Welcome

Students are at the heart of all we do at Reaseheath College. The Faculty of Higher Education is a place where academic excellence and student satisfaction go hand in hand to provide a unique higher education experience for our students. Our portfolio of programmes are designed with employers and the industries that we serve, to ensure that our graduates lead the way in the job market. Nearly 90% of our graduates are in related careers witihin six months of leaving Reaseheath thanks to our world class specialist facilities and hands on training that supports academic learning. In recent years the college has seen over £50 million worth of investment in cutting edge teaching facilities and student resources, such as on-site accommodation with more planned over the coming years.

In May 2014, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), reviewed the quality of the higher education at Reaseheath and commended the quality of student learning opportunities, the enhancement of students learning opportunities. They found no areas for improvement but identified many areas of good practice. The ‘Reaseheath Experience’ is something many of our graduates tell us was the most enjoyable time of their lives. We want our students to succeed in their chosen careers and we recognise that high performers learn through experience as well as through formal learning. s u p m ca Our beautiful campus is set amongst 330 hectares of farm, zoo parklands and woodlands and even has its own lake, perfect for relaxing with friends on a sunny day.

The Faculty of Higher Education is the main base for degree students on campus. This dedicated building has open-access IT suites, classrooms, a dual screen lecture theatre, tutorial rooms, quiet study area and a social area with café.

National Centre for Horticulture, the Environment and Sustainable Technology Opened in October 2015, this state-of-the-art technical facility is used for food crop trials and specialist research activities. Reaseheath Food Centre The centre boasts one of the best food processing halls in europe. It is internationally renowned in the food and drink sector and is the only one of its kind to achieve Grade A BRC7 standard. It’s also the chosen training provider to the Eden International Dairy Academy and is the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink Centre of Excellence for Dairy. The Farm As a regional centre for agricultural education, our college farm has world class facilities. The working farm has a top of the range rapid exit milking parlour and anaerobic digester. It’s also home to Reaseheath Pedigree High Yielding Holsteins and Youngstock.

A medieval market town with a contemporary edge, Nantwich is an attractive town with numerous shops, cafÊs and restaurants. It is great for a night out with plenty of pubs and nightclubs hosting weekly student nights. There are some great places to visit nearby including Chester Zoo, Oulton Park race circuit, Go Ape at Delamere Forest and Alton Towers. Transport links for Nantwich are excellent with the nearby M6 motorway, Crewe railway station and a bus and train station in Nantwich. Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Liverpool Ferry Port and Manchester Airport are approximately an hour’s journey from the campus.

The nearby cities of Chester, Liverpool and Manchester all offer great days and fun nights out. Spend a day in Chester at the races, hire a rowing boat on the River Dee or walk the famous City Walls. Liverpool is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with more listed buildings, museums and galleries than any city outside of London. Also renowned for its football and music, Manchester offers something for every taste, from live music and sports, theatres and art to shopping. There’s loads to see and do in the great outdoors and our location provides excellent opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits. For real adventure and beautiful scenery, North Wales, the Peak District and Lake District are all within easy travelling distance with plenty of opportunities for walkers, mountain bikers, horse riders, watersports enthusiasts and rock climbers.

Starting life away from home is an exciting adventure where you will meet new friends, seize new opportunities and learn new things. Reaseheath offers a great social environment with lots of activities on offer for you to get involved in… Reaseheath Student Association Representing all students, the Student Association acts as the ‘Student Voice’ from both an academic and enrichment perspective, ensuring that you have a positive and enjoyable experience whilst at college.


RAG fundraising Each academic year our students select a charity to raise funds for through socials, raft races, helping at community events, and much, much more! Social events The Student Association organises a lively programme of social events throughout the year including live entertainment, cinema and theatre trips, ten-pin bowling, karting and more! Sports Whatever your sporting interests you’ll be able to choose from a wide range of team sports including football, rugby or netball as well as take part in activities such as jujitsu, Zumba, badminton and indoor climbing. We also have a state-of-the-art gym with top specification Technogym cardiovascular and resistance machines, an Olympic lifting platform and weights area. Clubs and Societies We have lots of clubs, societies and forums that you can join such as a Dive Club and Conservation Society, and you could always form your own!

Student Services Our Student Services team are always around to help and support students with such things as: • Accommodation and transport • Financial support • Medical and personal support • Social and sporting activities • Student Welfare Our Student Welfare team offer a confidential service to students who may be suffering with homesickness, difficulties with coursework, financial problems, health or family issues. Our counselling service provides on-going support with specific problems and our Chaplain can offer additional support and pastoral care to students of all faiths or of no faith.

