WEST HAVEN — The Lyman Hall Trojans squared up for the final faceoff of the SCC/SWC Division II hockey championship game with 15 seconds on the clock. They had their first power play line on the ice — plus a sixth skater — for the game’s final 1:40, but Jared Anderson and the North Haven Nighthawks stood strong. Miss Connecticut contestant is beautiful ‘inside and out’ By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

Emanuela Stakaj has always been intrigued by beauty pageants, but school work and other priorities had kept her from trying her luck in that world. Now, at the age of 20, Stakaj is giving beauty pageants a shot as a contestant in the Miss Connecticut USA competition. “I was excited to get into it, I applied for it and was accepted,” said Stakaj, a student at Quinnipiac University studying biomedical sciences. “Miss Connecticut was never something I thought I'd be doing myself,” the Wallingford resident said. Miss Connecticut Stakaj is concerned about bullying among young people, and believes every child should feel free to be their true self.

While Stakaj certainly stands out in a crowd, her mother, Mirela Stakaj, points out, “She is very beautiful inside and out.”

Miss Connecticut USA is awarded a scholarship, and earns the right to represent the state in the Miss USA pageant.

“There are a lot of things that need to be fixed and anything that I can do to help impact that, I will do,” she said.

Miss Connecticut USA contestants must be between 18 and 28, and enrolled in college. They must also be unmarried and without children. As for the pageant itself, which will take place April 9 and 10, the clothing

It marked the second consecutive conference championship for the Nighthawks (20-2) and their 18th win in a row this season. “To beat a great team like Lyman Hall, to avenge our Opening Night loss that’s haunted us all season, to be back-to-back conference champions, it means everything,” said North Haven head coach, and SCC D-II Coach of the Year, Chris Avena. Lyman Hall led for nearly a full 40 minutes of play before Alex Peterson’s third score broke a 3-3 tie with 5:29 left in regulations. It was the first time this season the Nighthawks won while trailing in the final frame.

The Nighthawks did not let up. Shortly after killing a hooking penalty, they knotted the game at 1-1. Sophomore Ben Gilbert found the back of the net following a faceoff with 8:18 left on the clock.

The win brought an extra level of satisfaction to the Nighthawks’ locker room. They lost to the Trojans on Opening Night by an 8-1 final score and they did not forget about it.

Petersen’s hat trick earned him tournament MVP honors.

“It’s been on our mind tonight, it’s been on our mind since two weeks ago, it was on our minds as soon as it happened,” Petersen, a junior, said. “We wanted to show everybody that we are better than what happened that night.”

From the slot, Petersen fired a pass on net to tie the game at 3-3 with 7:23 left in the period.

While down 3-1, the Nighthawks outshot the Trojans 18-12 through two periods and they eventually got one to go. They threw shot after shot at Florio before Petersen flicked it past the freshman netminder with 4:05 to play in the period.

“I think they played scared not to lose and I told them in the locker room if you do that, you’re gonna lose,” Sagnella said.

“Complete team effort as it has been all year, but certainly a special night for Alex,” Avena said. The Trojans took their first penalty of the game a few moments later, which set up NH to take the ice in the third with 17 seconds remaining on the power play. Lyman Hall killed that penalty off, but saw the lead slip away near the mid-point of the period.

Almost two minutes later, Petersen struck again, this time with a shot from the point that went over Florio’s glove-side shoulder to give the Nighthawks’ their first lead of the night, and eventually the game.

In 2019, Access Health CT issued a report on uninsured residents in Connecticut. In 2017, 87,247 or 16.5% of Hispanic and Latino residents in the state were uninsured. In 2018, 83,415 or 15.3% of Hispanic and Latino residents were uninsured. Part of Access Health CT’s mission is to lower health disparities linked to income, environment, race, gender and disabilities.

The website www.accesshealthct.com offers assistance through live chat, email, or by phone. “If anyone needs help we’re available,” Ruwet said. “Our customer service department speaks over 100 languages so people can truly understand their options.” Those who need help selecting a plan can contact an insurance broker through the website. ‘Cat in the Hat’ spotted at elementary school This special day celebrates the birthday of legendary author Dr. Seuss while aiming to get youngsters excited about the written word. “Read Across America Day has been a longtime tradition at Clintonville,” Principal Lauretta Dowling pointed out. “The day is always a highlight of our school year, because it promotes reading as a fun activity. Staff and students enjoy celebrating their favorite authors, including Dr. Seuss, and reflecting on the writing skills they are learning, that could one day result in them becoming a well-known author too.”

DelPomo was dressed as Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, but many students had “Mr. Rob” pegged. “The students loved their special visit from The Cat in the Hat and the teachers did an amazing job planning activities for the students,” Levine said. Clintonville teachers honored Dr. Seuss in different ways, but all school day activities were centered around literacy “It was great to see students enjoying themselves,” said first grade teacher Patricia McGovern, “especially after what they’ve had to endure in the past two years.”
