High-flying fun this weekend Firefighters are hard at work preparing Norton Park for the Plainville Fire Company’s Hot Air Balloon festival this weekend, now in its 35th year. “This event gets better and better every year and we just want people to come out and enjoy themselves,” said Jim Lenois Sr., festival chairman. The three-day festival, Aug. 23-25, attracts tens of thousands to Norton Park to watch balloons lift off at 6

a.m. on Saturday and Sunday morning. Saturday evening features another balloon launch at 6 p.m. After the first launch on Saturday, craft and food vendors take over the park, with 120 booths in total, and an antique car show that runs from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. Vendors and other activities continue through the evening with live musical entertainment Friday and Saturday evening. Friday night also features the balloon glow, at 7:30, when balloons are inflated See Festival, A9

Coffee, cookies and community grants The American Savings Foundation invited local nonprofits to the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library on Tuesday, Aug. 20, for an informal networking session to learn about the foundation’s new Community Grants program. Nonprofits from Berlin, Plainville, Rocky Hill and surrounding towns were in attendance. Responding to feedback from the community, the foundation launched the Community Grants program in late 2019 to respond to a wide range of local needs throughout the 64 towns tra-

ditionally served by the American Savings Foundation. The foundation considers Community Grants requests for organizations that support Education, Human Services, or Arts & Culture.

Quite a few went on to play college ball, and some made it all the way to professional baseball. It is with sorrow, and sadness that on September 2nd we will be closing our batting cages forever. will be a primary vote on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Candidates are seeking Town Council and Board of Education seats. The Republican Town Committee held a vote to endorse candidates and came up with the candidates who really are the only choice to properly represent all the citizens and their financial interests as taxpayers. Since this primary will cost the taxpayers approximately $6,000, how about if we get our money's worth and have a huge turnout for this important vote. I urge all voters to vote the candidates on Row A. John Kisluk Plainville

ADVICE

Reminder: We build our communities By John M. Jaramillo

Recently, I saw a checklist geared toward aspiring entrepreneurs which broke down how they should reassess their goals for the back half of 2019. It read “2020 is 6 months away. It’s not too late. 1. Start your business. 2. Invest in an asset. 3. Decrease debt. 4. Form new business partnerships. 5. Build your knowledge.” It’s a great, simple, and quick list to help get our act in order. And non-entrepreneurs can also heed those tips. Whether in our business, work, or personal lives, each of those consider-

ations is applicable and transferable, and we should all figure out where we stand on each. To apply it to those areas, read them this way: 1. Start and go for what you want. 2. Invest what you are and have wisely. 3. Let go of those things holding you down. 4. Find connections that fulfill you, making you happier and better. 5. Build up what you know and what you’re aware of in your environment and beyond.

Where do you stand? If you sat down and went through the list above, what would you see? Where would your wins be? Where would more work be needed? It’s such a powerful list. There is, though, one more item I’d add to it: Contribute to your community. Many people ask me why I tag local towns and commu-

nities in my social media posts. Yes, I won’t lie, it does get you on different people’s radar. It’s exposure. Sure. But at the same time – and I’m being honest here – I want people to see what and who’s in our community, whether it’s the greater Connecticut community, or Hartford or New Haven County, or even further See Jaramillo, A7

My goal is to continue the great work of the Plainville Republicans and ensure that we meet the needs of local students (for generations to come), in a fiscally responsible manner.

Levenduski From A1

“We had tremendous candidates internal and external who bring tremendous skill potential to the district, but you have to look at who’s best for the district,” LePage said. “It was a very hard decision, but I think David made it easier.”

A contract has yet to be formed for Levenduski, however LePage believes he will be able to begin work in Plainville before the Aug. 28 convocation. He said Meriden Superintendent Mark Benigni has been flexible and anticipates that Levenduski will be able to gradually shift into his new responsibilities in Plainville over the coming weeks.

“I'm looking forward to the community meeting with David and working with him,” LePage said. Levenduski obtained his superintendent’s certificate from UConn in June 2019 and, while looking for districts that were hiring administrators, he said he was quickly drawn to Plainville. "One of the things that really stood out to me in Plainville was in their name: Plainville Community Schools,” he said. “From just reading that and looking more into the district and then through the interview process and meeting more of the members of this community, that term really was true. It's a community partner.” dleithyessian@ record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

Amid a resurgence of interest in ballooning around that time, Laurie said fellow firefighter Bill Chamberlain was the “sparkplug” in gathering balloonists from across the state to launch from Norton Park, in what became the first Hot Air Balloon Festival. “Personally I had never seen one except in the movies or something. And they’re huge, very colorful and the balloonists were very hospitable in explaining everything about the balloons,” Laurie said. The festival took on more of a family atmosphere in subsequent years; a craft show has joined the bands playing at the park and gone is the beer tent firefighters flocked

