NEW YORK CITY Take a bite

If you haven’t visited New York before it can be a daunting task trying to decide where to stay, how to travel around the city and what the best places to visit are. So Compass journalist Rebecca Jones has listed a variety of things to do on a five-day trip that incorporates the highlights of the city throughout the day and night.

F

or a first time visitor you may only have seen the Big Apple through the hundreds of movies that are based in the city and personally I was concerned that New York wouldn’t live up to its’ outstanding expectations. However I was pleased to announce that it truly lived up to expectations, if not exceeding them. So, here are my top tips for visiting NYC. When planning a trip to New York it is useful to know that

the island is divided into five main sections, which from north to south include The Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island. The Bronx is home to the world famous Yankee Stadium, Queens is renowned for its casinos, Brooklyn has it’s iconic bridge as well as a pop cultured art scene, Staten Island is home to the Statue of Liberty, and Manhattan is where the heart of New York beats. Basing your hotel in midtown Manhattan is a good place to stay as the majority of famous attractions are within walking distance and the rest are a subway ride away, which you can hop on and off for the relatively low rate of $6 per day. On my visit I stayed in the center of Manhattan on Broadway next to the famous

If you are an early QUEENS bird, watch the sun rise up over the city or MANHATTEN watch the sun go down in the evening. You can also visit the top at night to get a lit up view of New York in its prime. Other specular views can be seen from the Chrysler building, Brooklyn Bridge and BROOKLYN the Statue of liberty, which are all, situated a few subway stops away from each other and are STATON ISLAND perfect for making a day out of Times Square. There’s not better way to burn off your lunch than by taking a walk in the stunning central park, which is truly gorgeous all seasons across the year. The park is surrounded by fascinating museums like the Natural History Museum and Modern Art Museum, which cost $12. Or take a subway downtown to wonder around the financial district to see Wall Street, Ground Zero and the Trump Building. So when the days turn into evenings, the city becomes even more alive and atmospheric. Rooftop bars were one of the highlights of my trip as you have spectacular views of the city at night. I’d recommend 230th Avenue and The Press Lounge (both free entry) to enjoy a few drinks in. There are also boat cruises around Brooklyn Bridge and Liberty Island. Or save up to see a concert at Madison Square Gardens, where you are guaranteed to hear someone amazing. With so much more to see and do, why not start planning a trip to the city that never sleeps?

nlike a typical tourist mobbed Spanish city, Cadiz keeps hidden away from the holiday brochures and stays as a traditional seaside town. So, ideally if you plan on visiting you want to be a reasonably confident speaker of Spanish, or at least feel

confident in asking for directions, food, transport and general questions, as the locals are not overly familiar with English. The stunning city of Cadiz is only 7 miles in circumference and within this small city are a combination of top quality restaurants that include

The city is also a great place for shopping as there is an organic mix of independent outlets as well as more mainstream retail shops such as Zara, Mango,

travel interview

Ever thought about travelling around the world and booking peoples dream holidays for a career? That is exactly what Tracey Tweedle did when she decided to set up her own holiday counselling

business.

Could you tell Compass a little about yourself and what you do as a travel Counsellor? Well, I previously worked for a

10 COMPASS Magazine

travel agency and 6 years ago I decided to be an independent travel counselor because of my passion for travelling and I wanted to give my best advice for customers looking for looking for their ideal annual holiday, city break, ski trip, cruise or once in a lifetime dream holiday. I always aim to match to my customers holiday needs and make sure I get the right holiday for them. I do all of the research for their holidays and I’m on call 24/7 if they have any worries before or during their trip.

As you have a big love of travel, where would you say are the best places you have been? Cancun in Mexico was an amazing trip that I went on with my husband a few years ago. The beaches were gorgeous and peaceful, and the people were very welcoming to have around us. I have also been to some fantastic places in America such as, Florida, California, San Francisco, Las Vegas, LA and my personal favourite, Santa Barbra which

as I enjoy visiting new places so much myself I thought there is no better job than making other peoples travel dreams become a reality.

had a real Spanish feel to it and had stunning sandy beaches for miles on end. As the summer edition of Compass is a city break edition, have you got any top tips for visiting a city? Weather plays a big part when choosing a city or place to visit. People don’t always consider the different times of year around the world. If you want to go over to Australia or South Africa in English summer time, remember that it is winter down there. Also if you plan on having a week in the Caribbean, hurricane season is in the mid summer months. So my advice is to research the weather so you can pack the right clothes and get the best out of your trip.

