» PUBLISHER’S DESCRIPTION

This 20th anniversary edition continues to inspire with its message of hope and Christian witness. Jonathan Toomey has (understandably) been sad, lonely and depressed since the death of his wife and baby. Locking himself away from the joys of the world, he's locally referred to as Mr Gloomy.

This is the story of our Saviour the strange starting scenes of this super-startling, supernatural Son. There’s a star, a stable, shepherds, sheep, star-scanning scientists and of course - our Saviour! And all these S words add up to a very S-y, very surprising, very splendid version of the Christmas story. Superb! This children’s book by Cameron Semmen’s reflects a truly Australian sense of humour - while telling the truly profound story of our Saviour.

One day a knock on the door leads to a wood carving commission. The widow McDowell and her son Thomas want a set of biblical characters to replace those lost from a nativity scene. They call in every few days to check on progress, and Toomey warms to their company and hospitality and stars teaching Thomas wood carving. Come Christmas day and there's a new found joy in his step

Will is depicted as a boy playing with his friends and Kate as young girl who loved to read. During childhood Will noticed poor and hungry people everywhere and promised himself to God at a young age. An elegantly illustrated collection of ten favourite Bible stories with an interesting twist. Margaret McAllister imaginatively retells these tales from the point of view of the women involved: Noah’s wife, Miriam, Ruth, Mary mother of Jesus, Pilate’s wife, Mary Magdalene are among some of the women who put their side of the story forward.

A wonderful retelling of an alltime-favourite tale from the Bible The story of Jonah is full of ingredients that children love: a dangerous mission; a man on the run; danger at sea; an incredible whale rescue; and a grand finale about forgiveness. Amanda Hall and Joyce Denham give this classic tale their own special twist. The beautiful illustrations and dramatic story line make this a great read.

A Horse for Kate: Horses & Friends 1 Author: Miralee Ferrell ISBN: 978-0781411141 Published: 01/03/2015 Publisher: David C.Cook RRP: $16.99 » PUBLISHER’S DESCRIPTION A horse of her own would be awesome. But Kate figures that might be a long way away, especially since she had to give up riding lessons and move to her late grandfather’s farm. Besides, it would be a lot more fun to have a best friend to ride with. When Kate discovers a barn on their new farm that’s perfect for a horse, and a dusty bridle too, she starts to think that her dream might come true. Then she meets Tori at school, who is totally the best. So when they discover a thoroughbred that appears to be all alone, could it be the answer to her prayers? Maybe. If she can convince her dad ... and figure out what’s going on with that horse. » OUR REVIEW This is an easy-to-read story aimed at girls. It tells the story of Kate and her family, who have moved to the country to live on her late grandfather’s farm. She’s

hopeful the barn on his property can be used to house the horse she so desperately wants, but her father’s only just started a new job and doesn’t have a lot of money to spare, and what they do have they need to put into special care for Kate’s brother, Pete, who is autistic. In spite of these setbacks, Kate makes a new friend at school, named Tori. She and Tori then go to a riding school and sign up for volunteer work, which gets them some free lessons, while they try and find out who owns the seemingly abandoned horse in a nearby field. Kate dreams of adopting it if its owner can’t be found. Eventually the owner is discovered. The horse, whose name is Capri, belongs to a man named Mr Miller and was his wife’s until she died. He is planning to sell Capri at an auction and Kate is worried the horse will end up going to a meat factory. However, when Capri disappears and Kate manages to find her, Mr Miller decides to give the horse to her. A Horse for Kate is a pleasant moral story that adheres to Christian principles. Kate and her family are clearly Christian and Kate prays for God’s help numerous times throughout the story which always results in the issues in her life being resolved in a positive way. Kate and her friend, Tori, present positive role models as they always try and do the right thing by each other and treat everyone in their lives with respect. Kate does feel resentful of her brother a little at the start of the novel but soon realises that this kind of behavior isn’t fair on Pete or her parents.

Major themes: family differences, autism, honesty, courage, compassion for animals.

