Reaseheath student association Representing all students, the Student Association (SA) acts as the ‘Student Voice’ from both an academic and social perspective, ensuring you get the best ‘Reaseheath Experience’. The work the SA does has ensured a busy social life on campus, a good reputation in the local community and over £300,000 raised for charities. This led to the SA being nominated out of the whole of Cheshire for the Queen’s Award for volunteering. The SA committee is open for all to join with most committee roles opening up at the beginning of the academic year. We really encourage first year students to get involved and share their ideas.

RAG fundraising Each academic year our students select a charity to raise funds for through a range of activities such as socials, community events and much more! Our students rival most fundraising done by similar land-based establishments and even some large universities.

DEVELOP RESEARCH SKILLS TO ENHANCE YOUR CAREER POTENTIAL We understand that undertaking practical research as part of your degree is important, and is a vital skill needed to work in the industry once you graduate. Here’s an overview of some of the latest research projects from our graduates, who received special recognition for their work at our Graduation Ceremony.

Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Undergraduate Research

Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement and Personal Progression

Hannah Morrow

Lilly Harris

(BSc (Hons) Applied Plant Science and Production Technology) First class Hannah completed unique and in-depth research for her final dissertation which looked at the difficulties of crossing cultivars within the rose growing industry. She took an intuitive leap and came up with a simple treatment that she theorised would increase pollination, hip set and seed germination. She then proved through practical experiments over one year that her treatment did increase the chance of successful rose breeding.

(BSc (Hons) Equine Science) First class Lilly completed her final year thesis on equestrian motivational sports psychology to first class standard. Setting out to identify behaviours which led to a successful relationship between coach and rider — an area which has received little attention in equestrian scientific literature — Lilly recruited 340 participants for data collection. Her in-depth research revealed that both sides viewed behaviours such as verbal praise and body language were most effective.

The result has been a groundbreaking new treatment for roses that she is looking to develop in partnership with a major horticultural producer.

Lilly has progressed onto an MSc in Equine Behaviour, Performance and Training at another institution and plans to expand her undergraduate research further.

Connor Smith

Katie Hookway

(BSc (Hons) Agricultural Business Management) First class Passionate about dairy cows and their welfare, Connor has worked on a dairy farm alongside his Foundation and Bachelor Science degrees to gain further knowledge, resulting in his promotion to herd manager. He chose antibiotic resistance to mastitis as the subject for his final dissertation project in the hopes that he could discover knowledge which would be useful and accessible to farmers. He presented his findings at the British Undergraduate Research Conference showcasing how valuable land-based research can be. Hoping to eventually publish his research, Connor is now studying for a Master’s degree in ruminant nutrition.

(Foundation Degree in Dairy Technology) Eden programme A former dairy technologist with Arla Foods Taw Valley Creamery, Devon, Katie took the award for her project on milk protein and its potential to increase cheese yield. Keen on studying genetics and nutrition, Katie chose to research literature on cattle genotypes which give milk with a high casein level, leading to increased cheese yield. She then suggested a revised payment structure for UK producers which would reward them for creating a more profitable product. Katie is now working as a dairy specialist, helping local farmers with herd health, yield, genetics and nutrition, accreditation and compliance.

The Dairy Industry Student Best Final Year Project Award (sponsored by The Society of Dairy Technology) Ben Morris

(Foundation Degree in Dairy Technology) Eden programme Ben is a team leader in the whey department at Glanbia Llangefni Creamery, Anglesey, a large Mozzarella manufacturing site that produces large volumes of whey. Before going for further processing the whey needs to be at a temperature of less than 8 degrees celsius and this was not being achieved consistently. Ben’s research revealed that the evaporator had been modified and incorporated a design fault with two centrifugal pumps sharing the same pipe work and at different flow rates. Gas bubbles caused damage which reduced efficiency and raised the potential of introducing foreign matter. The problem was fixed by introducing a balance tank with level transmitter controlling a variable speed drive. Improved performance of the cooler has brought all products leaving the creamery to within temperature specification, with potential savings of £490,000.

MY DEGREE

I live on a dairy farm and hope eventually to take on the tenancy myself. It’s a very exciting industry and quite fast changing, particularly in the area of technology. You need specific skills and knowledge to be a successful farm manager and I felt that this degree would deliver both. For my research project I investigated the effect of enrichment on the growth and milk intake of dairy calves. Although hanging balls and brushes in the pens is known to benefit growth rates, there has been little research on how regularly enrichment should be changed. My findings were showcased at the prestigious Total Dairy 2019 event — one of my greatest achievements yet! Zoe Lemarechal FdSc Agriculture 2019

MY DEGREE

I am interested in agriculture and business so this degree was perfect for me. I gained practical experience through planning our own events and chatting to guest speakers and I also learned the theory behind all aspects of business. After graduating I became a marketing and communications assistant with KUHN Farm Machinery. The company works closely with dealerships and farmers, and communication with our clients is key. I use a range of skills in my role which were broadened during my degree. I’d advise anyone unsure of which route to take to think of a business degree. Reaseheath’s lecturers have experience in the sector so they teach practical solutions which will benefit your career in the future. Hannah Britland BSc (Hons) Business and Events Management 2019

INDUSTRY FOCUSED, CAREER READY

INDUSTRY FOCUSED The UK provides a diverse range of natural habitats and wildlife species, many of which are at risk from the effects of climate change and the impact of environmental issues. Our courses prepare you for work in this vital industry, to give you the skills needed to protect our environment before it’s too late. Complete an industry focused work placement You will undertake a relevant industry placement as part of your work-based learning module. You can gain experience through our close links with local authorities, businesses and organisations such as the Forestry Commission, Groundworks Trust, Tatton Park and Lyme Park. The industry contacts you build during your placement could lead to employment or volunteering opportunities.

