Even when her granddaughter was only 5-years-old and kicking a soccer ball around the yard, Helen Taylor could tell sports would play a big part in her life. But Taylor could never have imagined she would be watching her granddaughter – American goalie Alyssa Naeher – and her teammates win the World Cup Sunday by defeating Netherlands 20.
Naeher’s aunts Mary Lou Greer and Betty Ann Hardy leaned forward in their seats and cheered every time their niece made a save.

During the vote on a raise for Superintendent of Schools Jeff Solan, the board was divided between critics and supporters of his performance over the past year following the suicide of an 11year-old student and complaints of bullying by the public. Both Solan and Chief Operating Officer Vincent Masciana received pay increases of 2.75 percent for the current fiscal year, with Masciana’s raise retroactive to Jan. 1. Solan will make $184,320 this year and Masciana $155,935.
“I knew she’d be something, but I didn’t know she’d be a professional,” said the 100year-old Taylor, who watched the game at Elim Park retirement community with family and friends.
“If I fell like that I’d be broken,” Greer said after a diving save by Naeher.

He has handled all those situations in a calm, professional manner. I think he has earned a salary increase.” Three board members, two Republicans and a Democrat, voted against a raise for Solan.

Doolittle principal hired Doolittle has students in grades 1 to 6.
The Board of Education recently hired a new principal for Doolittle School.
Superintendent of Schools Jeff Solan said O’Brien, a Cheshire resident, has worked her entire career in Ansonia and was named teacher of the year in 2003. O’Brien and other candidates met with teachers, parents and other staff during the selection process.
Amy O’Brien, currently principal of Mead School in Ansonia, will fill the position that opened when Russ Hinckley returned to teaching. Board and district administrators praised O’Brien’s experience and approach to school communities.
After an 11-year-old Doolittle student committed suicide on Dec. 23, the school hosted several meetings about bullying and efforts to improve school culture.
Board Chairwoman Kathryn Hallen was impressed with O’Brien’s warmth, compassion and intelligence. “Amy, in my view, stood head and shoulders above the other candidates,” she said. During the July 2 meeting, the school board also ap-
proved a contract with the 200 members of the instructional assistants union, which includes hall monitors, teaching assistants and other non-certified instructors. The three-year contract increases wages by just over $100,000 each year. The district’s chief operating officer, Vincent Masciana, said the recently-passed minimum wage hike required pay increases in the later years of the contract. “The wage proposal that is before you does comply with where we need to be in each of the successive years to meet the minimum wage,” he said to board members. The contract was approved unanimously. The board also voted to extend the contracts for Solan and Masicana.

The History Hound visits Mixville Recreation area By Mitzi Romano
(Mitzi Romano and the History Hound (AKA Maverick) are back for another round of Tails of the History Hound – originally created for the Cheshire Historical Society. Today’s Tail is about Mixville Recreation area. If you have never been, your GPS navigation will get you there if you enter 1300 Notch Road, Cheshire, CT 06410.)
When we arrived at Mixville Park, we immediately climb to the top of the sledding hill and look down at the pond. Around 1830, William Mix operated several small shops in this area, with water rights to the Ten Mile River. He made pewter spoons and cutlery. To smooth the rough metal, he invented a rag buff-wheel of several layers of cloth bolted together on a rapidly revolv-

ing shaft. This process became so successful and well-known that this area became known as Rag Hollow. It wasn’t until 1846, when John and Titus Mix moved their company to this area that it became known as Mixville. In fact, John Mix was responsible for the creation of the 12-acre pond, when he built a dam to hold back the stream that flowed down from Prospect. Since the stream flowed through many farmers’ lands, he had to get their permission to flood parts of those lands. They agreed to allow him to hold back the stream until the water reached a mark that was cut into one of the rock slabs near the top of the dam. By the late 1800s, much of this land was owned by the Murphy family and the pond was known B:8.7” as Murphy’s Pond. T:8.7” In the 1930s,

the family charged admission to use the pond and built a bathhouse with approximately 16 changing rooms. There was even a beverage stand on the property. In the 1950s, a day camp called “Camp Jolly”
was held on the property. [Note: Cheshire’s Matt Bowman commented that he believed Camp Jolly was across the street from Mixville pond. “The pond was built to store water to power Con-

