Hosting an autism awareness tournament at the beginning of this year’s season, all the proceeds from the game were used to purchase additional materials for their special education program, which the district’s budget otherwise

Early retirement takes a lot of planning

fund it.

Do you want to retire early?

As a financial advisor, I have seen firsthand how much planning it takes to do it. Deciding to leave the workforce (and say goodbye to your steady paycheck) earlier than you previously intended to may come with many considerations. If you are intrigued by the idea of retiring early, read on for some suggestions for how to assess if moving your retirement date forward is something within your reach.

1. Define your dream retirement. A realistic early retirement plan doesn’t happen by chance. It takes careful planning and deliberate action. Before you can figure out how to make early retirement a viable option, take time to envision the kind of life you want to lead when you leave your primary career. Where will you live? What kind of activities do you plan to pursue? These are the types of questions that will help you define what you want your retirement to be like.

2. Quantify your goal. Many retirees find they spend more money in the early years of retirement because they have more time to travel and pursue hobbies. If this aligns with your retirement vision, be generous in your estimate of how much money you need each year. Once you have an estimate of how much it will cost, you will be better able to map the steps you’ll need to take to save enough money to

3. Decide which income source to tap into first. Once you know how much your early retirement will cost, you’ll want to line up the order in which you will tap into your investments. How much income you need, the tax treatment of your investments, and the timing of when you’ll take Social Security are all factors to consider as you map out how you will create a paycheck in retirement.

4. Adjust your saving and spending today. Once you have a clear idea of how much your dream retirement will cost, you can evaluate the potential tradeoffs and sacrifices necessary to make it happen. This will likely require reducing spending while maximizing the amount you are saving.

5. Continue investing for growth. It’s common for retirees to adjust their investment allocation to be more conservative in order to protect their principal from potential market downturns or increased volatility. While this may make sense for some, it’s important for your portfolio to at least keep on pace with inflation. After all, retirement can easily last several decades. Even modest inflation can make a meaningful impact over that timeframe. Factoring inflation into your projections can help you maintain your purchasing power throughout retirement.

6. Don’t overlook health care expenses. Many retirees are surprised by how much of their budget goes toward medical expenses. Don’t be

one of them. Make finding health insurance a top priority. And, consider the pros and cons of purchasing long-term care insurance.

7. Be flexible. In life and investing, there are no guarantees. Unexpected events can happen any time, and many have financial implications. Think about what your options are if your savings come up short, such as adjusting your retirement date, spending or perhaps picking up a part- time job, and make sure you have the right insurance in place to cover your various assets.

Retiring early is a big dream. If you want help deciding if or how moving your retirement date forward is realistic for you, meet with a financial advisor. Together you can review your goals, investments, risk tolerance and other factors to help you make retirement decisions with confidence.

derway, teachers were enthusiastic about the new equipment and the opportunities it has to enhance the learning environment for students with special needs in the coming years.

“I just wanna say thank you on behalf of the district, the teachers, for helping to figure out what could be used that’s for the best for the program. We truly appreciate it. It’s a great gesture and it’s definitely a good testament to the community,” said Superintendent Steven

Madancy, as he and the teachers received the materials outside Hatton at the end of August, before classes resumed for the new year. Who is donating the material?

The autism awareness tournament was organized earlier this year by CT Lightning softball coach Steve Wright. A Southington resident, Wright has a child with specialized needs who attended Hatton 19 years ago and a wife who teaches in the building. After receiving what he believed to be foundational care during his son’s developmental years, Wright thought about ways

he might give back to the district.

After discussions with his wife regarding the constant need for material in their classrooms, he organized a fundraiser to purchase the equipment for them coordinating with school officials to get exactly what they needed. It was better than just donating the money directly, Wright said, as he knew that buying and donating the equipment would ensure the teachers got what they needed, rather than it going elsewhere.

“She would come home and we would buy things for school. And I get it. Her bud-

gets are very limited in what you can do, and there’s no possible way you can get everything that these kids need,” Wright said, drawing on the his wife’s experience as a teacher. “So we thought this would be the best way to give the kids exactly what they need. It’s a little personal, my son started here 19 years ago in this program. So it helped us tremendously. I think he’s about as good as we could hope for. We got a tremendous amount of help here, so it hits a little home. So to give back here for everybody, it feels great.”

