It’s fun to visit G. Willikers, no matter your age! You’ll enjoy shopping for toys that girls and boys will really use — from baby’s first teething ring to board games the whole family spends hours playing — and all kinds of gifts. Meghan Bazaar’s mom, Linda Ambrosino, began G. Willikers in Saratoga Springs and the Albany area 26 years ago, so making kids happy is definitely in the genes. “We’re an old-fashioned store in the best sense of the word,” says Meghan. “Our products focus on imaginary play and art, fostering education as well as imagination.” G. Willikers stocks well-made toys, puzzles and games from around the world — items kids won’t play with once and toss aside. “There’s a strong organic and ecofriendly bent here, too. That means a lot to us as well,” Meghan says. Customer service is top-drawer, with knowledgeable, helpful staff — mostly parents and teachers in their other lives — who know just what children love! Gift-wrapping’s free of charge, a huge plus in these hectic days. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday to 4:30 p.m.

Tails have been wagging since Must Love Dogs opened in downtown Katonah in July 2011. Four-legged friends of all sizes and breeds can expect spa-like attention from master groomer and owner Jessica Riina. Two- to three-hour sessions involve bathing, drying and extensive grooming of hair, skin and nails. Biodegradable shampoos and natural perfumes, homemade by Jessica from essential oils, are sensitive to canine well-being. Every dog should be groomed for looks and good health. “Groomers really know their dogs’ bodies and can recognize fleas, ticks, growths and other signs of disease. ounded in the hamlet of Katonah in 1996 in a small 1,000-square-foot storefront on Katonah Avenue — Country Willow has grown to be one of the area’s largest independently owned furniture retail and design centers, with more than 35 employees and 35,000 square feet of spectacular home furnishings for every room in your home. Walking into Country Willow is nothing short of a one-of-a-kind experience. The interior is a magnificent post-and-beam construction with hand-planed wood floors, antique barn wood on the walls, soaring ceilings and filled with beautiful sofas, sectionals, leather seating, solid wood tables, desks, bedrooms and so much more. They are also the area’s largest resource for home décor including lighting, rugs, window treatments and accessories … and it’s all right here in Bedford Hills. From country to transitional and contemporary, they carry furniture styles for every homeowner. Their many collections of home furnishings and décor accommodate a wide range of price points from starter families to the more upscale homeowner. There are always lots of choices for everyone. You will also find Country Willow Kids & Baby at the same location, which displays more than 40 bedroom collections. This includes bunks, lofts, captain’s beds, trundles, desks, cribs, rugs, lighting … basically everything you will ever need to create a safe and beautiful room for all of your children.
Country Willow has been voted Best Furniture and Accessory Store 11 years in a row by Westchester magazine and recognized by Houzz for design and service. The owners, Cori and Roy Estrow, attribute their incredible success to their employees — some of whom have been with them since the early days. “We have been blessed with some of the most amazing, dedicated and caring employees that you can ever ask for,” says Cori Estrow. “Last year we converted our company to an ESOP company, also known as an employee-owned company. They all work very hard and deserve to share in our success.” Country Willow is also a leading resource for sustainable home furnishings, specializing in American-made, which is rare in this age of imports. They also specialize in solid-wood custom furniture, so if you need a trestle dining table made of reclaimed wood in a specific size or finish, or a large 14-foot library or corner home office, Country Willow can get it done and for less than you think. They also offer complimentary in-home design services by talented designers and have no commissioned salespeople, making for a very friendly environment. And don’t forget to stop by and visit Nyla — a golden retriever who is always there to welcome and entertain everyone. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Celebrating their 92nd anniversary, Bedford Stone & Masonry Supply, a fifthgeneration family-owned business, is one of the area’s largest operations — certainly the premier site for masonry and landscape materials. Clement Burbank started Bedford Stone & Masonry in 1925 as a manufacturing plant, but 47 years ago the family turned its focus to stone, masonry and landscape supplies. There’s an enormous selection of natural stone and brick suitable for walkways, patios, pool decks, walls and garden paths, plus mulch, cement, sand, drainage products, decorative gravel, and fireplace materials. See Bedford Stone’s expansive outdoor garden display with examples of various stone and brick use — a collage of walls, paths, patios, edging and steps. An indoor space across the street showcases the extensive uses of thin brick and thin, natural stone — perfect for beautifying concrete foundations, chimneys, fireplace surrounds and backsplashes. Lightweight, so no footings or foundations needed! Contractors and homeowners appreciate Bedford Stone’s neat, welcoming atmosphere and the family’s help and advice — as solid as the products they sell. Providing a warm, nurturing environment for young children, St. Matthew’s School is located on the bucolic 62-acre property of St. Matthew’s Church. The school offers morning programs for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds, emphasizing exploration and play while providing school-readiness skills. “Children can be children here and enjoy creative activities like dramatic play, cooking, building with blocks, finger painting, and engaging with unique sensory materials, all of which help them to develop in age-appropriate ways,” says director Stephanie Scanlon. “Children have opportunities to explore and create in ways they may not be able to once they move beyond preschool.” The school’s teacher-designed, literature-based curriculum is supplemented with weekly Spanish, music and yoga classes for the older students, as well as “God’s Garden” lessons focused on love, joy, peace and kindness. All classes take nature walks and enjoy time outside on the expansive, newly renovated playground, which includes a special section specifically for 2-year-olds. Each age group plants a garden box and harvests the fruits of their labor. Parents interested in learning more about St. Matthew’s School are invited to call for an appointment.

