nuue skin One of the most crucial differences between modern fashion and one of the biggest differences between fashion and architecture is the idea architecture is the idea of what is temporary and what is permanent. In fashion, the idea of temporary allows designers to constantly address and adapt to the aesthetic style that evolves throughout time, through the exploration of design techniques and materials. The human race is ever-changing and the aesthetics of the past are not what they are today. With architecture's idea of permanence, we encounter a society in flux that has outgrown much of its past architecture, even though it remains in our environs today. Through the tool of technology and what it has become, it is destined to be the driving force of what dictates contemporary aesthetics. Instead of completely tearing down and rebuilding these aesthetically outdated infrastructures, why not give these buildings rebirth? This can be achieved by creating 'urban spectacles that 'signature' buildings aim to deliver,' while being able to adapt to the ever changing aesthetics of each generation.

CONCEPT

EVOLUTION Taking into account the evolution of the LBD, " the little black dress", an essential garment to the fashion world as well as any woman's wardrobe, the progress of the project was guided by first the form, then the material, and lastly the technique.

The LBD was first popularized by Coco Chanel in the October 1, 1926 issue of American VOGUE. Coco Chanel's idea and intention with the little black dress was to create a versatile and affordable design for all social classes, deeming it "Chanel's Ford," in reference to Henry Ford's Model T automobile. The dress was made out of chiffon and was short and simple, only decorated by a few diagonal lines, focusing more on the idea of the form. Throughout the next couple of years, the idea of the LBD stayed the same but was reinterpreted according to the time, experimenting with form, but mostly different types of materials. Now there is a shift into experimentation with technology in designing the LBD of our time, as seen in Iris Van Herpen's version, above.

METAMORPHOSIS OF SILKWORM

NUUE SKIN aims to revitalize buildings that are aesthetically outdated with the use of a temporary skin that reflects the technology and design of our generation. The skin acts as a cocoon, wrapping the building in order to create new life.

fiber pore

PATTERN STRUCTURE The pattern of a silkworm's cocoon is dictated not only by the properties of the material of the silk, but by the needs of the silkworm as well. The pores of the cocoon regulate the amount of oxygen and water that the silkworm receives while the fibers protect the silkworm from harmful external elements. The pore size is directly related to the fiber diameter, as seen above.

CONTEXT Nuue Skin is an architectural expression that is defined by the margins of time rather than space, making any building in any region of the world an appropriate context for its installation. Devised as a temporary structure, it becomes an ephemeral material interpretation of time, one that captures the advancements of technology available at the moment of its conception. The form presented here hypothesizes Nuue Skin built with the technology and materials potentially available in the year 2015.

SCREEN There is a screen integrated into the Nuue Skin that serves a variety of functions, from creating revenue for the building to bringing together the community.

MATERIAL recycle factor Since Nuue Skin is designed to be temporary, the material can be melted and recycled in order to form a new Nuue Skin for a different building, essentially leaving no waste.

CO2 environmental factor Nuue Skin is designed to filter most the CO2 out of the air, creating a similar effect to that of plants on the environment.

INTERACTIVE Rather than institutions, such as companies or the government, controlling what society is subjected to, the screen allows society to control and become the creators of what they see.

REVENUE The screen creates revenue by acting as a billboard for local or national companies to advertise within the neighborhood and for the expected patrons of the site.

$

COMMUNITY through displaying art or movies the screen brings together the community from not only the neighborhood but all around the city.

[voro]nueva A park is a pleasure ground in an urban setting that lets people relax, immerse, and interact within the city. In downtown San Antonio, the layout of the streets and buildings dictate a pattern when optimizing the shortest route and create a template for the urban park. The park site embraces these patterns and a relationship materializes and begins to shape the urban park. A more in depth research of patterns was done using the Voronoi algorithm, which gave us a unique pattern within the site. The goal was to find a template and use it to produce a unique park landscape. The experience created by the park, its landscape, and location makes it an interactive oasis. The park's purpose is to attract and receive the downtown population, encouraging them to spend an extensive amount of time there. Interactive light and water features are the park's voice and additional form of expressing itself to the visitor.

Focusing on the lush southwest Texas landscape and the colorful palette of plants it has to offer, the texture and appearance/form were considered when developing the plant list. Five zones are designated for planting in the park and organized the overall layout. Plants known to be hardy and good in urban settings were placed in high traffic areas and proximal to the street. Perennials complement the gardens when annuals carry out their cycle. The open space of the grassy lands provides shade during the long and sunny hot season. A green roof implemented on the cafe and bookstore takes advantage of the space and views to create more green space in the urban park. The planting of the gardens will be developed by a Voronoi pattern itself, creating a hierarchy and order to the spaces.

catastrophe The ceiling installation developed from the goal of giving definition to three spaces within the gallery: two primary presentation areas and a center seating area. while ultimately directing your attention to the podium. where presentations are held. The original concept included only one surface, but when panelization was applied, the surface was forced into becoming three individual surfaces that were unable to connect. Occupancy density was then looked at to further develop the details.

SPATIAL IDEA + CONCEPT The idea was to define 3 different spaces within one multifunctional space, while directing your attention to the podium for presentations, the room's primary intended function.

FORM The form emerged from an attempt to create fluidity to the initial shape. 3-dimensions created a dynamic catastrophic surface in which a separation and simplification followed in the process of fabrication.

FORM + PANELIZATION Each ribbon is made up of 29 ribs (U : 6, V : 23) and 125 panels. Each panel is conceived as quadrangular, where a fourth point varies on a diagonal based on density studies. Ultimately the quad was divided into two triangles with the same idea. The final material choice was T6 aluminum ribs with PETG allied plastic panels.

Dosel The task was to design an element for the studio utilizing the digital fabrication tools available. Dosel is conceived from the lack of space specifically designated to hang outerwear, which the inhabitants of the studio shed after transitioning from the harsh winter outdoors. The form is an interpretation of a welcoming gesture, almost like a canopy that embraces a guest in a shelter, and invites students to remove their winter wear and hang it on the Dosel, which is constructed to meld with the room itself. The word Dosel is the Spanish name for a regal canopy that you would find over a bed or a throne. The project came to fruition during a 4-day fabrication workshop at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain.

Archi-vilion (archetype + pavilion) Archi-vilion is derived from two conceptual purposes that the client deemed necessary. The first, which defines the architectural form, is to refrence the archetypal figure of a home, with pitched roofs that remind of the houses that sit not far from the site in the suburban developments. The second, and most imporant, was to enable a view to the pool and butterfly garden. All of this was achieved while carefully considering and adapting to the circulation established in the garden.

resonance Exploring the relationship between geometry, art, music, and their ability to transform a space, resonance is the first installation and exhibition by [D] CON studio for the purpose of reaching out and engaging the community and other creative disciplines. The installation consists of a cardboard rib structure held together by staples and then skinned with layers of paper mache tracing paper in order to create a seamless translucent surface. Within this structure a series of LED lights are strung along the entirety of the volume and controlled using a written code that converts music to various color ranges and patterns. Allowing people to both listen to and see music.
