30th - 06th May BA GENERAL ILLUSTRATION Illustration is both creative and exciting, with everything from comic book art to book jacket design, from paintings for picture books to packaging and advertising. The illustration course, within the School of Contextual Studies & Visual Communication offers the students the opportunities to think visually to generate new and exciting ideas for illustrations, with past students producing illustrations for Penguin Books, Walker Books, The Times, The Guardian and the NHS. The scope for an illustrator is endless and Swansea’s Metropolitan University’s General Illustration course prepares students for an industry, which calls upon the illustrator to design and communicate ideas, raise awareness and sell products through the art of word and image.

10th - 14th Graphic Design Disperse|08 is the culmination of three years of study and increasingly mature creative work by students in their final year of the Graphic Design BA(hons) programme. Taking place at the Swansea Grand Theatre, this years show promises to build on Swansea Metropolitan University’s already strong reputation for producing exceptional Graphic Design graduates.

The 2008 graduates come from across the British Isles and indeed from across the world, each with their own personalities, which translate into a spectrum of individual styles and ideas. Work ranges from corporate identity and design for print through to web design and multimedia, as well as the more conventional design work, there are more experimental and esoteric pieces which push the boundaries of the uses for the language of Graphic Design. The energy and ambition to succeed is clear across every project, and reflects the personalities of those who have produced them.

The exciting programme offers students the opportunity to be part of this creative industry. They explore and develop skills that enable them to formulate and devise different ways of advancing and targeting their creativity, so as to prepare a portfolio that helps get them that first break. Advertising permeates our lives - it is all around us, and constantly confronts us. Design for advertising is a challenging profession that not only encompasses these broad range of disciplines but above all, requires an ability to communicate and inform. This ‘art of persuasion’ requires innovative individuals who can actively seek out ways to creatively advance and promote a product or service. The group are a lively dynamic team who have developed the brand ‘Kaboom’ as their exhibition theme - an explosion of ideas that we think you will enjoy! www.kaboom.me.uk

17th - 30th PHOTOGRAPHY The BA (Hons) Photography In The Arts and BA (Hons) Photojournalism programmes share the common philosophy of promoting the opportunity for the students to explore the world, themselves and photography itself in a contemporary and progressive manner. The ethos focuses on the exploration of the subjective individual perspective leading to the attainment of a ‘unique voice’ with photographic communication. The diversity of approach to the subject of photography adopted by this group of students reflects the varied opportunities available within the teaching, learning and practical facilities of the department where, contemporary digital equipment is complemented by traditional and historical chemical-based workshop areas.

30th - 07th June FINE ART This years Fine Art degree show will reflect the general philosophy that lies at the core of our teaching at Swansea. We encourage students to take ‘art history’ not just as a given but as a interpretive resourse and as an element within an ever expanding field of contemporary arts practice. Fundermental and equal to this is an awareness of the time within which we are working - the world around us! Within this context ,both concept and practice are placed in active diologue. We celebrate the potential of all mediums from drawing and painting through to video and performance.

Participating art colleges at the Fair are varied and this year include those from Brighton, Bournemouth, Nottingham, Manchester, Reading, and Goldsmiths. Each college creates their own tailor-made exhibition as part of Free Range, which rotate weekly over an 8 week period in several locations. Varied disciplines including Graphics, illustration, printmaking, product design and textiles can be seen at the Fair and suit a variety of taste. Popular with collectors, students, universities, employers, the media, industry shakers and everyday art lovers alike, Free Range has grown to become one of the world’s largest art fairs, now occupying the vast historic 11 acre site at the Old Truman Brewery off Brick Lane in East London. Located at the centre of London’s creative community, the free event offers an unrivalled opportunity for both the artist and the public. Free Range Director, Tamsin O’Hanlon explains, “Free Range is an unprecedented display of youth, art and creativity. It’s vast scale, variety and location sets it apart from other more parochial student art events. Free Range offers the best opportunity for the general public and the art-buying community to uncover tomorrow’s talent at today’s prices.”

New Designers is the foremost event in graduate design and, fulfilling its annual promise, New Designers 2008 marks the emergence of the year’s brightest talents presenting their unique and fascinating degree work. The show is exciting, surprising, and vibrant – a hotbed of smart thinking and original ideas brought together in the dynamic environment of the Business Design Centre. Not only does New Designers launch the careers of some 4000 newly qualified designers, but it also unveils the design stars of the future. In the two part exhibition there is jewellery, textiles, fashion accessories, applied arts, furniture, product design, architecture and graphics, and that is just the starting point. Fresh from the UK’s design leading courses, exhibitors are keen to attract public and professional attention, and work is available to commission and to buy. Trend spotter Thorsten van Elten is curating the perennially popular One Year On feature where especially selected design entrepreneurs showcase collections destined for shops, galleries and private clients. There is a series of fascinating seminars and talks by some of the most influential names in the design professions, providing guidance, tips and insights into different aspects of the creative industries. And, for prospective students there are the Schools’ Days that no school leaver considering a degree in design will want to miss. They are an invaluable opportunity to check out which course best suits a would-be designer. For more information see: www.newdesigners.com
