Rolls Community Focus, Services into Local Branches service standards, such as: safety and security, accuracy, responsiveness and friendly, personalized service. These standards go into every transaction we do and come to focus with every customer we serve. We are unique because we are small enough to offer topnotch service to our customers, yet large enough that we are still a near-$900 million organization, with 15 offices in a diverse market area. We bring you a wide range of services to the point that you can get everything you need right here – and meet face to face with the people who make decisions. “We try to do everything we can to meet the needs of our customers,” he said. “The most important thing is that we are approachable. If you have a question, we can always get you in touch with someone who can give you a response.” Although we all read about how hard it is these days for businesses to get funding, Naugatuck Savings Bank has actually been doing a lot more small business funding and conventional funding of small business loans. Dollars are available and we’re here to make loans to qualified borrowers. The market has not dried up. We’re here and ready to help our customers who seek our lending services. As we grow to best serve the community, Naugatuck Savings Bank is working toward moving the Hanover Street office to a more convenient location, with an upgraded facility on West Main Street. Being a community bank means that “community” comes first. At Naugatuck

Savings Bank, we’re proud to support the local people and places that enrich all our lives. Since 1870, Naugatuck Savings Bank has been contributing to the betterment of the communities we serve by supporting the economic well being and quality of life that helps enrich all of our lives. We actively encourage our employees to volunteer their time and make a difference to help local community and nonprofit organizations. We’re proud to help those in need and to make our community a great place to live and work. In the past year we are proud to have established a Community Awards Program, where we let customers vote for local organizations to receive a total of $50,000 in grants through our charitable foundation. In addition, our Foundation awards close to 100 grants each year, totaling about $450,000 to 501(C)3 organizations. Naugatuck Savings Bank is an independent communitybased bank that continues to provide beneficial and effective consumer and business products and services you need to achieve your financial goals. Our tag line is “Experience the Difference”. But, it’s more than that. It’s our commitment to provide friendly and personalized service to every customer, every day. At Naugatuck Savings Bank, our focus is on community. Whether it’s with a friendly smile and familiar service at the teller window, or getting your loan needs met with a small business or residential loan, we’re here for you! The bank operates from locations at 100 Hanover St. and 1295 East Main St. in Meriden. We are always improving our product offerings and ways to best meet customer needs. One area that was recently added is a Small Business Desk with a dedicated loan officer and dedicated underwriting. The desk has helped us expand our service to small businesses and our presence in the Meriden area as we grow our commercial lending, reduce loan turnaround time and better meet your needs all around. “With the merger of Castle Bank, we are very conscious of trying to keep our efforts going in the direction of better serving the people and the businesses in our community,” said Mark Yanarella, President and CEO of Naugatuck Savings Bank. One area of growth now is expansion of our business lending and business products to the Meriden area. This year should be a good time to move forward as a bank – as we are seeing more stability in the overall markets. This is evident in the housing markets as well, he said. “This year appears to be a better year than in 2009, and we hope that continues.” Naugatuck Savings Bank works hard everyday to make a difference. Comfort and Care of Wallingford

Celebrates Seven Years Of Quality, Consistant Services to the Older Adult throughout Connecticut Phyllis Ollison has been with Comfort and Care as long as the professional caregiving company has been open. Her job is to help Louisa DeLauro with daily tasks, from getting dressed and driving to appointments to attending events and much more. But, for Ollison, it doesn’t feel like a job. “I think of her like she’s my second mom. I’ve gotten very close with her,” Ollison says. “I care for her the way I would my mom – it’s a wonderful bond.” That same kind of bond is common among clients and their caregivers from Comfort and Care of Wallingford, LLC. The company, based at 273 North Main St., specializes in helping so that your aging loved one can manage more easily while living independently. Comfort and Care of Wallingford, LLC helps by providing caregivers to offer the best kindness, caring and compassion that you want for your family. Comfort and Care of Wallingford is proud to celebrate its seventh anniversary this spring (May 1). Several things have been constant hallmarks of the business, says owner Linda Durning, who started the company in the summer of 2003 after gaining a great deal of experience in the field – but wanting to offer more to clients. The

ating Celebr er Ov s r 20 Yeagford! llin In Wa

company has seen steady growth – even in down economic times. The company continues to offer personalized touchs, more one-on-one communication and go the extra mile to provide the best care for people. Her first office was just one room and had just two desks. But she and her staff were on their way to offering professional home care services to enable older adults to continue to live independently, to improve their quality of

life, and relieve stress for them and their family members. “It’s been small steps, but I feel fortunate to be a business owner and have the dedicated staff that I do,” she said. “The dedicated men and women who take care of our clients – they do their work from the heart. They really get attached to the people they interact with. They do their work with dedication and passion, and that’s hard to come by.” The company’s priorities are also personal priorities: A

focus on kindness, caring and compassion – and helping others with passion and dedication. “That’s what our entire business model is built on,” she said. “I still have caregivers with me from the day I opened. I have quite a few. We go outside the box, thinking creatively of ways to help our clients. We feel attachment inside with our clients – it’s a real bond.” The service we offer is really about family – ours and yours.

“The help and support of my husband every day is what makes everything worth while,” says Linda Durning. “We are a business that focuses on family first and foremost – and we treat our clients the same way. Not only do we work with clients – but, we work with their families.” Comfort and Care is a non-medical agency that helps people who are elderly by providing them companionship and personal care, with a full range of custom services from live-in arrangements to transportation to doctor appointments to home-making services to senior center visits and more. “We can provide you with transportation to medical appointments, to shopping, to events or just around town to the library and other errands,” she said. Our caregivers actually stay with each client and accompany them wherever they need to go. We base all our services on what the client needs, from in-home services to appointments and shopping trips, we cover everything all the way to unloading the car and putting groceries away. The company saw some internal structure changes over the past year, but managed to avoid rate increases for this year. There is just a two-hour minimum as compared to other companies that require a four-hour minimum. Many clients simply need help getting to doctor appointments and back. But, Comfort and Care also specializes in providing more heavy-duty work,

such as assisting with moving people. “We continue to find ways to offer a better value to our clients – offering more for less,” she said. “We want to be sure the older adult is not shortchanged in services because of finances. We are always here to help them – 24/7!” Whether your loved one wants regular outings with a companion taking them from place to place, or just socialization and help with daily tasks, Comfort and Care is a great way for family members to relieve stress, share the responsibilities and achieve peace of mind. All caregivers are fully screened, bonded, provided with workers compensation and liability insurance. Comfort and Care of Wallingford takes pride in actively supporting the community. The company has received numerous awards for demonstrating excellence in business and involvement in the community. Durning is proud to support the Alzheimer’s Association of Connecticut. She is also on the Heritage Registry of Who’s Who members for the New York and Cambridge, Mass. editions. The company belongs to three chambers of commerce as well as the National Private Duty Association. Suzio York Hill

