Lawmakers have their say on marijuana legalization This week, Connecticut became the 19th state to legalize adult, recreational use of cannabis. Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont signed the bill into law Tuesday, June 22.

Police officers from around the state participated in the 35th annual Special Olympics Torch Run last week. On Thursday, June 17 the torch was passed through North Haven, Wall-

ingford and Meriden. “It’s nice because it brings unity and togetherness,” Meriden Police Chief Roberto Rosado said as he prepared to participate in the run with members of his department. “We are united and come together to serve

not ourselves but to serve others and it’s important.” Meriden officers received the torch from Wallingford police on Route 5 just before 11 a.m. on June 17. The Wallingford crew carried the torch from the North Haven

The Senate approved the legislation – An Act Concerning Responsible and Equitable Regulation of Adult-Use Cannabis – Thursday, June 17 on a 16 to 11 vote. Four Democrats joined all the Republicans in attendance in opposition. Nine senators were absent for the vote, including Republican Paul Cicarella, who represents the communities of Durham, East Haven, North Haven and Wallingford. North Haven’s other representative in the senate, Democrat Martin Looney, voted in favor of the bill. Beginning July 1, people age 21 and older will be allowed to possess and consume marijuana. Also, the law lays the groundwork for a new cannabis industry in the state and attempts to address racial inequities stemming from the nation’s war on drugs. “We had a chance to learn from others, and I think we’ve got it right here in the state of Connecticut,” said Lamont, referring to the multiyear effort to finally pass a legalization bill during a ceremony at the state capital. The final legislation headed to the Senate after passing the House of Representatives on a 76-62 vote on Wednesday, June 16. In the House, North Haven representative Dave Yaccarino, a Republican, was a no vote.

This time, even more than just the tennis Revived Filipek Tournament a restorative event for its director, players By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff

NORTH HAVEN — The return of the Wint Filipek Sr. Memorial Tennis Tournament was a success in its new home and for its new charity. The 17th annual event culminated in the championship matches Thursday evening, June 17 at Ridge Top Club in North Haven. The nine courts at the club were filled with doubles action. By the time the night was done, all 12 matches were decided and champions were crowned. The true winner was the tournament beneficiary, the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Tournament director Wint Filipek said he plans on cutting a check in the neighborhood of $25,000 to the organization.

It’s a charity close to Filipek’s heart. His wife Margaret is afflicted with Alzheimer’s, and Filipek suspended his tournament while the couple coped with the ailment. “It’s our first time back in a few years and it’s a little bit smaller this year,” Filipek said. “I’m thinking about bringing it back next year as long as my wife is OK. I’m kind of back in a groove. I know people come out here and have a good time.” Filipek was overjoyed with the weather, the field and the competition. For the first time in the tournament history, all finals were completed by the last day of the event. But this year’s tournament was about more than tennis. Filipek said seeing so many familiar faces was uplifting to him.

one to come for the finals. I got a bunch of emails back saying they can’t make it, but they are so glad the tournament is back. “People come from all over the state and say how much they love the tournament.” Filipek was particularly excited about his two oldest grandsons, Benjamin and Zachary, playing in the Men’s C Doubles division. At this point, all signs point to the tournament returning next year. Ridge Top Club

would be open to hosting again and, Filipek added, that Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association would likely be the benefiting charity again. Michele Klimczak, the president of the Ridge Top Club Board of Directors, said the club was thrilled to host the event. “We’re excited to see our courts busy,” Klimczak said. “We were happy to donate our hosting fee back to the tournament. We weren’t going to take anything. Wint is

very generous and we know the money is going right to the (Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association).

Ridge Top opened up on Memorial Day for the first time since 2019 and does not typically host large tennis tournaments.

“It was our pleasure to do this,” she added. “This is what everyone needed after the pandemic.”

The Filipek, meanwhile, has continued its tradition of giving out scholarships to high school seniors in central Connecticut.

MONEY MATTERS: How to get savvy about investing to be. If you’re new to investing, know that it all starts with financial literacy – understanding the basics. Here’s a primer: Study common investment terminology. The stock market is rife with complex concepts, so start by getting a grasp of the frequently used terms and concepts. It helps to understand the language of investing, from asset allocation to ETF and beyond. To break it all down, use an online investment dictionary that provides plain-English definitions of common investment terms, or ask your financial advisor to explain them to you. Enroll in a class. Take advantage of free webinars, seminars or workshops on investing fundamentals. If you prefer learning in a classroom setting, look for basic courses on investing, how the stock market works or personal finance at a local college or university. Follow the news. Start following the business and financial sections of your favorite media outlet to get a healthy dose of investment know-how. You’ll begin to

understand the types of business activities that influence the marketplace — for example, oil prices or new housing starts — and gain an appreciation for what’s considered newsworthy. As you become more attuned to global markets, you’ll start to see the ripple effect of mergers and acquisitions, product innovations and even frontpage news stories — from natural disasters to general elections and terrorist events — on Wall Street confidence. Watch investment programs. Public radio and television stations often feature investment programs aimed at new and seasoned investors. Even your local news channels may include a market segment. Be wary of infomercials disguised as informational investment programs, though. Check out stock market apps. There are hundreds of apps available today focused on helping consumers understand investing. Before downloading an app, check the reviews and opt for those that have been vetted by trusted sources.

SUDOKU

Track your favorite companies. To better understand the movement of individual stocks, pick several of your favorite publicly traded companies to follow. Then, check their stock price, company newsroom and social media accounts each day. Tracking the stocks over time will help you understand how company announcements and actions, such as a product launch or comment by an executive, may affect the stock price. Work with a financial professional. A professional can help you understand your investment options, and help you make financial decisions that are best for your individual needs. Work with someone who is willing to explain investment concepts and provide educational materials. Tell the professional about your desire to learn more about the market. He or she will likely be willing to send you news articles, add you to a newsletter or give you a call to discuss market news that may interest you.
