Main St.’s Cafe Busy Bean becomes community hub By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Remembering a tennis coach and math teacher known for caring more about his students than his lessons, dozens of educators, coaches, former tennis players and students gathered outside the Berlin High School tennis courts Thursday, Aug. 8 for the facility’s official dedication as the Rex Smith Memorial Tennis Courts.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to who has been to your establishment here has loved it,” Mayor Mark Kaczynski told Tigran Hovhannisyan, owner of the Main Street cafe. Kaczynski was joined by Interim Town Manager Arosha Jayawickrema and Hovhannisyan’s daughter, Ani, in holding the ribbon up as Hovhannisyan wielded the oversized scissors.

Since last year’s launch, Hovhannisyan has expanded his menu to include nitro cold brew coffee, parfaits, salads and bagels, sourced from Bagel Plus in Plainville, and is currently looking at new lunch options. He’s also

Celebrating a business that has become a second home for some residents, town officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Cafe Busy Bean Monday morning.

Economic Development Director Chris Edge said the cafe “has been the biggest, hottest thing in Berlin,” since its soft opening on Nov. 4, 2018.

He said it was important to Smith that people know the courts are there for all to use and he encouraged people to play on them – and a few did after the ceremony. Smith, who taught and coached at BHS since 1980, died Nov. 7, 2018 after a brief illness, said

"These courts behind me are a lasting image of the work he put in, as it was he, along with the help of Scott Trevethan and Parks and Rec, who brought this beautiful complex to life.” Smith wasn’t just known as being a coach who won countless conference titles through his unique ability to transform athletes into tennis players quickly, Mauri said, he also brought his talents across See Smith, A17

FROM THE BERLIN LAND TRUST

Use a lawyer for Medicaid planning

An ambitious project Benjamin Franklin once said, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” His words have inspired many to take a risk to achieve something meaningful and worthwhile. That’s just what the volunteers at the Berlin Land Trust are doing. In November, they signed an agreement to purchase 47 acres of pristine land on Lamentation Mountain. The property is embedded deep within open space that has, in large part, already been protected. Its purchase would be the culmination of a long-term, co-operative program of open space protection, which began about 50 years ago.

The cliff line, described by the Connecticut Forest and Park Association as "perhaps the most scenic traprock ridge walk in the state," is a prominent feature, visible for miles. “This piece of property has it all; critical habitats for raptors, box turtles and other wildlife, a rare and statethreatened Swamp Cottonwood grove, vernal pools

and cliffs and ridgelines that offer sweeping views of central Connecticut,” said Sigrun Gadwa, an ecologist from Carya Ecological Services. Ms. Gadwa performed a detailed ecological assessment that gave the land trust the information it needed to submit an impressive open space grant application to See Land trust, A7

• No conflict of interest. When nursing homes refer families to non-lawyers to assist in preparing the Medicaid application, the preparer has dual loyalties, to the facility that provides the referrals and to the client applying for benefits. To the extent everyone wants the Medicaid application to be successful, there’s no conflict of interest. But it’s in the nursing home’s interest that the resident pay privately for as long as possible before going on Medicaid, while it’s in the resident’s interest to protect assets for care or for the resident’s spouse or family.

• Saving money. Nursing homes can cost as much as $15,000 a month in some areas, so it is unusual for legal fees to equal the cost of even one month in the facility. It’s not difficult to save this much in long-term care and probate costs, and most attorneys will consult with new clients at little or no cost to determine what might be achieved before the client pays a larger fee. • Knowledge and experience. Professionals who work in any field on a daily basis over many years develop the experience and expertise to advise clients on how to achieve their goals, whether those are maintaining independence and dignity, preserving funds for children and grandchildren, or staying home rather than moving to assisted living or a nursing home. Less experienced advisers, however well intentioned, can’t know what they don’t know. • Peace of mind. It’s possible that an elder law attorney you consult with will advise you that there’s not much you can do to preserve assets or achieve Medicaid eligibility more quickly, but the consultation will provide peace of mind that you haven’t missed an opportunity. Medicaid rules provide multiple opportunities for nursing home residents to preserve assets for themselves and their spouses, children and grandchildren, especially those with special needs. There are more opportunities for those who plan ahead, but even at the last minute there are almost always steps available to preserve some assets. Talk to an attorney in our office to find out your options.

