ReciclArte Up-cycled Eco-Jewelry The jewelry presented here, made from pulltabs and fabric remnants, is the fruit of a socio-environmental project which seeks to produce a change in the way waste materials are seen, by demonstrating that common “trash” can be “up-cycled” into attractive and useful items. The objective is to provoke concrete actions in response to our individual responsibility to preserve Planet Earth.
Aluminum is light in weight, does not rust, tarnish, or provoke allergic reactions. All items can be washed with mild soap.
Por ser confeccionados a partir de retazos de tela donados, cada artículo es exclusivo, único, y surge de la creatividad de cada mujer, trabajando desde sus hogares y centros de acopio.
The sale of these articles contributes to generating alternative revenues for groups of women artisans who dedicate both their creative imagination and their labor in recuperating these materials, to preserving the environment. The proceeds are used to strengthen environmental education programs through community recycling in all parts of rural Costa Rica. Since the jewelry is designed from pieces of donated fabric, each article is exclusive, one-of-a-kind, given a new life through the creativity of each individual woman, working from their homes and recycling centers. The pull-tabs are carefully selected, soaked, dried, filed and sorted. The fabric remnants are also soaked and color-set, then woven with the backside turned inside, so there are no rough edges. All are washable.

Los fondos recaudados con la venta son destinados a fortalecer programas de educación ambiental en diferentes comunidades donde viven estas mujeres en Costa Rica.
Los abre-fácil son cuidadosamente seleccionados, lavados, secados y clasificados. La tela también está lavada y ajustada por colores, es tejida con el lado abierto de revés, de modo que no hay bordes ásperos. ReciclArte es un proyecto socio-ambiental, con el objetivo de cambiar la actitud frente al desecho, demostrando que un residuo puede transformarse en un bien de gran belleza. Nos permite hacer conciencia y tomar acciones concretas dentro de la responsabilidad de cada ciudadano y ciudadana de nuestro Planeta Tierra.
El aluminio es ligero, no se oxida, no mancha ni provoca reacciones alérgicas. Todos los artículos se pueden lavar con un jabón suave.

This necklace is made with a cross-weave on both sides, using two contrasted, color-coordinated parallel strips. Most are reversible, thanks to the creativity of Lisa from Coto Brus. Full length of 32 inches, its sliding clasp makes it adjustable to many lengths. The clasp and tie ends are finished with wood or glass beads, or with pull-tabs.
Este collar estĂĄ hecho con un tejido cruzado en ambos lados, con 2 tiras de color emparejado contrastadas. La mayorĂa son reversibles, gracias a la creatividad de Lisa, una de las mujeres participantes de Coto Brus. La longitud total es aproxativamente 80 cm. Dedicated to Gloria from Isla Chira who created the style, this necklace has only one strip of fabric, which also can be fringed, designed on purpose to show more of the aluminum pull-tabs. With a full length of 32 inches, it is adjustable to many lengths. The clasp and tie ends are finished with wood or glass beads, or with pull-tabs.

Este collar se compone de una sola tira de tela, que también puede ser flecado, diseñado con el propósito de mostrar más el métal de los abre-fácil. La longitud es aproxativamente 80 cm. In her native Guanacaste, Kenia invented an entirely new weave, a longer style of necklace, with neither clasp nor tie. It comes in two lengths: 14 inches or 18 inches. Slim and elegant, a short and long Kenia are often worn together for a strong fashion statement.
En su natal Guanacaste, Kenia inventó un tejido completamente nuevo, un estilo de collar más largo, sin cierre, sin tiras para atar. Viene en dos longitudes 35 cm. o 45 cm. Delgado y elegante, un Kenia corto y otro largo pueden se usan juntos, todavía más de moda.

Single Lisa bracelet

This is the most popular of the bracelet models, made with either a cross-weave using matching fabric strips, or a straight weave of parallel strips. Its adjustable design lets it stretch from an average 2.5 inch diameter to a full 3.25 inch diameter, then retracts back on the wrist, thanks to its unique weave. Its width is 1 inch.
El más popular de los modelos de pulsera, la Lisa está hecha con un tejido cruzado a juego con dos tiras de tela contrastada, o con un tejido recto de tiras combinadas paralelas. Su diseño ajustable permite que se extienda desde un promedio de 7 cm de diámetro hasta 8,5 cm y se retrae de nuevo en la muñeca, gracias a su tejido único. Su ancho es de 3 cm.
Double bracelet

Composed of three parallel color-matched strips of fabric, the double bracelet comes in a variety of styles: fringed on both outer edges, or just one fringed strip in the center, or all three sewn strips. The average diameter measures 2.5 inches, stretching to 3.25 inches, with a width of 1.5 to 2 inches depending to the length of the fringe. Some double bracelets are commonly worn by men, especially in Europe.
Compuesta de tres tiras paralelas de tela de colores combinadas, la pulsera doble viene en una variedad de estilos: flecos en ambos bordes exteriores, o sólo una tira de flecos en el centro, o todas las tres tiras cosidas. El diámetro promedio es de 7 cm, pero se extiende a 8,5 cm. Con un ancho de 3,75 a 5 cm., según la longitud de la franja. Algunas pulseras dobles son usadas comúnmente por los hombres, especialmente en Europa.

