Essay
Part 1 - My work INTRODUCTION “What is a place? What is space? How do we make space? How do we prepare our mind to make space? Without a concept, we can’t have a place. Without a place, we can’t have space. Without a space, we can’t have architecture... If we want to create space, in the first instance, it has to happen in our mind. When a conceptual vision takes form in our minds, a place (with its own spatial features) is born. Architecture 101 is an introduction to space and architecture through 101 exercises. A sixmonth journey divided into 3 courses “online” on iversity (part 1, part 2 and part 3), one final exhibition / graduation party. This course is about part 1: from nothingness to place (part 2 is from place to space, part 3 is from space to architecture).” -text extracted from the web https://iversity.org/en/my/courses/architecture-101-part-i
WHY I’M INTO THE COURSE When I saw the announcement of the course in University I decided to enroll immediately. I know that It will be a lot of work. But the teachers are really good. I’ve been into Design 1o1. I’ve been in the social media talking to each others. I worked really hard. I’ve been in Berlin in the final party exibition and I had the opportunity to know all the people. And it was incredible. The 12 migrating #blaueblumen were gathered into little plastic bags, transparent, and hung up onto this special wall in #abadir. if ever you pass by for a visit, this minicollection will be yours to see... :-) — con Violeta Atanasova, Silva Kuha, Anna Zullian, Kat Pse, Staša Simenović, Alexia Chandon-Piazza, Amalia Cioaba, Dragica Nikolovska, Ewa Tuteja, Nina Inken Schmidtmann, Alica Horvathova y Rebeca Porras Alonso. ©Anne-Sofie Gauvin

WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE 101? Architecture 101 is an introduction to space and architecture. A six-month journey consisting of 3 online courses open to all on iversity (part 1, part 2, part 3), one final exhibition / graduation party and a week-long summer camp “offline” in Sicily. Architecture 101 is also a community of people. People who like to learn and make things together. A big community of cool people that started to take shape with Design 101 and that will keep growing (we would imagine...) with Architecture 101.
CELLS People from the Design 101 community (some of the people who completed Design 101 last year) got together and formed “cells” (autonomous units in charge of one main social media or activity). We (the teachers), only take care of the didactic material. The cells do everything else (the most terrifying parts of our course). We have many cells dealing with all kinds of various activities. We have 8 cells:
1. The iversity cell: our “teachers’ assistants” will be present on the iversity platform to make sure everything goes fine and dandy. 2. The Lola cell: Lola is our secretary and she is always there to help you. Most of the time, she is very nice and likes to hear from you. Her email address is: design101.info@ gmail.com. 3. The Instagram cell: the knights that will follow / browse everything #architecture1o1 on instagram, like / comment / “repost”. 4. The Twitter cell: our team in charge of spreading the course’s content and references on Twitter, replies and retweets, etc.etc. 5. The Facebook cell: these very nice people will update (daily) our Facebook page. They will share our video and pdf, they will monitor comments and provide answers to them, they will generate picture albums with the 20 best works of the day, taken from Instagram... :o
BE PART INTO A CELL I’m into the #Architecture1o1 Instagram Cell. In Architecture 101, we have 3 types of evaluations and Instagram is one of us. Is the most important and the first one. Is an “informal” evaluation. The team do a selection of pics of the day. The purpose of this Design 1o1 Instagram Cell is to manage the Instagram accounts for Architecture 1o1. This will include selecting and posting 21 Instagram posts for each assignment. The Design 1o1 and Design1o1Top Instagram accounts will be used to post our Top 3 and Top 21 Picks respectively. We then need to notify the other cell members and the Archive team that this has been done. We are five persons in the team with a leader. It’s a very very nice way to learn. I’m really happy with this new way. The teachers has given us two key criteria. 1. Aesthetic 2. Conceptual We Use Iconosquare (or similar program) on the Internet to search for all the homework and select the best. Sometime is too much work per day if you are a worker also. Most of the time there are a lot beautiful pics!
With iconosquare you can see all the pics about this hagstag.
WEEK1 TAKING PICTURES What I’ve learned. Taking pictures are the instructions for our first week. Photography as our main communication tool for the first one. One concept for each day and all the Week about a subject. The instructions of the teachers incluyed a video and a pdf in the mail. Watch the video. Make the pictures and later, share o Instagram! This is the process for each day. Later, you can share on the other social media: google+ and facebook. By the way, this course is about creating a community. This is the power of the mooc, this is something you could not get in a traditional school. And with people around the world. Differents views to the same subject.
THE FIRST DAY The concept, #RelativeSizeOfThings. About having our eyes ever looked at the earth from outer space and have ever seen your skin through a microscope for example. The task: watch our video, read our pdf, and carefully follow the instructions for the first exercise. It’s always inspiring. Watch our video, read our pdf and take (and share on Instagram) a picture of your eye... :-) Suggestions about artists, inspiring films and readings... absolutely amazing! We start our journey with the absence of space and place. Something that could be defined as: “nothingness”. We will go through the process of shaping meaning. Articulate and complex meanings, defining relationships between mind and bodies, bodies and places. Little by little, we will encounter places and see the world taking shape.
The #Top3 of the first day. The Internet is filled with eyes :-) The Top3 are the 3 favorite posts selected by the Instagram Cell.
EVALUATIONS : FIRST PEER-TO-PEER ASSESSMENTS The second type of evaluation is the Peer-to-peer assessment (mix between “formal” and “informal”) The “peer-to-peer evaluation” is “informal” because the teachers have no control on how the students will evaluate each peers. They give us some guidelines to follow, but the grades the students will give or receive will not influence the “final” grade we will get for this class. How does it work? You upload one single file (or document) containing your 5 exercises from the week (in the correct order, from Monday to Friday) Then, on Monday... You will receive 5 files to evaluate. You will have to evaluate your peers’ works. Then... You will receive the scores your peers gave you. I really love this original type of evaluation. In my opinion it was great. I really enjoyed and it was important for learn viewing what the others do about it. When you need evaluate somebody you need to observe well and try to understand what is the positive and you can learn from each others so much.
WEEK2 LEARNING TO SKETCH What I’ve learned. Drawing as our main communication tool. Practicing with some new App for sketch. It was my first time drawing with Ipad. I started with some App for sketching. The teachers proposed to you some of them. Really good experience with: Paper 53, SketchBook X and Adobe Ideas. You need time for discover the best one for each drawing. It was my first time drawing with Ipad. I started with some App for sketching. The teachers proposed to you some of them. Really good experience with: Paper 53, SketchBook X and Adobe Ideas. You need time for discover the best one for each drawing. And also is great to share your experiences and see what the others have used and have recommended.
The concept was to put your rational part of the brain asleep. The reference: Betty Edwards’s book and website for Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Here, her five basic skills of drawing: The “in-between”... The “negative space”. The perception of edges The perception of spaces The perception of relationships The perception of lights and shadows The perception of the whole, or gestalt
The Top3 of the week 2. The favorites posts are selected by the Instagram Cell. Drawings for the first day of the week. The different use of the line of the people are awesome.
WEEK3 MAKING COLLAGES In the first 2 weeks, we got lost into nothingness (taking pictures and learning some basics of sketching). We learned a lot of things and will need to remember. Now we will start seeing the fine lines between “nothingness” and “place”. We will make ten exercises around these “transitory points” and states of mind. How to go from the idea of pure nothingness to that of “place”? We started working with “collage”. I love this week, and I really happy with my work with collage app. I enjoyed with Baazart for Ipad. The first day we make a (digital) collage representing yourself. The way you are. Work on abstract figures and surfaces and forms. We not make or include people or any other “recognizable” things. The collage must be an abstract one.
What will I learn? To use a new and simple technique to convey complex meaning with complex constraints. To translate our inner selves using a non-figurative language and “communicate it.
The Top3 of the week 3. The favorites posts are selected by the Instagram Cell. Collages for the first day of the week. I love the different techniques and styles.

