Meet the Camp Leaders! Eileen Bigham is a writing teacher extraordinaire. Teaching is her passion and it shows as she engages children through story telling, critical thinking exercises and dramatic play. A graduate of Eastern Michigan University, Eileen holds endorsements in language arts and fine art, and is a full-time elementary art teacher in Oak Park. Eileen enjoys working with her family; her sons Christopher and Daniel work in the camps. Daniel is an award winning poet, and a former member of The Ann Arbor Youth Poetry Slam Team. He is a published writer, and regularly performs with Ann Arbor Wordworks, a local collegiate poetry troupe. Chris is an avid chess player, whose passion for the game began at the tender age of eight. He was taught the game by his grandfather who is a certified chess master in Japan. He constantly seeks opponents of greater skill than his own and passes this love of strategy and competition on to his students. Seventeen years ago, Bigham created and implemented the popular “Summer Writing Camp” which continues to grow each year, sparking the creative voice of thousands. “Young people begin to feel important when they realize the stories of their own lives are powerful!” enthuses Bigham. “I could talk about my students and their amazing stories all day!” Eileen’s passion for teaching and creativity has led to the development of many other popular camps. Watershed Moments

Starting at the tiniest creek we wind our way to Lake Erie. We will dip into fishing holes with our homemade poles and meet the creatures that dwell in the muck. Canoes will take you from bank to bank. Thanks to you, the waterways will be cleaner as our annual beach clean-up at Lake Erie returns this week. (Last year’s activities won Green Camp a State Environmental Partnership Award!). Ability to swim not required.

Week 5 ID# 8901.805 7/22 – 7/26

Michigan Rocks!

It may look like a mitten, but it’s made of stone! How did all this rock get here? What did pressure, heat and time have to do with its story? Come along for a wonderful week of collecting rocks and fossils, cutting and polishing your own rocks, and digging into the foundation of our state!

Week 6 ID# 8901.806

7/29 – 8/2

Nature’s Architects

NEW!

Theme

Investigate fantastic structures found in nature: beehives, wasp nests, bird nests, spider webs, ant colonies, chipmunk tunnels, ant-lion cones and crayfish towers. Animals create structures and homes that people find astounding. Have fun creating your own “nest”. We challenge you to see how you can be inspired by all these creatures and be a builder and architect yourself!

Week 7 ID# 8901.807

8/5 – 8/9 Treasures in the Trash

As the saying goes….”Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without” Have fun with the three Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! We spend our lives surrounded by ‘stuff’, but stuff can go keep going around. This week the Green Adventures crew will look into where it all comes from, and, especially, where it goes after we’re done with it. This week includes trips to recycle alley (S. Industrial resale shops) as well as the always-popular ‘Take Apart’ day and our annual trip to the Ann Arbor Materials Recovery Facility.

Week 8 ID#8901.808

8/12 – 8/16

Incredible Edible Harvest

After working in the Green Camp Gardens all summer (and eating all those yummy fresh snacks!) this week is all about collecting, picking and preparing food. What can you do with tons of tomatoes, herbs and weird looking squashes? What spices do you put in a jar of pickles? How do you get honey out of those tiny honeycombs? Find out as we cook, preserve, visit kitchens, talk to chefs, and, most importantly … enjoy cooking and sharing meals with our summer friends! Rec&Ed 2013 summer camps 27

Safety Town! D

o you have a child ready to start kindergarten in the fall? Then don’t miss out on sending your youngster to Safety Town, a popular education program offered each summer only to incoming kindergartners. Your child learns safety awareness in a fun and entertaining way using a child-size mock Ann Arbor “town” explored on bikes. Guest speakers include:

Safety Town Questions? Call 734-994-2300, ext. 53106

Key Information • Safety Town is held at Dicken Elementary School, 2135 Runnymeade • Safety Town is for children entering Kindergarten in Fall 2013. • All campers receive a FREE T-shirt.

