tera Mexican Bar and Grill, a small franchise of Mexican taquerías, opened its third location, 630 Washington Ave., in April. The restaurant is owned by a Mexican family and mostly serves traditional Mexican tacos, plus some additions.
Co-owner Mariela Navarro said La Frontera started in 2018 when her family bought a taquería already named La Frontera in White Plains, New York. The family stuck with the name, took a risk and opened a second location in East Haven in 2020.
Although “la frontera” means “the border” in Spanish, Navarro said that love of
Mexican food is international. “What is ’la frontera?’” she asked rhetorically. “There's no borders. Everybody likes tacos. It doesn't matter where you live or where you're from.”

North Haven’s annual Earth Day celebration was held Saturday, April 29 at the high school. Sponsored by the North Haven Conservation Commission, the event included “a scavenger hunt, face-painting, food trucks, reptiles, birds of prey, and lots of information for making your life greener.” The conservation commision said, “Beyond raising environmental awareness, the civic groups, clubs and organizations that attend showcase opportunities to get involved and improve the quality of life in North Haven.”

Each year in the United States, an estimated 1.9 million people are diagnosed with some form of cancer. While every diagnosis is different, the disease evokes dread in almost all of us. On top of the toll cancer can take on our health, it can also create significant financial challenges. The Angel Foundation, a Minnesota-based nonprofit that supports can-
cer patients and their families, estimates that nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of individuals diagnosed with the disease will experience some sort of financial hardship as a result.
It’s a startling statistic, but even those who haven’t personally been impacted by cancer can understand how the unpredictable costs of cancer care, aggravated by potential loss of income, can be financially challenging, if not devastating.

said. Instead, they serve traditional Mexican tacos made with nixtamal tortillas. She explained that nixtamal tortillas taste better because they don’t have the preservatives of standard corn tortillas bought from a grocery store, even if they have a shorter shelf life.
Nixtamal tortillas are made using an ancient Mesoamerican technique that involves soaking, washing and hulling the grain to make the masa, or dough.
As a result, they have a stronger, earthier taste that Navarro described as the “taste of Mexico.”
Customer Rafael de León appreciated the food. He tried La Frontera for the first time recently. As a Dominican from Boston with a Mexican palette, de León said he was in the area fairly often because his company is opening a Connecticut branch.
“I must have been Mexican in another life because whenever I'm traveling, I'm always looking for a Mexican place to try it out,” he said. “I had never seen this spot, so I stopped. It has great food.”
Like many local restaurants, La Frontera has two dining areas. The right side is a dim, bar-like "cantina" decorated with pointy metal stars made out of Mexican hojalata. The left is brightly lit and is decorated in the style of a family-friendly dining room, including papel picado streamers that say "la frontera.” Navarro said that all the decorations are brought directly from Mexico, including the ceramic geckos on the walls and a giant hojalata heart that greets customers at the entrance.
“We want people to experience a little bit of Mexico,” she said.
To enhance the experience, the restaurant offers karaoke on Wednesdays, salsa night on Fridays, a live singer on Saturdays, and mariachi on Sundays.
La Frontera was also preparing for a large turnout on Cinco de Mayo (Friday, May 5) with specials on their margaritas. The holiday was originally celebrated in Puebla, Mexico, as a Mexican victory in a battle fought against French invaders in 1862.
Navarro left Puebla when she was 16 and has lived in the U.S. for 25 years now. She said that there was a small celebration in her town growing up, but Cinco de Mayo is not as commercialized as it is in the U.S. “It’s a historic thing, but it's not as important in Mexico as it is here,” she said. “The way I see it, it’s an excuse to get drunk”
Open just a few weeks, La Frontera in North Haven has already joined the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce.
Executive director of the chamber, Ray Andrewsen, emphasized the restaurant’s prime location – close to Quinnipiac University, the Amazon distribution center, the Defco industrial park and exit 13 on I-91.
“This does add perfectly to restaurant diversity in North Haven,” Andrewsen said. “The restaurant is surrounded by a lot of people who come out for lunch, or maybe they'd like to go have a cerveza. ”
A spring bird walk sponsored by the North Haven Trail Association will be held Saturday, May 13 at the Tidal Marsh Trail in North Haven (located behind Target). Walkers will set off at 9 a.m. Mark Aronson, an experienced birder, will lead the group. This is an easy walk, with great views of the marsh and Sleeping Giant. After a mild winter in the U.S., will there be an uptick in ticks this year?
Researchers say it is hard to predict how the tick season will play out. This year’s mild winter and early snow melt, though, could mean more ticks earlier than usual and a wider spread of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases, scientists said.
In Connecticut, ticks are showing up in greater numbers this year, according to Goudarz Molaei, a tick expert for the state. So far, more than 700 ticks have been sent in for a testing program that normally would have gotten 200 to 300 by now.
The state typically sees a lot of Lyme disease, which got its name from a Connecticut town.