Where learning and play go hand in hand, the nonsectarian Pound Ridge Community Church Play School has been preparing preschoolers for kindergarten since 1963. In encouraging kindergarten readiness skills, there’s a combination of hands-on, teacher-directed learning and child-directed free play, striking the right balance for children ages 2 to 5 from Pound Ridge and surrounding communities. Director Kirstin Zarras cites the Play School’s “developmentally appropriate curriculum that’s an exciting and meaningful combination of learning and play. Children also enjoy music and movement, art and science, and lots of fun outdoor time on the Play School playground.” The Play School day runs from 8:45 a.m. to noon, with staggered arrivals and pickups. For families seeking longer days, the Play School collaborates on-site with the Bedford Learning Center, Tuesday through Friday, with enrichment activities focused on kindergarten readiness, literature, science and nature. A number of dedicated Play School teachers move into their Bedford Learning Center roles for the afternoons. The Play School, next to Pound Ridge Elementary School, is perfectly positioned for students’ seamless transition into kindergarten; our staff confers regularly with PRES teachers. Pound Ridge Pet Care’s Carmel Archambault, well-known for flexibility with dog boarding, is also available for quick home visits starting at $15 in Pound Ridge. Carmel may not have dogs of her own, but she’s still completely in love with them! Pound Ridge Pet Care invites pups of all ages, sizes and spots into Carmel’s air-conditioned home for day care, overnight or vacation — with flexible hours, unusual in the pet care world. “I have up to six dogs here in the house at any given time; they’re here while I’m cooking, watching TV and in my office,” says Carmel. “No leashes, kennels or cages, and the dogs sleep on my bed if they want to and go in the car for errands. Dogs are socialized and exercised here, and they’re relaxed here.” Pound Ridge Pet Care features two fenced-in yards, for separating dogs by size if needed. To ensure compatibility, Carmel asks owners to bring dogs in for a meet and greet before signing up. She’s fully insured, and dogs must be vaccinated. Calling her home “dog heaven on earth,” Carmel administers medications and even takes dogs to the vet or groomer. Call for an appointment.

Susan Westlake
Susan Westlake has been tutoring students for the English portion of the SAT and ACT for more than 12 years. With a degree in education from the University of Michigan, and experience teaching middle school, high school and college, she enjoys working one-on-one with her students. She says it is gratifying to know that the things she teaches — vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, and essay writing — are all things that add value not only for the SAT and the ACT, but for high school, college and life. In addition to tutoring, Susan practices law. She finds that her background as a corporate and trademark attorney, and her experience as an editor of the Law Review at the University of San Diego School of Law, enhance the value she adds to each student’s educational development. She says there is no one formula to prepping students for the college exams. “Some students come with an outstanding vocabulary, the ability to discern nuances in passages presented for analysis, a strong knowledge of grammar, and the ability to write cogently. Other students have a different starting point,” Susan says. For each, she partners with her students to help them hone their skills and maximize their potential on the exams. Hours: By appointment, in Goldens Bridge.