Working for the Future – Products a Part of Positive Development

Suzio York Hill, mixers waiting to be loaded with concrete out of the companyís New Haven plant for one of the many construction projects taking place in the area. Suzio York Hill is located at 975 Westfield Road in Meriden. Even in some of the toughest economic times, one of the largest cities in the state is moving forward – and one local firm is doing its part to help out. The Meriden-based L. Suzio York Hill Companies Inc. may have started out 112 years ago in a time of simpler construction practices, but today the firm is applying much more sophisticated materials in its work on several high-end development projects in the city of New Haven. “Just a half hour south of Meriden there is a lot of construction taking place. When it all comes to fruition, people are going to be talking about what they see,” says 4th generation family member and salesman Matthew Munson. Suzio York Hill is proud to be a part of a high rise construction project at 360 State St., in downtown New Haven that will house 500 residential units upon its completion. The new 32-story high rise is being recognized as the greenest large scale residential building in the state. Suzio York Hill is at the forefront of green technology in construction materials, providing energy saving and environmentally conscious products in some of its large jobs that are underway in the area. Concrete technology has come a long way over the years. Today Suzio products are used in everything from foundations and site development to bridge decks and large scale commercial buildings. Other noteworthy projects Suzio is excited to be a part of include Gateway Community College work that commenced in February – as well as the new Quinnipiac Bridge construction/preparation for the reconfiguration of the 91/95/34 inter-

change. The company also supplied concrete to Quinnipiac University’s expansion in Hamden which was coincidently named the York Hill Campus and includes a new dinning hall, parking garage and student center. Suzio York Hill is proud to be providing materials for these major projects that will propel the areas infrastructure into the next decade. “When the high rise building opens up, people will be talking about it as it is one of the most unique in the state,” Munson said. “When the new Q-Bridge is complete in a few years it will be one of only two in the country. It’s really going to be a great addition to the skyline as well as improving traffic conditions in the area. New Haven may be a smaller city, but it’s growing in popularity and it certainly offers a great deal of cultural enhancements to the state, including colleges, museums, shopping, art, entertainment and more. Silver City Sports Bar & Grill

Hits a Home Run! On January 25th, 2010 there was a quiet click to the lock of the doors that had been Yogi’s Restaurant at the Four Points by Sheraton Meriden. Construction workers entered, and 14 days later emerged the Silver City Sports Bar and Grill; the pride of The Four Points by Sheraton Meriden. A fun new gathering place that has a great feel and a fantastic menu that can please just about everyone! The concept began when in October, StepStone Hospitality, the new management company for the Four Points realized that the existing restaurant operation was not something they could be proud of. Plans began immediately. What did Stepstone want to see for the Four Points? A menu that would please the corporate traveler along with the families that come to stay; something that could stand up on it’s own, as a free-standing restaurant and be the perfect place for friends to gather after work for Happy Hour or before and after a special event, or to catch a game of your favorite sports team; the perfect convenient place to meet for any reason! Along with that, they knew that attentive, friendly service would be one of the keys to the new restaurant’s success. After many meetings and discussions with many of the industries foremost restaurateurs, a concept was born. They wanted the perfect SPORTS BAR! Construction crews were able to build a new private dining area, for quieter dining if desired, and they added a clever “arc shaped” bar top which seats double what the former bar seated which allows great conversation around the bar. Additional changes includes the addition of 10 more plasma TV’s.

It was important to StepStone that they convey the message to the residents of Meriden, that StepStone and The Four Points are committed to being a long standing part of this community; and after researching and understanding the history of Meriden, the name was obvious to everyone involved – The Silver City Sports Bar and Grill. One of the first tasks at hand was to find the right Chef to lead the charge in creating a fun and exciting new menu. Someone who was committed to excellence and someone who likes to keep things fresh, updated, interesting and exciting. This search led to bringing Executive Chef Charlie Marczewski onto the team. Chef Charlie brings his culinary skills to the prep table along with his great intuition for new trends and fantastic food. Working together with Food and Beverage Director Michael Diennor, the duo put together a dynamic menu; including what’s quickly becoming a signature item; Silver City “Hog Wings”. Miniature pork shanks, slow cooked to “fall off the bone goodness”, and tossed in Silver City’s own Buffalo Sauce. Add to that other favorites such as their “Volcano of Onion Rings” and the Signature Burger and you have a sports bar menu that can’t lose. There are many options for a more classical pallet too! The Cedar Roasted Atlantic Salmon, Filet Mignon and the Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo are all crowd pleasers. Salad lovers will be thrilled with the many delicious salad choices including the Asian Fusion Salad; Marinated Grilled Salmon with Mixed Greens, Bell Peppers Carrots and Red Onion, Drizzled with a Ponzu Vinaigrette Dressing. Chef

Marczewski has indicated that there will be daily specials available too. One of the summer fun features of the Silver City Sports Bar and Grill is the great outdoor deck. Opened Spring, Summer and Fall for perfect “el fresco” dining and a great way to relax after a hectic day. Both the Silver City Lunch and Dinner Menus are available on the deck 7 days a week, whenever the sun is shining! Live entertainment is expected for the deck on Saturday nights beginning in June and throughout the Summer. Until then, there is Karaoke every Saturday night from 8:30 PM -12;30 AM. There are many other specials available at the Silver City Sports Bar and Grill including Happy Hour Monday – Friday with halfpriced appetizers and drinks specials. Happy Hour hours are 4PM – 6 PM Monday – Friday and again from 10 PM – 11 PM. The Silver City is also offering $5 Martini’s and FREE manicures every Tuesday. Sports fans can be confident that the greatest sporting events will always be available with the sports packages available on the multiple screens including NFL Ticket, Major League Baseball Extra Innings, ESPN Game Plan the NBA League Pass plus all major sporting events in nearly every sport! Alicia Cavallo, Silver City’s Restaurant Manager said “We are really very excited to show off what a great choice we are for eating out and getting out! We have so much to offer for great dining, getting together with friends and watching great sports. Silver City is the new spot to be, so be sure to get here!” Silver City Sports Bar and Grill; Good Food, Good Drinks, Good Prices, Great Times!

Haggett Longobardi (A Division of Julius H. Cohn LLP)

Community Service Is A Cornerstone Of Our Business When Julius H. Cohn founded J.H. Cohn LLP in 1919, Woodrow Wilson was president, Prohibition had just been ratified, and the world was still a decade away from the Great Depression. Today, J.H. Cohn is one of the largest independent accounting and consulting firms in the United States (with offices in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and California), and while much has changed in the more than 90 years since its founding, the ethos with which Mr. Cohn established the Firm continues to be one of its hallmarks today: “If you do your best to faithfully serve your community, your clients, and your associates, the rest will take care of itself.” Throughout J.H. Cohn’s history, community service has been a cornerstone of its business philosophy, and the Firm has consistently sought to help and provide for less fortunate individuals. An example of how J.H. Cohn’s Connecticut office, located in Glastonbury, gives back is through its partnership with the Travelers Championship golf tournament. For the third consecutive year, J.H. Cohn will serve as the presenting sponsor of Birdies for Charity, a pledge-based program designed to help Connecticut not-for-profits raise unlimited funds with no administrative costs. Any Connecticut 501(c) (3) organization can raise

money by soliciting pledges –as little as one cent!– based on the anticipated number of birdies made during the 2010 Travelers Championship. In 2009, 1,888 were made, which meant that each one cent pledge netted $18.88 for the soliciting organization. Those pennies pledged quickly add up when multiplied; those who solicit two cent pledges – still, unarguably a nominal donation – realize their fundraising goals even quicker. There are no administrative costs to not-for-profit organizations, as J.H. Cohn handles the administration of the program, tracks the pledges, and, upon tournament officials’ notification of the number of birdies, bills donors, collects the pledges, and returns 100 percent of the funds to not-for-profit organizations through the Travelers Championship. As an additional fundraising incentive, in 2008 J.H. Cohn created Birdies Bonus Bucks, a pool of $15,000 to be shared by the ten organizations that collect the highest pledges. A $5,000 prize is awarded to the top fundraising organization and the remaining $10,000 is split among the second through tenth place organizations. “Bucks” will range from $500 to $2,500. Frank Longobardi, managing partner of J.H. Cohn’s Glastonbury office, hopes to encourage more not-for-profit

organizations to participate in and raise more funds through Birdies for Charity, and has added an extra incentive to program participants. “As an added incentive, if more than $200,000 is raised in 2010 through Birdie for Charity, we will increase the Birdies Bonus Books pool to $20,000,” he recently announced. “Giving back is a hallmark of our business, and we want to actively encourage others to join us in giving back to those around them at a time when every not-for-profit organization can use an extra boost.” J.H. Cohn encourages all Connecticut not-for-profits and those that support them to learn more about Birdies for Charity by visiting www.travelerschampionship.com. The Firm is proud to continue its partnership with the Travelers Championship to help notfor-profits raise “bucks” for their organization, and to also raise awareness of the good work done all year-round.

