Education program launched Monday By Jessica Simms Special to the Record-Journal

Through its focus on helping area youth, Yes!Academy (Youth Educational Success) will offer students educational support, tutoring, mentoring and youth development programs. The program, which launched Monday, came about as a result of the Make

It Different Foundation, which was founded by Deborah Garner in honor of her late son Taahir “Ty” Harris. Garner, who has always wanted to incorporate mentorship into the foundation’s mission, decided to create the program after looking at educational alternatives for her daughter. “We had made the decision See YES!Academy, A2

Yes!Academy From A1

After Garner realized that the online learning platforms were isolating, she helped organize the Yes!Academy program to give youth academic, social, emotional and psychological support.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Garner said that the space on North Main Street can hold up to 10 to 15 students. The program is geared toward middle and high school students, but is not turning away anyone who needs help. “We’re really trying to design individual plans around what the student’s motiva-

ON THE LEVEL If you are going on vacation and looking forward to running on the beach for exercise, you might want to rethink your plans. While beach sand may seem to be a forgiving surface (compared with paved streets), the fact is that sand is an uneven, inconsistent running surface that transmits irregular forces through the feet, ankles, and hips. Consequently, joints and muscles are vulnerable to injury while running on sand. People who run on sandy beaches are also prone to sprains and tendonitis because beaches slope. Sudden changes from firm, wet, hard-packed sand to loose, dry sand also make running on the beach particularly dangerous. Chiropractors are experts in body mechanics and can help patients understand motion and balance.

Nancy B. Voisine SOUTHINGTONNancy B. Voisine, 65, of Southington passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at the HOCC at New Britain General. She was the loving wife and best friend of Southington Volunteer Firefighter Dean Voisine. Born May 31, 1955 in Waterbury, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Eleanor (Pond) Booth. Nancy was employed by

Pharmacy. Following the 1977 tragic and untimely death of her son, Dougie, Helen redirected a significant amount of her time and attention to her grandchildren. Beyond just giving them her love, she was active and attentive in their lives, which was a gift both ways and helped her deal with her grief. One vivid memory of Helen is from summer vacations, after a day on the beach in Rhode Island with the grandchildren, at 5 pm, with a glass of champagne in hand, surrounded by her giggling grandchildren, throwing pieces of bread to the frantic and squawking seagulls. Early on in their marriage, Doug’s passion for golf was picked up by Helen. Helen loved to play golf, watch men’s and women’s professional golf on television, read about golf, and work to improve her level of play. Many

of her closest friends were golf buddies; in particular, her dear friends from Shuttle Meadow CC. Helen and Doug were longtime, active members at Southington Country Club, Shuttle Meadow Country Club, in Kensington, CT, and Pinecrest Golf Club, in Avon Park, FL. Helen was predeceased by her son, Douglas Driscoll, Jr.; her brother Charles O’Brien and his wife, Lois; Jack O’Brien and his wife, Estelle; and survived by her husband, Douglas Driscoll, Sr.; her daughters, Polly Driscoll Temme and her husband Carl Temme, Robin Palazzo and her husband Larry Palazzo; her grandchildren, Kelly Driscoll Temme and her husband, Louis Loizou, Christopher Palazzo, Lee Douglas Palazzo, Patrick Driscoll Temme, and Daniel Palazzo and his wife Bonnie Smith; her great grandchildren, Londyn Palazzo and Emilia Loizou; and her niece and nephew, Shelley O’Brien and Steven O’Brien. reading this now to do is to simply smile and remember the fond and funny memories. Remember her pieces of advice, the grip of her hand, and the little laugh when she wanted to bring the point home. Nancy enjoyed so many things: The Red Sox, The NY Jets, reading, singing, cooking, shopping, going to the casino and hitting the slots, cruising, living life with Poppy, and was instrumental in creating and nurturing an amazing camping family, whom she loved so very much. Most importantly, her true passion was completely and unapologetically spoiling her grandchildren rotten. She loved them with all her soul, and would do anything to make them happy. If she were here now and could say one thing to you all, it would be, to get along. Live your life and remember that family and the love around it is irreplaceable. Her greatest hope for family is to be together,

supporting each other, and loving each other without restraint. “Open different doors. You may find a you there that you never knew was yours.” - Mary Poppins In addition to her husband she leaves her children, Jason Voisine of Southington, Brandie Villanova and husband Zach of W. Hartford, Amy Gousse and husband Ryan of Southington and Destinee Smith and Jason Lafland of Southington; four grandchildren, Leila, Kyley, Mason and Arlo. She also leaves a sister Beverly Alter and life partner Kathleen Carbone of Sarasota, FL. A celebration of life for Nancy will be held in the summer of 2021. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Ski beat goes on despite a few unpleasantries Skiing in the year of COVID19 is very different than any winter past. Yes, we still glide over snow in a wonderful world of white, but somehow the feeling of wonder is gone. There are skiers all over the mountain, even with the numbers cut in half, but somehow the magic is missing. It is most notable in the lodge. In a cafeteria where there use to be 40 or 50 tables with four chairs at each, there are now only 10 tables

about 12 feet apart and some with only two chairs. Instead of comradeship and conversation with your neighbors about the trails and the conditions of the day, the base lodge is now a lonely place.

I got into the lodge by sort of the back stairs, because I had come from the office area, and was quickly checked in and given a table number with a time limit. Come 3:06 I had to be out in the cold See Skiing, A17

again. It is not a welcoming atmosphere. After the Christmas rain, and a hard freeze, snowmaking again saved the week and conditions were good. Most ski resorts in New England are in almost full operation with uncrowded lifts and lodges due to government regulations. Having to make a parking reservation and pass a check point is entirely new and a bit unnerving. It reminded me of Eastern Europe in the 1970s, “Do you have a pass, comrade.” Sort of a “Big Brother is watching you” feeling, that I hope ends soon. From that Vermont scenario, we came home to a friendlyfeeling mountain. Yes, Connecticut ski areas are limited to half size so the lodges and lifts appear to be almost empty – but you don’t have to go through a check point to get to the parking lot. Last Sunday there were no lift lines at Nutmeg ski resorts and everyone seemed to be happy and having fun.

Because of limited ticket sales reservations are a good idea, so on-line is the best way to guarantee a spot on the lifts. Being a holiday weekend the busiest place on the mountain was the children’s slope and the ski school area. “People are excited to get out and have fun, after almost a year behind walls,” said Jay Dougherty, manager at Mount Southington. “Skiing is a natural for social distancing and a face mask is normal on the mountain.” “We have added picnic tables and heaters on the patio and are creating more boot bag storage in the lodge,” said Dougherty, “and we have food trucks on the property to help with the lack of inside service.” Connecticut ski areas are adjusting to the new regulations, and with the cooperation of Mother Nature, expect to have a great season.