1. To qualify for the advertised APY, you must enroll your new or existing Platinum Savings account in this offer between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 by speaking to a banker and requesting the special rate. Offer is subject to change at any time, without notice, and is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DE, FL, NJ, NY, PA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 1.98% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the promotional interest rate period. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes all deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.00%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000, the enrolled account will not be eligible for the Special Rate and will instead earn the applicable Standard Interest Rate for a Platinum Savings account. As of 05/31/2019, the Standard Interest Rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, FL, NJ and NY with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY); and for a Platinum Savings account in DE and PA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.05% (0.05% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.10% (0.10% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, then-current Standard Interest Rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. 2. Available in-branch only; you must speak with a banker to request the special rate. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 and requires a minimum of $25,000 in new money brought to Wells Fargo. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A penalty for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the special rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1., 2. Due to the new money requirement, new accounts may only be opened at your local branch and you must speak to a banker to request the special rate offers for both new and existing accounts. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be: • Combined with any other consumer deposit offer. • Reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable standard interest rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. Five-town transfer station contract renewed By Matthew Zabierek Record-Journal staff
central location for the five towns involved.
Five area municipalities under contract to send waste to Covanta Energy’s transfer station in Wallingford have opted to renew their agreement with Covanta for five years after exploring other options.
“Quite frankly, when you look at the comparison of other transfer stations and their tipping fees, this is by far the least expensive of the transfer stations” in close proximity, Meriden City Manager Tim Coon said.
The municipalities — Meriden, Wallingford, Cheshire, North Haven, and Hamden — decided renewing with Covanta made the most sense financially after hiring a consultant last year to explore other options.
Some transfer stations in the geographical area charge upwards of $80 to $90 per ton, according to North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda, who chairs a board overseeing the regional trash partnership.
Municipal officials said the $70 per ton fee to dispose of trash at the Wallingford plant is among the lowest in the state. They also cited the
The five municipalities collectively send about 50,000 tons of trash to the transfer station annually. They are currently under a 20-year
contract with Covanta that is set to expire in July 2020. The contract includes two five-year renewal options and gives the towns a deadline of June 30 to notify Covanta of their intent. The towns hired a consultant last year to review the current contract and identify possible alternatives. The review, officials said, concluded the current agreement was the most viable option.
‘Working well’ “It would appear we have something that’s working well and there aren’t obvious other choices available,” said Wallingford Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. Dickinson said there were
many “unknowns” associated with changing trash processors, including rising fees, dwindling trash capacity and uncertainty in the recycling market. “There’s just a lot of change and new circumstances … and to try to spend money on looking further at something, it just doesn’t seem in our interest if we’re receiving good service and” comparatively low tipping fees, Dickinson said. Earlier this year, Covanta assigned its contract for the operation of the Wallingford transfer station to another entity — Country Holdings LLC — meaning Covanta essentially subcontracted operation of the facility.
Thursday
In the past, Covanta has expressed a desire to shut the Wallingford station because it has seen a declining volume of trash, making it less profitable. In 2016, Covanta proposed closing the Wallingford transfer station and moving its trash processing from Wallingford to the company’s trash-to-energy facility in Bristol. Despite financial incentives offered by Covanta, the five municipalities rejected the offer.

Farmers market will last a full season this year There’s nothing like fresh produce. Sure, one can find an assortment of fruits and vegetables at the local grocery store. Some of it might even be tasty.
Tim White publicizes his intention to run for the BOE during a recent outing in Cheshire. Joy VanderLek, For The Citizen
Campaign season begins Although Board of Education elections are not until November, BOE candidate Tim White took time on one of the final days of June to announce his intent to passing motorists at the corner of the Maple Avenue and West Main Street. There are seven seats on the BOE and four seats are open in the upcoming election. Caucuses for both parties will be held approximately the fourth week of July. White went through the Cheshire public school system, has a degree from Bryant University, in business administration/accounting, and a masters degree in environmental management and a masters at Yale School of Forestry. He
is employed by Yale University as an accountant. White formerly served on the Cheshire Town Council, 4th district, for a number of years. He and his wife, Connie, live in town with their two children, son Devin and daughter Maddie, who will attend Norton Elementary in the fall. "My motivators on the council included transparency, accountability, responsiveness and effective long-term planning," said White. "I view all of that as lacking with the current BOE. I'm convinced that we can do better." – Joy VanderLek

But anyone who has ever bitten into a juicy tomato just plucked from the Earth by a farmer and tasted that natural sweetness knows that there is nothing like it. That’s why farmers markets have become all the rage across the country. Cheshire got in on the act last year, opening its first farmers market late in the season. Residents could stop by the parking lot at Cheshire Parks and Recreation to pick up their corn or carrots, and maybe even peruse some crafts, as well. Now, the market is set to open again, and this time it will last a full season. Be-

cause everyone got a late start last year — the market didn’t open until August — it seemed to take a while for people to catch on that something new and interesting was available. By the time the market began picking up some steam, summer was fading into fall and the whole operation was shutting down for the year. This time, the town is doing things on schedule. The plan is to open the market this month and run it through September. Those who love their produce will have plenty of time to stock up between now and when the weather begins to chill once again. But the market will, like all things, only be as successful as the people allow it to be. If residents don’t turn out, vendors won’t either. After all, this is still about

supply and demand. If the demand isn’t there, the supply will dry up fast. We hope that doesn’t happen. Cheshire has some wonderful local growers who are expected to attend the market, ready to meet the customers where they are. They are offering products you can’t find in many other places … quality products, that is. When things kick off, the hope is that the public will be there with smiles on their faces and bags ready to be filled. Residents can come out, enjoy a summer evening, and go home with healthy produce for that night’s meal or the next day’s breakfast. Want the market to last? Make sure you’re a regular customer and it’s bound to return, year after year.
Culvert with painted French flag Taking a path to the bridge (see photo), we wondered, “What is a bridge doing out here in the middle of the woods?” Well, at one time, this wasn’t the middle of the woods, but the path of the trolley line from Waterbury to Cheshire. Cheshire was actually the transfer point between cars on the New Haven-Waterbury line and the Cheshire-Milldale shuttle. Waterbury cars stopped running in 1934, while the Milldale and New Haven cars stopped in 1936. The old trolley line is now just a pleasant hiking trail.

Neeta Vatti, a board Democrat, opposed contract extensions for both Masciana and Solan. The district’s two top administrators have three-year contracts that are typically renewed in the final year. Vatti wanted to see contracts with definitive terms and successor agreements reached rather than constant renewals. She also felt the raises were “a bit high.” Perugini supported Masciana’s raise and contract extension, saying his efforts on district contracts have saved money. “Vincent delivers results. I think he’s one of the most valuable employees we have in the district. Two point seven-five percent is a drop in the bucket compared to what he does for us,” Perugini said. Hellreich said contract extensions are common among educators. “It’s more like a vote of confidence,” she said. Not renewing the contract is “basically telling them, go look for a job.”
BOBBLEHEAD GIVEAWAY Lorna Tyrrell, center, and her grandson, Nathan Butler, 7, gasp during the game. Tyrell's cousin, Alyssa Naeher, was the goalie for the American team.