We specialize in all phases of exterior and interior renovations for residential and commercial clients. We offer onestop-shopping for any project you can imagine, from basement finishing and remodeling to roof jobs and everything in between. Fiderio & Sons is the place to go to cut your energy costs and reduce your tax bill at the same time when you’re doing windows, gutters, roofing, siding, additions or any remodeling project. Stop by our showroom to see the fully functioning kitchen, have a cup of coffee, check out options in many areas such as cabinetry, features, accessories, color selections, finishes, countertops and more. All of our kitchens are designed with special software and professional experience to guide you through the process. Once you see your design on a big screen TV, it’s easier to make changes based on the 3-D images that show just how it would look in your space. Veteran home improvement contractor and company owner, John Fiderio, urges customers to come on in and learn how to take advantage of the Energy Tax Credit. The extended tax provision is a sort of “bailout for homeowners,” offering a substantial 30 percent

tax credit for homeowners who make certain home improvements that will help reduce energy consumption. Fiderio & Sons can offer you special savings and help you really save money. The package means some very attractive tax credits, including: windows, exterior doors, roofing and solar water heater tax credits of 30 percent, up to $1,500. These tax credits are available on qualifying products that offer significant energy savings when installed. The new tax benefits mean you save money now and later. You’ll start cutting your home energy bills right away, and continue to save for years to come. “It is really a win-win situation for the homeowner,” Fiderio says. “You get a big tax credit up front, and then you get to save on energy costs year after year.” Fiderio & Sons’triple-pane replacement windows are eligible for the 30 percent tax credit, and will help you reduce your home heating and cooling bills by 40 percent - guaranteed! Start here on your way to real savings. Fiderio & Sons offers products and systems that will improve your home’s energy efficiency and qualify for the tax credit. If you are spending $3,000 per year to heat and cool your home, which is typical, a 40 percent reduction in costs means you will save $1,200 every year. We offer similar savings with its energy-efficient doors, roofing and solar hot water systems.

Fiderio & Sons offers a variety of other home improvement and remodeling services designed to make a home “more comfortable, more convenient and more valuable.” One of our newest offerings is a “one-day bath makeover” with our luxury bath system, which has proven to be a hit with homeowners. Fiderio & Sons crews install a highimpact tub/shower surround that can transform the look of an old bathroom in just one day, for significantly less than a full bathroom renovation. For the increasing number of customers who are looking to make their homes more accessible as they age or just have a difficult time getting around, our tub-to-shower conversions are very popular. You can add

grab bars, seats and other customizations as you turn your tub into an easy-to-use shower space. We are also proud of our green products, including our solar hot water heating system that brings 80 percent of your hot water from solar energy. Again, this means a great reduction in your utility costs and lessens the environmental impact, whether your home uses oil, gas or electricity to heat water. “We are very excited about offering this – and all of our energy efficient products to clients,” Fiderio said. “With our record of 25 years of success, we are proud to continue the company’s tradition of providing our customers with the best products and services. We thank

Ice Cream, Fried Dough, & Lots of Fun and grated parmesan cheese, to cinnamon sugar and ice cream. John Sigel had been thinking about opening an ice cream shop, and finally the opportunity to do just that presented itself. “Christy’s is modeled after a place in Rhode Island that serves a similar menu. Also, I just thought ice cream and fried dough would be a perfect fit with the other unique items on our menu,” he said. “We thought people probably wouldn’t find anyone else in the country with a menu that’s like ours.” And, as this season heats up and the customers are coming in to Christy’s, Sigel is getting some very positive feedback on the ice cream and fried dough business. “We originally opened to cater to kids, combining our daily menu with a great spot for birthday parties as well,” he explained. We do everything ñ from planning the party to helping you run it. Eat your fried dough, ice cream, ice cream cupcakes, and other birthday treats at Christy’s, or, if you’re having your party at home, we’re happy to bring your goodies to you for a party that’s a real hit! It’s not everyday you find an amazing new familyfriendly, fun restaurant serving up some of the most perfect treats to grace the same menu - like ice cream, fried dough and steamed cheeseburgers ñ yes, all under the same roof. John Sigel knew he had a unique idea and opened Christy’s Ice Cream, at 96 Elm St. in Cheshire, in September. Now it is everyday you can go out for all of the service, excitement, and truly unique menu offerings that make you and your family really say, “Wow!” We’re proud to serve delicious Praline’s ice cream, including Christy’s exclusive Zack Attack flavor (with secret ingredients we can’t divulge here!). Our fried dough is based on Grandma’s traditional recipe once served at the Mt. Carmel Festival. Hot spicy chicken wings, steamed cheeseburgers, hot dogs, fries, salads, wraps and more are featured on our enticing menu. The all-new cow-theme shop, with fun spotted floors and walls, is named after Sigel’s daughter, Christy Sigel, who grew up in Cheshire and always wanted to start her own business. “My dream came true last summer when my Dad opened Christy’s Ice Cream & Fried Dough,” she says. “It’s a great shop in a converted red barn on Elm Street.” The entire family is excited to run its first business, especially since they saw a need for an ice cream shop in the center of town. “It’s gonna be great because we have the best ice cream and fried dough around and lots of other great items you’ll love,” Christy says. Our ice cream is the best because it’s so creamy and it comes in 22 flavors. And the country fair favorite recipe fried dough comes from a family recipe Christy’s Grandma used to make at the Mt. Carmel Festival. Now you don’t have to wait for the fair to feast on this specialty. It’s available with an assortment of great toppings, from tomato sauce

this spring with an upgraded formula. The delicious chocolate disc contains 500 mg of calcium; the vitamin K was replaced with magnesium, which is especially appealing to those who take blood thinning medications that limit their vitamin K intake. “Magnesium does the same thing, but there are no adverse reactions to this new form, which also has more vitamin D and D3,” she said. “It’s a supplement – as well as a treat. Instead of taking a giant horse pill, you can be having a nice piece of chocolate. The dark chocolate is lactose free. A lot of people like the fact that it’s really a delicious chocolate.” “It’s a pure chocolate taste that’s definitely more palatable than your typical supplements. You can’t tell it’s actually good for you,” said Adora Calcium Nutritionist, Michelle Traub. The Adora chocolate nutritional supplements are available at Thompson’s retail store, online and at nationwide retailers such as Whole Foods. We are proud to use quality, organic and Kosher ingredients for our all-natural chocolates. “Today it’s really unique to have a company that’s entirely in the U.S. In fact, people don’t realize that we do produce all of our products right here in Meriden,” Kirsten Sullivan, Technical Director explained. “One thing that makes us unique is that we’ve stayed true to our roots for 131 years.” Thompsons recently welcomed its new CEO, Gene Dunkin, who brings a great wealth of experience following a career with Godiva. Thompsons Chocolate started out as a horse-drawn ice cream wagon and transitioned to a small store that sold ice cream and chocolate for viability through the other seasons. Only, the quality and innovation of the chocolate products meant many seasons of success for Thompson Chocolate. It’s common for customers to visit the retail shop from out-of-state in an effort to keep their family holiday tradition – seeking the perfect chocolate rabbit, or the company’s signature pecan bark, which is handcrafted and only sold through the retail store in Meriden. Thompson Candy believes chocolate is fun and we offer an artful line of nonseasonal chocolate novelties. From chocolate cigars

