his summer the National Black Arts Festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary by re ecting on the past while looking toward the future. It's a milestone, a family reunion with an emphasis on civil rights and human rights, said Stephanie Hughley, executive producer. In a time when so many arts organizations serving multicultural audiences have disappeared from the landscape, we can be proud of the fact that we're still here and stronger than ever. In addition to an exciting lineup that includes concerts by Gladys Knight and Wynton Marsalis, the NBAF is featuring a multitude of arts and cultural events, including the NBAF Artists' Market at its new home at the Georgia World Congress Center; the NBAF Children's Education Village; Pan African Film Festival; Friday Author Pearl night jazz at the High Cleage will Museum; World Music lead intimate discussions Festival at Centennial with artists in Olympic Park; and the the Creatively Ebb and Flow spoken Speaking word institute. series. The NBAF also is partnering with the Woodruff Arts Center and the Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta to focus on the legacy of the civil rights movement, Hughley said. Throughout the year, The Atlanta Dialogue: Artists and the Civil Rights Continuum will feature performances and community discussions exploring Atlanta's role in the movement. The High Museum of Art exhibit, Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968, will continue beyond the festival until Oct. 12. During the festival, Princeton professor Dr. Cornel West, trumpet virtuoso Marsalis and photographer Carrie Mae Weems will discuss artists and the civil rights continuum.

We're also going to be partnering with Macy's to do a hip-hop fashion show with Russell Simmons, Hughley said. I'm excited to be doing something centered around the fashion industry that's such a big part of the hip-hop generation. Looking back on the beginning of NBAF 20 years ago, Hughley said she is overwhelmed by how far the festival has come. I remember the rst festival was supposed to start with a parade down Peachtree. I was worried that nobody would come, but at the end, there was this sea of people, she said. And I remember everyone who came to the festival over the years: Cicely Tyson, Harry Belafonte, Maya Angelou, Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni. And, of course, Pearl Cleage, one of my best friends. Despite offering such an impressive array of artists, musicians and writers over the years, the NBAF struggled for a time. When Hughley took over in 1999, the biennial festival was several hundred thousand dollars in debt. She soon garnered more corporate support and made the event an annual one. This year, she added the Woodruff Arts Center and the Savannah College of Art as partners. Now different counties ¨ Cobb and Gwinnett and Clayton ¨ are talking about bringing part of the festival to their counties, and not doing it just during the 10-day celebration but throughout the year. We need to gure out how to partner more with the local arts communities. While Hughley is grateful to corporate sponsors, she credits Fulton County government for its key support. The festival was created with the help of Fulton County Commissioner Michael Lomax. There would be no black arts festival without Fulton County, she said. What I see the festival doing now is opening its arms to the entire world, not only in our community, but around the world. We're saying, `Come and celebrate the contributions we made to world culture and the in uences we've all had on one another.'

Children's Village exhibit explores faraway lands

Artist Dante Yarbrough, a Clark Atlanta University graduate, created “Salvation” for the National Black Arts Festival.

By Pamela A. Keene For National Black Arts Festival Imagine being able to visit Africa, the Caribbean and the rural South all in one day. Just stop by the National Black Arts Festival's Children's Education Village. There you will nd Destination Afrika and Beyond, a collection of three-dimensional exhibits ¨ actually child-sized houses built to represent seven geographic areas ¨ that will immerse youngsters and their parents in the diverse heritage celebrated at this year's festival. From storytellers and music to artifacts and life customs of each of seven locations, Destination Afrika brings to life background, heritage and experiences for all ages, said Collette Hopkins, director of education and family programs and curator of the event. Creating the Children's Education Village is the result of many trips to Africa to capture the essence of each country's diversity. Our `and beyond' addition includes the rural South and the Caribbean this year, Hopkins said. The seven destination exhibits ¨ Morocco, Ethiopia, Mali, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa,

Hopkins points out that the word education plays a signi cant role in the creation of the exhibits. These destinations create a sense of place to provide children with an educational experience that goes beyond sight and sound, she said. The village also includes a Disney animation workshop and a

literacy center, which gives children additional ways ¨ through books and lms ¨ to connect with the exhibits, Hopkins said. Each child can select a book to take home and read, she said. We want them to really connect with what they've experienced and to choose a book that means something special to them. For example, I Lost My Tooth in Africa, written by Penda Diakite and Baba Wague Diakite, represents West African destination and My Brother Martin by Christine King Farris represents the rural South. In addition, youngsters can read `Honey I Love' and `Africa Dream' by Eloise Green eld. Green eld and King Farris will be there to autograph and talk about their books. At the Disney Animation Workshop, staffed by professional Disney imagineers, youngsters will get a behind-thescenes look at how animation is created and learn to draw animated Disney characters. ➤ The Children’s Education

school, he won a Glee Club scholarship to Morehouse College, where he majored in nance.

