showing the variety of topics through objects i.e. pregnancy test: parenting, tooth brush: brushing our teeth is something we all do, pencil: teacher.
developing on the idea of range of topic, showing the topics in a variety pack context like a variety pack of cereal.
watercolour and line drawing
Life is a box of chocolates
experimenting with collage
this idea is based on the metaphor above, communicating the many things that you come across in life, however instead of drawing chocolates i could draw objects to represent these issues in the chocolate box, choosing issues that are specifically mentioned in the book- drug dealers, parenting, sex, money, parenting estate agents, etc.
Expanding on the theme i touched on slightly in one of my sketch ideas (objects to decribe topics, toothbrush: something we all use so have this in common) i tried to think of other everyday things peope do, no matter how idffernent. this iconic image inspired to create a idea of the seve ral types of people/topics mentioned in the book and how we interlink with each throughtout the pathways of our life. by using the layout of the well know beatles cover, i hope this will draw attention to the cover and also be enter taining and humourous.
different people mentioned in the book all crossing the road. ire parent: pregnant woman. hooded man: drug dealer stereotype.
i wanted to use line drawing to capture the detail in the Beatles cover as much as possible to make it recognizable. however i have not added tone shading as i want to add this specifically to the figures to make them the focal pint.
i have added a background colour to the illustration so when i add colour and detail to the figures they will stand out more (like the white on the Ku Klux Klan, this would not be as prominent if the background was still white. i experimented with picking par ts of the background and adding the white to them but keeping e verything else the same colour. i think this looks quite effective. however., one thing i am not happy with is that the figures do stand out as much as i had hoped with the line work., so below i have added different depths of lines to show shadow and highlighted areas of the figure, something i have not done for the scenery drawing.
to create a strong contrast between the simple line drawn background and the figure detail, i have chosen a loose watercolour to add bursts of colour. i have only added this cetain par ts of the clothings to imply the colours of the clothes but not to give everything away, therfore the viewer can fill the rest in themselves.
i have digitally coloured the crossing as well as small par ts of the scenery line drawing (car windows) as this is the most recognizable feather of the Beatles cover, and shows the concept of all walking life path ways so therefore also needs to stand out.
though i have tried to make the figures stand out by using different media to detail them, because they still blend in with the background colour i wasn't 100% sure weather they were striking enough , so i have experimented with adding shadows and tone to the figures with colour pencil. however i think the colour pencil is to grainy and when edited on Photoshop looks to saturated.
