The owner of the former Evergreen Nursery property is looking to subdivide the land and sell lots for homebuilding. Sami Abunasra bought the
nursery in 2021 at an auction. He’s now looking to convert the eight-acre parcel into 18 different lots, build a road for the subdivision and sell the individual lots. “We will be building the road and then just selling the land for anybody who’s
interested in developing,” Abunasra said. The property at 567 Woodruff St. stretches south in between other housing developments and neighborhoods. If the subdivision is

SOUTHINGTON — State funds provided a $5 million boost to the Southington library building project, allowing an expansion of the facility that’s in the early construction stages.
“The leadership in Hartford has been very generous to Southington,” Poulos said.
The State Bond Commission approved the $5 million spending request at its meeting Sept. 29. State Rep. Chris Poulos, a Democrat representing Southington, said he started working on the request to General Assembly leaders in January. He was glad they agreed it was a need

Southington residents raising money for girl, 3, with brain cancer By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
Friends and family are holding a fundraiser this Sunday in support of a three-yearold town resident fighting an inoperable brain tumor. Emma, daughter of Evan Clemens and Andrea Altman, was diagnosed with
stage four brain cancer in August. Due to the cancer’s location, only radiation can be applied. Ian Ainsworth, a friend and fellow Southington High School graduate of Evan Clemens, said Emma is an exuberant girl who loves her parents and brother and sister.
“She’s always happy, always willing to do anything,” Ainsworth said. He and his wife Ashley Ainsworth and friends Mike and Allyson Nardi have organized a fundraiser scheduled for Sunday.

Secure Your Credit Card Processing Account
Securing your personal and business financial information is increasingly challenged by the increase in deceptive operatives to steal your identity and gain access to deplete your accounts. One of the benefits of becoming a Chamber member is the immediate connection among all industries to share specific information that impacts your ability to grow your business and to protect your business and employees where necessary. Chamber member Rachel Boucher of Payless Payment Solutions, LLC, recently shared the following new scam of which their company became aware at a Chamber In the Morning Networking Event. Participating in Chamber programming is a great way to connect with leaders in the community, meet potential new customers and clients, and obtain valuable information.
The scam goes as such: Scammer calls a merchant and says they are with your current merchant services/credit card processor. They say they are auditing the account and “found money that should be refunded to you” or “you are out of PCI Compliance” or something else urgent. They ask you to verify your terminal numbers and then tell you they need to send you a new terminal. They blast the merchant with language that is both familiar and unfamiliar and it gets them very confused and flustered. All of a sudden they send emails saying these need to be signed to “get the refund” or “get into compliance” etc etc. What you are signing is a contract for a lease on new equipment and change of your current processing company. If you receive a call such as this HANG UP and immediately
contact the person or company with who you currently conduct business. If you have already signed documents sent to you in an email related to a call like this, call your current provider and have them call the lease company with you and inform them you were bamboozled and that these scammers led you to believe you were dealing with your current processor.
NEVER read the serial number of their terminal to someone calling inbound to you! That is linked to sensitive information including your bank account. PLANTSVILLE Lawrence “Larry” L. Horton, Jr., beloved husband of Betty (Michaud) Horton of Plantsville, died on Friday, Oct. 6th, at the VA Hospital in West Haven, at the age of 73. Larry was born on February 24, 1950 in Rockland, ME and raised by his parents Albert Nason and Cora (Perkins) (Horton) Nason. He enlisted in the US Army and served in Vietnam. He worked most of his life as a diesel mechanic for local companies. Larry was truly a fix it, do it yourself man who would help any of his family or friends at any time. He married into Betty’s large family and became more than a brother-in-law and uncle to them. It was like he was their brother and a grandfather to the nieces and nephews. Larry enjoyed watching NASCAR, snowmobiling and riding his four wheeler. In addition to his wife Betty of 50 years, left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy are his daughter Dawn Champagne, married to Christopher Champagne, his granddaughter Samantha Appelle, and several nieces and
nephews. He is also survived by a brother and a sister and Betty’s 8 siblings. Larry was predeceased by his daughter Monica who passed during infancy, as well as his parents, 2 sisters and a brother and Betty’s parents and 2 brothers. Larry’s family would like to thank the amazing nurses and doctors at the VA for the support and care they provided to him. A private graveside service was held at the CT Veteran’s Cemetery in Middletown. Connecticut has required its cities and towns to offer property tax relief to veterans since the latter days of Civil War Reconstruction. But at some point over time, that relief became far too meager, according to Sen. Cathy Osten, D-Sprague, one of two southeastern Connecticut lawmakers hoping to boost relief up to $2,000 per qualifying veteran.
And with the nation’s population of veterans steadily shrinking, greater tax relief may be essential to ensure military retirees remain in Connecticut, Osten said. “It’s a respect issue for me, of finally recognizing what men and women do for our country,” the Sprague lawmaker said. “We decided a long time ago that this was something that veterans deserved.”

For example, property currently assessed at $350,000 in a town with a tax rate of 30 mills — a mill raises $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of assessed value — would generate $10,500 in revenue.
Reducing that assessment by $1,000 to $349,000 would save the veteran owner $30. Osten noted that many municipalities voluntarily increase the exemption upward as high as $6,000, but that still generally translates into savings of a few hundred dollars per veteran. “It’s pennies on the dollar,” said Rep. Maloney continued its reign at the Meriden City Cross Country Championships last week at Hubbard Park, and leading the way was Griffin DePalma. The senior defended his individual boys crown handily, putting nearly two minutes between himself and the rest of the field. DePalma pushed himself, shattering his previous 5K best by 30 seconds with a time of 17:35.
The Wildcats snapped out of a brief skid and got back in the win column last week with Connecticut Technical Conference victories over Wolcott Tech and Bullard-Havens. They scored 7 goals on the week. Katherine Arichavla had 5 of them. Wilcox Tech’s veteran senior forward connected four times at Wolcott Tech and once vs. Bullard to boost her team-high total to 17.

After missing the preseason, Amari Robinson has gotten back up to cruising altitude for the Platt Panthers. The senior wide receiver has 18 receptions for 215 yards and is also lending his speed and elusiveness to the run game as quarterback in the Wildcat formation. Robinson had three touchdowns — two rushing, one receiving — in last week’s 38-8 victory over Rocky Hill.
My, my, my, what a season Mya Pereira is having for Lyman Hall soccer. Heading into Monday night’s game at North Haven, the junior was leading the Trojans in scoring with 14 goals and four assists. Goal No. 14 came in Friday’s upset bid in Middletown vs. Mercy. Pereira converted a feed from Lucia Pires in the 50th minute to pull LH to within 2-1 before the unbeaten Tigers held on.

Like any strong defensive unit, it’s awfully hard to single out one guy from the Cheshire football D. 11 hats to the ball, right? This past week, there was one hat consistently behind the line of scrimmage, and it belonged to Evan Russo. The senior defensive end piled up 5½ sacks in Cheshire’s 41-0 win over Hamden. That raised Russo’s state-high total to 11 on the season.
That 0-2 start to the season for the Southington girls soccer team certainly is a distant memory. The Lady Knights beat Glastonbury, Tolland and Enfield last week to run their winning streak to nine and their record to 9-2-0. On offense, SHS has been led by Taylor Walwyn. The junior scored in each of last week’s games to push her team-high total to seven goals on the year.