A collaborative effort

Though Wright is at the forefront of the initiative, he made note that it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of other organizers, the school, and members of the community.

The United States Specialty Sports Association was a major supporter of their effort as the host of the event, along with the 13 different teams of the Southington Girls Softball League, who all came together to raise money as part of the tournament. After the success of this year’s event, Wright hopes to make it an annual event and gift of supplies to the district.

“Everybody was a part,” he said. “So it’s a pretty special thing. It hits home with a lot more people than people understand, everybody knows someone with special needs, whether directly or indirectly somebody knows somebody. So it’s something that’s easy to get behind.”

of items donated to the program, large and small. The most expensive item was a light table, a high-dollar sensory item that plays music, with lights on its surface that illuminate in multiple sequences and colors. It’s beneficial to many special needs children, who are in need of sensory items that aid their learning.

Many of the other items fall into a similar category, each one providing different sensory enrichment from color pads with moving liquid underneath to a distortion mirror, an inflatable cow, and more. There are other items too like compression blankets, which help calm some students when they need it.

“They may only have a certain amount of money to buy. You have to have essentials, and in a typical classroom, essentials may be OK to continue and teach and do what you have to do for your job. In a special needs environment, it needs to go above and beyond that because there are individual needs,” Wright said. “There’s not a specific thing that may help one student or another. So there’s a long list of things and the budget can’t handle that.”

“We would love, love, love to be able to fully fund every wish, need. And the reality is we can’t,” added Colleen Clark, chair of the Board of Education. “This is what makes Southington such a wonderful community. It’s folks like you giving back because you had a good experience, your family had a

good experience, and you’re giving back. That’s why we do what we do.”

Special education’s importance in Southington

The school board has been proactive in trying to invest in special education programming over the last few years. A study, conducted by the Board of Education last year, found that the school system saved thousands of dollars by investing in programming in-district, rather than having to send children to receive outside services. The school system made an effort to continue building on programming and retaining paraeducators in the sys-

tem.

With the help of members of the community, the district

hopes to continue to build on the services provided for students of all ages.

Spirits of the Swamp: An abandoned bayou village that is plagued with lingering black magic - filled with spirits and other monsters plaguing the ruins that seek to drag visitors down into the swamp forever.

Those who attended last year’s Phantom Fall Fest may find the names of the different mazes familiar, as they’re all returning themes

from the previous scare mazes. Despite that, the park has been working hard to completely overhaul and give them a facelift from the previous year, taking into account feedback from guests, adding even more props and elaborate scares. Each maze takes anywhere between 10-15 minutes to

walk though, on average. With assistance from more local companies to help with props and costumes, the park officials state that all the staff are enthusiastic about putting on a better show for this year.

“Everybody is so excited. It's one of their favorite events,

and we definitely have a lot of team members that get into the whole moment and they just become the whole event. Everyone's excitement really adds to the success of the program,” Marketing Director Meg Forno said.

She was born in Waterbury, and from the start, her life was her family. She often reflected that she was helping raise family since she left the womb, helping alongside her sister Margie with her brothers and sisters from a very early age. Her storied childhood growing up with her expanding family on the second floor of their Harpers Ferry Road home took her through her years at Anderson Grammar School and Wilby High, where she graduated in 1958.

She welcomed Lori into the world and committed at the same time to her pursuit of her Nursing License at Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1961 and then worked proudly as a nurse, times she so often reminisced about throughout her life. She formed friendships during her work as a nurse that she would keep through her whole life, sharing lunch gatherings with the tight knit group right to this day. Her friend

