As a World Heritage site, Willemstad, Curacao was so rich with history and breathtaking visuals it was the perfect backdrop for our 2022 Look Book shoot. As a Dutch colonial trading settlement, much of the architecture and urban area was still a modern-day reflection of that period. The beautiful buildings and wonderful rainbow of colors permeated through every street. Add in the stunning beaches, street art, diverse culture, and there was so much to be inspired by this little island. #RebelLevel is about always pushing the limits with our couture designs to showcase the exceptional and extravagant. We love taking these conceptual ideas to the extreme, experimenting with new ideas, and boy are we good at it! We do this to help inspire your own creativity and spark the imagination as you join us through this fantasy of fashion. Because as Rebels, we can absolutely turn fantasy into reality!

s all Challengers know, it’s not the size of the dog in the fight that counts, but the size of the fight in the dog. Put another way, Challengers have to act tougher than they are, punch above their weight, and dream giant dreams to have any hope of overcoming the 8,000lb gorillas in their industry. Six years ago, Rebel Athletic - at the time still a small business with about 35 full time employees - decided to do something different. Well, actually, something else different. Since inception Rebel had lived up to its name by challenging pretty much every convention in the category in order to take on, and beat, Bain Capital’s Varsity Brands - the multi-billion dollar goliath in cheer. For instance: Did they employ cheerleaders to design uniforms like everyone else? No. Rebel recruited only fashion school trained designers – with zero cheer experience. Did they manufacture everything in the US? No. Rebel went overseas to ensure that the team’s incredibly intricate designs could be made at the quality and price their customers required. Did they choose to serve only the big, highprofile, and high-paying gyms? No. Rebel democratized access to premium apparel for everyone with level-playing-field service, design, choice, quality, and prices. So, when the big fish in the category chose to take the simple route every year and shoot a standard catalog in a studio, and on the streets of New York, featuring girls and boys from some of their top gyms, Rebel, as usual, zigged when they zagged. And so began what is now an eagerly anticipated annual tradition: the Rebel Overseas Couture Shoot. A concept that has totally re-invented every facet of a ‘catalog shoot’, adding glitz, glam, and creating an entire experience that has taken on a life of its own. This is what Challengers do. They take the mundane and make it magnificent. They look at the ordinary and make it extra-ordinary. REBEL IN CURAÇAO | 25

However, Challengers don’t upend the established conventions of the category just for fun - although breaking and remaking rules is, in and of itself, a huge amount of fun for those imbued with the Challenger DNA. Rather, Challengers create change in order to add value to their communities, and their bottom line - a fact not lost on Karen Aldridge and the Rebel team. The Couture Shoot is expensive, time consuming, angst inducing (particularly in travel-restricted pandemic times) and all consuming. As are most good things. Here are five lessons from the Art of War tactics used by Rebel to keep the erstwhile market leader off balance.

Rebel has built its reputation by doing things the right way, by never cutting corners, and by sweating the small stuff. Sometimes, as on the 2021 shoot, quite literally. At Rebel everyone gets their hands dirty, and no-one is too high and mighty to do what it takes, whatever it takes. In 2020 Rebel took forty five people to Santorini at the invitation of the Greek government, despite no Americans being allowed into Greece at the time. It was an epic and much needed breath of fresh air for everyone involved, and everyone who viewed the epic adventure. It hinted at what a return to somewhat-normal might look like once the pandemic subsided. How then to top that in 2021? With most locations still off limits to Americans, and many others with inclement weather in September and October, the field was narrowed to six locations, out of which Curacao in the Netherland’s Antilles, rose to the top. Situated some sixty miles north of Venezuela, it’s a Caribbean paradise featuring wonderful, colorful architecture, incredible beaches, lush tropical scenery, and more murals than you can imagine. And, it’s very hot, very humid, and very sweaty. Curacao was equally demanding and rewarding. A trip of a lifetime for all concerned, and a miracle of passion, planning and perseverance. It wasn’t easy, but then Challengers wouldn’t have it any other way. As they say, ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’. Yet another of the many tried, true and often terrifying Challenger mantras. Note: per Curacao regulations, all travelers were COVID tested prior to departure, on day three on the island, and prior to return to the US. There were zero positive tests, and all 55 participants returned to the US on time, safe, healthy, and probably exhausted.

"Mia Bella is afraid of the water and she was seasick the entire trip out in the ocean for that photo shoot. This doesn’t show in the image, quite the opposite. That’s why I love this image, it shows the resiliency of the model and the power to find a moment of bliss, relaxation, while in physical pain. I choose to shoot through the ladder and create an artificial frame for the model. Also, the sun is adding a punch of color to the uniform and a caress-like feeling to the face of the model." "When we think of CuraÇao we see an explosion of happy and vibrant colors. But the island also has a secret, hidden under the ground. CuraÇao is formed on layers of marine coral limestone, which accumulated over millions of years. After sea levels dropped, these layers were exposed to atmospheric corrosion. That is how Hato Caves were born. Located on the north side of the island, covering an area of 53,000 sq ft, it is a home to the beautiful limestone formations, romantic pools, and waterfalls of stalactites hanging from the ceilings of the caves.