However you decide to provide for a child with special needs, proper planning is essential. We are hear to assist you with planning a comprehensive estate plan. Instead of proceeding based on what you’ve heard from others, doing nothing, or enlisting a non-lawyer referred by a nursing home, you can hire an elder law attorney. Here are a few reasons you should at least consider this option:

Many seniors and their families don’t use a lawyer to plan for longterm care or Medicaid, often because they’re afraid of the cost. However, an attorney can help you save money in the long run and make sure you’re getting the best care for your loved one.

An attorney hired to assist with Medicaid planning and the application has a duty of loyalty only to the client and will do his or her best to achieve the client’s goals.

It is one of the final pieces of the puzzle needed to protect the entire Lamentation Mountain ecosystem. “We know that if we want to continue to grow and thrive, we had to get out of our comfort zone and try something new. This project is definitely more ambitious than anything we have done before, but we put a great team together and it is going to happen,” said Berlin Land Trust President Dennis Kern.

FOUNDATIONS UNITE Liberty Bank Foundation is partnering with the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain (CFGNB) in a program designed to build the capacity of nonprofits in the foundation’s service area of Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. A $3,500 grant from Liberty will underwrite a subscription to the Foundation Center database, an online resource that provides information on thousands of foundations, corporate giving programs and other philanthropic funders. It enables nonprofits to search for funding sources whose interests align with a nonprofit’s focal areas in terms of program type, geography and target population. After the Diocese of Peoria initiated the cause for Sheen's canonization, a controversy arose. Some argued that Sheen left instructions that his body should be interred in New York. A niece, Joan Sheen Cunningham, went to court to have him moved to Peoria. The Vatican apparently indicated that the cause for his canonization would not go forward until the issue was resolved. The Archdiocese of New York lost its final appeal, and this past June 27, without prior public notice and without ceremony, Sheen's remains were transferred to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria, where his tomb may be visited. The remains are encased in a marble monument at the side altar

Beautification, the next step before his canonization, required a miracle credited to Sheen. A Vatican panel attributed the miraculous healing of a baby to his intercession. In 2010 Bonnie Engstrom and her husband, Travis, decided to name their third child, if a son, James Fulton after Sheen. They were devoted viewers of encore presentations of "Life is Worth Living" which continues to be telecast on EWTN and other channels. James Fulton was stillborn, his life threatened by a knot in the umbilical cord. For the first 61 minutes after his birth the baby did not breath. The mother called on Sheen, "repeating his name in my head over and over, and invoking him to pray for us." As James Fulton was about to be declared 1270581

While Archbishop Sheen is much admired, he also has been controversial. He was very conservative in his theological and political views, warning against what he called the "False Church....worldly, ecumenical and globalist." He wrote: "We are living in the day of the Apocalypse, the last days of our era....The two great forces of the Mystical Body of Christ and the Mystical Body of Anti-Christ are beginning to draw up the battle lines for the catastrophic contest." He listed twelve tricks by which the devil will deceive many of the faithful. The Anti-Christ will come as a "Great Humanitarian" talking "peace, prosperity and plenty." Sheen had prophesied a war between the Soviet Union and the United States and its allies. There also were reports of growing hostility between Archbishop Sheen and Cardinal Francis Spellman.

Sheen was in great demand as a speaker, but Spellman didn't want him to visit any churches in the Archdiocese of New York. Several reasons have been suggested for the antagonism. "Ecclesiastical rivalry" is one. Did Spellman feel resentful, even jealous? Clergy, we know, are human with human weaknesses. We've seen a lot of that in recent years. The last assignment of Archbishop Sheen was to head the much smaller Diocese of Rochester, N. Y. Joan Sheen Cunningham, his niece, wrote that sending her uncle to Rochester caused him a painful "heartache.” This focus on saints still can lead to confusion. When a miracle is attributed to a saint, did that saint have the power and authority to perform the miracle, or was it the saints’ intercession with God that led to the miracle? Then this question. Must the faithful believe all the mira-

Berlin hosts Tribute to Veterans Concert By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

In their first concert of their summer series, the Three Second Rush Concert Band, a contingent of the 102nd Army Band, brought a wide array of tunes to the Tribute to Veterans Concert last month at the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park. Sergeant Nina Madison said she hopes the band forms just such a connection be-
