SELECTMEN CONVENE
NORTH HAVEN FAIR
Board sends several items to residents’ vote By Everett Bishop Town Times
Several firsts in 77th year Even after 77 seasons, the North Haven Fair introduced visitors to an event full of firsts. Some of this year’s firsts included a performance from Spotlight Stage Company, a mariachi band, a full honor guard flag ceremony and Celebrate North Haven Day, which kicked off the fair on Thursday, Sept. 5. North Haven Day put various community organizations and groups at the forefront of the fair and introduced guests to all the town has to offer. “We wanted to let the North Haven people know more about the fair and what we have here. That allowed nonprofits and businesses to come in to showcase their items or their business,” said Pam Trepanier, a member of the fair’s board of directors.
Trepanier said Celebrate North Haven Day was “a big hit,” so the fair would likely bring it back next year. First Selectman Michael Freda said while the North Haven Fair has been “a tradition here for decades and generations,” he appreciates that the fair and the board continue to bring in new attractions. Mosquitoes in town test positive for West Nile The Central Connecticut Health District received word from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station that mosquitoes in nine towns in the district tested positive for West Nile Virus, including North Haven. According to Charles Brown, director of health at CCHD, West Nile is typically found around this time of year. He added that “eight of 10 people don’t really have any symptoms” when they’ve contracted the virus.
West Nile leading to death is rare, with the agricultural station reporting that “approximately 10 percent of the symptomatic cases result in death.” Fatality is more likely for those over the age of 50. Brown said prevention is based on “property maintenance and personal maintenance.” “What we recommend is people limit their activities around dawn and dusk,” said
Brown. “Long sleeves, using insect repellent with DEET. That really helps to limit the number of bites that someone is going to get and lower the rate of transmission.” Additionally, it is important to eliminate as much standing water on your property as possible to stop mosquitoes from breeding. Cleaning out bird baths, emptying out any cans or garbage cans that may collect water and even investing in larvicides for any ponds or bodies of water on your property can go a long way, according to Brown.
“People can really take an active level of control with respect to West Nile Virus,” said Brown. “Everybody wants to get outside and we highly encourage that. You just have to take the right

The petition comes in the wake of the Johnson & Johnson trial in Oklahoma that cost the company $572 million for its role in the country’s opioid crisis. Weldon joined the company in 1971 as a sales representative after graduating from Quinnipiac and became CEO and chairman of the board in 2002. He retired from his post in 2012 after a string of recalls forced the Food and Drug Administration to take over three of the company’s factories.

The petition, first reported by Quinnpiac’s student-run television news station, states that Weldon “has no place at the forefront of Quinnipiac’s management” and that he does “not reflect the values of the University.” As of Sept. 10, Onofrio’s petition had 168 signatures.

In 1998, Weldon served as worldwide chairman of pharmaceuticals at Johnson & Johnson.
In May, Quinnipiac President Judy D. Olian said the university was “indebted” to Weldon for a $15 million donation to the school. Court documents from the Johnson & Johnson case reveal that “opioid sales increased fourfold” from 1994 to 2006

New plastic bag law forces shoppers, stores to adapt collected on plastic bag fees.
By Jeniece Roman Record-Journal staff
WALLINGFORD — A month into the new plastic bag law, area shoppers appear to have adapted to the change fairly quickly. The law requires stores to charge 10 cents for every single-use plastic bag, which will be completely banned by June 2021. The law applies to most retailers, pharmacies, restaurants and supermarkets. Grocery stores, like Stop & Shop and Big Y, have opted to eliminate single-use plastic bags at checkout completely, while encouraging shoppers to purchase paper or reusable bags instead. Jim Polites, communications director for the state Department of Revenue Services, said Friday the department does not yet have data
“It’s a part of a store’s sales tax return, reported later to the state,” he said in an email. But the department has been impressed with the business community’s engagement. “These stakeholders have played a particularly constructive role in bringing questions to DRS on various facets of implementation of the plastic bag fee, which have informed agency guidance to taxpayers,” Polites said. DRS Commissioner Scott Jackson was not available for comment. Jim Martin, a spokesperson for Big Y, said customers have adjusted to the change relatively well and are opting for reusable bags.