t has been said that a school is shaped by its leader. Nowhere is that more evident than at St. Luke’s School, a secular, independent day school in New Canaan for grades 5 through 12. Mark Davis has been head of school at St. Luke’s since 2002. When Davis speaks, words like kindness, leadership, confidence, and moral compass enter the conversation. He believes families are attracted to the St. Luke’s blend of traditional education with a forward-thinking environment. “Our job is to provide an exceptional education and prepare students for their futures,” Davis says. Davis’ enthusiasm peaks when discussing what he calls “deeper learning.” He notes an “exciting shift in education,” where students no longer passively receive information from a teacher, but actively participate. “They help create and drive their own learning,” Davis says. “They’re drawn in and remember the lessons. That’s the key; it’s learning that lasts.” Visitors to the campus may peer into a classroom and see students in the midst of mindfulness meditation. Davis, a practitioner of yoga and meditation, has brought a focus on wellbeing to the school. “High achievement can bring a degree of stress,” he says. Many teachers and students have felt the benefits of taking a few moments to breathe and reset. I jumped at a recent invitation to lead a fifth-grade class in morning meditation. I believe we’re giving these children tools for focus and calm they’ll use their whole lives.” Hours: Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Robert J. Bernstein, director of Autism Speech
Rob’s new book, “Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normalcy to Treat Autism,” with the foreword by Temple Grandin, is a great resource for parents with a child on the autism spectrum. Here’s what people are saying: “Bernstein’s methodology, developed after years of experience in the present educational system, demonstrates a revolutionary cognitive approach to autism that departs from current practice. It is a must read for all parents and professionals dealing with children with autism.” — Douglas P. Hudson, MD, MPH “Without exception, Rob Bernstein’s work with these patients has markedly improved their ability to function effectively with others. He has a unique ability to engage with people, gently yet firmly coaxing them into the wider world, often for the first time. Once there, he guides them toward claiming their competence and channeling their untapped strengths. I stand behind Rob Bernstein’s techniques without reservation.” — Ram Kairam, MD, Pediatric Neurologist, Developmental Neurology Associates; Professor of Clinical Neurology, Columbia University Medical Center “Robert Bernstein is one of the smartest, most perceptive people I know. No matter where someone falls on the scale of ‘normal,’ Bernstein finds a way to connect.” — Will Shortz, The New York Times’s crossword editor The book is available on Amazon.com.

hat’s in a name? When it comes to real estate and the magnitude of the decision-making involved, a name means a lot. For instance, do you know that Real Living Real Estate was named “Real Estate Agency Brand of the Year,” with a 97 percent satisfaction rating for an unprecedented two years in a row — 2016 and 2017? And do you know that Real Living was named the “Most Trusted” real estate brand in the 29th annual Harris Poll EquiTrend® study? And do you know that Real Living is the luxury brand of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway family of affiliated companies — the Omaha genius behind the world’s most successful investments? So, yes, when it comes to real estate, a name means a lot. Whether you are buying or selling and looking for the best company to represent your interests, the name to look for is Five Corners Properties/Real Living. Five Corners Properties is the locally owned boutique agency for discerning buyers and sellers, and the only area agency for international MLS listings, which provides access to many more prospects seeking the sophisticated properties that characterize the Scarsdale market. Let’s say you want to buy a home in Scarsdale. You want agents who live locally and who understand the various assets of each Scarsdale neighborhood. You want
agents who know about the schools, how to commute to work, and how long it’s likely to take. You’ll want to know about shopping and delivery services, and the athletic and recreational opportunities here, as well as the social life. With their stellar training, Five Corners Properties’ trusted advisers can show you how to compare one house to another and, most importantly, how to narrow the choices so that you will enjoy living in your new home for years to come. Suppose you want to sell a property. A Five Corners Properties QHA (Qualified Home Assessment) will help you set the appropriate price to make your home attractive to buyers — too high, and you’re priced out of the market; too low, and it raises suspicions about something amiss. With our tips, your home will have good curb appeal, inviting buyers to want to look inside. And with our marketing expertise and online resources, your property will be positioned for a quicker sale and a higher price than you might expect. Put your real estate needs in the hands of Five Corners Properties. Gain access to international buyers, Connecticut buyers and sellers at our sister location (across from Whole Foods in Greenwich), and those in our 4,000 network offices. We are experienced, committed to your goals, and trained to unravel the many steps to buy and sell real estate. Working with us is always a pleasure. Hours: Open seven days a week.

