School district first in state to use new security software By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
The ability to summon police assistance or trigger a lockdown from an app on a teacher’s phone, 3-D maps of buildings for emergency responders and the contract to construct a new vestibule for the high school are some of the school security improvements currently in the works. “A lot of things are going on with school safety and physical safety and ensur-

Race fundraiser set for Nov. 9 A race to raise money to help bring back the defunded interscholastic spring sports season at the Middle School of Plainville is planned for Saturday, Nov. 9. The “Thanks for Giving” run will start at the Middle School of Plainville at 9:30 a.m. Runners should arrive
early for registration, which opens at 8:30. The run will follow a similar trail as the cross country route through the fields and woods behind the school. There also will be a 5K walk and a Turkey Trot one-mile kids’ fun run. These events will be moved to Nov. 10 in the event of inclement weather. Sara Limmer, one of the parents organizing the
event, said sports have too much to offer the 75 athletes who participate in the spring season — including physical, social and mental health benefits — to allow the program to lapse. The spring program includes track, softball and baseball. “There’s a lot of disappointment. I know our student-athletes really enjoy See Race, A9

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
School safety and security is our top priority By Steven LePage
In Plainville Community Schools, the safety, security and well-being of our students and staff is our highest priority. While the primary
goal of our schools is to inspire, prepare and engage our students in preparation for a fulfilling and rewarding life, we must first and always account for their safety and overall well-being. As such,
there are many measures taken to provide for both physical safety and security as well as mental/emotional well-being. District and school administration maintain a positive and collaborative relationship with the Plainville Police Department and continuously work together to ensure that our schools are safe spaces for student learning and development.

training and annual refinement to keep them current. This year, comprehensive School Safety Plans were developed within a new program we are using in Plainville called NaviGate Prepared. This program provides an online platform for all school safety materials and gives electronic access to those who need such things as school plans and schematics, 360-degree pictures of each empty classroom in the district, emergency flip charts with detailed information for staff to follow, ability to take attendance and share that with the building principal in an instant, and many more features. This program also allows principals or other incident commanders to communi-

Security From A1
LePage described Mutualink and the Rave Communications Panic Button that came with the software as being like an upgraded version of calling 911. The systems, covered by a five-year grant, have already been set up in the Plainville Police Department’s dispatch center and are being rolled up in the schools over the next month.
Thursday, October 31, 2019
“(Mutualink) developed a technology that’s pretty incredible — that pulls any type of communications, whether it’s 2-way radios, camera systems, telephone systems all into one site command, so it goes to dispatch at the police department,” the superintendent explained. The panic button is an application that school staff can download onto their phones and has been integrated into the security infrastructure in the schools to

“It saves precious time, it only takes a few seconds for someone to get down the hallway,” LePage said.