Q: How does it feel to be coming back home? A: It is a blessing and I am excited to see my family and friends, including my 98year-old grandmother. It has been two years since I've been home. I miss the Southern hospitality, going to Hillside Chapel and Truth Center, hanging out in Buckhead. Q: What's it like to play the role of Harpo? A: It's terri c. It is an amazing show. You have to give it your all ¨ 110 percent. Playing Harpo is phenomenal because he is considered the Renaissance man, the new man. He breaks the cycle of [men] controlling, abusing women. He creates a new way of dealing with women.

Q: How did you transition from corporate America to the arts? A: I took my vacation from the bank to rehearse for Cotton Patch Gospel. When I came back, I was told that we were being bought by another bank. That's when I knew what I was supposed to do. I knew it was my time to fully commit to being an artist, singer and actor. Q: Growing up, did you ever think you would be performing on Broadway? A: I grew up in a time when your parents said go to school, get a job and life would be ne. I never thought about Broadway. I told my parents that the bank gave me a severance package. They never said don't do it. They said, Go for it. We believe in you. Trust your talents that God has given you. I never imagined all of this. ¨ Rori Francis Blakeney

community, has been the chief architect behind the innovative project. It was almost self-ordained, she said. In order for the theater to survive, we must nurture new playwrights. We must produce the future August Wilson or Lorraine Hansberry. The theater falls and rises with the quality of work that is produced. The free readings will be July 26 at the Alliance Theatre at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. The festival has partnered with The Humane Festival and the Walker Arts Center to commission The Breaks, a play written by San Francisco-based artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, a graduate of Morehouse College. The piece, a multimedia journey through verse, contemporary dance and video, explores transnationalism and globalization in relationship to hip-hop culture. Although

When Leatrice Ellzy, manager of artistic programming and festival production for the National Black Arts Festival, asks, Where are the emerging black playwrights? it's not a rhetorical question. Instead, it is the driving force behind a new project that will be unveiled during the festival's 20th anniversary celebration this year. Discovery: A New Play Development Project solicits new works from promising playwrights. Plays selected for the project will receive public readings, with some being funneled into development. We are really excited to participate in the process of theater, creation and putting new works in the world, Ellzy said. [The festival] was the place presenters came to in the past; we really want to get back to being that place, she said. For its debut, Discovery selected two pieces written by Shontina Vernon Clark, a graduate of Clark Atlanta University and the University of Washington at Seattle. The plays, described as despairing, heartbreaking and funny, deal with women nding their sexual selves, but from different perspectives. Psychology of Chromosome X is a series of vignettes about African-American women's self-discovery, while A Lovely Malfunction is about a married professor who suddenly asks questions about self, such as Am I happy? Am I ful lled? and Am I repressed? Shontina is extremely gifted: She sings, performs and is multilingual, said Andrea Frye, a theater consultant for the NBAF. We want to read controversial new works and support playwrights who have promise. And Shontina meets the criteria. In many ways, Frye, a mainstay in the Atlanta arts

Stu James' journey from southwest Atlanta to the big stage as Harpo in the touring production of The Color Purple has had some twists and turns, including a stint in corporate America as a banker. But he never stopped following his dream of becoming a performing artist. He's appeared in productions locally, including the Alliance Theatre's Cotton Patch Gospel as well as on Broadway ( Rent and Ain't Misbehavin' ). His small-screen work includes appearances on General Hospital and All My Children. He's also working on his debut album, Love Is, and a one-man-show called Son of the South. James' talent seems endless, and his former classmates at Benjamin E. Mays High School might agree: They voted him most talented. After high

Joseph will be part of the creative talent at this year's festival, his commissioned play will be performed at the 2009 festival. Joseph and a team of creative artists will conduct an all-day writing, movement and performance workshop, Ebb and Flow: Spoken Word Institute, for 13- to 18-year-olds on July 26 at the Auburn Avenue Research Library. While the festival is launching these new programs, it continues its long-standing partnership with local theaters to provide support for productions including: The Amen Corner, July 13-Aug. 3, Alliance Theatre The Color Purple, July 15-Aug. 3, Fox Theatre Hallelujah Street Blues, July 11 Aug. 24, Horizon Theatre Gees Bend, July 16-27, Balzer Theater at Herren's I Have A Dream Collision Project, July 18-19, Alliance Theatre

