Horton has practiced law in Hartford since 1970 and is well-known for handling appeals before the Connecticut appellate courts, including the state’s Supreme Court. These have included appeals involving major state constitutional issues. Perhaps the best-known is Sheff v. O’Neil, which concerned the de facto segregation of students.

Ride
Plainville resident Axel Sundberg, 10, left, rides a hot air balloon with pilot Bruce Buiberg, friend Ellie Keithan, 9, and her mother Rosie Keithan, and his grandmother Melanie Ouellette, during the first night of this year's annual Plainville Fire Company Hot Air Balloon Festival.
From A1
“He’s just starting to do things like this and this is a big thing for him because he’s not responding too well to the treatments so it’s only a matter of time before nothing works anymore,” said Ouellette, Sundberg’s primary caretaker. “So these are just very meaningful moments,” she said. Even though his family has lived just a just a few blocks from the park his whole life, it was Sundberg’s first ride in a balloon. “He was terrified, absolutely terrified at first … but once he got up there he liked it,” Ouellette said. Ouellette joined Sundberg in
a tethered ride in the RE/ MAX balloon Friday night, along with two family friends. A friend had won the free ride and offered it to the family. Balloon pilot Bruce Buiberg and his crew did the ride
special for Sundberg and his group. It was up to Sundberg to decide how long to stay floating a few hundred feet in the air, overlooking the crowded park and other giant hot air balloons nearby. “We stayed up for about 10
minutes. He was loving it,” said Buiberg. Buiberg said the RE/MAX balloon usually only does rides for corporate employees or charitable endeavors, like auction winners, but he’s made a point to bring
the balloon to the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for the last 15 years. The camp provides a fun, safe place for kids with serious illness to spend time free of cost to the family. bwright@record-journal.com

Local man charged with assault in domestic incident PLAINVILLE — A local man faces charges after police said he assaulted a woman and drove off with four young children. Malachi Ford, 21, of 95 Broad St., was charged Sunday with risk of injury to a minor, second-degree strangulation, second-degree unlawful restraint, third-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance, disorderly conduct, third-degree robbery and operating under suspension. His bond was set at $75,000. Police received 911 calls reporting a domestic incident at about 4:15 p.m. One caller, identified as Ford’s mother, followed her son’s vehicle and provided police
his location, according to a police report. Ford drove over a marked median, made unsafe lane changes and Ford sharp turns before being stopped by police. The woman involved in the dispute told police it started after Ford took $100 from her bank account, the report said. The woman said Ford assaulted her, choked her, demanded more money and then drove off with the children.

Festival From A1
“People have a fascination with hot air balloons. Kids love them. Moms and dads love them,” Lenois said. “We wanted a fun thing to do. This started out as a little carnival type festival where you’d probably get 2,000 people in there.”

behind the scenes. But we receive tremendous support from the town,” he said. “We don’t ask for help hardly at all, but when we do people seem to want to help us because that’s what we do for a living. That’s the pleasure of doing all this, giving a little bit back.”
Stephen Fisher, a resident of Enfield, said he “loved seeing the balloons.” The festival is the fire company’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The fire company hosts 150 vendors, according to Lenois, and includes everything from commercial vendors, to food and crafts. Lenois said that they will start planning for next year’s festival in September or October.

Though he doesn’t like to share how much money is raised every year, Lenois said that “about 60 percent of the money we raise goes back out to the community.” “We give $7,000-$8,000 a year away in scholarships. We sponsor just about every youth sports team in town, we sponsor the high school sports teams. We make donations to the food pantry,” he said. “We spread the benevolence around because that’s what you’re supposed to do.” Deb Hardy, a Plainville resident, said that she appreciates the festival for being “family oriented.”
“To see people come in and enjoy themselves is my favorite part,” said Lenois. “Seeing the families come in … cause we try to have something for everybody. That’s what I enjoy the most.”
“There’s a lot that goes on

With over 100 vendors, hot air balloons, a car show, live music and the festival taking place in the center of Norton Park, there is certainly something for everyone.
