Writing Camp Advanced I & 2 Advanced 1 writers will spend an entire week focused on accelerated writing strategies. Writers will be encouraged to expand their repertoire and write several narrative pieces. Then each camper will select one piece to take through an extensive critique and revision process. This piece can then be used in the Advanced 2 writing curriculum and turned into an illustrated book. Campers in Advanced 2 will practice more writing techniques used by the “pros”! Participation in both weeks is highly encouraged but not required. Camper may enroll in either Advanced 1 or 2. Students provide lunch, beverage and snacks. Director: Eileen Bigham. 1 week. Unique to this camp, students synthesize their afternoon experience through writing, scientific inquiry and problem solving. Students will utilize skills they learned the previous school year, while preparing them to build on those skills in the upcoming school year. Friday mornings are set aside for special interactive hands on projects based at the site.
The classroom is outdoors in the afternoon... the sky is the limit! In the afternoons, Naturalists Dave Szczygiel and John Stahly lead campers in explorations of a variety of natural areas that provide a theme and context for the morning math and language arts lessons. Each Friday afternoon all campers have fun swimming at a local public pool.

A True Story My son’s Asher and one other ten year old boy, along with a slew of older teenagers and young adults, rocked the floor behind their instructor, Maurice. They were precise when they were supposed to work together. They were energized when they were free styling. They were completely within themselves. The owned their experience. They were having FUN. It was awesome... in every sense of the word. With Maurice teaching, my son learned how to express himself and to feel the music run through his core. He embraced everything, made friends, became part of a team, and loved every minute of it. Asher’s mom
Maurice also teaches Break Dance at Quest Camp! See pages 10 & 11.

Join us for making big, messy and fun art that adults would not dare to let their children do at home. The theme this summer is Animals. D
o you have a child ready to start kindergarten in the fall? Send your youngster to Safety Town, a popular education program offered each summer. Your child learns safety awareness in a fun and entertaining way using a child-size mock Ann Arbor “town” explored on bikes. Guest speakers include:
• “Buster the Bus”, AAPS’ own talking school bus • “Andy the Ambulance” HVA’s talking ambulance • Police officers • Firefighters • Healthcare workers • Safety experts from the Washtenaw County Coalition
The curriculum covers bike helmets and booster seats, stranger danger, fire safety, riding a school bus, pedestrian safety, etc. Songs, games, stories and art projects reinforce the lessons. The 2011 program is sponsored by Ann Arbor Public Schools Community Education & Recreation Department in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Police Department. The goal of the program is to help kids evaluate “safe” from “unsafe” when confronted with potentially dangerous situations. We are aware of two incidents when Safety Town training helped save the lives of past participants! Students can be placed with friends as long as registration forms are submitted together and a special request is listed on the forms. In most cases we are able to place children with others attending their school. Please plan on staying with your child for a few minutes the first day to find the location of the classroom, receive a brief orientation and meet the teacher. Scholarships are available for those who financially qualify. The last day of the session is a graduation ceremony. Parents are invited to attend the brief ceremony, after which children are dismissed. Sign up for our Safety Town & Camp Combination, which provides a wrap-around program Monday-Friday from 7:30am to 5:30pm.

The Parents’ Page Entering or Graduating?
Medications
Throughout this catalog you will find that the grades listed are for children who are entering that grade indicated this fall (20112012). Safety Town Program and the Safety Town Camp is only for children entering Kindergarten this fall, 2011.
If your child must take a medication during the camp day, the Ann Arbor Public Schools medication policy states that the on-site administration of any medication requires written authorization on file. The authoriza‑ tion must be signed by both a physician and a parent, whether the medication is prescribed or over-the-counter. All medica‑ tions must be in their original containers and clearly labeled.
Register Early, Save Money Register by May 8th and pay the Early Bird fee. This gives you significant savings each week of camp.
Multi-Week Discount Any child enrolled in 5 or more weeks of full day summer camps (Quest, TNT, Green Adventures and all Literature and Enrich‑ ment camps) in one transaction will receive 10% off the total cost. See page 14 for more information. You will not receive a discount if you enroll the same child in one camp this week and the same child next week in a second transaction. To receive the discount you must pay for the five or more weeks of camp at the same time. There is a multicamper enrollment discount for Rock Band Boot Camp or Jazz Camp, page 35.
Safety First
Camps follow the district policy governing the use of Epi-pen injections for insect or food allergies. It is the parent’s responsibility to communicate any special concerns to the Camp Coordinator and to provide any nec‑ essary training to camp staff. We require at least two weeks notice for staff to be trained in the use of the Epi-pen.
Allergies If you receive a message or see a sign indi‑ cating that a building or area in a building is “no nut” or “dairy free,” please be respectful of that rule if you send food with your child. Staff will follow the Ann Arbor Public Schools’ guidelines for managing life threatening food allergies. If your child has an allergy action plan, please let us know at least two weeks in advance of your child’s participation in the camp. Call 734-994-2300 ext. 53219.
Packing a Safe Lunch Packed lunches at camp are often kept at room temperature for 4-6 hours. Foods which will be kept at room temperature need to be selected and handled carefully to prevent food poisoning. There are two ways to keep a packed lunch safe to eat. One is to choose foods which may safely be kept at room temperature. The other is careful handling of foods.
Camp T-Shirts Many camps provide a T-shirt for each camper. Please indicate the t-shirt size of your child on the registration form. You will be required to complete this information when you register online.
Trained Staff Make the Difference! Staff members receive ongoing training in the areas of child development, qual‑ ity environment, programming, behavior management and health and safety. Each camp has at least one staff member who is CPR and first-aid certified.
Each day a parent or guardian of preschool and elementary aged children must accom‑ pany the child(ren) into the camp and sign the child in. At the end of each day of camp, the parent or guardian must come into the building to pick up the child and sign the child(ren) out. If you are sending a relative or friend to pick up your child, we ask that you provide a written note giving that person permission.