Thompson sells products all over the country,” said Retail Store Manager Melanie Milburn. Our primary focus is on private label products, which is about 80 percent of our business.” You can come to Thompson’s store five days a week for delicious chocolate. Another aspect is the company’s experience and intense management of customer assets. “Wadsworth Investments is a very hands-on company. We have an investment committee with decades of combined experience that communicates daily. We watch the markets and confer continuously on trends, examining client investments and reacting as necessary to meet their needs,” he said. “We do not get involved in esoteric investments, we do take a proactive, not hyper-active, approach.” At Wadsworth, they fulfill their mission by diligently reviewing the investment market on a regular basis, and automatically moving our clients to the shelter of money market funds safety. Wadsworth was once quoted as saying, “We don't try to be Barry Bonds and get the homerun record. I want to win the record of having least strikeouts.” In addition to pro-active management of mutual fund, annuity and retirement portfolios, Wadsworth Investment Company offers a variety of other services including estate planning, tax-deferred annuities, and much more. The company’s advisory service has more than 300 agents nationwide, offering services through more than 50 respective(?) brokerage firms. Wadsworth got started in the business in 1965 as a mutual fund specialist and decided to launch his own firm with entrepreneurial spirit. The company’s holdings include a financial group that offers estate planning, tax preparation for clients and more. Wadsworth Investment is almost a well-kept secret, operating primarily based on word-ofmouth referrals throughout the state. Wadsworth, a former Rotary Club president, proud father and grandfather, takes pride in supporting the communities in which he lives and works. Wadsworth Investment Company is located at 879 Church Street in Wallingford, Connecticut. Mr. Wadsworth and his staff can be reached at 203-269-9730.

Wadsworth Investment Company, Inc. of Wallingford is more than a proud, familyowned investment and wealth management firm that has been in business for nearly four decades. It just might be your key to financial survival. They believe in building a portfolio similar to a championship sports team, combining a great offense for up markets with a great defense for down markets. Without both, you rarely achieve long-term success. During periods of down markets and poor economic conditions, Wadsworth clients have, on multiple occasions, avoided much of the major stock and bond market declines. In the fourth quarter of 2008, the firm hosted a client celebration party (when other firms were suffering losses) because their clients were not invested, but instead in the shelter of money market funds for about ninety percent of the year. Wadsworth clients in 2009 profited from a disastrous 2008 market, making it one of the best ever performance years for the firm. “We’ve actually become beneficiaries of the down market,” said company President William Wadsworth. “If you have over $50,000 in a mutual fund, annuity or 401(k) portfolio you need to call us right away.” The first large example of Wadsworth clients turning what were bad times for investors at other firms in to actual profit was the Wall Street market crash on Oct. 19, 1987. Wadsworth explained. “Our clients avoided losses because we had gotten them completely out of the stock and bond market in time. What makes us unique is that we preserved tens of millions of dollars for our clients during down markets,” he said. One factor in the success of Wadsworth clients is the employment of their affiliated company, PTS Asset Management. PTS provides the active management for Wadsworth clients. PTS is an SEC-registered advisory service specializing in active management of investments including mutual funds, variable annuities, and 401(k)/403(b) savings plans. Wadsworth Investments is the only locally-owned and operated brokerage firm that offers this valuable service. “We avoided major losses in 2000–2003, as well as 2008 and early in ‘09. Our clients were in safer money

With the rising cost of energy today, there is a great demand for these home-heating appliances. Moran’s also offers stereos, washers, dryers, ranges, refrigerators, air conditioning units, dishwashers, microwaves and gas grills. “Flat panel televisions are still selling like crazy,” says Owner Jim Moran. “We’re seeing a high percentage in growth in many of our hightech television products over last year – so something we’re doing is right.” We are nearing five decades of experience serving clients in the community. Unlike here today gone tomorrow box stores like Bernies, Circuit City and Tweeters who have left their customers locked out and no one to turn to. Moran’s still takes pride in keeping up with the latest technology that our customers demand. The technological updates we offer in our many product lines are part of the reason our customers keep coming back over the years and referring their friends and families. At Morans TV & Appliance we carry a full inventory of appliances. If you are looking for a refrigerator, oven, cook top, stove, dishwasher or washer/dryer - we have it in stock. We also stock a huge inventory of Digital Projection, LCD TVs, Plasma and surround sound equipment. Most odd brands are throwaways,” he says. “People are spending a lot of money for them and they can’t be repaired. Moran’s services all the major brands we sell.” Moran’s unparalleled service and quality products are well known throughout the area. Customers often tell their friends and family of the friendly service and great value they got at Moran’s. The result? You get exceptional service for the life of your appliances.” The Galleria showroom helps customers visualize their finished projects in any room of their home, from the family or media room to the kitchen and beyond. For major heart surgery, you want the very best doctor in the industry – someone knowledgeable who’s been at it for years. To sell your home, you want the best Realtor around – someone with an excellent reputation, background and skills to achieve your goals. And, when you need to replace your TV or one of the most used appliances in your home, you want a company that knows everything in the business and can offer you a lasting piece that looks and performs beyond your expectations: You want Moran’s Television and Appliance. For 50 years Moran’s Television and Appliance has been a trusted name, widely known for the quality and personal service it offers customers. Our customers rely on our name for special television and appliance products that last. Over a half century as a family-owned and operated business, we’ve come to know our products inside and out and we have built close relationships with all of the major manufacturers. We are proud of the reputation we’ve developed for “amazing” service as much as for the quality we bring our customers. In turn, many of our customers come back to us year after year. “Moran’s has been my family's television store since before I was born almost 25 years ago! We have bought every television we have owned from them because they believe in giving people the best possible deals,” says Lisa M, a satisfied customer. “For our last television purchase, the staff at Moran's did everything in their power to get it to us for Christmas. And, as promised, we had our new TV for Christmas! The staff is courteous and really tries to find you that "perfect" TV for your needs! I would HIGHLY recommend them for any television purchase!” Today customers can shop at Moran’s well-known location at 664 West Main St. in Meriden, as well as its Hearth & Home Appliances showroom in the Galleria Design Center, 234 Middle St., just off I-91 in Middletown. Don't go to a big box store with products so diverse that they can’t possibly specialize in the one you want. Some sell everything from tools and software to CDs and cameras. At those stores, you're likely to be helped by someone who flipped burgers last week, worked in DVDs yesterday, and who can't tell you anything about a refrigerator, a microwave or a dishwasher except what’s on the label. If you really want help -- come to the experts! Moran’s has been in the appliance business for years. It’s what we love, it's what we do, and it's what we know. So if you want to get your money's worth, come shop for your appliances with us and expect nothing less than expert advice and service. Moran’s has seen great growth in recent years, which

