Emme Entwistle Aronson
from Coach Bill Sanford:
“One of my tallest recruits ever. He put it to good use and I was amazed how good he got at moving a boat, especially during 1990. He was dependable, would never, ever, give up and would give it all until the last stroke. He was a truly amazing athlete who showed National Team qualities while rowing at SU. He loved a good party, whether it be the Navy Ball or Post IRA. That was expected however, after his exposure to ‘West Side Rowing Club’ in his hometown, Buffalo.”

from Coach Bill Sanford:
“Allan was a quiet guy that you could always depend upon. He was a very skillful technique guy who could row both sides due to his sculling experience. He shunned the limelight and was an ultimate team guy.”

As the oldest sport on the SU campus, rowing has a rich and storied 140-year history. The legacy of Syracuse Rowing has been created by over 6,000 men and women athletes who pulled an oar or steered a shell over the waters of Onondaga Lade while their coaches provided a steady guidance. As alumni, we remain proud to be part of a program that is continuously recognized as a leader in the field. Syracuse Rowing has produced Olympians, coaches, business and community leaders, politicians, and parents. Undoubtedly, the time spent training and competing for Syracuse has influenced every one of us. Grit, determination, teamwork, a strong work ethic, integrity, leadership, and humility are only some of the traits that distinguish every Syracuse rower. Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (S.A.R.A.), founded in 1954 by Dr. Bruce Chamberlain ‘41 and Dr. Thomas Kerr ‘39, has been a driving force in the evolution of rowing across the decades. Preserving the history of Syracuse Rowing is one of the most important roles of S.A.R.A. The original Mark of the Oarsmen, authored by Malcolm Alma and first published in 1963, documents our first 85 years. The sequel to this book entitled Mark II, written by John Nicholson ‘68, and Joe Paduda ‘80 was published this year. Syracuse Rowing alumni cherish our history and we are proud to have been a part of a founding institution in collegiate rowing.
