Steele Center Hop Haus is open

The Citizen

Dubbed the Steele Center, 9 Steele Blvd., a new mixeduse property adjacent to the Berlin Train Station, is alive with activity.

Economic Development Director Chris Edge said the Steele Center "is shaping up to be a wonderful centerpiece" in that section of town.

On May 30, the Hop Haus restaurant opened at the Steele Center, joining Trio Home Care, Attorneys Brewer & Sargis and Eminence Lash & Aesthetics, LLC. The building also houses apartments.

Tony Valenti, of Newport Realty Group, and partner Mark Lovley, of Lovley Development, Inc., are the team behind the Steele Center.

TOUGH TEAM

“When we first opened, I told people that we were in the new development in Berlin,” Hop Haus owner Mike Miller said. “Now the people know we are near the train station.”

An "upbeat, casual craft eatery,” Hop Haus offers locally-sourced food, and beer and cocktails from the state’s “best brewers and distillers."

While the big guys of the PGA TOUR were in Cromwell for the Travelers Championship, down the road in Berlin, Timberlin Golf Course was getting ready to host a very talented – albeit much younger – field of its own. This week, Timberlin’s 13U PGA Jr. League teams played their first match of the season, and the dynamic duo of Lauren Lafollette and Max Bayram carded a 1under-par to finish first among the 24 teams in action. BOE: What’s next for our new graduates?

From the Berlin Board of Education.

The students from the Berlin High School Class of 2023 earned several honors this school year.

Of the 231 graduates, 24 earned an Academic Honors Citation. This means students earned high grades

in the most rigorous coursework offered at the high school in at least two core subject areas.

In addition, 126 graduates earned the President’s Award, which is presented to students who earn a cumulative grade point average of 90 or higher.

Also, an impressive number of graduates were members of distinguished honors societies, with 72 students inducted into the National Honor Society and 16 into the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society.

As a graduating class, our students will avail themselves to a wide-variety of impressive postgraduate opportunities. This includes 74.4% of students attending four-year colleges. Of these students, we are proud to announce that an impressive

number have been accepted into most prestigious and competitive colleges. These institutions include Cornell University, Northeastern University, Pomona College and Grinnell College. Furthermore, 12.5% of graduates made conscious decisions to take advantage of the free college tuition at local community colleges and begin their higher education studies with a debt-free return. In addition, 4.8% of students will pursue trades by attending Bristol Tech

and Lincoln Tech, while 7.4% of the grads will enter various fields of work.

And we are also very proud to share that two of our graduates will go on to serve their country by joining the United States Marine Corps.

Beyond the academic realm, a commendable number of students from the Berlin High Class of 2023 dedicated time to improve the climate and culture of their school and community, with 44 graduates earning a Community Service Citation. This is awarded when students dedicate more than 120 hours of community service during their high school career.

Their service and leadership is admirable and sets a noteworthy example for rising students at Berlin High School in the years to come.

With this, we are confident that the Class of 2023 is ready and prepared to achieve their future goals beyond Berlin High School with purpose, passion, and pride!

Hop Haus

“We have hired a bunch of people from the Berlin Public Schools, and they have been wonderful,” said Miller. “We got some really good kids working hard for us.”

Earlier in the year, Miller, a Meriden native, told The Citizen, “I used to work in Berlin for a number of years and spent a lot of time growing up in town. I spent much of my youth here, so I know it’s a good town and geographical location for the restaurant.”

Miller runs another Hop Haus restaurant in Southington.

Lukaszewski and the Goodwin Tech Class of 2023 graduated on June 19.

While she studied carpentry at Goodwin Tech, Lukaszewski now plans to pursue a degree in the medical field. She said seeing her late grandfather suffer with the effects of Parkin-

son’s disease pushed her in that direction. Lukaszewski described her grandfather as ”the most influential role model in my young life.”

“I saw him as my hero and as an individual that I wanted to be like one day,” she added.

Lukaszewski said, “My experience witnessing him suffer ultimately was the driving force in my passion for helping others.”

Because of her grandfather’s illness, Lukaszewski spent a great deal of time around healthcare workers, and witnessed the positive impact they had on her family. She said, “Through my desire to go into the medical field, I can positively use my experience to pay forward the warmth and comfort to my future patients.”
