EXPERIENCING THE UN-BUILT Studio 2 Thomas Kong SAIC Spring 2016
NATURAL INTERIOR LIGHT
NORTH-SOUTH SECTION
Mies van der Rohe’s Glass Skyscraper designed in 1922, an unrealized curvilinear glass and steel design, was untouched by economic or practical concerns. Superimposing the plan of the skyscraper onto the post office highlights Van der Rohe’s journey as an architect. The meandering glass walls of the superimposed structure within the post office create layers of transparency. These layers effectively blur the line between interior and exterior, existing and proposed, as well as enhance the ghosted environment necessary for experiencing the formerly un-built.