She left her nursing career to devote her heart and soul to her family, building the foundation of her life upon countless traditions, holiday celebrations, family vacations and, most importantly, the endless gatherings arranged simply to share family, food and love. While committing her life to loving her family, she found so much beauty and joy sharing the creations of her many interests, hobbies and talents, including cooking her famous pasta sauce, baking delicious Italian cookies and desserts and hosting countless picnics and gatherings that she thoroughly enjoyed. She loved sewing and crafts, making her own clothes for many years, making dresses for her family’s weddings and special occasions, writing storybooks about her family and her life and building doll houses from scratch for her family to cherish as personalized heartfelt decorations. Her creative talents extended to her work at her fatherin-law’s flower shop, Gilbert’s Florist in New Britain and at Flowers by Sharp in Plainville, and she beautifully arranged the flowers throughout many years for weddings and special events for her children, family members and friends. She also worked proudly for several years as the office manager of her children’s local accounting practice. Throughout her life, she enjoyed years of travel with her family, including venturing throughout Europe, visits to meet relatives in Italy, trips to the Caribbean Islands, journeys through the United States and always arranging very special Cape Cod and Rhode Island cottage vacations packed with family, food, music, beach time and nightly gatherings to simply relax and enjoy time together with her loved ones. Her commitment to her family extended to compassionate caregiving, caring for her mother Vera and her precious daughter Lori throughout their extended, difficult illnesses and up through their passings. Her life and the lives of her family were never the same after Lori’s passing, and it was the bonds of love she had formed with her family that gave her and all her family the strength to move forward.

PLANTSVILLE - “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.” Marie M. (Crisci) Burleigh, 76, of the Plantsville section of Southington, got her wings in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family and her vast array of Christmas teddy bears on Sunday, September 17, 2023. She was the beloved widow of the late Richard Burleigh who passed away in 2009. Marie was born in New Haven on December 7, 1946 and was the daughter of the late Dominick and Michelina (Demarzo) Crisci. She graduated from Southern CT State College with her Master’s degree and retired from Hartford Health Care where she was a Medicare specialist. Marie was a social butterfly who made many friends while working out at the Southington YMCA and volunteering for the Southington Bread for Life, The Bushnell Theater, the Alzheimer’s Center, and the Ladies Guild of St. Aloysius Church where she was a long-time parishioner. She also was a devout donor of blood to the Red Cross. When she had free time, you could find Marie knitting afghans, coloring, reading books from the Book Club, watching Christmas movies or listening to Christmas music. But most of all, she loved to spend time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren who will miss her terribly. Marie is survived by her two children, Scott Burleigh and his wife Jill of Southington and Linda Burleigh and her partner

park, with those who find them all being given a prize.

Seasonal snacks for kids and adults will also be offered throughout the park during the festival

To park officials, offering so many activities atop having their rides operating is important to bringing guests out to the park and offering something of value for general visitors and season pass holders year long - atop getting people to choose their venue over many of the other local attractions vying for attention over the holiday season.

“We are competing with a lot of other local events in that regard. We’re just making sure that we're thinking about everyone, so we added some daytime activities for the little kids to make sure that they could enjoy the park during the day, and also experience those Halloween themed events even if it's not dark and scary. But then really pumping up the thrills and chills at night to really bring this experience to a higher level,” Forno said.

Mike Soltys, Former ESPN Communications Vice President to Moderate 2023 Southington Town Council Candidate Forum on October 19

The Greater Southington Chamber of Commerce 2023 Annual Meet the Candidates Forum will be led by Mike Soltys, who recently retired from ESPN after a successful 43-year career as vice president of communications.

This year’s event will take place on Thursday, October 19 from 6 to 9 p.m., at Hawk’s Landing Country Club. A recording of the event will be available on Southington TV.

“We are honored to have Mike Soltys join us to moderate this event,” stated Barbara Hekeler, President & CEO, Southington Chamber of Commerce. “Having worked in the media industry for several decades positions Mike perfectly for this role.”

Soltys was the third longest-tenured employee at ESPN. He is well admired by colleagues as well as thousands of people with whom he engaged throughout his career.

Mike and his wife, Teresa,

have lived in Southington since 1995. They have four children. His oldest daughter, Katie, is a science teacher at JFK. Mike currently serves as Board Chair at Bread For Life, and is on the board of Youth Journalism International.

The Chamber has hosted annual candidate forums since the early 1990s. As a non-partisan, non-sectarian organization the Chamber does not align with any party or endorse candidates. All businesses and organizations are invited to apply for Chamber membership.

Invited participants this year include all candidates running for a seat on Southington’s Town Council. The forum provides a friendly and fair format for participating candidates. Questions are submitted anonymously by the voting public to the Chamber office in the weeks leading up to the event and are not disclosed to anyone, including the moderator, until that evening. On the evening of the forum the moderator will

unseal the container securing the questions in front of the audience.

As in the past, candidates who are unable to participate due to illness or scheduling conflicts are given the opportunity to have the moderator read an opening statement that must follow forum rules and guidelines.