`Requiem': The moment past meets present By Don O'Briant For National Black Arts Festival

in re-enacting pivotal historical moments through the use of props, costumes and set designs. Recreated vignettes include the assassination of and mourning for Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Benazir Bhutto; an uprising; a procession of Buddhist monks; Morehouse College steppers; a classroom of young children sporting black berets; abstract clips of Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's campaigns for the U.S. Democratic presidential nomination; and surreal dreamscapes of a woman standing alone in the snow, along with a series of images that vacillate from terrifying to tender, Ferrell said. Weems has described her exhibition as a way of using the act of performance to experience and connect the past to the present. By inhabiting the moment, we live the experience; we stand in the shoes of others and come to know rst-hand what is often only imagined, lost, forgotten. Weems, who lives and works in New York City, earned a bachelor's degree from the California Institute of the Arts and a master's degree in ne arts from the University of California, San Diego. Her work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Hous-

ton, the Museum of Modern Art and the Williams College Museum of Art. The exhibition will be on display July 1 to Aug. 31 at the ACA Gallery of SCAD, 1280 Peachtree St. An artist's reception will be July 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. Other exhibits of note include Embrace: the Fine Arts Fair of the National Arts Festival, a gathering of the nation's top art galleries displaying and selling works by artists such as Robert S. Duncanson, Hale Woodruff, Benny Andrews,

Romare Bearden and Weems. The exhibition will be at Mason Murer Fine Art, 199 Armour Drive, from July 17-20. Another interesting exhibit is `Too Black, Too Fast,' a collection of paintings about the history of black jockeys, Ellzy said. The artist Michael McBride and the sculptor George Nock talk about how black jockeys were the nation's rst professional athletes and how some slaves were able to buy their freedom by racing horses. The exhibit is at Studio

The diverse visual arts exhibits at the National Black Arts Festival will be a feast for the eyes, but the exhibition not to be missed is Carrie Mae Weems' multimedia creation, Constructing History: A Requiem to Mark the Moment. A joint project of the NBAF and the Savannah College of Art and Design, the exhibit combines video, photography, music and poetry to re ect on the events affecting human rights since Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968. The NBAF introduced Weems to SCAD in 2007 in hopes of forming a partnership to exhibit her new work, said Leatrice Ellzy, NBAF programming director. We thought Carrie was the perfect artist for SCAD, Ellzy said. So did SCAD, who hired Weems to teach a course at the Atlanta campus based on Constructing History. The course allowed students in fashion, set design, photography, painting and other disciplines to work with her in creating this project, said Laurie Ann Ferrell, executive director of exhibitions for SCAD and co-curator of Constructing History. Ferrell explained that Weems drew on archival lms and media and directed students and other volunteers

Legendary performers bring the rhythm LATE-NIGHT EVENTS

The National Black Arts Festival will mark its 20th anniversary with tributes to two of entertainment's most accomplished artists. Grammy Award-winning singer Gladys Knight is this year's Legends Celebration performer. Judith Jamison, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, will be feted during an evening of dance performances. Both events are representative of the music and dance treats awaiting festivalgoers during the next two weeks. We're bringing together a diverse group of entertainers in a variety of settings ¨ from performances to personal conversations ¨ to involve the entire community, said Leatrice Ellzy, manager of artistic programming and festival production. Legends Celebration: An Evening With Gladys Knight will be Jamison July 18 at the Atlanta Civic Center. The R&B veteran will present a concert of her music, which spans ve decades and includes such hits as Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye) and Best Thing that Ever Happened to Me. She's a trailblazer and the perfect legend to honor this year in our 20th anniversary, Ellzy said. Coincidentally, this year is the 30th anniversary of `Midnight Train to Georgia.' [Knight] is an Atlanta girl and very deserving of

ily Pavilion, with events that blend the best of the Caribbean, South America, Cuba and Mexico, complete with costumes, masquerades, sweet fruit treats from the tropics and dance lessons. This is a wonderful chance to learn, taste and dance history in this lively showcase for all members of the family, said Collette Hopkins, director of education and family programs for the festival. We'll have icy drinks made from mangos, guava and many of the tropical fruits, and people will have a chance to make masks and participate in dance lessons. On July 27 the theme Life as Tapestry emphasizes the relationship between jazz and gospel music. Highlights of the day will include composer Dwight Andrews and the Atlanta Jazz Chorus, six gospel choirs and other musicians. Performances run from 1 to 5 p.m. As the world gets smaller, we are pleased to bring a big taste of the world to this summer's festival, Ellzy said. We view ourselves as bridges to cultural understanding through the arts because it is the art that tells the story about our individual cultures and where those cultures intersect. Those world cultures are represented in the concert lineup on during the music festival. The artists on the main stage July 26 will include Mausiki Scales (Atlanta); Julie Dexter (Atlanta/UK); Vinx (Atlanta); Toots and the Maytals (Jamaica); Habib Koite (Mali); and Hugh Masekela (South Africa). The lineup on July 27 includes Orquesta Macuba (Atlanta); Kinky (Mexico); Spanish Harlem Orchestra (New York City); Los Hombres Calientes (New Orleans); and Roy Ayers (New York City). In addition, artists from around the world will showcase their goods in the International Vendor Marketplace. Merchandise will include fabrics, clothing, sculptures and jewelry. ➤ For more music and dance events, go to www.nbaf.org.