Smart shoppers who have discovered Mixology, the 8-year-old emporium for comfortable, casual and occasion dressing in the Village Center, are learning the practical and aesthetic benefits of mix and match — hence, mixology. Here, moms and their daughters can successfully pair, say, a luxurious cashmere sweater with an equally gorgeous but more economical skirt or trouser. The result: a smashing ensemble that mixes outfits with price points that won’t break the bank. Store owner Gabrielle Edwards is the enthusiastic spokesperson for the sartorial art form, recounting how her after-school job at a shop on Long Island sold her on the brand’s mission — to which she is totally committed in her own place. What’s there to discover at Mixology? Jac Parker casuals, denim by Hidden and Flying Monkey, pleather skirts by Brooklyn Karma, cashmere by Decker and Wyse, Jocelyn fur accessories, and lots more. At Mixology and the newly opened outlet next door, you can develop the confidence to become the best version of yourself. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday to 8 p.m., Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

hoe-Inn, the largest independent women’s footwear retailer in the tristate area, with nine locations, has been owned and operated by the Lawson family for 45 years. Melissa and Billy Lawson, now joined by their son, Peter, continue to bring Westchester residents the hot trends and classic styling in footwear. No store in all of Westchester or Connecticut gives you the selection you’ll find at ShoeInn — designers like Stuart Weitzman, Vince, Crime London, Botkier, Aquatalia, Fioretini and Baker, and so many more. Plus, the five Italian factories we work with — exclusively in the U.S. — give you an unparalleled selection from day to evening, dress to sport, flat to high. This season, booties, velvet, combat boots and fashion sneakers are trending, and that’s just the beginning of what you’ll find. How about our unbelievable weatherproof selection, including Sorel, Ugg, Blondo, Valdini, etc. etc. And for the young at heart, there’s Steve Madden, Jeffrey Campbell, and all their friends. Last year, we reopened our store at the Golden Horseshoe in Scarsdale to rave reviews. If you’re Connecticut bound, visit our newest location at 36 Elm St. in New Canaan. Other locations are in Westport (CT), Rye Brook, East Hampton, and Westhampton Beach (NY), and Livingston, Ridgewood and Englewood (NJ). Be sure to say hello to our Betty, 37 years and still the go-to authority on what to wear and what fits. Where would we be without her? Hours: Open seven days a week. Upon entering Designer’s Corner, you are surrounded by lovely, quality antique and vintage furniture, mirrors, artwork, lighting and accessories. We are the tristate area’s leading source of fully restored vintage chandeliers, sconces and lamps. She’s completed hundreds of projects — primarily residential, but also executive offices, shops and restaurants — and has a great deal of experience with construction. Judy is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and is NCIDQ certified. Neal Hibbert, shop manager, is our lighting and restoration expert. With more than 40 years of design experience and a huge inventory of everything to furnish a home or model apartment, Designer’s Corner is the obvious choice. Whether moving in or staging a space, consider the advantages of a quick, professional solution to your needs. Speak to Judy, Neal or our other excellent staff members, who are happy to brainstorm with you and determine how Designer’s Corner can help.
It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

Elvis, Marty Heiser, Vasyl and Pavel Shamar Watson, director of Mount Vernon After School Academy; Nina Ross, WJCS board member and Sarah Kayle, WJCS board member
Children in two Mount Vernon elementary schools are reaping the rewards of two enrichment programs in the After-School Academy, sponsored by Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), one of the county’s largest human services agencies. Activities in the “Amazing Afternoons” program at the Edward Williams Elementary School, for grades 1 to 6, and the “Off the Street” program at the Hamilton Elementary School, for grades 2 through 6, begin with a healthy snack for the approximately 120 students in each program. The fun continues with music, books, sports, STEM learning, occasional field trips, and even homework assistance to help the children excel. The storybook hour, co-chaired by volunteers Sarah Kayle, Nina Ross and Cynthia Samwick, is just one of the quality activities popular with kids and their parents. The joy of story improves literacy, encourages discussion, and exposes young people to the world beyond their classrooms and neighborhoods. Assisting with the programs are trained high school students from Mount Vernon and Scarsdale, Westchester Reform Temple volunteers, neighborhood moms, and former students. More volunteers are always needed. Office hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As wise homeowners know, regular maintenance is cost-effective. And one of the most important ways to maintain the integrity of your house, as well as its good looks, is with a quality paint job. Service Unlimited has been offering Old World craftsmanship to homeowners for more than a quarter of a century. The success of the company is all in the name: Service Unlimited. We are housepainters, but the application of paint is at the end of the job, not the beginning. First comes power-washing to create a clean surface, then scraping off cracked and flaking paint, followed by sanding rough areas. The next step is to apply fresh caulk around doors and windows to prevent moisture from rotting out wood frames. Other pre-paint services include reglazing windows, nailing down loose boards, filling in nail holes, applying a primer/sealer coat of paint, and only then the finishing coat. From Cape Cods to multistory mansions, Service Unlimited means superior customer service, including daily cleanup and exceptional workmanship. Just ask our customers. Office hours: Call anytime.