Silver Spurs: Horses & Friends 2 Author: Miralee Ferrell ISBN: 978-0781411134 Published: 01/06/2015 Publisher: David C.Cook RRP: $16.99 » PUBLISHER’S DESCRIPTION Kate’s dream of owning a horse has finally happened. But now her best friend Tori has no money to buy a horse. So Kate comes up with a plan—she’ll raise money by boarding horses and hosting a show in her family’s barn. It seems the perfect solution until Melissa, the girl who disses Kate and Tori at school, shows up to board her horse, determined to compete in their show and win the silver spurs. Will their plan be ruined—or does God have something better in store for them all? Silver Spurs is a tale of overcoming fears and trusting God with your dreams. » OUR REVIEW In this second book in the series, Kate is a more realistic character than she was in A Horse for Kate, and the story is better for it. Kate suffers from jealousy, especially when the horrible girl in school, Melissa, decides to board her

horse in their barn when Kates family opens it for business to earn a few extra dollars. Melissa is definitely a difficult girl to love, and Kate, hardly surprisingly, has trouble dealing with her. However, Kate and her friend, Tori, learn a lot in this story about looking beyond the surface. Being around Melissa, especially during the show jumping competition that is part of the story, shows them that there are reasons why Melissa acts the way she does, and this helps them modify their responses to her behaviour. An entertaining book that primary aged girls should enjoy. jealousy, covetousness, not judging a book by its cover, coping with disappointment, overcoming obstacles.

Coco Franks has finally made it into the popular group when her dad decides to move the whole family to the country so they can bond. Social death is looming, her shoes are covered in mud and all Coco wants to do is get herself back to her city friends. After all, things cant get any worse, right? It'll take a boy with no dress sense and totally hick boots, and a contrary horse called Cupcake to bring Coco to her senses. But it might just be too little, too late. Love and Muddy Puddles is humorous realistic fiction aimed at readers aged 10 to 14 and horse lovers everywhere. Set in Australia, this clean teen romance is a funny and inspiring story of how a horse - and a change of perspective and heart - can change a young person's life.

Biblical events. With psychological insight and compassion, she gives a new perspective on stories we thought we knew.

» OUR REVIEW Fifteen Bible stories are retold from the points of view of observers who didn't have pivotal roles. This shift makes the stories multi-faceted, showing them in a whole new light. Some of the bystanders are close to people who did feature most strongly. Esau's wife, Basemath, quietly fumes about the stunt her husband's twin and their mother pulled on him. The mother of Elisha's servant, Gehazi, wonders if her son's attraction to material goods was partly her fault. The father of the former blind man doesn't feel completely willing to thank Jesus for his son's healing, since it brought a decrease in begging earnings and trouble with the authorities. Other bystanders happened to be nearby for whatever reason, perhaps in their line of work. The soldier who delivered messages between David and Joab gives his opinion on the king's dealings with Uriah and Bathsheba. The son of the bandit who attacked the Good Samaritan lurks in the shadows, watching the aftermath of the mischief. Revisiting action through the eyes of people we wouldn't expect packs a powerful punch. They sometimes highlight how strange the ways of God can appear to us, when compared with human wisdom. Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, ponders what appears to be a suicide mission to move the Israelites out of Egypt, when the only reasonable response would seem to be, 'It's not going to happen.' The man who could have won Ruth's hand explains why he chose to waive his family rights and let Boaz make the move as kinsman redeemer instead. A

servant in the household of Mary and Martha describes the general sense of disbelief when the respected Teacher turns out to be a simple, uneducated country yokel from Galilee with a rough rabble of followers, who twists the prophets' words until they make more sense than before, if possible. This book highlights not only the importance of each event, but the importance of each person who watches on. The author relates this to how each moment we live through may be more significant than we expect. There is a large section at the back with discussion notes. This book could be enjoyed on its own to read as a fascinating outlook on Christian history, used as individual prompts to discussion in religious studies, used as devotions or included in the program for further research on various events. Students may even be encouraged to write their own "bystander" stories.