“This is not a debate so there is no rebuttal”, explained Hekeler. “People want to know a candidate’s position and what they plan to do to assure an economically healthy and vibrant community.”

Doors open at 6 p.m., the program begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public. To register or to submit a question visit southingtonchamber.com or email info@ southingtonchamber.com

CA executive director. “It’s been a really nice tradition.”

Here are four things to know about the Apple Harvest Road Races:

Something for everyone

For the competitive runners, there’s the classic 5-mile race, the popular 5k race and the 5k Chamber Corporate Cup. Myers said prizes will be handed out for breaking records in those races.

Middle school runners can compete in their own 5k race as well. There’s also the Y-Cup for fourth- and fifthgrade runners. Kids ages 2 to 7 looking to participate can take part in the Little Fritters Fun Run.

Those looking to do the route at an easier pace can take part in the Healthy 2Mile Walk.

Participants can sign up for any of these races at https:// tinyurl.com/5ed3s82k.

A color run at the Apple Harvest Festival for the first time

For the road races’ 44th year, Myers said the YMCA is starting a color run on the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail for 100 participants.

The YMCA partnered with Southington Community Cultural Arts for the run, which is already sold out.

“The participants will get hit with paint packets and get all colored up,” Myers said.

With the first year, YMCA leaders wanted to limit the runners to 100. He expects future years will have a higher capacity.

“In the first year, we wanted to make sure we were going to do it right,” Myers said.

Thousands of runners, volunteers and spectators

Judging from previous years, Myers expects between 1,500 and 1,600 participants in the

various races. The finish line in front of the First Congregational Church on the Town Green will also be lined with the family and friends of those running.

“It’s amazing how many people watch the finish down there,” Myers said. “It’s a community gathering. If it’s nice weather, people aren’t leaving. They’re milling around, catching up with one another.”

It takes hundreds of volunteers to pull it off Wendy Stevens of the YMCA is in charge of gathering volunteers. She needs about 250 people doing everything from handing out waters to

directing traffic on the race route to registering runners. About 50 volunteers come from the Southington High School cross country program every year. Those youth help manage the race course. It’s a relationship that Myers helped establish years ago.

“He’s a runner himself, his kids grew up in Southington,” Stevens said.

Similar to runners returning year after year, Stevens said there are volunteers with many years of service under their belts.

“There’s definitely people who volunteer every year

and who look forward to this and who we can count on,” she said. “I know there’s ones I can automatically start slotting in. We definitely see that as a tradition that’s going on.”

Stevens also sees multiple generations of volunteers and parents get their kids interested in helping out. There’s always room for more hands on race day, though.

“I will find a slot for them to help. We definitely don’t turn people away. We can always use volunteers.”

To volunteer, contact Stevens at wstevens@sccymca.org.

Seasonal flu vax available at Stop & Shop

Stop & Shop has announced that seasonal flu vaccinations are once again available at its more than 70 pharmacy locations across Connecticut for both adults and children aged five-orolder. In addition to flu shots, Stop & Shop is also offering the newly approved RSV, respiratory vaccine to those 60 and older. Eligible customers can receive immunizations for both the flu and RSV during the same pharmacy visit, as the CDC has indicated that these vaccines may be administered

alongside each other. Vaccinations are administered by Stop & Shop’s trained & trusted pharmacists and are at no-cost with most insurance plans.

Stop & Shop offers several types of flu vaccines, and its team of licensed pharmacists can help each patient select the type that is best for them. Stop & Shop pharmacists will help customers by addressing concerns about allergies, preservatives, or potential side effects. In addition to flu shots,

customers aged five and older in need of a COVID-19 vaccine or bivalent booster can receive both the flu and COVID-19 vaccine at once per the CDC, with no need for a waiting period. Stop & Shop pharmacies have an ample supply of Bivalent COVID-19 vaccines for eligible patients available at nocost with most insurance plans. An updated COVID19 vaccine, that Stop & Shop will offer, is anticipated later this fall.

In addition, Stop & Shop

pharmacists are experienced in screening for risk factors associated with various health conditions and providing immunization support to help protect against shingles, RSV, pneumonia, and tetanus. Customers should consult their local Stop & Shop pharmacist for a full immunization review and to discuss other important immunizations that can help keep them, their families, and the community healthy.