“If you look at the town website and the signs around town, what does it have on it? Balloons … that’s what we’re known for,” Lenois said. “It’s one event in town that everybody looks forward to and it gets everybody coming together.” The event is the company’s biggest fundraiser, yielding around $20,000 on average after expenses, which goes towards equipment, donations to the food pantry and scholarships awarded to seniors at Plainville High School. Santo Galatioto, former president of the Connecticut Lighter than Air Society, said the dozens of pilots and crew who bring their balloons to the festival each year view it as a way to engage the community and as a reunion to catch up and discuss the sport. Having so many disparate balloons lifting off from one place creates a unique spectacle as well. “It’s an incredible feeling and it’s incredibly beautiful sight to see all of the different patterns on each balloon, because in this part of the country it is rare that you see two balloons that look alike. Each one is essentially unique and it’s a joy to see that and experience it,” Galatioto said. dleithyessian@ record-journal.com 203-317-2317

While the number of balloons hasn’t changed much, the number of attendees and attractions has inflated. Laurie estimated that no more than 3,000 to 4,000 people attended the first celebration. However, a typical year now sees at least 20,000 visitors. And other fire departments across the state know Plainville’s company as the one with the balloons.

Lawmaker: parents must be vigilant with kids online Then, she and other children were instructed to upload videos of themselves. If they didn’t, their families would be harmed. Linehan, the House chair of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Committee on Children, urged parents to delete the FaceCast app if it is on their children’s phones. She also urged parents to monitor their children’s devices and have dialogues with them about child exploitation. “I’m not an alarmist. I’’m a parent and a legislator and that’s why this stuff matters to me,” Linehan said. “The warning went out because this happened. I wanted to immediately get that out about kids’ phones and to remind parents to be vigilant.” Cheshire police Lt. Michael Durkee said the best defense against online predators is proactive parents. “The parents are the ones we lean on to be proactive with children,” Durkee said. Linehan offered recommendations to parents including that they should tell their

children not to interact with people they don’t know, even if it appears that person might be another child. If a child is contacted by someone they don’t know, they should tell their parents immediately. Parents should make sure their children know not to share information about their location or ever agree to meet a person they met online in person. Parents should also check their children’s phones and know what apps they’ve downloaded and messages they are sending and receiving, the legislator urged. Cheshire resident Hilary Guilford said she has similar conversations with her children on a regular basis. Guilford said her children know she trusts them, but the issue is also about etiquette and how to navigate a social sphere where people may misrepresent their actual identities through online personas. “You’ve got to teach your children how to navigate that. And you can’t teach them if you don’t know what’s on their phone,” Guilford said.

A reporter's screenshot of the TikTok app as it appears in the Google Play app store.

Linehan also recommended that parents monitor their kids’ devices daily and that they only allow them to use the devices in areas where adults are watching. Children under 16 years old shouldn’t be using social media. If younger children are using social media accounts, their settings should be private “at all times,” Linehan urged, recommending parents check often that those settings are intact. “I have this conversation with my kids often. And I check my kids’ phones,” Linehan said. “The rule in my house is if you don’t let me check it, you automatically lose it. And if there’s something going on and you don’t tell me about it, you automatically lose it. But if something happens, you come to me of your own volition, you will be rewarded. That’s the rule in my house.”

SUDOKU

Linehan said in addition to reminding parents to be actively involved in their children’s online activity, she also wants to empower children. “I want to empower kids to know what to do in that situation. Always tell a trusted adult. Always,” she said. R213831

When the family of a young person Liz Linehan knows was the target of child exploitation via the smartphone apps Tik Tok and FaceCast, the Democratic state representative for the 103rd District wasted little time alerting other parents.

An unknown perpetrator had instructed the child to download FaceCast and lured her into a chatroom with Linehan numerous other children, Linehan learned.

Kids shouldn’t be sharing information about their location, including GPS coordinates, and parents should have rules about how children use their phones and computers.

dren operates the CyberTipline, the nation’s centralized reporting system for suspected child sexual exploitation and online enticement. In 2017 alone, the center received more than 10.2 million reports, a number it says has been growing exponentially each year.

“It’s important, just like we talk about safety with drugs,” he said. The Southington Police Department has investigated cases of online abuse. Typically those reports have been tied to an issue at school and with individuals children already know, Elliott said.

In addition to contacting local law enforcement, families can report incidents at that tip line, Cybertipline.com. Families can also call the tip line at 1-800-8435678 (1-800-THE-LOST).

The department, along with many others, works with the national Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The department also works with Connecticut State Police when that agency is investigating allegations involving pornography, Elliott said.

In Southington, police Lt. Stephen Elliott, the department’s spokesman, said the officers who investigate crimes against children put together their own presentation about keeping children safe online.

That presentation covers computers, tablets, smartphones and other Internetconnected devices. Elliott said it has been shared with schools and parents.

“The apps, they do come out fast and furious. You certainly have to stay on top of it, with the way that they’re evolving,” Elliott said. “There’s so many out there, so quickly evolving and changing.”