Regency House of Wallingford is celebrating the completion of an extraordinary renovation project, which means a full sweep “in with the new” for the nursing and rehabilitative care facility. The brand-new, state-ofthe-art facility now boasts the newest beds in the state of Connecticut, with two entire units newly constructed and waiting to help you or your loved one. Helping patients recover as quickly as possible is the top goal of our high quality care team. We specialize in providing traditional longterm care, Alzheimer’s and dementia care, short-term rehabilitation and much more. Now, with the recent completion of our $11 million transformation, many significant improvements to our facility will help recovery become faster and more comfortable than ever. The changes at Regency House also include the addition of positions that could total two dozen new employees. “We went through a complete and total renovation of what was a 45-year-old building,” said Tim Brown, Director of Marketing & Communications. Regency House of Wallingford is now a 130-bed building, which is about a 40 percent increase in size. The larger facility means increased patient comfort and amenities to help you enjoy your stay. The previous building had three beds for each patient room, but the new one features single and double rooms and private baths. The building also features brand new therapy space for the short-term rehabilitation program. This is a signature program from National HealthCare Associates, called Passport Rehabilitation. Learn more about this innovative program online at www.PassportRehab.com. “If you’ve had a hospitalization and need to transition home afterward, you would come to this new unit,” said Nursing Home Administrator Patrick McDonnell. “Our motto is, ‘Your passport to home.’” We provide individualized personal care with the single goal of getting you back to your home. Throughout the changes in physical appearance at Regency House, one thing did stay the same – the caring staff that is committed to providing the highest level of care while working to maximize each patient’s independence. We focus on meeting the short-term needs of our communities, which includes anything from hip replacement and knee replacement, to anything requiring a short-term rehabilitation stay. We are here to help as you go through your rehabilitative journey. If you have a family member who needs specialized dementia care, we have a

I’ve set some of the rarest gemstones in the world. Lang doesn’t sell just anything. “The quality of diamonds that I sell are really above and beyond what the average jeweler offers,” he explains. “I offer years of experience over others in the business, and I’m very fussy about what I sell.” Lang works hard to be sure each customer gets the best value and really understands what the product is that they’re buying. “I want them to feel like a breath of fresh air when they come in, that they’re going to be treated fairly and honestly,” he says. “I have developed lots of contacts in the business. There are different vendors we buy from that will only invite you into their fold after you build a relationship together.” Lang is known and revered for his technical and creative skills, performing high-quality, sophisticated repairs and original fabrications. I always wanted to learn how to make it and be involved with everything from its design and creation to helping others select perfect pieces to suit their styles and needs,” said Robert Lang, Goldsmith and Owner of Robert Lang Jewelers, LLC. The shop is conveniently located in The Country Plaza, 1101 S. Main St. in Cheshire. Today Robert Lang Jewelers lets you have it all, and have it your way. You can find a full selection of diamonds, gemstones, gold and silver in stock, plus you can have your one-of-a-kind dream piece hand made. Lang works with platinum, palladium, gold and silver, doing all his own stone setting, from diamonds to opals, prong setting to bezels and more. Lang has worked in the jewelry industry for over 34 years, since he was 17. He worked in retail and management before pursuing a formal education in design and creation of jewelry. Lang attended San Francisco’s Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts. He holds a Diamond Degree with the Gemological Institute of America, GIA. Since he opened the local shop in 2004, Lang continues to pursue professional studies. He is now working toward a Graduate Gemologist Degree from GIA. Robert Lang Jewelers is true full-service retail jewelry store. The shop invokes a quaint, relaxed and inviting atmosphere. You can stop by for just about anything related to jewelry. Get your watch battery changed while you wait, drop off jewelry for insurance appraisal and repair, shop for everything from handmade $5 glass beads to very rare and elegant black diamond necklaces, have your ears pierced and enjoy a glass of champagne during your visit! Assisted Living Services, Inc.

Providing a Broad Range of In-Home Eldercare Services ability and need help.” Assisted Living Services, Inc. offers Homemakers that perform housekeeping and household management, meal preparation, and medication reminders. “We also have Personal Care Attendants who work with clients in 8 to 12 hour shifts” according to Sharon. These staff have specialized training in Alzheimer’s care, and are all formally trained in a Home Health Aide or Nurse Aide training course making them ideal at providing supportive care to clients who have a chronic and stable medical condition. The effort to promote PCA services is spearheaded by Lynne Schmidt BA, Manager. “Lynne was the former manager of an Assisted Living Facility and has outstanding insight and experience” said Sharon. PCA’s have been used widely in various Assisted Living Facilities and home settings statewide. The company also has Live-in Caregivers who are also specially trained and stay with the elderly 24 hours a day to assure safety and wellness. This program has been a great asset to many families who need around-the-clock coverage and is operated by Tom Daly MS, Director of Live-in Services. “Tom has developed a program that encourages family involvement in selecting and making the right match for their loved ones, Tom is dedicated to assure that families are satisfied with their caregivers and we are fortunate that he has such great experience in rehab from his previous employment at Gaylord” said Sharon. The company also hired Mary Scagliarini RN, a former Wellness Nurse from an Assisted Living Facility as a Live-in Coordinator to assist in this rapidly growing area. In addition, Mary is a Dementia Care Specialist and provides staff education. The key to the company’s success is because it has surrounded itself with the very best employees. From Homemakers to Managers all staff must truly love working with the elderly, and have a proven track record of reliability and compassion. All newly hired staff are insured and bonded and must have a National Criminal Background Check. “We are very proud to have attracted such an excellent staff” said Ron D’Aquila. “The company works collaboratively with various services such as Hospitals, Alzheimer’s Association, Rehabilitation Facilities, VNA’s / Hospice Agencies, Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities, Protective Services, and the Connecticut Homecare Program for the Elderly,” said Ron D’Aquila. The company’s central office is located at 128 Broad St. in Meriden. Assisted Living Services,

Inc. also has branch offices in Glastonbury and Clinton and is evaluating opening other offices in the State. The company offers free inhome evaluations by a Registered Nurse. For further information, contact (203) 634-8668.

Sharon D’Aquila was the caregiver of a grandparent with Alzheimer’s for many years. Lifelong Meriden resident Ed (Babe) DeRosa had lived in his home for over forty years and she respected his wish to live in his home for as long as possible. She was able to watch for his safety in the early stages of the disease – however as the years passed and the disease progressed, the demands put upon her grew as well. As she pursued resources to assist in his care she recognized a lack of quality nonmedical in-home services. She and her husband Ron then established one of the fastest growing businesses of its type in Central Connecticut. Assisted Living Services, Inc. was established in 1996 and now has more than 300 staff providing a broad range of inhome eldercare services to hundreds of customers and their families throughout Meriden, Wallingford, Cheshire, Southington, Berlin, Avon, Milford, and Middletown, as well as 50 other townships throughout Connecticut. “What we have really tried to do is focus on being a premier quality service,” according to Sharon D’Aquila coowner. Sharon’s previous work experience is with the Connecticut State Police. Ron is a Registered Nurse with over twenty five years of acute care, community health, and managerial experience. Between the two of them they bring the right balance to a business that must focus on reliability, trustworthiness, and high quality service. “We look forward to positive feedback from our customers and reward premium service with incentives” Ron D’Aquila said of the thousands of dollars the company has put toward rewarding employees who go “over and above, or have perfect attendance.” The families we work with are under so much stress, and they need our staff to give them a break while feeling reassured that their loved one is in good hands” said Sharon. We get our referrals from the children of elderly clients – the so called “sandwich generation” in a quandary about how to get help for their parents at home while balancing the responsibility of raising children and working each day. Not only is homecare favorable because people prefer to stay at home, but it is also considerably less expensive than other options. “Generally our customers are older and need just some help to stay safe and happy in their home. But we also provide services to those affected by Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, getting Hospice Care, as well as others of all ages who have some type of dis-

