Hooked on Fun Camps with Eileen Bigham! New! camps this year ... Constitution, Art Like an Egyptian and Dojo Training For 18 years, Eileen has provided a variety of enriching and fun camps for children and adolescents through AAPS Rec&Ed. Many of her camps, such as Writing Camps and the Harry Potter theme camp, are perennial favorites. But Eileen never rests in finding new themes and curricula that work in a summer camp setting. Eileen brings her many years of experience as an elementary art teacher to her camps. A graduate of Eastern Michigan University, she holds endorsements in both language arts and fine art. Teaching is her passion and it shows as she engages children through story telling, critical thinking exercises and dramatic play. Eileen enjoys working with her family; her sons Christopher and Daniel help administer the camps. Daniel is an award winning poet, and a former member of The Ann Arbor Youth Poetry Slam Team. He is a published writer, and regularly performs with Ann Arbor Wordworks, a local collegiate poetry troupe. Chris is an avid chess player, whose passion for the game began at the tender age of eight. He was taught the game by his grandfather who is a certified chess master in Japan. He constantly seeks opponents of greater skill than his own and passes this love of strategy and competition on to his students.

Questions? Call 734-994-2300, ext. 53106
Do you have a child ready to start Kindergarten or First grade in the fall? Then enroll your child in Safety Town, a popular education program offered each summer. Your child learns safety awareness in a fun and entertaining way using a child-size mock Ann Arbor “town” explored on bikes. Guest speakers include: “Buster the Bus”, AAPS’ own talking school bus, Police officers, Firefighters and Healthcare workers. Goal: to help kids evaluate “safe” from “unsafe” when confronted with potentially dangerous situations. The curriculum covers bike helmets and booster seats, stranger danger, fire safety, riding a school bus, pedestrian safety and additional topics. Songs, games, stories and art projects reinforce the lessons. The 2014 program is sponsored by Ann Arbor Public Schools Community Education & Recreation Department in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Police Department and many community partners. Students can be placed with friends as long as registration forms are submitted together and a special request is listed on the forms. In most cases we are able to place children with others attending their school. • Scholarships are available for those who financially qualify. • The last day of the session is a graduation ceremony. Parents are invited to attend the brief ceremony, after which children are dismissed at approximately 10:30 AM. • Once enrolled in Safety Town you will receive a separate email with consent and emergency forms to be completed prior to the start of the program. • Participants are dismissed immediately following graduation on Friday(approx. 10:30 AM)

Green Adventures Camp (GAC) Grades 1-5. Monday-Thursday mornings campers have a small group experience led by exemplary AAPS teachers. Friday mornings are set aside for special interactive hands on projects based at the site. Unique to this camp, students synthesize their afternoon experience through writing, scientific inquiry and problem solving, extending their learning and reducing typical learning losses that can occur over the summer. The classroom is outdoors in the afternoon... the sky is the limit! In the afternoons, Naturalists Dave Szczygiel, John Stahly, Jane Hayes and Jonathan Gilles lead campers in explorations of a variety of natural areas that provide a theme and context for the morning math and language arts lessons. Each Friday afternoon all campers have fun swimming at a local public pool.
Grades 6-8. Building on the success of our award-winning Green Adventures Camp (GAC) Rec&Ed is pleased to offer 8 weeks of Stewardship program for middle school students (rising 6th through rising 8th graders). For our middle school stewards, we’ve expanded the GAC curriculum, adding a leadership component and fostering leadership skills in supportive small groups. Certified teachers and naturalists, using the GAC model of dynamic academics in the morning and field experiences in the afternoons, lead the middle school campers. Offered in the same location as Green Adventures Camp, all 8 weeks of engaging science, literacy, art, community service, team building, and environmental education are now available to Stewardship campers. Stewardship campers explore Green Adventures weekly themes in more depth, using tools and methods geared specifically towards the middle school age group. They will spend more time involved in community service activities. These themes parallel GAC themes found on page 0.
Eligible for 10% discount when enrolling one child in 4 or more weeks of full-day camps in one transaction.

Green Adventure campers explore how to more effectively implement the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Become better stewards of the stuff you use and the land you live on. This week includes trips to recycle alley (resale shops on South Industrial Highway), the always-popular “Take Apart” day and our annual trip to the Ann Arbor Materials Recovery Facility.
