Town giving out food, gift cards for holidays

LEO CLUB MAKES IT OFFICIAL

North Haven residents are welcome to reserve their names for the town’s 2021 Holiday Food Distribution Program and Holiday Gift Card Program. The gift card distribution is intended for North Haven parents or legal guardians with children age 18 and under who are facing financial hardship. When calling to register, you’ll be asked to provide the names of each of the children residing in the home, their age and the school they attend. Proof of hardship will be required, as well. Requests for gift cards must be received by Thursday, Dec. 16. Appointments to pick up gift cards will begin the week of Dec. 13.

On Nov. 16, the North Haven Lions hosted a dinner event to commemorate the founding of the North Haven Leo Club. The Leo’s 16 charter members signed their certificate of organization, and three additional youngsters joined the club. Also, Leo Club officers were installed. They are: Jane Leamon (president), Katelyn Spader (vice president), Aaron Baraquin (secretary) and Darek Samsel (treasurer).

The Holiday Food Distribution is intended for North Haven residents facing food insecurity. The distribution will take place Friday, Dec. 17, noon to 1 p.m., at the Recreation Center, 7 Linsley St. (next to Town Hall Annex). Requests for food must be received by Friday, Dec.10.

North Haven Lions in attendance at the Nov. 16 gathering presented the local Leos with charitable contributions to bolster their fundraising account. Leo Clubs are the youth wing of Lions Clubs International and encourage development of leadership qualities through community service. The North Haven Leos welcome new members. The D8 squad, comprised of cheerleaders age 5 to 8, earned the state crown in their division. Meanwhile, the D12 squad (age 9 to 12), placed second in their division, finishing less than one point behind the first-place team. By placing in the top three, the North Haven squads secured a spot in the AYC New England championships. The North Haven teams – nicknamed the Elite Eight and Tough Twelve – began training for the season in July, and practiced 2-to-3 days each week to get their routines down.

CIAC expands football playoffs starting in 2022

CHESHIRE — Starting next fall, more Connecticut high school football teams will make the postseason. A dozen more, in fact. Last week, the CIAC Board of Control approved a Connecticut High School Coaches Association proposal to expand from four classes to six beginning with the 2022 season. With eight teams qualifying in each enrollment-based division, the to-

tal number of qualifying teams will jump from 32 to 48. The plan was first proposed by the CHSCA to the CIAC Football Committee at the April 22 meeting. “I think it’s a good thing; we’ve had too many years where deserving teams didn’t get into the playoffs,” Platt coach Jason Bruenn said. “The coaches want it.