Summa Construction

For a Bathroom Remodeling Job Done Right – & Fast There’s something to be said for a bathroom remodeling company with experience on more than 3,000 bathroom jobs. For Summa Construction Services, which averages about 150 complete bathrooms each year, bringing customers everything they need for the perfect bathroom, with high quality and professional workmanship from start to finish, this is just what earned the company recognition as Central Connecticut’s 1st name in bathroom remodeling! When Frank Summa began Summa Construction in 1963, his vision was of a company that believed in quality work and the approach that “the customer comes before the dollar sign”. Today it’s still owned and run by family, and that same philosophy that has guided Summa Construction through over 45 years in remodeling thousands of bathrooms throughout central Connecticut still holds true. Owners Pat and Joanne Summa as well as their two sons and Pat’s brother are the people you’ll see, talk with and have working on your job. “We are true to our word and believe each and every person we work for is the most important person in the world,” Joanne says. “We take pride in giving TOP NOTCH service in a time where others have the attitude, “I am busy and will

get to it eventually.” We are a small family business and really love doing our job. We take pride in our work and our service.” Did you ever want your bathroom done right, but the thought of a long and drawnout construction process seems daunting – not to mention how it would disturb your family or your daily schedule? With Summa Construction, you can have your bathroom completely made over in just one week. That’s right, start on a Monday and finished that Friday – just in time for weekend entertaining, or just to relax and have everything done, including the cleanup. Summa Construction Services even includes professional work done by master plumbers, which is the most important part of the job. You can have your whole bathroom done for as little as $5450, including tax, installation and debris removal included (approximate size of room quoted is 5x8), in one week! This makeover includes: all plumbing, new water-resistant sheetrock, new interlocking water-tight sealed tub and walls, new toilet and seat, medicine cabinet and light, vanity and marble top, all faucets, a pressure balance tub, faucet and sink faucet, plus a vinyl or ceramic floor. If you don't need complete bathroom remodeling we also offer partial bath remodeling.

You can replace your old tub and tile or shower stall with a new interlocking, water-tight sealed fiberglass tub and wall system or shower unit - in ONE day! Or, if getting in and out of that old tub is getting too hard for you, replace it with a new interlocking water-tight sealed shower unit. This is not a reglazed or a mold hiding liner. “We take an out-of-date or broken down bathroom and transform it to a beautiful room,” says Joanne. “We have met so many nice people in the many years we have been working. It is so nice to run into them in a restaurant or store and have them tell us how much they are loving their new bathroom.” Summa Construction uses top quality products such as:American Standard, Kohler, Moen, and other names you know. Call to stop by today and see our full showroom, open by appointment, of all our products for you to choose. At Summa Construction Services, LLC projects are handled by licensed and insured, trained professionals known for their commitment and attention to detail. There are NO "jack of all trades" here. Wallingford Family YMCA

Strong Kids, Strong Families & Strong Communities With our full daily schedules, sometimes the last thing we think of is taking care of ourselves – spirit, mind and body. The Wallingford Family YMCA located at 81 South Elm Street can help! The Y offers an extensive lineup of activities for people of all ages – with the goal of getting you involved and healthy. “We’re doing a lot of new programs and trying so many new ideas and initiatives,” says Shannon Silver of the YMCA. “All of our programs really show our innovative and creative side.” The YMCA has a 65-year history of offering health and wellness activities. We try to take the whole person into consideration when we provide programming for families. The YMCA offers a list of exciting programs that are literally designed with everyone in mind. This includes the specialized senior fitness program for active older adults, a Learn to Swim program, many new teen programs such as the Saturday Night Club for 11-to 15-year olds, Movie Madness nights at the Rotary/YMCA Teen Center, private tutoring, middle school overnights, fifth-grade dances, and Flick and Float at the pool. There’s

also a Road Race and a Tennis Tournament – as well as many other activities for you to check out. This fall, the Wallingford Family YMCA received a policy and environmental change grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to help fight childhood obesity. A team of community leaders has been meeting since the fall to develop a community action plan. As a response to this initiative the Y also celebrated a graduation of its pilot program, Fit to Go. Fit to Go is a middle school program focused on self-esteem, exercise, nutrition and more. The YMCA has teamed up with the VNA, Youth and Social Services Department, Wallingford Public School System and United Way to deliver this program. The YMCA is also a place kids can go for a fun this summer. Camp Ulbrich is an American Camp Association accredited and State of Connecticut licensed Day Camp that operates at the YMCA as well as Doolittle Park, Bertini Park and Mt. Ridge. Young people can enjoy specialty camps that cater to many active interests – adventures outdoors, sports and overnight excursions. One thing is for sure – all camps are

creative and fun. Also, due to popular demand Camp Ulbrich will be offering transportation from all Wallingford Elementary Schools. “Safety is our main concern, and focusing on making sure the children are having fun in a safe environment,” Shannon Silver explained. “Our counselors are specially trained and understand the role they play in the lives of children for the summer – we all want to have fun.” Children can also participate in karate, rock climbing, tennis, volleyball – and so much more. Whether you’re eight months or 80 years old, there are YMCA programs just for you! The YMCA keeps programs fun and exciting – and the community is responding, even in a slower economy. Membership numbers are ahead of last year, youth sports classes are in-demand, youth soccer, baseball, racquetball, tball, dance classes and parenttot gymnastics are all well attended by residents. There’s also a strong need for the YMCA’s childcare programs at every elementary school in Wallingford as well as Choate Rosemary Hall and Gaylord Hospital, with more than 420 children enrolled. With the expert help from Merry Maids’s professionally trained, insured and bonded housecleaning specialists, you can get much more done – get errands accomplished, or just go out to relax at the spa or elsewhere, and come home to a house that exceeds your expectations for cleanliness. You will come home to a sparkling clean and freshsmelling home after work, time with family, or whatever you want to do with the extra time you save. As more and more people are finding less time available to clean their homes, area residents are turning to Merry Maids, based at 1186 South Main St. in Cheshire, and leaving the endless list house cleaning tasks to its staff. The Merry Maids company is excited to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. This long-time commitment to clients has brought Merry Maids a first-class reputation for experience, expertise, integrity and quality. In a recent improvement toward more effective cleaning, we have switched to using all microfiber cloths for cleaning and we’re moving more towards green products. It’s just this attention to detail and meeting clients’ needs that has won the local Merry Maids the New Haven Advocate readers’ poll for Best Cleaning Service for the past three years in a row. Many people today are realizing they just can’t do it all – work, clean, take care of the house and kids – and more. It’s time to spend more weekend time with family – and not spend that precious time off from work cleaning the house. Call today and discover for yourself just how helpful and reasonable Merry Maids can be. “People realize the importance of time to themselves and with their families,” said owner Matt Eigner. “They find they can spend much more time together instead of spending their entire weekends cleaning. Hunter’s Pool Center

Proud to Bring Customers Strong Products, Friendly Service and Innovations standing success is making sure our customers are satisfied. We do this by offering top-of-the-line pool and spa products, providing fast and reliable service and by performing all of our pool installations in-house with no subcontractors. “We do everything we can to satisfy our customers’ needs,” says Kelly HunterJohnson. “If our customers aren’t happy, we are not in business. That’s why our customer service is the numberone thing that sets us ahead as a leader in the pool business”. We offer free water analysis and Eileen Hunter, our devoted store manager, can fix any water chemistry problem under the sun. Eileen and her Water Dollies take the time to explain the correct way to maintain swimming pools with every customer. There is a family member involved in every aspect of our business. Glenn Hunter is in the store to answer questions about filters, pumps and heaters, as well as provide new pool sales information. Eileen Hunter is our store manager, water chemistry guru and new pool salesperson. Kelly Hunter is in the office and does our advertising, prepares estimates, bills, resolves customer service questions and is a new pool salesperson. Craig Hunter is in the store as well selling pools and answering customer’s questions regarding every aspect of pool service, installation and maintenance. Alan Hunter is out in the field with his crew installing aboveground pools. Kevin Hunter is the inground pool installation manager as well as the aboveground liner replacement manager. Bobby and Jesse Hunter are also out in the field servicing our Saratoga hot tubs, pool filter systems and installing inground liner replacements. Lee Hunter is also an important member of the pool installation crews. As a family working together, with our additional year-round employees Carolyn Pavlick, Troy Baylow, Dan Cwirka, Billy Berlepsch and Armand Menard, Hunter’s service is unsurpassed. In fact, Hunter’s combined years of experience for our 19 full-time employees exceeds 295 years. That is an average of 16 years of experience for every employee! We are proud to bring our customers a new pool mainte-