Have you visited New York, Paris, Cairo or Cadiz? I’ve been to Paris and thought it was amazing to see the Eiffel Tower up close, as the size is so extraordinary. I also enjoyed visiting the museums and soaking up the French culture. I also found that it was a very easy city to get around by foot or the metro. What makes you so passionate about travelling? It has a glamorous feel to it and as I enjoy visiting new places so much myself I thought there is no better job than making other peoples travel dreams become a reality. To book

fantastic once in a lifetime trips for my customers and get brilliant feedback makes my work as a travel counselor so rewarding. Where is the next place that you intend to visit? I am just taking a short break down to our apartment in London for the weekend, which will be a nice little break with my husband. Do you have any plans for the future of your business? Right now I am really happy

with the way things are and keep in regular touch with my customers. I enjoy hearing their feedback after a holiday and one of my favourite trips I arranged was for a customer’s 30th wedding anniversary trip to China to visit all different parts of the country. So my future plans are to keep up the positive feedback and keep arranging once in a lifetime trips for my customers. Who says New York is the only city that never sleeps? Compass has devised a night tour of the French capital.

1

The Eiffel Tower As cliché as it may sound, the Eiffel tower lit up at night is truly the highlight of the city. Whether you go up it at night to see the rest of Paris lit up or walk around the gardens and cafes below. It is what makes Paris so fabulous and a definitive must at night (£18).

2

The Moulin Rouge For a girly night out or a couple’s trip, seeing a show at the Moulin Rouge is a must if you love French culture, music and dance. It is based near the Sacre Coeur, have a look at the cathedral at night before seeing a show (£93pp).

3

Boat Cruise down the Seine If you have been on your feet all day a great way to get around the city and see it in it’s most spectacular form is by boat at night. There are a variety of boat stops to hop on around the city stopping at the majority of main attractions (£50-£200).

4

Shopping Fashion defines Paris and the eight-floor shopping mall named, Gallery Lafayette is open till 8pm. La Temps also has a rooftop area with stunning views of the Opera house below and six floors of high end fashion brands. (Free)

www.compass.co.uk

5

Bars Le Bonnie and Clyde is a simple spot that goes well with the areas late night vibe and it is open until 6am. An earlier closing, more traditional bar is La Famille which consists of 12 tables to listen to great live acoustics and food that is bursting with flavour (Free entry).

6

Opera A trip to the opera is memorable in any city, but particularly so in Paris, which offers not one but two opera houses : Opéra Garnier and Opéra Bastille. A perfect excuse to dress up and enjoy something a little special (£150+).

ward winning Irish fashion designer, Natalie B Coleman has had her designs worn by a selection of famous females, from supermodel Lily Cole to international RnB sensation Mary J Blidge. But Natalie does not let her celebrity status faze her as she always keeps her two feet on the ground. Natalie began her career in fashion when she moved from her countryside hometown of Monaghan, Ireland to study a fashion MA at Central St. Martins in London. After completing her studies she pursued internships in New York and Iceland before establishing 16 COMPASS Magazine

her own Womenswear label in 2011 called NOTJUSTALABEL, which she first showcased at a tradeshow in Berlin. Natalie’s road to fashion success took an extreme amount of work and she always went the extra mile to make her label succeed. She said, “ I moved back to Ireland after university and began creating my label with no landline, internet or much mobile reception so I had to get the bus six miles away to get reception in cafes in the nearest town. Sometimes I’d even ‘borrow’ my dads car to get to places.” Despite the technological setbacks, Natalie’s hard work was beginning to pay off and her raw talent combined with her built up experience set her into the fashion scene. Natalie’s deigns are all about strong narratives combined with eloquent, flirtatious, quirky looks and keen attention to detail, fabric quality and finishing cuts. “ Story is important to me and each design acts as a page in a dairy brought to life. Some parts are witty and humorous and others are darker and more mysterious”, Natalie says.

coleman Natalie has shown at Berlin, Copenhagen and Amsterdam Fashion Weeks as an invited guest and she has also shown during the infamous Milan, New York and Paris Fashion Weeks. Along side her worldwide runway shows Natalie’s label has been featured in magazines such as Harpers Bazaar, Dutch Vogue, Glamour, Company and Marie Claire. She has also been awarded Irish designer of the year 2012, national designer of the year by Image Magazine 2012 and Future Maker Award 2012. However, Natalie believes her highest achievement is staying in business. “ To come from the Irish countryside to merging my fashion label into the business world has to be my biggest achievement. I did everything head first and I’m constantly learning how business and fashion work together each day.” Says Natalie. Natalie’s label has attracted Irish stars such as Kathyrn Thomas, Sharon Corr, Charlene McKenna and Laura Whitmore as well as Marina and The Diamonds, all who wear the label.
Recently the American Rapper Rick Ross’s

Natalie has guest appeared and dressed models in a scene in the soon to be released film ‘Love, Rosie’ that will be released later on in 2014. For Natalie is isn’t about the celebrity label, she explains “ what matters most to me as a designer is for people to look at the clothes and notice you in a good way. It is important that the clothes are easy to wear and fit well to achieve the cool girl, effortless feel.” For aspiring designers Natalie left on some words of advice that she has leant along her career path. She says, “ don’t try and walk before you can run, it is important to get as much experience as possible and enjoy every experience to develop yourself.” For more details on Natalie B Coleman, visit her website www.nataliebcoleman.com or follow her on Instagram #nataliebcoleman, or Twitter @nataliebcoleman

Explore Ancient Egypt

From Cairo in the north to Luxor in the south, Egypt is full of some of our planets most amazing histoy that once made the country the center of the world. COMPASS lets you in on the secets of Luxor and why it is just as impressive as Cairo.