Higher Education Support Our specialist Higher Education Support Team (HEST) based in the Faculty of Higher Education, offer advice for students with a range of disabilities including learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, ASD, health conditions and mental health needs. HEST has a team of experienced mentors and specialist tutors for one to ones and mentoring sessions. The team can also provide confidential advice and guidance in order to apply for the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). As an Approved Assessment Centre for Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) we can assess any student wishing to attend a higher education institution anywhere in the country. Students studying on courses validated by the University of Chester also have access to library facilities at the Chester campus.

Finance

Tuition fees Tuition fees are charged for each academic year of a course and are set by the college annually. Visit our website for the latest information on tuition fees: reaseheath.ac.uk/finance-for-he Available funding Whether you are studying full or part-time, student loans or grants are available to help you with living costs and tuition fees. Other financial support, including bursaries and scholarships, may be available to eligible students depending on individual circumstances and is non-repayable. Additional help is also available for students who are leaving care, are in financial hardship, have children or adult dependants, or have a disability. Funding includes the Childcare Grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance, Adult Dependants’ Grant and the Disabled Students’ Allowance. For more information visit: gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance Reaseheath have several means-tested bursary schemes available to help provide additional financial support to those who need it. The Deal at Reaseheath – available for students with a household income of £25,000 or under, The Deal is a £100 package allocated for course materials. The Reaseheath Bursary – available to students who maintain an average attendance of over 90%, The Reaseheath Bursary is paid in two instalments of £450 in January and May. ASPIRE – any Level 3 Reaseheath College students who progress onto a full-time Harper Adams University validated programme will receive a £1,000 bursary in their first academic year if they meet relevant criteria.

The Reaseheath Trust – this emergency hardship fund is available to eligible students on Harper Adams University validated programmes.

Study Tour Support Fund – designed to support students who may struggle to meet the costs of study tours, this bursary is subject to eligibility criteria. To find out more about each of these funds visit: reaseheath.ac.uk/thedeal Loans All eligible full and part-time students may apply for a tuition fee loan to cover their tuition fees. This loan is not means-tested; it can be taken out to cover the full cost of your fees from Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, SAAS (Scotland) or Student Finance Northern Ireland, and they will pay the fees directly to us on your behalf. You can also apply for a means-tested maintenance loan to help towards your living costs whilst you study with us. You can receive up to £8,200 in support each year. You only start paying your loan back once you have finished studying and are earning over £21,000 per year. Further information is available at: slc.co.uk If you are from the Irish Republic or the rest of the EU and studying in England, you will pay the same tuition fees as UK students. EU students can apply for a loan to cover the cost of tuition fees. Accommodation For some of you, coming to study with us will mean living away from home for the first time. Finding the right place to live is important and living in halls of residence helps with the transition from home to university. Our halls of residence are all based on campus and offer single en-suite bedrooms with a work station and WiFi, 24-hour security including a Safeguarding Officer and CCTV. There is a choice of either catering or self-catering facilities. The catered option includes breakfast, lunch and evening meals, which are served daily in our restaurant. For those who opt for selfcatering each hall has a self-catering kitchen area designated to a number of students. Other dining outlets include Feast

cafĂŠ and the HE cafĂŠ, with the College Shop selling various snacks and meal deals. Applications for accommodation are sent out in student joining packs in June to those holding a firm offer. Room allocations are confirmed mid-August. All full-time Higher Education students can apply for residential accommodation. This offer is made to all applicants who live more than a reasonable daily travelling distance from Reaseheath and who apply during the normal admissions cycle. For students who require specialist facilities, there are a limited number of residential places available. Rooms are allocated on assessment of disability but no provision is available in halls for students who need specialist medical or nursing care. Additional qualifications are specific to each subject area and are listed on the course pages on our website. Where possible we aim to provide these as part of your programme of study but a subsidised cost may be charged for some. Employers often require industry specific qualifications in addition to a degree, so these practical qualifications can enhance career prospects and employability. They offer industry relevant skills and training that employers are looking for and offer graduates a leading position in a competitive jobs market.

your degree take you? Imogen Johnson graduated 2014 Food Industry with Management As a New Product Development Technician for food manufacturer Street Eats, Imogen is on the frontline of innovating on-the-go snacks and treats.

