Dress dolly

Brief The cover design needs to reflect that this is a fresh, witty and illuminating book which looks at the big – and the not so big – questions of life in an original and entertaining way.

It needs to hint at the very broad range of topics the book covers. It needs to convey that the Freakonomics way of seeing the world is at the heart of everything we see and do – these are the subjects that bedevil us daily: from parenting to crime, sport to politics, fat to cheating, fear to traffic jams. This book asks provocative and profound p questions about human motivation and contemporary living and reaches some astonishing conclusions. The cover is the ‘way in’ to how people will change the way they see the world

To try and communicate the broad range of topics and people the book covers but in a ‘witty’ way, i am going to explore the idea of creating a ‘dress dolly’ type of book cover. distinguishing the cover as a interactive paper based illustration, ti hope this will adhere to the briefs specification of a entraining, original idea.

What do estate agents and the Ku Klux Klan have in common? Why do drug dealers live with their mothers? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? to communicate com how such opposite people have things in common, i am using the stereotypical appearances of such people and combing them togeth-

Clothing and appearances to represent Sumo wrestlers.

To add to the cover disguise of a interactive paper illustration that would feature in a magazine or child's magazine, i want to illustrate the objects/clothes in a very clean, crisp way, as i would image them to look in the magazine. digitally created. therefore i have hand drawn clean line drawings of the clothing/objects which i can then digitally paint/render on Photoshop to make them look digitally created. above i have also played around with adding material patterns to emphasize the concept of sumo wrestlers mate futher with a Japanese pattern. another reason i wanted to make the illustrations straight forward is because i didn't want to add anymore confusion and fuss to the front cover as the concept is already complex.

Stereotypical appearances and accessories of a drug dealer to highlight the concept of a ‘dress dolly’ game i have experimented with using dashed lines around the clothes as a instruction of where you would cut.

Judge outfit stereotpye

Ku Klux Klan stereotype clothing.

Accessory to represent Accessory to represent Crime Accessory to represent ‘fat’ parenting as there isn't a specific outfit for a parent, criminal or ‘fat person’ i have thought of objects i could use to represent thee stereotype. also, because i only have a small space to fill on the cover, drawing more full outfits will take up more space.

adding clothes to book cover template given: as i would need to draw/show a range of clothing par ts to illustrate the different types of people/subjects mentioned in the book , i may struggle to fit all the ma different clothes and accssesories on without over crowding and over complicating the cover. Â however, i plan to use the back cover aswell, but will choose the most contrastcont ing outfits (people) on the front page to catch the attention of the viewe

Adding the person/doll for the clothes to go on. the problem with this is that i don't want to generalise issues in the book to one gender. below i have played around with creating a model that does not represent a specific speci gender. though i havent given the model male or female features, i still think the model looks more male than female. Another problem pro with the person is choosing what colour to fill it, again, i don't want to generalise issues by race, but I'm not sure leaving it blank is as effective as having it coloured.

Trying to avoid a white background. i wanted to choose a colour to brighten up the cover so viewers would be drawn to it. however it was hard to find a cover that looked good next to the many colours in the different illustrations better than the plain background.

Because of the many small illustrations i have added to cover i found it very difficult to place the mandatory text. i have played around with adding it diagonally next to the images to match the angle of the illustrations, however i think this may look to random and thrown together compared to the formal presentation of the information on the back page.