W

e are all well aware that the city of Cairo is home to the great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, but if you want to explore a different part of Egypt’s 4000-year-old ancestry eplore Luxor. Luxor has often been named the world’s greatest open-air museum, as indeed it is. The sheer number and preservation of the monuments in the Luxor area are unparalleled to anywhere else in the world. The ancient city can be divided into three main areas of interest, which consist of the city of Luxor, the town of Karnak and Thebes, which was the great capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom.

20 COMPASS Magazine

Luxor temple is situated in the center of the town and it is a spectacular piece of architecture that was built in 1400 BC. The temple is huge in scale, once housing a village within its walls with beautifully preserved statuary, carvings and pylons that are as large as 70feet long, making it one of Egypt’s most impressive visits in the country. Luxor temple is open between 9am – 6pm and admission is 20 Egyptian Pounds (£1.70). Another historical site in Luxor is the temple complex of Karnak which was built over a time period of 1500 years and was the most important place of worship in ancient

Egypt. The site spreads over a huge 1500 x 800 metres and consists of sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons and obelisks that are all dedicated to the gods. There are few places in Egypt where you are put so immediately and clearly in touch with extraordinary length of Egypt’s history as the Valley of the Kings and Queen Hatshepsut‘s palace carved in the sandstone cliffs of Luxor. A highlight of Luxor is booking an early boat ride across the river Nile to the Valley of the Kings where you then can have a hot air balloon ride at sunrise (approx. 5am) to see the tombs of the great Pharos of ancient Egypt. The views

are absolutely spectacular and the novelty of viewing the city from above really is a one in a once in a lifetime experience. The price of the air balloon tour costs around £50 English pounds per person. Exploring the Valley of the Kings by foot and the great Queen Hatshepsut’s extraordinary palace can be done in the same day after a Balloon ride. Seeing the Valley of the Kings by foot allows you access of the ancient Pharaohs tombs, including the infamous Tutankhamen’s almost perfectly preserved tomb discovered in the 1920’s, which made him so famous as it was the only tomb that was not looted by jewel thieves in previous centuries. You can see all of

summer 2014

Tutankhamen’s belongings, golden death mask and sarcophagus up in the north of Egypt in Cairo’s Museum, but seeing the hieroglyphics, craftsmanship and size of his tomb in Luxor is equally as magnificent. Probably the least known but most spectacular ancient building in Luxor is Queen Hatshepsut’s palace that is carved out of the desert sandstone situated near the Valley of the Kings. The palace is colossal in size and is a piece of architecture with its own iconic shape like no other, as it consists of dozens of pillars on tiered stair ways with a variety of stunning carved Egyptian gods carved in the cliffs surrounding the palace. Queen Hatshepsut was an interesting monarch with a controversial story behind her. She was known for being the longest reigning female pharaoh in Kemet, ruling for more than 20 years and she is considered as one of the most successful pharaohs. Her success was possibly down to the fact that she

gained the respect of men by dressing as a king, even wearing a false beard. She began having herself depicted in the traditional king’s shendyt kilt and crown, along with a fake beard and male body as a way of asserting her authority. Hatshepsut dropped her titles relating to those only a woman could hold, and took on those of the Pharaoh. She even, eventually, dropped the female ending from her name (‘t’) and became His Majesty, Hatshepsu. The city of Luxor may not be as well renowned as the northern city of Cairo, but it is a city that rivals Cairo’s ancient majesty, if not surpasses it. So if visiting Egypt is on your wish list, add Luxor to your travel itinerary.

How to make the perfect Greek styled chickpea salad for a hot summers day in the garden.

Ingredients 1 small red onion, peeled 1-2 fresh red chillies, deseeded 2 handfuls ripe red or yellow tomatoes 1 lemon extra virgin olive oil sea salt freshly ground black pepper 410 g tinned chickpeas, drained, or around 4 large handfuls of soaked and cooked chickpeas 1 handful fresh mint, chopped 1 handful fresh green or purple basil, finely ripped 100 g feta cheese

inely slice your red onion. Once that’s done, finely slice your chillies then roughly chop your tomatoes, mixing them in with the onion and chillies. Scrape all of this, and the juice, into a bowl and dress with the juice of half a lemon and 3 tablespoons of good extra virgin olive oil. Season to taste. Heat the chickpeas in a pan, then add 90 per cent of them to the bowl. Mush up the remaining chickpeas and add these as well – they will give a nice creamy consistency. Allow to marinate for a little while and serve at room temperature. Just as you’re ready to serve, give the salad a final dress with the fresh mint and basil. Taste one last time for seasoning – you may want to add the juice from your remaining lemon half at this point. Place on a nice serving dish and crumble over the feta cheese.