This bracelet is made with a fringed strip on one side and a sewn strip on the other, woven to mirror the style of the Pre-Columbian necklace. This bracelet also is adjustable with an average diameter of 2.5 inches. Its width is from 1 to 1.25 inches, depending to the length of the fringe.
Esta pulsera está hecha con una tira mechada en un lado y una tira cosida por el otro, tejida para duplicar el estilo del collar precolombino. Esta pulsera también es ajustable con un diámetro medio de 7 cm. Su ancho es de 3 a 3,5 cm, según la longitud de la franja.
Kenia bracelet

The simplest and gayest of the bracelets, this version uses the same weave as the Kenia necklace, just a little over half an inch in width. The original design of its bowed sliding closure, permits it to adjust to a diameter as small as 2 inches, up to 3 inches. Children love them!
La más simple y más alegre de las pulseras, esta versión utiliza el mismo tejido que el collar Kenia, mide sólo un poco más de 1.5 cm. de ancho. El diseño original de su cierre deslizante permite que se adapte a un diámetro de entre 6 a 7.5 cm. A las niñas les encanta!
Belts / Fajas
Single belt
This belt is composed of two stripes of fabric, woven crisscross, straight or slightly fringed, often reversible, for two belts in one. The length varies from 30 to 40 inches, thanks to a unique button-style clasp, that can be fixed on one of three opposite pull-tabs, spaced at 3 inches intervals. An alternative version comes with long ties, finished with wooden beads, to make an attractive bow. The width is from 1 to 1.5 in. Try it as a long necklace for double use!
Double belt
Similar to the single belt, but composed rather of three parallel strips of fabric, so twice the width: from 1.5 to 2 inches. The outer edges can be fringed depending on the fabric used. It measures from 30 to 40 inches, adjustable in the same manner as the single belt (see above), also worn as a long, wide necklace.
Kenia belt
The same Kenia weave as the Kenia necklace is used for this delicate belt, however with just a little over half an inch in width. The length is adjustable in the same manner as the single belt (see above). It can also be used either as a long necklace or wrapped twice to make a twostrand version: three articles in one!
Faja sencilla
Esta faja se compone de dos tiras de tela entrecruzadas o tejidas recta, a veces con un pequeño fleco, a menudo reversibles, para tener dos fajas en una. La longitud varía de 75 a 100 cm. gracias a su único diseño de botón decierre, que se fija en una de los tres abris-fácil opuestos, espaciados a intervalos de 6 cm. Una versión alternativa trae lazos largos, terminados con perlas de madera, para hacer un atractivo nudo. Pruébelo como un collar largo, para doble uso!
Fajón
La faja doble es similar a la sencilla, pero compuesta de tres tiras paralelas, y de dos veces el ancho: 4 a 5 cm. Los bordes exteriores pueden ser mechados según la tela utilizada. Mide de 75 a 100 cm. es ajustable de la misma manera que la faja simple (véase arriba), o con lazos para atar. Puede también usarse como un collar largo.
Faja Kenia
El tejido del collar Kenia se utiliza para esta delicada cinta, con un poco más de la mitad de una pulgada de ancho. La longitud es ajustable de la misma manera que la faja sencilla (véase arriba). Esta fajita se puede utilizar también como un collar largo, o le da vuelta dos veces para hacer una versión de doble cinta: tres artículos en uno!
Earrings / Aretes
This is the one article of this collection that really lets the women artisans show off their creativity! They fashion them according to their whims and fantasies: long, short, fringed, bias cut or straight, any style goes, though they often design them to match the necklace they made with the same fabric, eventually the bracelet of the same fabric, in order to make a two or three-piece matching set (see photos in next page).
Este es el artículo de la colección que realmente permite a las mujeres artesanas mostrar su creatividad! Diseñan de acuerdo a sus caprichos y fantasías: aretes largos, cortos, con flecos, cortado al sesgo o recto, cualquier estilo va, a pesar de que a menudo les diseñan para que coincida con el collar que hicieron con la misma tela, o con la pulsera de la misma tela, para formar un juego de dos o tres piezas (ver fotos abajo).
Story of ReciclArte The ReciclArte story began in 2008. With the objective of generating alternative revenues for their rural recycling centers, several women from remote villages began to be trained by the project in the design of jewelry made from recyclable materials, recuperated from the recycling programs they manage. This original initiative marries art, recycling, environmental education and gender equality, coordinated by a small group of volunteers working within the Costa Rican environmental non-profit Association Terra Nostra. They began designing fashion accessories using pull-tabs from discarded beverage cans, woven together with colorful fabric remnants, converting them into unique necklaces, bracelets, earrings and belts.

Since late 2007, the attractive and original accessories are offered in hotel and airport gift-shops, art galleries and souvenir retailers throughout Costa Rica, responding to a growing market of eco-conscious tourists. In order to meet the challenge of expanding the jewelry-making activity while continuing community recycling, they needed to incorporate more rural recycling centers into their project: many more artisans. New training was required, to meet the growing sales, including Europe.

The ReciclArte women called “campesinas conservacionistas” now turn to the first-world consumer, whose environmental awareness and sustainable purchases can lend them a hand, to help their recycling centers survive, so they can further educate their communities in protecting nature through recycling, and thereby develop a culture of environmental responsibility in Central America.

Historia de ReciclArte La historia del Proyecto ReciclArte inicio en el 2008. Con el objetivo de generar ingresos alternativos para sus centros de acopio, varias mujeres de tres centros de acopio localizados en comunidades lejanas comenzaron a recibir capacitaciones en el tema del diseño de joyería hecha con materiales reciclables, materiales que eran recuperados por ellas mismas. Esta iniciativa original une el arte, el reciclaje, la educación ambiental y la igualdad de género, y es coordinada por un grupo de voluntarias ambientalistas de la Asociación Terra Nostra. Las mujeres comenzaron a diseñar accesorios de moda, utilizando los abre-fáciles de aluminio de bebidas gaseosas y otras, entretejidas con retazos de tela, convirtiéndolos en bellos collares, pulseras, aretes y fajas.
