70’s

Swiftly following on from 2015, the 1970s retro trend is a staple style for the fashionistas of AW 15/16, featured on the runways of many prestige brands such as Pucci, Burberry, Chloé, Gucci and Balmain and many more. This trend features many key iconic peaces in an array of fun versatile materials that embody the disco era. Expect denim, suede, corduroy and fur styles such as the Oversized patchwork jacket, zip and button through skirts, pinafores, and many more. Oh, and expect fringing, lots of fringing. To the right are a

few pieces from the runway that encapsulate different aspects of the trend. 1. Anna Sui’s take on a winter Boho look. 2. Everyone is falling in love with flares, including Jonathan Saunders who has a particularly vibrant pair in scarlet. 3. Penny Lane from “almost fameous” is definitely a fashion icon this season. And there is no better way to achieve her look than the sherling jacket. Heres Chloes version. 4. Owen Wilson may have owned the tassle in the Tennenbaums, but this season we’re taking it back. Dress by Burberry Porsum.

The retro, deconstructed casual vibes of the internationally loved store, urban outfitters is a perfect location for our vintage tomboy to be found, routing through the vinyl section looking for her favourite pink floyd record.

In the media

What brought about the revival of 70’s style?

As artisanal culture has gradually been veering more and more towards “retro” mediums of dressing, home decor and even technologies, through the re-popularisation of the mediums of polaroid and vinyl, it was only a matter of time before the design houses and everyone else followed suit. Last season with the rise in popularity of bohemian fashion through festivals such as cochlea and Glastonbury, trying to emulate the look and feel of woodstock, this way of dressing spilled out of the festival fields and onto the highstreets, and thus continued into the Autumn/ Winter season.

Influences through film. Wes Anderson (pictured above) who in the last few years has risen to critical acclaim is known for his very unique style of direction and production. His films have a very individual, retro feel to them and due to this, his cinematic style has accumulated quite a following and heavily influences the style of may artisanal sub cultures today.

In the press

Although the continuation of this trend comes as no surprise to anyone, it hasn’t stopped it from making the pages of fashion magazines, blogs and Instagram posts alike. Magazines such as Instyle , Marie Claire, Vogue and many more have reported the trend to be a “stylish way to layer up for winter”

Dark Victoriana

Victorian frills and a mournful mood came together to create darkly decadent themes for AW15; Thom Browne centred his collection on the recent Met Museum exhibition ‘Death Becomes Her’ while Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen looked to the beauty and decay of a rose. Sheer fabrics, frilled details, luxurious embellishments and floor-skimming lengths are the essential components of this look. [Left to right: Givenchy, Thom Browne, Simone Rocha, Alexander McQueen]

Consumer Motivations and Attitudes

Musician, artist, tattooist, writer, patron of the arts and a well known lover of high fashion, Katherine von Drachenberg (better known as Kat Von D) is bound to be seen adorned in some of of the darker picks from this season.

The consumer for this trend will undoubtedly be a highly educated individual with a very discerning style and a passion for flare. A love and appreciation for the arts and a nostalgia for the luxurious victorian era of the past where corsets and lace were apart of everyday life.

Oh, Juliet. Consumer Motivations and Attitudes Feminine yet in charge. This girl knows what she wants and how to get it. She is driven and self motivated, in charge of her life style and always does whats best for her first, her image is discerning and sophisticated whist still being up to date with current fashion.

Here we see a very different side to this trend than the previous sub genre. “Oh, Juliet. , is a softer much more feminine apporach to victorian style, Fall in love with this season’s romantic side. Puffed sleeves, high necks, delicate lace and chiffon showcase a Victorian mood for the ultra-feminine lady in us all. Alexander Mc Queen has perfectly captured this style with this piece pictured above. And who better to represent this trend adorned in a beautiful high necked lace skater dress than the dutchess herself, Kate Midellton, pictured left.
