September 11, 2018 Dear Parent/Guardian: I write this letter to inform you of the recent arrest of a Berlin High School teacher. While I cannot comment of the specifics of the case, please know that the safety and well-being of all students is and will always be the first priority in the Berlin Public Schools. It is for that reason that the school district took immediate action, placing the teacher on administrative leave on February 9, as soon as the district learned of the investigation concerning the teacher’s alleged actions. School administrators have been in close contact with law enforcement authorities throughout the investigation and we will continue to cooperate with law enforcement authorities. I am fully committed to ensuring the safety of all students and I also believe firmly that staff members must be accountable for their own actions. It is with great regret that I must share this information with you today. As educators, we are entrusted to protect and educate all of our students and it is critical that we maintain appropriate teacher-student relationships and provide for the safety and well-being of our students at all times. My hope is that this highly unfortunate situation will not cast a shadow over the important work carried out by the teachers and staff members in the Berlin Public Schools who provide an outstanding education and safe environment for our students every day. Sincerely,
Brian J. Benigni Superintendent of Schools BJB/db