When it comes to your
health, where you go matters.
If you or someone you love is coping with a cancer diagnosis, keep in mind that there are strategies and resources available to help contain the financial challenges during an already stressful period. Keep these tips in mind and be sure to seek help where it’s available.
While your physical health is and should remain your top priority following a cancer diagnosis, your financial health is important, too. Take the time to consider how your household income and expenses may be impacted – and steps you can take to mitigate a potential financial toll.
For example, if you anticipate you may need to take time off of work to seek treatment for the disease, talk to your company’s HR department about what benefits may be available to you and if your absence qualifies for Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) coverage. Also seek to understand your health care plan to ensure you maximize the coverage avail-
able when paying bills related to your care. Depending on your situation, consider using your emergency fund (e.g., bank savings account or money market fund) to meet your expenses versus going into debt if you can avoid it.
If you don’t have health insurance coverage – or your policy won’t sufficiently cover the care you’ll need, it’s worth exploring the kind of support you may be eligible to receive. Because bills and debt can add up quickly there are alternative financial resources available to many cancer patients. National organizations like the Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition (CFAC) can help connect patients to financial resources. In some cases, you may be able to find resources closer to home. For example, the Angel Foundation’s Virtual Financial Workshops in Minnesota connects cancer patients with a social worker and a Pro Bono Certified Financial Planner through workshops and one-on-one meetings designed to decrease anxiety about managing finances.
You will likely talk to your insurance company and other financial institutions often. Make sure you have a written record that includes key details of your conversations, including the time, date and what you talked about it. This is a crucial way to keep track of your medical expenses, and a handy cross reference when your medical bill arrives.
With cancer or any other disease that requires medical intervention you will likely be inundated with documents, bills, insurance letters, doctor letters, and invoices, among other items. It is important to keep this paperwork organized.
Some patients are prompted by their diagnosis to get their estates in order, too. Particularly if you have dependents, now may be the time to meet with your es-
tate attorney and ensure your will, trusts and other documents are up-to-date and in keeping with your wishes. It may feel overwhelming at first (especially with everything else on your mind), but a qualified and compassionate lawyer can help you break it into manageable tasks. Knowing your financial plan is in order gives you peace of mind to focus on your treatment and healing.
A cancer support system –which can be found online, through in-person groups or with friends and family –provides individuals with cancer and their families with information, support and hope. They can provide a sense of community, which can be beneficial during a difficult time. Additionally, support systems can offer individuals access to information about cancer and treatment options.
In a recent social media post, the North Haven Police Department shared that Dick’s Sporting Goods, 411 Universal Drive North, dropped off some items from the store that officers may find useful to have at the ready. “Items such as these can go a long way in giving our youth a little comfort during a traumatic event, or act as an icebreaker during a law enforcement encounter,” the NHPD stated.

Infected ticks spread bacteria, viruses and parasites that make people sick. Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne infection in the U.S., mostly in the Northeast and Midwest. An estimated 476,000 Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Black-legged ticks, also called deer ticks, can carry more than Lyme-causing bacteria. They can also spread babesiosis, anaplasmosis and Powassan virus disease. The lone star tick, mainly located in southern, eastern and midwestern states, can carry ehrlichiosis and Heartland virus disease. American dog ticks can spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Ticks pick up disease-causing germs by biting infected wildlife, usually rodents.

are mostly dormant during the cold winter months, and emerge as temperatures rise, but can be active on warm winter days, too.
Memorial Day is often considered the start of the season but that’s largely because that’s when people in cold-weather states start spending more time outdoors, said Sam Telford of Tufts University’s school of veterinary medicine in North Grafton, Massachusetts.
Lyme disease cases typically peak in June, July and August. April and May are typically lighter months, but not always.

Tiny ticks at the nymph stage about the size of poppy seed could be active early this year, said Dr. Bobbi Pritt, who studies tick-borne diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “When we have mild winters, we do anticipate that the ticks are going to be out earlier, and biting humans,” Pritt said.
A bad season?
Government disease trackers say predicting how tickborne diseases will trend is complicated. The number of ticks can vary from region to region, and diagnoses can be affected by how well different doctors test and report cases.
The changing climate has both positive and negative implications for ticks, as warm, wet weather is beneficial to them, but especially hot weather is not, Telford said. Tiny ticks could indeed
be active early, but a dry, hot summer could also kill ticks, he said. The best approach is to assume ticks will be very active. “Every year should be considered a bad tick year,” he said.
Thankfully, there are numerous ways to prevent tick bites. The CDC recommends treating clothing with products containing 0.5% permethrin. It’s important to be especially cautious in areas where ticks live, such as grassy and wooded areas. Using repellents and doing thorough checks afterward is also key. Limiting exposed skin also helps avoid bites.
The disease can cause a fever, chills, fatigue and muscle and joint pain. It’s treated with antibiotics, and most people recover. Left untreated, it can worsen, causing symptoms such as heart problems and debilitating pain. There is no Lyme vaccine on the market in the U.S. for people but one is being tested.
