We pause this week to honor and appreciate the many among us who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and/or transgender. You are our classmates, colleagues, team mates, friends, neighbors, house mates, cousins, nephews, nieces, cast mates, dorm mates, aunts, uncles, students, staff, administrative leaders, teachers, children, parents, sisters, and brothers -- and we treasure your presence among us! We affirm all the elements of The University of Mississippi Creed and deplore any disrespectful acts to any persons in our community, including those who identify as LGBTQ. The events of last week highlight the need for more understanding and education. We call on all in the University of Mississippi and Oxford communities to join with us in standing up for full access, respect and rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer and transgender persons and against behaviors, actions, writings, and laws which prevent them from being fully affirmed, included and valued. We wear rainbows this week – Pride Week! -- in celebration and solidarity with all in our community who identify as LGBTQ.