Kyle Allington graduated 2015 Dairy Technology Kyle’s been chosen by Arla to study an MSc in Food Science and Technology, specialising in dairy at Copenhagen University, to prepare him for a management role in the company.

Rachel Bowles graduated 2015 Animal Management (behaviour and Welfare) After graduation Rachel seized the opportunity to explore Africa and conducted research on the wild leopard population. She's since secured a trainee keeper role at Africa Alive safari.

Philip Adams graduated 2013 Equine Science Returning to education after many years as an operations manager, Philip completed his degree whilst working on Reaseheath equine unit. Continuing in academia after graduating from Reaseheath, Philip’s now a lecturer in Veterinary Physiotherapy.


Robert Yardley FdSc in Agriculture Re-entering farming in his early 20s after experiencing several other industries, Robert joined Reaseheath to further his career prospects. So far Robert’s been put forward to represent the college at the Oxford Farming Conference (OFC), leading to him winning the OFC travel scholarship where he attended the Young DLG Conference at Agritechnica, Germany. Since returning from Germany, Robert’s taking every opportunity to learn more about agriculture in other EU countries and looks forward to seeing where his agriculture degree will take him next.

Access courses are nationally recognised qualifications to help people gain knowledge and confidence to study for a degree. They are designed for those who do not hold relevant or formal academic qualifications for a degree, but who do have work and/or life experience. If you are a mature student or looking to change your career, these diplomas might be the way to unlock your future potential. During your first year you will study modules in principles of adventure education, professional development for sports coaches, psychology for sport and exercise and practical sports coaching, whilst developing your practical adventure sports skills in canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, sailing and more. Modules covered in the second year include research skills for sport and physical activity, philosophy, positive communication and counselling skills, pedagogy for sports coaches and skills acquisition and development in adventure sports.

Overview

This course is ideal for those aspiring to a career in sports coaching. You will develop practical and professional skills whilst gaining an understanding of the theory behind sports coaching.

Agriculture As a regional centre for agricultural education, our agriculture courses impart a high level of scientific and industry management skills and knowledge within mixed and dairy production farming. A wide range of management skills and academic knowledge in farming, agricultural science and business practices are developed, ensuring graduates have the ability to utilise that knowledge in successful farm management, consultancy or allied businesses in the wider agricultural sector.

Course overview

The Agriculture programme has been designed to give you an in-depth, scientific understanding of the latest industry techniques whilst developing your farm management and business skills.

What will I study?

This course focuses on mixed farming with first year modules in agricultural biology, crop production systems, farm animal nutrition, business and human resource management, land-based machinery technology, animal welfare and livestock production systems. Modules covered in the second year include agriculture and the environment, global markets and marketing, enterprise diversification, agronomy, farm animal health, finance planning and grassland and forage management. The final year is optional to gain a BSc (Hons) Agricultural Business, Development and Leadership (see page 32).

By combining scientific knowledge with practical and business management skills this specialist course will give you all of the skills needed to run a successful dairy business.

This course focuses on the athletic performance of the horse and the rider, preparing students for employment in the fields of equestrian performance, coaching and team performance management.

What will I study?

Year 1 provides an introduction to rider fitness and training and psychology for equestrian sport, whilst covering modules in the anatomy and physiology, equine genetics and breeding, principles of equitation* and the equine sports horse industry and management. Year 2 modules centre on applied equine nutrition and health, exercise physiology and biomechanics, sports nutrition for performance, sporting discipline management, manual therapies (human and equine) and physiological measurement techniques for athletic performance management. Food Science

The Reaseheath Food Centre is an industry-leading academy with an international reputation in the food and drink sector. We have been recognised by the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink as the Centre of Excellence for Dairy and an industry approved provider for Bakery. Over £7.4 million has been invested in the centre as part of our commitment to the future of the food and dairy industry, providing one of the best equipped food processing teaching and practical facilities in Europe. Our industry standard (Grade A BRC7) facilities include a commercial dairy, butchery, commercial bakery and innovation rooms for new product development.

Horticulture

The horticulture sector employs around 300,000 people across a variety of disciplines including edible growing, commercial production horticulture, parks and garden management, landscape architecture, garden design and landscape construction. You will be learning in our new £8 million National Centre for Horticulture, the Environment and Sustainable Technology accessing facilities such as a micro propagation unit, bespoke Mac design studios, a fully equipped science laboratory and our unique fully automated hydroponic production glass house with LED lighting.
