PROJECTS

POWERED BY THE MYCO-GRID Location: E. 3rd St/Bowery, Manhattan, NY Program: urban mushroom farm, outdoor theater, interactive education & research facilities Collaboration with Thorfun (Fine) Chutchawanjumrut An urban mushroom farm becomes a sublime experience and signiďŹ cant resource by converting organic waste into food and electricity. The project serves as a keyhole for a greater system that would provide an alternative energy source in times of emergency and could be proliferated throughout the block or at similar city sites. It addresses sustainable food production practices and daily rituals of charging mobile devices in an information-technology dependent society while actively engaging the community in the growth process.

RENDERING | Rhinoceros4.0, V-Ray, Photoshop

PROCESS SKETCHES

4 ~6 WEEKS

5 RITUAL

5

Mushroom Growth + substrate inserted into wall system where mycelium spreads and mushrooms grow

Mushroom Harvest + edible mushrooms are picked by two means: active- net climbing or passiveblade cutting and mushroom rain

1

Enzyme Immobilization, Transport, and Storage + lacasse extracted from Turkey Tail mushroomstravels through tubes and is stored in solution pools within the floor system

2

3

Waste Disposal + Organic waste ranges from cardboard or paper waste, food waste, coffee grounds, etc. + Collection at street level +Plug-in stations for bicycles to mechanically operate grinder

Substrate Production/ Composting + ground up organic waste is mixed, moistened, and sterilized in ‘clean room’ area

Inoculation/Spawning + imported mycelium is mixed throughout compost and decompostition begins

1 WEEKLY RITUAL

6

Electricity Generation + enzyme becomes biocatalyst in biofuel cell where electrochemical reactions generate electrical current

2 7 2-4 WEEKS

4

Application/Usage + electricity is supplied to power charging stations for mobile devices and the projection screen of the outdoor theater

(FABRIC)ATED HUMIDITY Professor Brett Snyder A modulated wall system, made of polyester/cotton fabric, makes visible the natural phenomenon of humidity with a gradient eect as the air’s moisture content changes both naturally and as a result of human interactions and occupation of space.

CREATING THE CORNER Location: Waverly Ave, Syracuse, NY Program: Fire Station Professor Bruce Abbey A proposal for a ďŹ re station adjacent to Syracuse University not only uses a traditional spatial logic of quadrants to address ďŹ re house culture, functions, and interactions between machines and people, but also provides a passageway for pedestrians to connect campus with the shops, restaurants, and other amenities on Marshall Street.

AQUARIUM [for Birds] Location: Atlantic City, NJ Program: aquarium, restaurant, retail, offices Collaboration with SaDe Lewis Professor Roger Hubeli An aquarium located off the shore of the iconic Atlantic City Boardwalk addresses not only aquarium operations and human intentions for entertaining attractions, but also the ecological needs of migratory seabirds that have become endangered due to the impacts of high-rise towers and artificial light.

ENGAGE THE EDGE Location: Seneca Army Depot (10,000 acres) Program: art galleries and art park as extention of MoMA, recreational park and related services, artists’ studios and housing Professor Brett Snyder A devastated site, previously used for munitions storage and production, is adaptively reused and revitalized to address a regional shift from industry to promotion of education and leisure activities; driven by a fundemental concept of inverted density, greater intensities of occupation and activity occur within an edge condition to accomodate multiple agendas and users.