Reaseheath is involved in the delivery of a number of CaBA water quality improvement projects across Shropshire and Cheshire, and has proved to be extremely effective at liaising with land managers in those project areas. Our water environment is already under intense pressure and will meet yet further and increasing significant challenges from climate change, species extinction and population growth. This will result in increased fresh water scarcity, flooding, biodiversity and habitat loss in coming years. As all life relies on water, it is extremely important that the next generation of students is encouraged to become guardians of the water environment. Whether students enter sectors in land management, environment, engineering and technology, construction, health, food, or any other sector, they will need to find sustainable ways of preserving and enhancing our fresh water environment, creating alternative approaches, technologies and methods of adapting to these changes. With access to woodland, formal gardens, lakes, rivers and streams, agricultural land and an arboretum, you will undertake research projects and fieldwork onsite. Our estate is managed under the Environmental Stewardship land management scheme and you will learn how to enhance and manage habitats to attract wildlife species. The location of our campus provides you with easy access to areas of outstanding natural beauty including the Peak District, the Lake District, Wales and a range of coastal habitats.

MY DEGREE

I’m passionate about finding ways to manage the countryside so it benefits both wildlife and people. I’m researching the effect of neonicotinoids on bees and whether there are alternative, less harmful ways of managing crop pests. I’m collecting crop yield data from arable farmers and I’m hoping to show that natural methods are as effective as insecticides. Research and technology both have a big future in the environmental industry. Soil and water testing kits are developing and phone linked technology is useful in the field as you don’t have to carry a lot of heavy equipment. I think a degree proves to employers that you’re serious about your career. I’m looking forward to what the future may bring. I chose this particular degree because it was science based and also allowed me to follow my passion for horses. For my final dissertation I researched the use of essential oils as an alternative treatment for equine skin problems. I presented this research at the Alltech Equine Science conference and was also a finalist in the Equine Thesis of the Year - both amazing experiences. During my studies I completed a placement with the Animal Health Trust, where I gained industry experience and gained valuable contacts which have been useful post-graduation. MY DEGREE

I find the food industry fascinating, particularly in how it’s using new technology to meet the global demand for food production. I’m interested in learning about food sustainability and how to avoid food waste and I really enjoy our science sessions in the labs. We also discuss morals and ethics so there’s a lot of debating. Eventually I’d like to qualify as a food technology teacher so I can inspire the next generation in the same way as my lecturers have inspired me. MY DEGREE

I’ve had so many unique opportunities during my degree which I don’t think I’d have had anywhere else other than at Reaseheath. As part of my studies I’ve helped to design and build two award winning show gardens for the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park and I’ve gained practical and management experience in the college glasshouses and grounds. It’s the hands-on experience which stands out for me, such as working with a real client to a brief. You can’t learn that in a classroom. I’m hoping for a career in land management and conservation within a National Park. It would be a great way to use the landscape and conservation techniques I’ve learned. MY DEGREE

Access to Higher Education courses are carefully designed with your future in mind. We provide a well balanced approach to learning which allows you to develop the study skills and the confidence needed to progress to higher level study. Louise Glenn Access to Higher Education Advanced Practitioner

Access to HE opened new and exciting doors for me. I believed that I couldn’t achieve a degree because I’d been out of education for years but I couldn’t have been more wrong! I was a head falconer and am passionate about birds, but my Access course helped me explore the wider conservation industry. My degree gave me good research and survey skills, particularly through field study trips to Peru and Costa Rica, and I’m keen to take these further. For my Masters I’m working with BirdLife International and Desert Watch to conserve the endangered houbara bustard in the Canary Islands. I’m excited to see what the future will bring! ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All of our courses have their own entry requirements. For more information, full entry requirements can be found on the course page listings both in our prospectus and on our website ucreaseheath.ac.uk

UCAS tariff system

Part-time courses

Find out more about tariffs on the UCAS website ucas.com

For all part-time courses, A Levels or a Level 3 subject in a relevant discipline is required. However, in some circumstances, relevant work experience will be taken into consideration and applicants will be considered on an individual basis. We consider each application on its merits. We may be flexible in our normal offer if you can show a commitment to succeed and can demonstrate the relevant skills and experience, for example, through employment, voluntary work or private study.

We use the UCAS tariff system for our full-time entry requirements. The number of UCAS points you need to join a particular course is listed on our course pages, both in the prospectus and on our website. These points can be gained in a number of ways, which are detailed in the table opposite.

For example, if the course you are looking at carries a UCAS tariff of 96, you can apply for this course if you are expected to achieve (or have already achieved) a minimum of three A Levels at grades CCC, an Extended Diploma or an Advanced Technical Extended Diploma 1080 at MMM, Diploma or an Advanced Technical Extended Diploma 720 at DD.