Architecture 101 Part 1: From Nothingness To Place Week 4: Observing the weather
WEEK4 OBSERVING THE WEATHER What will I learn? To look up. To look at the sky (from your point of view and from others’ points of view). Different people, different skies. Different skies, different places. Different places, different skies. To render the sun. To choose some parameters of selection.Which part or element of the sun will you focus on? There are various apps you can use to complete this task. Which one works better for you? Eventually, also to learn the difference between its lightThe morning sun, the mid-day sun, the afternoon sun, the sunset... To render the rain. Rendering the rain to learn to work with patterns and recursive shapes.

Architecture 101 Part 1: From Nothingness To Place Week 5: Shaping Diagrams
WEEK5 SHAPING DIAGRAMS We start puting things into “place”. A specific place. Your place. Now is the time to start giving names to things. At the beginning, they said: if things have no name, they don’t exist. Upon this line, in order to have a place we need to have a name, an idea for it. This week, we discoverded the fascinating world of digital mind-mapping/ diagram-making applications to make diagrams. To learn how to describe in a proper andcorrect way is one of the fundamental steps of any project. The description (if you prefer, the analysis) is already a project. When you observe in order you are already designing.

Architecture 101 Part 1: From Nothingness To Place Week 6: Drawing Maps
WEEK6 DRAWING MAPS This week, it was been all about maps. Maps of our place. Transforming my place into a special map. This mapmaking activity is extremely important. To express our idea using a very basic and simple tool. If it sounds complex, think that prehistoric cultures could express their whole universe simple tool: a line. We do this to introduce us to the relationship between what I want to say, and the tool I have to say it.
Part 3 FINAL EXAM GRADED BY THE TEACHERS This is the third evaluation system and it is “formal”. This is the “final exam” in Architecture 101 (part 1). We need combining our 30 exercises into a booklet. This booklet also incluyed this essay :-) I posted it in Issuu Let’s start the Part 2!
