Southington veterans recognized at last in Washington honor flight

It’s a typical Wednesday night at Plainville High School with the exception of one classroom. Dad Shamar Marion is in the room, seated and smiling, holding his equally smiley three-month-old son, Kyson.

Together they are the “stars of the show,” as they hold court for a classroom of dads-to-be. The men in the room are all here for a reason: Bootcamp for New Dads. The program was founded more than three decades ago by Greg Bishop, a dad and grandfather himself, who saw that new dads could use an assist. After teaching his program for many years at a local hospital, he created a non-profit, New Fathers Foundation, and took the program to a national platform. In the U.S., there are an estimated 75 million fathers. The importance of having a father involved in childrearing cannot be understated. According to the National

Veterans who took part in an honor flight to Washington, D.C. this fall described the send-off and thanks they never got after leaving the service. Those veterans included five members of the same family, all of whom were at a veterans’ coffee hour held on Nov. 17 at the Calendar House senior center.

New Council majority to focus on MSP renovations The Plainville Town Council is eyeing the future, with a new Democratic majority in place and the issue of renovations at the Middle School of Plainville in the offing. The newly-elected Chair of the Town Council, Democrat Christopher Wazorko, said
that he was encouraged by the 30% registered voter turnout on Nov. 7, for the municipal election that saw his party flip the Council to their favor. “It has been several years – more than 10 I believe – since we broke the 30 percent threshold,” Wazorko said. “Our team focused on
voter turnout in this election, and it was encouraging that we had a tangible response to this focus.” Plainville Democratic Town Committee Chair and Vice Chair to the Town Council, Rebecca Martinez, believes the reason the Democrats were able to take supermajority was due to issues surrounding Middle School of Plainville (MSP) and the delay of the Renovate Like New plan. She said that on the campaign trail the Democratic committee kept hearing from citizens of Plainville who wanted to be heard, and who felt previous leadership had not listened to their concerns.

Wazorko said that MSP will be at the top of that priority list for the Town Council. “We are excited for the new term and have several projects we will want to move forward with right away,” Wazorko said. “We will look to set a referendum for a Renovate Like New question in late winter, early spring. That process (starts) with a joint special meeting between the Board of Education and Town Council on Nov. 29 at the High School.” Denehy, said that another immediate issue at hand is the residency requirements for the Town Manager. “Currently, the charter is unambiguous stating the Town Manager shall reside in Plainville. Considering the COVID federal funding to the schools expires next year, a serious financial impact is imminent,” she said.

Dawn Miceli said it was a meaningful trip for the entire family to have the service of so many of their relatives recognized. “It was really cool that they all got to experience it together,” she said. CyberKnights host robotics competition The CyberKnights, Southington’s High School Robotics team, organized and hosted a FIRST Lego League Qualification Competition on Saturday, Nov. 18, at DePaolo Middle School in Southington. The event brought 23 teams of students Grades 4-8 from across Connecticut, to showcase the spirit of innovation, collaboration, and robotics in the state.

Treasures of Children’s Room to be discussed on Dec. 9 On Saturday December 9th, with a snow date of Dec. 10, the Plainville Historical Society will host “Treasures of the Children’s Room” at 1 p.m. followed by a Holiday Open House 2 to 4 p.m. at the Plainville Historic Center, 29 Pierce Street.

Seeing the value in the Bootcamp for New Dads program, Adult and Continuing Education Coordinator Jill O’Brien brought the program to PHS in 2021 with a grant received from the Men and Boys’ Fund at the Main Street Community Foundation. The class program educator is Gary Smith, who is referred to as “the coach.” A father and grandfather himself, he has been teaching the one-night course for almost two years.

Phyllis B. Fryzel
SCHENECTADY, NY Immacolata Brino, 97, formerly of Southington, CT, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. She was born and raised in Sant’Agata de’Goti, Italy. In 1966, she immigrated to Southington, where she raised her family and worked for JJ Ryan. She moved to Schenectady in 2020. Immacolata loved being outside, where she would garden, take walks, and do yard work. She loved helping others and enjoyed watching Mass, Wheel of Fortune, and movies on the Hallmark Channel. She was predeceased by her parents, Giuseppe and Elisabetta Della Ratta Mauro; her husband, Rinaldo Brino; and her siblings, Clementina, Clemente, Tommaso, Alessandro, Mario, and Vincenzo. Immacolata is survived by her children, Mary (Giovanni) Sgueglia, Gina (John) Ganther, and Pasquale (Linda) Brino; her grandchildren, John (Amy), Lisa, Cristina (Jason), John David, Nicholas, James, and Andrew; her greatgrandchildren, Gianna, Niara, Alex, Nadia, Chris, Arianna, Aiden; her sister, Genoeffa; and many nieces and nephews.
SOUTHINGTON - With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our adored mother and grandmother, Phyllis (Buczko) Fryzel, 95, of Southington, Connecticut. Phyllis passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on November 11, 2023. She was the beloved wife of the late Edwin Fryzel for 38 years. Phyllis was born on July 13, 1928 in Bristol, Connecticut, to the late Michael and Mary (Osenkowski) Buczko and had been a longtime Southington resident. Phyllis’ early years were filled with the simple joys of music and the thrill of ice skating at Page Park. She enthusiastically pursued her artistic passion, studying at the School of Fashion Design in Boston, where she mastered the art of sewing on her way to becoming a skilled seamstress. She later channeled her entrepreneurial spirit into running her own fabric store, also sharing her love of quilting as an instructor. Phyllis was a longtime parishioner at the Immaculate Conception Church, blending her faith and Polish heritage. She was active in both the Holy Rosary Society and the Immaculate Women’s Club, having led the latter as a past president. Phyllis was a true matriarch whose life was a testament to the power of unconditional love and selfless devotion. She was the cornerstone of our family, offering a boundless love that knit us closer together through every joy and hardship. Her wisdom guided us, her strength inspired us, and her warmth comforted us. She demonstrated a life of

C.C.P. Presents series to offer ‘A Holiday Concert’
Obituaries Thomas R. Theriault SOUTHINGTON Thomas R. Theriault, 96, of Southington, CT, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at HOCC at New Britain. He was the beloved husband of Wanda (Sroka)Theriault, who predeceased him in 1983. Thomas was born on March 23, 1927 in Milldale, CT, to the late Charles and Florence (Clark) Theriault and had been a lifelong Southington resident. Tom proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked for the Southington Highway Department, retiring after 37 years of service. He was a longtime parishioner at St. Dominic’s Church in Southington and a member of the American Legion, Kiltonic Post 72. Thomas is survived by his son, John Theriault of East Haven, one brother, James Theriault and his wife Anne of Southington, one sister, Joan King of Glastonbury, brother-in-law, Donald Dorman of Forestville, sister-in-law, Josephine Theriault of Plantsville and several nieces and nephews.
