18 units that are delivered by people who are very experienced within the industry.

Student Profiles Morganne Shone Level 3 Extended Diploma in Adventure Sports School: Brine Leas School, Nantwich A member of the GB Wakeboarding team, Morganne aims to remain at the top of her competitive sport and to use her skills in her long term career. Ranked third in the country in the Junior Women’s section, Morganne spent the summer representing GB in the European Championships in Poland and competing throughout Britain. Thanks to the flexibility and support from her lecturers, she is also studying for a respected qualification to prepare for her future. She says: “Sometimes it’s a juggling act but I’m loving being a Reaseheath student.”

Matt Frost Level 2 Diploma in Adventure Sports School: Sandbach Boys School Matt spends a lot of his time sailing, climbing and doing paddlesports, so becoming a Reaseheath adventure sports student has worked really well for him. He’d like to instruct in all three sports and is looking forward to progressing to Level 3 because he’s planning work experience with an outdoor adventure holiday centre. Student Profiles Harvey Jones Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services School: Hope Castell Alun High School, North Wales Harvey enjoys a challenge so he’s certainly chosen the right course for a career in the police or army! Keen on the operational side of the industry, he’s enjoyed visiting police and fire headquarters to see how professionals prepare for and control emergency situations. He’s also studied government policies, citizenship and current affairs. And because he may work in difficult terrain, he plans to gain additional awards in mountain leadership, climbing, paddle sports and ice climbing. He says: “This course is fantastic. Sports Studies Our exciting Sports Courses are the ideal combination of academic study and extensive practical sessions. Student Profiles Liam Kelleher Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence) School: Malbank School Nantwich A football and cricket enthusiast, Liam came to Reaseheath to kickstart a career in teaching. He’s off to Liverpool John Moores University to study for a degree in sports development and then wants to be a college sports maker, encouraging students into sport. Liam played for Nantwich Town FC for 11 years so he was a natural choice to captain our first men’s football team. He says: “There’s everything you want here. Moodle (the college virtual learning system) makes everything very accessible and the library’s really good.”

Emily Henshaw Level 2 Diploma in Sport (Performance) School: Congleton High School Emily is really on the ball when it comes to women’s football. She has represented Cheshire and was a member of Macclesfield Town Under 14s girls’ football team previous to that. She’s been accepted for Liverpool Football College and hopes to play in America, where women’s football has professional status. Attracted to our Level 2 Diploma by the variety of sports on offer, Emily says: “Coming to Reaseheath has been a good experience. Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are an excellent way to gain a nationally recognised qualification and practical hands-on work experience all whilst earning a wage! Training you in the skills employers want; apprenticeships give you choices in your career. When you’ve finished you can carry on working, maybe get promoted or go on to higher education in a college or university. Employers need qualified people with the skills to do the job - at craft and technician level.

It is therefore important that you live within reasonable travelling distance of the college. There are two types: Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship. Both lead to Work-based Diplomas or National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) - the certificates that qualify you as a skilled craftsperson or technician. If you are aged 16 and over and working 30 hours or more a week you can begin an Apprenticeship or Advanced Apprenticeship at Reaseheath (Adult Apprenticeship possible).

Access to Higher Education Created specially for over 19s who have not had the privilege of a university education, the Access to Higher Education Diploma is equivalent to two ‘A’ levels and will prepare you to study at degree level at Reaseheath or elsewhere. Qualifications and experience will be considered on an individual basis at interview. We are looking for people with ambition to go on to a higher level of course and a keen motivation to learn. Flexibility is the key to this one year course, which runs over three days a week between 10am - 3pm to fit in with work or family commitments. Designed to enable you to re-adjust to the learning environment, most teaching is carried out through ‘student friendly’ lessons, assignments and practical activities. The Inspectors commented:

Reaseheath College continues to raise its teaching standards - and it’s a great hit with students, a positive Ofsted inspection has proved.

“Reaseheath’s residential provision for students aged between 16 and 18 years is outstanding.”

Reaseheath was awarded Outstanding or Good in all the subject areas inspected under a new, more rigorous, Common Inspection Framework early in 2010. The inspectors found numerous outstanding features and concluded that students’ achievements and the quality of education and training was continuing to rise. The new inspection framework has definitely raised the bar and this was proof that Reaseheath has succeeded and will continue to bring in new ways of meeting and exceeding requirements. In June 2013 the college underwent another Ofsted inspection regarding the Care Standards Commission which is responsible for ensuring the safeguarding of young people and vulnerable adults. The inspection report revealed Reaseheath’s to be outstanding in all areas; overall effectiveness, outcomes for young people, quality of service, leadership and management, and safeguarding were all judged to be at the highest level.