• “Buster the Bus”, AAPS’ own talking school bus • “Andy the Ambulance” HVA’s talking ambulance • Police officers • Firefighters • Healthcare workers • Safety experts from the Washtenaw County Coalition The curriculum covers bike helmets and booster seats, stranger danger, fire safety, riding a school bus, pedestrian safety, etc. Songs, games, stories and art projects reinforce the lessons. The 2013 program is sponsored by Ann Arbor Public Schools Community Education & Recreation Department in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Police Department and many community partners. The goal of the program is to help kids evaluate “safe” from “unsafe” when confronted with potentially dangerous situations. We are aware of two incidents when Safety Town training helped save the lives of past participants! Students can be placed with friends as long as registration forms are submitted together and a special request is listed on the forms. In most cases we are able to place children with others attending their school. Scholarships are available for those who financially qualify. The last day of the session is a graduation ceremony. Parents are invited to attend the brief ceremony, after which children are dismissed at approximately 10:30 AM. Once enrolled in Safety Town or the camp combination, you will receive a separate email with consent and emergency forms to be completed prior to the start of the program. Also available is our Safety Town & Camp Combination, which provides a wrap-around program Monday-Friday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.

“My grandson loved the Safety Town camp program. It was interesting, well organized and age appropriate. I was very impressed with Officer Jason Gold. He was personable and related well to the children.” Ms. Karen Isom, 38 year public educator

Eligible camps have an asterisk in the Table of Contents (page 3). You will not receive a discount if you enroll the same child in these camps in separate transactions. Safety First A parent or guardian of preschool and elementary aged children must accompany the child(ren) into camp everyday and sign-in the child. At the end of each day, the parent or guardian must come into the building to pick up the child and sign-out the child(ren). If you are sending a relative or friend to pick up your child, please provide a written note giving that person permission. Dress Appropriately Make sure your child is dressed for comfort, safety and appropriate temperatures. Avoid dark colored jeans and t-shirts on a hot day, as well as clothing with strings attached that may get caught on play equipment. Shoes are a challenge, too. Most camps go outside everyday so tennis shoes are the best option. Sun Screen We recommend putting sunscreen on your child before your child comes to camp. Campers play outside almost every day. Gather supplies This may include food and/or snacks, water bottles, and sunscreen. Make sure that whatever clothes, backpack and towels your child brings, it's okay if it gets wet, soiled or ripped. Before sending items along, label them with your child's name using a permanent marker. Medications If your child must take a medication during the camp day, the Ann Arbor Public Schools medication policy states that the on-site administration of any medication requires written authorization on file. The authorization must be signed by both a physician and a parent, whether the medication is prescribed or over-the-counter. All medications must be in their original containers and clearly labeled.

42 Rec&Ed 2013 Summer Camps

Camps follow the district policy governing the use of Epi-pen injections for insect or food allergies. It is the parent’s responsibility to communicate any special concerns to the Camp Coordinator and to provide any necessary training to camp staff. We require at least two weeks notice for staff to be trained in the use of the Epi-pen. Allergies If you receive a message or see a sign indicating that a building or area in a building is “nut aware” or “dairy free,” please respect that rule when you send food with your child. Please do not send food containing nuts or manufactured at facilities that produce nut products. Staff will follow the Ann Arbor No Nut SACC Snack and Nutrition policy. If your child has an allergy action plan, please let us know at least four weeks in advance of your child’s participation in the camp. Call 734-994-2298 or 734-994-2300 ext. 53219. Special Accommodations Rec&Ed will make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations for children with special needs. Staff needs to talk to parents at least four weeks in advance of the camp start day to be able to accomplish this. Please call 734-994-2300, ext. 53219 at least four weeks in advance to talk through your child’s situation. Packing a Safe Lunch Packed lunches at camp are often kept at room temperature for 4-6 hours. There are several ways to keep a packed lunch safe to eat. Choose foods that may safely be kept at room temperature. Select and handle food carefully to prevent food poisoning. Insulated, soft-sided lunch boxes or bags are best for keeping food cold, but pack at least two ice sources with perishable food in any type of lunch bag or box you use. More good advice can be found at http://www.fsis.usda. gov/FACTSheets/Keeping_Bag_Lunches_Safe/index.asp Trained Staff Make the Difference Staff members receive ongoing training in the areas of child development, quality environment, programming, behavior management, health and safety. Each camp has at least one staff member who is CPR and First-aid certified. T-shirts Many of our camps provide a T-shirt for each camper. Please indicate the t-shirt size of your child on the registration form. You will be required to complete this information when you register online.
