English & Maths Achieving a good level of understanding in English and Maths is essential for young people to compete in today’s labour market. A recent article published in The Guardian quotes 22% of employers would not employ people without GCSEs. Not only is it easier to find employment with GCSEs, but the starting salary of young people with GCSEs is over £2,000 more than those without, and the gap is widening.

Your subject tutors will also work through a whole range of activities where you will embed English and Maths skills. For example, you will be asked to prepare a written and verbal presentation and written work for your course will require good grammar, spelling and writing. For Maths you will have to complete lots of calculations and this will require the collection and use of data.

On leaving school you will be able to raise your GCSE English and Maths grades and further enhance these important skills at Reaseheath. If you have yet to achieve GCSE grades C or above in English and Maths you will study these subjects again and if you leave school with high grades in English and Maths these skills will be further developed to ensure you are well equipped to work effectively in the industry of your choice. On starting your course at Reaseheath you will be carefully screened to identify which level of English and Maths you will be required to study. Depending on your previous qualifications and progress over the course you will work towards completing either Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications. Typically you will study English and Maths up to 3 hours a week and will be taught by a specialised English and Maths tutor.

22

Visit www.reaseheath.ac.uk for more information

If you are aged 19 and over and have not yet achieved a GCSE grade C, you will have the option of taking further English and Maths qualifications suitable for your level free of charge. For students under 19, it is a government requirement that the College works to support the development of these skills. For more information visit www.reaseheath.ac.uk/gcse

Agriculture Working across our Award Winning 272 hectare farm, based in the glorious Cheshire countryside, our agriculture students are introduced to commercial farming practices from the very beginning of the course. With over one million people working in the industry, we produce highly employable farmers who will have developed a wide range of skills through hands on practical activities in a real working environment. The course will prepare you for working across the sector, so whether that’s with modern technology based equipment or working with our 260-head Reaseheath Holstein dairy herd, our students leave with high levels of experience and qualifications.

The College built its reputation on developing agricultural education, and we pride ourselves on our well established status as the leading college in the UK. To succeed in this industry students require commercial acumen alongside the technical and management skills. Our expert teaching team are committed to making your learning both enjoyable and relevant to the rapidly changing industry. Students combine working on our purpose built farm with regular visits to other farming enterprises, an annual study tour and all first year students have the opportunity to carry out stock duties as part of their programme. Our recent ÂŁ3million new build has ensured that our dairy and livestock facilities are state of the art, including a 32/32 fast exit milking parlour and a demonstration anaerobic digester. Alongside our commercial sheep flock and high welfare RSPCA standard pig unit, students get the opportunity to experience cereals, forages and grassland.

Our students have also joined forces with local agricultural machinery dealerships, including John Bownes, RVW Pugh, Morris Corfield, Agricultural Machinery (John Deere) and Malpas Tractors. This gave them the opportunity to operate ÂŁ1million worth of technical machinery during the first silaging operation of the season, helping to give them practical experience in precision farming.