There is a mix of short and long pieces and many could be performed or studied in class.Throughout this full colour book he introduces the reader to real life issues in India, Nepal and Timor-Leste and other countries he has visited to shed some light on the situation. The Viking Stone S Author: Nick Hawkes ISBN: 978-1925139488 Published: 01/11/2015 Publisher: Rhiza Press RRP: $19.99 » PUBLISHER’S DESCRIPTION Adam Hollingworth’s dreams are shattered by the death of his fiancée. The demons of grief pursue him as he journeys from Australia to England to hide amidst the marshes of the Thames Estuary, an area renowned for its secrets and its smuggling. An old man and his beautiful niece introduce Adam to the world of old wooden boats and the mysteries of the marshes. Together, they reignite Adam’s passion for life. Now, Adam must fight to keep himself and the people he loves from being murdered. Whether they survive will depend on his ability to use a remarkable secret of ancient Norse navigation—the Viking Stone. » OUR REVIEW Grieving the death of his fiancé, Adam Hollingworth has lost the will to live, let alone the will to teach. So when he finds himself travelling from Sydney’s north shore to an English boarding school he expects to fail the challenge before him. What he doesn’t expect is that he’ll make friends who will save him, help him heal and bring him back to life with love. The Viking Stone of the title is the one element which binds several cleverly woven storylines into one

intriguing plot. This is an adventure story, a romance, and a tale of grief & healing, mercy and compassion. Most of all it’s about loving friendship. Edward, the retired teacher and sailor who becomes Adam’s friend and mentor introduces him to the topic of God, the universe and the meaning of life. Written for adults but suitable for senior students, The Viking Stone offers a great opportunity to work through the plot development technique of combining several apparently different sets of characters whose stories eventually merge into one. With the picturesque and ancient backdrop of wholesome Abbey School life and sailing on the salt marshes of Essex, the sub-themes of drug use and related violence, with brief mentions of pornography and prostitution, are given an appropriately unglorified status. An enjoyable and gripping read with a satisfying finish where good wins over evil and love triumphs.

Major themes: bereavement, grief, family, disability, friendship, love, sailing, courage

Please be aware: Sub-themes involve drug use and related violence, pornography pp. 12-14; drug overdose fatality pp.29-32; drug-pushing and related prostitution pp. 84-85. These are the reasons this book is recommended for senior students only but these topics are addressed appropriately and given their proper place.

Chris has lost the sight in one eye and will never be able to fly again. He is not sure what to do with his life. At the same time as he discovers the cross may have come from a missionary working with John Flynn—a man who came from the Isle of Skye in Scotland— he finds he has inherited a croft on Skye. He meets a blind woman Morag Daniel who is caring for an orphaned boy, Ruan. Chris is shocked to discover he is Ruan’s next-of-kin. Morag was blinded in a savage attack while she was a university student in Edinburgh. As Chris becomes more and more entangled in the life of the community, falling in love with Morag in the process, he is drawn into the mystery of the Celtic cross: it is, it appears, the long-lost evidence in a crime going back over a century with vindictive and tragic echoes into the present. Very reminiscent of the early novels of Michael Phillips (not the more recent inferior ones): a sense of sweeping saga, robust and colourful characters, a buoyant sense of humour behind the banter, a touch of wholesome romance, an ancient feud, quite a chunk of Christian history and theology but not in a preachy, dogmatic way – always as integral to the storyline.

Major themes: self sacrifice, covenants, forgiveness, bitterness, friendship, the transforming power of love, integrity, Scottish history care for the environment Please be aware: 1. Alsdair drinks too much; however this is never presented as a positive. 2. Alsdair’s father is not who he appears to be; his mother has had a secret affair— there is no big deal made over this as no one knows it but, in retrospect, it explains the actions of one of the characters 3. Occasional very mild coarse language (arse, balls, bollocks etc.) plus 1 x bugger, 1 x bastard.

different people groups and places. There is no doubt he has delved into great depth in its creation and there is much that is entertaining in the tale of Elynna and her little band, with a great deal of bravery and courage shown in their battle against the evil forces personified in the daegmon, an evil monster they have set out to destroy. The book is long and detailed, and those who delight in intricate worldbuilding will have much to feast on. This does slow down the pace somewhat, but the action is still enjoyable, and the tale of the band of Gifted is an engaging one. The story also has a distinct Godconcept, consisting of the AllMaker and Maker, clearly meant to depict God the Father and God the Son. While this is only the first book in a trilogy, it’s clear the use of the good power of the All-Maker will be significant in defeating the evil, demonic power of the daegmon.