nance service to provide vacuuming, water balancing and filter cleaning on a weekly basis. This summer you can look forward to spending your free time enjoying your pool, rather than tending to it. Pool maintenance can still be a cinch, even if a weekly service contract isn’t for you! With a Hayward Automatic Vacuum, Hayward sand or cartridge filter system and the Once-a-Week Sustain Chlorine System, you will have a crystal clear pool throughout the summer with no effort at all. Sustain also has an algae-free guarantee, so you no longer have to spend the summer battling green water. Our goal is to make your pool ownership fun and enjoyable! Hunter’s Pool Center’s recreational vehicle division, Hunter’s Recreational Products, also has new developments. Our BRP Can-Am ATV line is in demand, growing as an industry leader for performance. These machines are often used for utility reasons (to plow driveways) as well as recreation/racing. Our CarMate trailer line is growing as well. DMV registration is available right at our store. We have a trailer to meet any need – utility, car/motorcycle transport, snowmobile/ATV and more. Following a successful Ski-Doo snowmobile season, we are excited about our yearly showroom transformation to highlight pool games, toys, chemicals, equipment, filters and accessories. Stop by May 22 for our 12th annual Customer Appreciation Day! This oneday-only sale, featuring deep discounts on some of our top products and throughout the store, is our chance to extend our sincere thanks to our loyal customers as we celebrate the start of a new swimming season. This event for the whole family includes clowns with facepainting and balloon characters for the kids as well as a huge outdoor picnic for everyone. You can also shop online at www.hunterspool.com or visit us in the store throughout the summer. Our daily summer hours, effective May 1, are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Give us a call at (203) 269-2183, we’d love to talk with you about how we can serve your swimming pool needs!

Law Office of Lars Edeen Jr.

Brings Hometown Friendliness, Experience constant for as long as I can remember. Edeen knows customers have a choice, and that’s why he works to offer the highest in integrity, knowledge and value in his services. “Customers now demand a whole lot more than they used to - and that's where I come in. I am happy to help my clients,” Edeen explained. At the end of the day, the real estate practice is unique from other forms of law such as litigation. Real Estate is exciting because it usually always results in happy outcomes. At the end of each closing, we know we’ve helped to parties reach a major goal. I enjoy watching the faces, and hearing the excitement in the voices of young couples as they start their lives in their new homes. Favorable feedback from pleased clients has helped us build our reputation while building a business based on repeat clients and recommendations to others. Most clients come to the practice from referrals, either from other professionals in the field such as Realtors, mortgage brokers and bankers, or from past clients. “It makes me feel good that they are pleased enough with what I've done for them that they send their family and friends to me,” he said. The Law Office of Lars Edeen is a very friendly atmosphere all around with its hands-on approach. It's not confining the way some marble- and leatherbound-style offices can be. “There are no pretenses here, it's a professional office with a rustic hometown feel. We try to make customers feel at ease from the moment they first talk to us on the phone to the final time they step out the door,” Edeen says. “I'm accessible nearly all the time. I speak with clients a lot more than other attorneys may.” For more information about the Law Office of Lars Edeen Jr. call (203) 265-9899 or e-mail to: attorney.edeen@ sbcglobal.net

The Law Office of Lars Edeen Jr., 171 Center St. in Wallingford, specializes in providing professional real estate law and general law services. With nearly 15 years of local practice, Lars Edeen Jr. takes pride in staying involved in the community he serves. Edeen and his wife, Mary Edeen, enjoy raising their six children in Wallingford - his own hometown. Mary, who is now a licensed Real Estate agent, also works in the law practice. And, when Edeen puts down his attorney briefcase following a day in the office, he puts on a baseball hat as a Little League coach of about 20 years. Edeen has helped the league in many capacities including as an officer and as a T-ball coach. This year marks his third as League President. The same drive and passion to help others follows Edeen on and off the field. Hard work brings positive outcomes, especially when it comes to satisfied clients, he says. It has always been my priority to do my best to meet clients’ needs. “That's how I've always operated. I provide a service and I like to help meet clients' needs in any way I can,” he says. He also keeps an ear to the ground for trends in the real estate market so he can best help clients. “I find the Real Estate market is down somewhat, but not as much as what you’d expect based on national news media reports,” he said. “Things are starting to improve.” My advise to sellers is to price it right and be patient. Entry level home sales have been bolstered by the “first time home buyer credit” offer to first-time home buyers. The entry level home sales have historically been fairly constant anyway. Every week there are new couples getting married, a few years later are starting their families and need to find suitable housing to raise their children. The demand for these starter homes has been a

America’s most fuel efficient car company – & Much More! try, taking over from the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and other similar vehicles. “It’s the biggest market segment and the one everyone wants to be in,” Doyle explains. “Hyundai really has arrived with this car and some other new models including a brand-new Tucson sport utility for 2010. Everyone who drives it loves it – it’s an amazing vehicle. The products we have out now – many people can’t imagine that they are Hyundai cars. As a dealership, we’re absolutely thrilled to bring these products to our customers because all Hyundai vehicles have come so far.” Our automobiles are at the point where Consumer Reports recommends our entire model line - sedans and sport utility models, including the Santa Fe, Veracruz, Sonata and Elantra. That’s the endorsement that everyone wants. New customers are coming in everyday – people who might not have traditionally shopped for a Hyundai. The Toyota and Honda owners are coming to us now. “We’ve always felt very lucky to be in this town and to have a wonderful bunch of customers who keep coming back,” Doyle said. “While 2009 was the best year we’ve ever had, we’re seeing more of the same this year. We feel extremely fortunate to have such an amazing model lineup and be America’s most fuelefficient car company.” All models are achieving top scores for reliability, fuel economy, performance and safety, which is a top priority for us. In fact, one reason our Elantra is a recommended car

In the car business, the product drives the manufacturer’s success. And, for Meriden Hyundai, some of the top-recommended models are grabbing everyone’s attention, from reviewers to consumers. “We just came off our busiest year ever and we’re hoping for the same in 2010,” says Meriden Hyundai Owner Bob Doyle. “The product is what’s driving our business to heights we’ve never dreamed.” In May of 2012, Meriden Hyundai, at 318 South Broad St., celebrates 20 years in business. Today, owners Tod Moynihan and Bob Doyle, couldn’t be happier with the direction the cars have taken overall in quality, fit and finish, safety and affordability. I don’t think we could have envisioned this franchise being so successful and Hyundai being so tuned in to the American market, Doyle said. Most models are designed in California and tested primarily in the United States. The design studio is putting out exactly what the market wants and needs. The biggest news from Meriden Hyundai is the introduction of a brand new Sonata model that was just released. It now appears on the covers of nearly every car magazine on the market. Everyone is touting it as ‘America’s New Best Seller,’ as it edges out the Toyota Camry for the country’s top spot in sales. Resembling a larger Mercedes, this freshly designed Sonata’s styling sets it apart from other cars in the biggest market segment in America. The all-new Sonata is likely to lead in the indus-