R-J EDITORIAL
“The change is pretty seamless now,” Martin said. “A few forget their reusable bag and buy paper bags but we’re seeing less and less of them.” Meriden resident Norma Barillaro said she made the transition without much difficulty. “It really hasn’t affected my shopping much except when I forget to bring my bags,” Barillaro said. “Now I leave them in the car.” Marie Krantz, who visited the Big Y last week with her family, said while she understands that the change will be good for the environment, it can present challenges. “If you have kids it gets hard because you have to get your kids ready and then remember your bags,” Krantz said. Now that the summer vacation season is just about over, it makes sense to note that the state’s Passport to Parks program appears to be a big success. Attendance at state beaches and parks has been up by around 10 percent this year over last year, just as 2018 was up around 10 percent over 2017. This is due in large part to the two-year-old program, which provides free admittance to state parks for vehicles with Connecticut license plates.
Before the Passport to Parks program, people paid $13 for one visit to a location such as Hammonasset Beach State Park. Now they can make unlimited visits to state parks for free — covered by an extra $10 they paid for their car registration. Also, parking fees for outof-state cars have been increased. The $10 fee on car registrations is expected to generate around $16 million annually, most of which goes to covering the See Passport, A11

Fair From A1
emailed the board of directors a few months ago to talk about performing at the fair. What came of that email was a Saturday spot on the fair’s mainstage for North Haven’s newest addition to its theater community. “The fair was wonderful! We performed a 50-minute set on Saturday afternoon after being rescheduled from Friday night due to the rain,” said Christopher Sumrell, the co-artistic director for Spotlight, in an email. “We had 16 people perform more of a cabaret style set and it was received really well. Our performers were professionals as always and did a great job.” Despite all of the changes to the fair’s roster, the board of directors made sure to keep the things people love the most. This included bringing back magician and juggler Robert Clarke, the Dinosaur Trail and pig races as well as the full array of exhibits from agriculture and animals to home arts such as woodworking and photography.
“When they first walk into the chocolate room and you see joy on the kids’ faces … that’s what happens when they walk in here,” he said. “And we did that. It makes us feel fantastic, that’s why we do it.” ebishop@record-journal.com 203-317-2444 Twitter: @everett_bishop

Donations poured in for farm-to-table dinner On Wednesday, Aug. 14, 100 people gathered at the Farm to Table Dinner on Arrowdale Road in North Haven to not only enjoy the fourcourse dinner, but also to tour the Brockett’s Farm Museum. The museum is filled with antique farm tools, the Christa Jo Glass Studio with beautiful fused glass and stained glass gifts, and Walt Brockett’s fully-equipped woodworking shop tucked away in the hay mow of the old barn. Also, dinner guests saw the visiting animals, including mammoth donkeys, llamas, goats and sheep, which were brought in from Guilford by Kim Brockett Cappelli, her husband Mike, and son Drew. A display of tractors, dating from 1950 up to present day, and historical farm photos just beyond the dinner tent added to the farm atmosphere.
The large, open field offered plenty of space for the tent, and guests enjoyed seeing the antique corn crib, flower filled wagon and gorgeous gardens in the area. This land is part of the old Arrowdale Farm, which was a very productive dairy farm for the Brockett family for generations. The dinner was prepared by Stellato’s Deli and Catering, led by Steven Stellato, and assisted by Tim Carr and Jill DeChello, editor of North Haven Magazine. Frankie Muzio, owner of Frankie’s Organic Fruits and Vegetables Market on Hartford Turnpike, donated many boxes of organic vegetables and fruits. Frank Bumstead donated grass-fed local beef, and Liuzzi Gourmet Food Market on State Street in North Haven donated the chicken.

The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven contributed country casual flower bouquets in Mason jars decorated with raffia. The gardeners also shared patio pots from their homes to decorate the tent areas. Jr. Garden Club reaps harvest On a bright Saturday, members of North Haven Garden Club’s Junior Garden Club gathered to harvest their gardens at the Faith United Methodist “Garden of Eatin.” Baskets of tomatoes, corn, cucumbers and string-beans were picked and divided among the youngsters to bring home to their families for all enjoy. Herbs like basil, parsley and oregano were also picked. The melons and eggplant needed another week or so.

Source: Forbes, “Forbes Best-in-State Next-Generation Wealth Advisors” 9/4/2019 Forbes/SHOOK Research listings are based on data compiled by many of the nation’s most productive advisors, selected by their firms, which is then submitted to and judged by SHOOK Research. Key factors and criteria include: assets under management, revenue produced over a three-year period, regulatory and compliance record, and credentials/years of professional experience. Portfolio performance is not a factor. This award is not indicative of this advisor’s future performance.
