CIAC lays out plan to play fall sports
Photos by Aaron Flaum, Record-Journal
With indoor theaters closed, drive-in movies have returned By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
With people looking for entertainment during the pandemic, drive-ins have come back in style. In Berlin, The Picture Show Drive-In Experience has been running for nine weeks and has been popular. It is held in the parking lot of the closed indoor movie theater at 19 Frontage Road. “With a parking lot capacity of 50 cars, we have seen a
fantastic mix of sell-outs or 80 percent plus of capacity for the vast majority of our screenings,” said Bria Naylor, marketing manager at Picture Show Entertainment. “In order to stay connected with our guests and show movies that are desirable to our audience, we regularly reach out for recommendations via the theater's Facebook page. Guests have been extremely pleased when their suggestions are used in the film lineup. The wide variety of movies
shown has brought in many different movie lovers to see films such as the Indiana Jones series, cult classics such as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ” and “The Neverending Story” and newer blockbuster hits like “Wonder Woman”, “The LEGO Movie” and “Trolls.” Movies run Friday through Sunday at $8 per adult or $5 per child and seniors. There is also a discount night each Tuesday at $4 per person. See Drive-in, A12
29. Remaining sports will have an extra day.
On Friday at noon, the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference put out a new plan for fall sports. The packet provided a new timeline for athletes and coaches to compete and safely deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
If post-season tournaments can be run safely, contests will run from Oct. 31 through Nov. 15. There will be no football played on Thanksgiving this year.
The season will have a three-week conditioning period, starting with athletes coming together in cohorts of 15 on Aug. 27. With full teams and contact, the first scrimmages can begin on Sept. 11 and then all programs can start regular-season action on Sept. 24. Cross country, field hockey, soccer, girls’ swimming and diving, and volleyball squads will be allowed to play 12 regular-season games, while football teams are being limited to six. Football programs can play once a week, while the other sports will be allowed to compete twice. Cross country teams are asked to end their regularseason schedule by Oct.
All schools are asked to come up with a regional schedule between just CIAC programs. Regional play was chosen to limit and mitigate the possible spread of the coronavirus. There will be no out-ofstate games. The CIAC also wants schools to come up with a COVID-19 Advisory Committee to address health and safety issues. At practices and games, coaches and athletes are being advised to self screen themselves for signs of an illness. For fan attendance, the CIAC is giving school districts the opportunity to make a plan for their venues and follow the guidance from the state of Connecticut.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded after a tanker truck rolled over, spilling an estimated 8,600 gallons of gasoline. No serious injuries were reported. Frontage Road was closed after the truck rolled over near the Route 9 north onramp around 5 p.m. Friday. First responders from Berlin, including police and firefighters, also responded along with DEEP’s emergency response unit. Letters to the Editor A bad bill

legislation is the “police accountability” legislation (HB6004). At its core is the ending of qualified immunity for police officers. I believe this is bad for our communities. If passed, how safe will you actually be if police response times increase? While HB6004 does contain some positive components, such as establishing police department accreditation standards and applies Freedom of Information provisions to union contracts and arbitration awards, the negative take-aways are far more numerous. There are funding problems. Who pays for all the new
mandated accreditation costs and increased costs for health evaluations and drug testing? What about the reimbursement for must-have camera equipment and data storage? And there’s vague language in the bill. What exactly is “… conduct that undermines public confidence.” It’s also unclear just how an officer is to intervene if witnessing excessive force. Not surprising, this bill was rammed through without a normal hearing process. No proper notice requirements. No thorough scrutiny. Committee leadership severely limited time allotted for dis-
cussion and questions. Besides the obvious difficulty municipalities will face recruiting and keeping officers, this bill doesn’t give the Police Accountability Taskforce the opportunity to review the issues with this bill. Why no proper review? Lastly, there are questions about the constitutionality of the new Inspector General position. Our state constitution vests investigation and prosecution of criminal cases with the Division of Criminal Justice, the Chief State’s Attorney and the individual State’s Attorney offices. Letters From A6
Veach is my choice Editor : On May 19, the Republican Party held its convention to select a candidate for the House of Representatives, District 30, in which I was a delegate. Berlin town councilor Donna Veach won the endorsement of the Republican Party. However, the other nominee, Pastor Jim Townsley, filed to primary against Veach. As a delegate, I could not support Pastor Townsley due to some very troublesome information discovered when doing a Google search of him. The search revealed articles that had to do with abuse by a youth pastor in his baptist church.
Thursday, August 6, 2020
I fully support Donna Veach and feel she is the best person to represent Berlin and Southington as our State Representative. She has strong conservative principles, has experience in local government as a Town Councilor and understands the needs and issues facing Berlin and Southington. Donna has been an effective leader in business and in the community, and is committed to working hard for all citizens. Please vote for Donna Veach for State Representative, District 30, in the Tuesday, Aug. 11 primary election.

In my opinion, the Pastor’s actions, and lack thereof, demonstrated poor judgement, poor leadership, and was grossly irresponsible.

Bowling alleys try to rebound from coronavirus shutdown
In Plainville, Lessard Lanes has made adjustments to make bowlers feel safe. Owner Marcel Lessard started with a soft opening plan June 17, the first day of Phase II. The soft opening was just for league bowlers. All other bowlers were welcomed back on July 1. “It’s been slow,” Lessard said. “Bowling in general is down. But that allows us time to prepare for leagues in the fall. All of our camps, fundraiser's and anything with large groups has been canceled because of the pandemic.”
“Bowling is tremendously different than it used to be,” Lessard said. “We have half the people. There are no high-fives, no blaring music and the competition is down in the leagues.” Masks are mandatory and can only be lowered to take a drink or eat. The temperature of bowlers is taken when they come through the door. For “open bowling” people are urged to register online at lessardlanes.com. “We took steps to make this as safe an environment as possible,” Lessard said. “We have sophisticated thermometers. There’s only one way in. We have barriers be-

Lessard also invested in cold plasma generator technology for better air quality in the building. There are special hours for seniors — 10 a.m to noon, Tuesday to Friday. Lessard said the sessions have been well attended. “We’ve done everything that could be done and beyond to assure (the bowler’s) safety,” Lessard said. “We understand that people don’t want to go anywhere inside no matter what. It’s a decision they have to make. But if they want to have some fun. We are here.”

Bowling is one of the recreational activities allowed under Phase II of Connecticut’s reopening plan. Most area alleys have opened back up and a few are close to opening.
Leagues have been the mainstay at Lessard since reopening. The league reaches full capacity of 50 bowlers each of the three “League Nights” per week.

But due to COVID-19, most local news publications are losing money, fast. Advertising has plummeted during the crisis and readers aren’t subscribing fast enough to fill the void. This has led to thousands of local reporters being laid off. Just as our society faces numerous, urgent challenges. Millions of people are in danger of losing access to the authoritative local

CATS OF THE WEEK From left: Onyx is a little angel. She is 10 weeks old. Once a scared little kitten, now she loves to be held and is a little love. Tootles is a stunning, sixmonth-old Maine Coon mix. She is a little devil; so spunky and bratty. She is so playful that she needs a home with another playful cat.