Canada Dry Bottling Co./Tomassetti Distributors

Tomassetti Distributors Helps Us Hydrate – and Stay Snack Fortified! tion on Cambridge Avenue. “We supply products to customers from Darien to Enfield, Torrington to Willimantic – all parts of the state,” said Dan Tomassetti. The company was started in 1940 by Alfred Tomassetti and the current owners’ uncle, Edward Tomassetti. Back then the beverages and snacks delivered were much different. Initially it was just a bottler of Canada Dry products. “We actually bottled and distributed the products in parts of New Haven County,” he explained. “As time went on, we added more non-soda drinks. Now we’re going into snack foods also, like Deep River Snacks. We’re looking to add other snack foods as well.” The business has evolved from having to manufacture

its own products to sell, to taking products from big bottlers who truck them in and then distributing them. Changing to meet the demands of customers, and providing quality, prompt service have been key to the company’s longevity. Deep River Snacks, an Old Lymebased company that was started in 2001, recently added Tomassetti, the former Canada Dry Bottling Co. of Meriden, to carry its products. It’s founder, Jim Goldberg, wanted to sell natural products that feature innovative flavor combinations. His potato chips include Asian sweet and spicy flavor, sweet Maui onion, and mesquite barbecue. Cheddar popcorn and baked fries are also available by Deep River Snacks. Among the drinks you can

find on a Tomassetti truck in New Haven County, are: Snapple Beverages, Stewart’s Root Beer, Nantucket Nectars, Nesquick and Canada Dry products. The company has been in the family since it was founded, with Dan and Tony taking over in 1984. Although 2009 was marked by a down economy, Tomassetti says things are starting to pick up.

“I see signs of things turning around,” he said. “The retailers’ mood seems more positive now.” Tomassetti Distributors sells to everyone from WalMart to Stop & Shop, to small mom and pop delis and anywhere else that serves soft drinks or has a vending machine. Business has mostly been by word of mouth. “Today we handle over 300 different

items that we sell, between soft drinks and snacks,” he explained. You have to have a knack for knowing what sells best at what time of year.” It’s a year-round business. People drink soft drinks and eat snack foods everyday – 365 days a year. For more information, call Tomassetti Distributors at (203) 235-5751.

Being productive and just keeping up with the demands of daily life means it’s pretty important to stay fortified with plenty of good snacks, and well hydrated by drinking plenty of beverages. At least one local company thinks so – and for good reason! Tomassetti Distributors, based at 266 Reservoir Ave. in Meriden, is a local distributor of Deep River Snacks, Snapple and Canada Dry products. The local company delivers over 300 different soft drink and snack products throughout the state. The company, owned by brothers Dan and Tony Tomassetti, also offers a vending machine service, which was recently expanded. Tomassetti Distributors is headquartered on Reservoir Avenue, but it also has a warehouse opera-

Also new, Jerome Home and Southington Care Center received a grant through the Connecticut State Department of Labor and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, for a CNA employee ladders program targeting career advancement. Jerome Home is proud to have been deemed deficiency-free following its annual Medicare-Medicaid Survey. We have so much to be proud of at Central Connecticut Senior Health Services, from services we offer to seniors, their families and our communities, to the outstanding accomplishments of our team members who work so hard to offer a seamless continuum of care. Executive Vice President Trish Walden was named a recipient of the Picker Planetree Fellowship this year, along with two other nationally-known senior care professionals. Ceil Pettit, RPT, a 20-year employee at Southington Care Center received the Planetree Spirit of Caring Award in 2009 for her compassionate care of seniors. Villa Capri

Hard Work, Strong Family Values Bring Villa Capri to Celebrate 50th Anniversary Villa Capri, This year the Villa Capri celebrates its 50th year as a multi-room, multi purpose facility for special events. The Villa Capri boasts a rich tradition and banquet rooms serving groups of 50 to 400. Pictured is the sunny exterior of the Villa Capri, 906 North Colony Road in Wallingford. ding giveaway, and is featuring a special wedding package – call for more information. “My dad believed in good food, big portions and taking care of his customers," Gina said. “It’s important to take care of your customers. We’re very customer service oriented. That’s part of having a successful business. Taking care of them and making them feel at home is what my dad always did and part of the values he gave to us.” In 1991, George Mesite finally achieved one of his top goals - buying his biggest competitor along Route 5, the Yankee Silversmith Inn. And, although the business closed after being damaged in a fire in 2007 shortly before George Mesite's death, the family seems to have managed to turn that downturn into an opportunity as well. The local zoning commission approved the family’s plans to build the state’s first location of the Sonic Drive-In fast-food chain on the site of the former Yankee Silversmith Inn. If all goes to plan, the eatery would open by mid-summer. “I don’t know if it’s what my Dad taught us or what, but we’re always looking for a new project and this happens to be it,” Gina said. “Everyone seems to be pretty excited about it, so we’re happy about that.” We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our loyal friends, customers, former and current employees for their continued support over the past 50 years. We could not have done it without you. We look forward to giving you the same exceptional service for many years to come. Thank You! The first time I saw my father really having fun he was doing the chicken dance at the Villa Capri restaurant and banquet facility at 906 North Colony Road in Wallingford. The story of the great time our family had at that wedding is still told many years later. Our family wasn’t unique. (– B&I writer). This year Villa Capri celebrates 50 years of making amazing lifelong memories for groups from 50 to 400 guests who have gathered there for events that range from weddings and proms to birthdays, anniversaries – you name it. One thing they all have in common is the fantastic times they’ve had – all at the elegant Villa Capri. Some may say that staying in business for a half a century is rare. It’s truly extraordinary that the business has been owned by the same family and operated at the same location. George and Rosalie Mesite opened Villa Capri in June of 1960, and it has remained in the family ever since. “There was nothing on the road at the time,” Rosalie Mesite said. “It was just an empty road.” George Mesite, an Italian immigrant, had owned the Venice Restaurant in Meriden before he opened the Capri at 728 N. Colony Road. He later opened the Villa Capri at 906 N. Colony Road because of the building's size and location. The move helped the business to thrive. As development along Route 5 increased, so did the Mesite family's success. “My dad started the business, Villa Capri. He basically came over from Italy with a strong work ethic and an innate business sense. He had the drive to succeed, and he wanted to provide for his family,” said Gina, one of George and Rosalie Mesite’s four children. “That’s what kept him going and he instilled those values in all of us.” George Mesite died at the age of 77 in October 2007. Today his four grown children, Mark, Ralph, Gina and Robert, are proud to run Villa Capri as they continue to grow the family’s businesses, which include properties as far away as Florida and Italy. Villa Capri’s success is mostly due to the exceptional customer service the Mesite family is committed to providing. In celebration of its 50th year, the Mesite family sponsored a complete wed-

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS CONNECTICUT CAN COUNT ON Concrete • Crushed Stone • Asphalt

Four Suzio trucks take part in a mass concrete pour which required two pumps to place material for a tower pier foundation of the bridges mainstay.

Supplying the Ready-Mixed Concrete on the new “Q” Bridge, in New Haven, CT began in March 2009. The L. Suzio Concrete Co. has been featured in each phase of the project. Suzio has been batching the sophisticated mixes required for the Job. When it’s done, the result will be a 10 lane structure that is a combination of a concrete box girder and a cable stayed bridge. The first of its kind constructed in the country. One of many columns being poured by a Suzio mixer, beside the original Q Bridge which will eventually be demolished.

Suzio Mixers discharge specially designed high strength concrete for “hammerheads” upon which the new bridge deck will lay.

In the right corner of this picture, A 32 Story High Rise Building can be seen which Suzio also supplied the concrete for.

A new Gateway Community College has begun construction in downtown New Haven and Suzio has been pouring the foundation since the project began in February.
