Town to seek bids for legal services By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

The town will seek bids for legal services — including town attorney, bond counsel and labor counsel. Earlier this month, the Town Council voted unanimously to issue a request for proposals for the services.

There was little discussion before and after the vote, with the exception of comments from Silvia Nichols, who made the motion, and Town Council Chairman Rob Oris Jr. Both said the RFP was not a reflection on how the council viewed the performance of longtime Town Attorney Alfred E. Smith Jr., a partner

with the Murtha Cullina law firm, which has an office in New Haven. “We just think it's time to refresh (the RFP) with no disparaging to the current legal services,” Nichols said during the Dec. 10 meeting. During the Dec. 10 meeting, Oris said the RFP would make sure the

Hartford HealthCare enlarged its presence in town last fall by opening a multi-specialty health center on South Main Street.

“This is a conglomeration of services the community uses,” Havican said. “We take a look at the services our patients need the most and use the most.” Local practitioners from the Hartford HealthCare Medical Group at 28 S. Main St. moved into the new building. This allowed Hartford HealthCare to expand its behavioral health care services at the 28 S. Main Street location. The plans also included closing a MediQuik, urgent

The rehabilitation area of the new center features massage, reiki, acupuncture, community events, and classes such as dance move-

ment for patients with Parkinson’s disease. The second floor of the center features primary care physicians and specialty services, including a healthy aging center that offers ride services. It’s expected to be fully opened within this year. The center also has a general surgery practice for consultations, but no surgery is done on site. There is also a dermatology practice, neurology and neuro-surgery practices. The Lyman Hall Co-Op and Sheehan hockey teams played for the Division III state championship last season. This season, Cheshire goalie Nicholas Maringola has taken each team’s best shots and beaten them both. It’s one reason why the Rams Maringola got off to a 4-1 start and are a legitimate contender to win a Division II state title on the ice this season. The Wallingford teams combined to out-shoot Cheshire 99-40 in late December. No matter, as long as Maringola was in net. A copy of the town’s current contract with Smith and Murtha Cullina was not available on Friday. According to a copy of the town’s proposed budget for fiscal 2020, which has since been adopted, town attorney costs were listed at $368,300 for both the 2019 and 2020 fiscal years. Oris, when reached Friday, said the council had been discussing whether to issue an RFP for legal services “for

a few years now.” His preference is municipal legal services that are within the umbrella of a large law firm. “I personally favor a larger firm that might have areas and divisions of expertise,” Oris said, adding that type of expertise is offered by Murtha Cullina. On Dec. 21, Maringola stopped 45 Lyman Hall shots in a 3-2 victory. “We’ve said all along that goaltending is going to carry this team, and with a couple of wins like that, he carried our team,” Cheshire head coach Anthony Giusto said. “We knew coming in, he was going to be the backbone of the team,” Giusto added. “Last year, his numbers were fantastic. Taking to the streets on skis By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

I am looking out the window. Having listened to the latest forecast, I am hopeful that we will get snow soon – and I will finally be able to break out my skis. While I wait, let me tell you my story. My husband and I used to ski “all the time.” We’d go to Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine just about every weekend. We would also ski in-state. Then we had a child. Now, this child did not share our

passion of skiing. She did not like to ski. Oh, yes, we tried. At age three, we took her to Mount Southington, but it was a battle to even get her feet into the ski boots. She was unmoving. And I mean she would not move. We also tried the very expensive weekend young kids program at Killington. My husband and I watched from the bushes. The girl and her locked knees, stifflegged her skis and ended up having her instructor ski her down that magic carpet all day.

head out for a small amount of time without it being an involved day trip. And I could do this by myself.

This is not to say she hated winter. She loved tubing and sledding and snowball fights. She just hated skiing.

One time, I skied at Chapman Elementary School, right there on the baseball field. I had to make my own tracks and there was a bit of an uphill at one end, too. That was hard work.

So, you probably know what happened next. Yes, we gradually stopped downhill skiing altogether.

Remember the big snow a few years back? No one could drive anywhere. Most roads weren’t even plowed. No problem. I skied the length of my street. I also skied my backyard and, though I don’t think the neighbors were too thrilled, I waved at them as I glided past their picture window, while skiing in their backyard.

Mixville was an option, too. Or so I thought. It turns out there’s plenty of room on the field, but it is wet and it’s no fun breaking the crust and getting your feet wet. See Joy, A8

HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S MALE & FEMALE NOMINEES sponsored by: MIDDLESEX COMMUNITY COLLEGE

NICK MARINGOLA

HAILEY BRUNEAU

With All-State goalie Nick Maringola back in net, the Cheshire Rams know they can push the attack on the ice this winter. They’ve done just that, scoring 23 goals in their first six games. But it’s been Maringola’s work at the other end that’s been crucial in Cheshire’s 4-2 start. Through those first six games, the senior has a blocker-bending 216 saves, including a career-high 48 in back-to-back games against Sheehan on Dec. 30 and WMRP last Saturday.

Hail to Hailey Bruneau, who is playing well at both ends of the floor. Through Lyman Hall’s first four games, the veteran senior, who is heading to Division III Rochester, was averaging 9.0 points a game. More than that, she’s crashing the boards and playing aggressive defense. At Rocky Hill on Dec. 27, Bruneau grabbed nine boards and blocked 12 shots. That’s no misprint: 12 blocks. Bruneau had five blocks and eight rebounds Friday at Sheehan.

JACOB VECCHIO

HAYLEIGH LAGASE

Jacob Vecchio was an All-CCC Division I lineman for Southington football in the fall and he’s ridden the success into wrestling. Lining up at 220 pounds for the Blue Knights, Vecchio has notched some early accomplishments on his belt. By placing fourth in his weight class, Vecchio was the highest Southington finisher at the prestigious George Bossi Holiday Tournament in Lowell, Mass. He had the match-clinching pin at Wethersfield last Thursday.

And hail to Hayleigh Lagase, who hit a pair of 3-pointers and came up with a key late steal to help the Lady Titans defeat Lyman Hall 40-37 on Friday night. The junior, a returning starter from Sheehan’s Class M state runner-up team, scored a season-high 21 points against Hand on Dec. 20. Lagase followed that with 16 points against Farmington in the finals of the North Haven holiday tournament, which earned her spot on the All-Tournament Team.

RASHAWN WILSON

JA’LEXIA WEST

Coming off of Friday night’s 46-40 win over Newington, the Maloney boys basketball team entered the week at 4-2. A driving force has been Rashawn Wilson. The senior put up a team-high 15 points against Newington, going 7-for-8 from the line in the process. Wilson also had a season-high 22 points in Maloney’s 58-50 win over Berlin just before Christmas. He was averaging 10.5 points a game heading into Tuesday’s game in Middletown.

OK, it’s been a rough start for the Platt girls basketball team. The Panthers lost their first five games. Ja’lexia West, though, has been playing like a champ. The 5-foot-10 junior scored 59 points and grabbed 50 rebounds over that opening five-game stretch, which means she’s averaging a double-double. West had 17 points and 15 rebounds against Conard on Dec. 20. She followed that with 10 points and 12 rebounds Friday night at Bloomfield.