“The health of our commu-

nity is of utmost importance to Stop & Shop, and we welcome everyone to come and meet with one of our specially trained, dedicated pharmacists about flu shots and other immunizations,” shares Katie Thornell, Director of Pharmacy at Stop & Shop. “It’s never too early to start taking preventative measures to stay healthy, and we are happy to offer the flu shot as well as COVID-19 boosters, RSV, pneumonia, and shingles vaccinations. We are wellstocked and offer same-day immunizations, either by appointment or simply walking in. Stop & Shop aims to make it easy for everyone to get the care they need to keep themselves and their loved ones healthy.”

Stop & Shop takes extensive health and safety precautions at its pharmacies and has secured additional stock of the flu vaccine. The immunization area also has strict disinfecting and sanitization measures in place between each patient.

To find a Stop & Shop Pharmacy near you, to view which vaccine is available in your local Stop & Shop Pharmacy, or to schedule an immunization appointment, visit www.stopandshop.com/pages/ss-pharmacy.

Stepping into another year with steps

Southington’s Town-wide Effort to Promote Success (STEPS) will begin its 16th year next week. Led by Board President, Retired Deputy Chief Bill Palmieri, the group seeks to prevent substance misuse among youth by building Developmental Assets. The assets can be seen as building blocks, providing a firm base of skills, supportive relationships, and pro-social opportunities for young people.

“A major component of our prevention strategy centers around the 40 Developmental Assets which in short state the more assets a youth has, the less likely they are to take part in risky behaviors,” explains Palmieri.

A major component of the Developmental Assets model is building relationships between youth and adults. In a letter to the Board, Palmieri writes: “Effective communication between youth and adults is more than just an exchange of

words; it is a bridge that connects generations and builds mutual understanding. When adults take the time to listen to the voices of the youth, we not only gain insight into their unique perspectives and concerns but also create an environment where they feel seen, heard, and appreciated. This validation boosts their confidence, encourages creativity, and motivates them to actively engage in positive endeavors.”

To read more of Palmieri’s message to the Board, visit bit.ly/3sYAKS2 Palmieri, a lifelong resident of Southington and an officer with Southington Police for 38 years, has made it his mission to create an Asset Building Community in town. This means that all kids will get the same assetcentered messages from the grown ups they interact with, from their parents and coaches to teachers and police officers.

Strong relationships between youth and “trusted adults” is the cornerstone of STEPS’ work. Palmieri emphases that an Asset Building Community will “foster a culture of empathy and understanding, where every voice is heard and respected.”

One way this idea has come to life is through the brand new prevention curriculum, Communities Creating Change (C3), conceptualized by STEPS’ Youth Prevention Coordinator Megan Albanese and created in partnership with Charge Ahead Marketing.

Last year, the first class of over 500 fifth grade students in Southington went through the eight lessons of the curriculum, taught by dedicated Asset Building Officers from the Southington PD. The officers continue to build relationships with the schools they have been assigned to and are preparing

for another year of C3 to begin soon.

This year, STEPS will continue to expand the reach of its Asset Building Community by providing resources to businesses, student-athletes and their parents, and civic groups. The coalition will also continue the roll out of its new online library of learning modules called STEPS to Know More. These online quizzes and videos are meant to be quick, accessible prevention lessons for youth and adults alike.

“We are in an era of rapid change and progress [and] our youth face unique challenges and opportunities that require careful attention and support,” writes Palmieri. If you would like to get involved in continuing STEPS’ mission of making prevention and positive youth development a priority in the Southington community, email southingtonsteps@gmail.com.

SARAH BECKERT

SHEEHAN VOLLEYBALL

Though Sarah Beckert was just a sophomore last year, the Sheehan volleyball team sorely missed her services when she went down with a season-ending injury. Back to full health as a junior, Beckert has the Titans off to a 5-1 start a year after they finished 4-16. The quick jump in 2023 has included a sweep of Lyman Hall that featured 9 assists, 8 aces and 6 digs by Beckert.

ELLIE MADANCY

LYMAN HALL SOCCER

All hail to the playmakers. In a sport like soccer, they are the ones who keep the wheel in spin. For Lyman Hall, that girl is Ellie Madancy. The sophomore midfielder scored the first goal in Friday’s season-opening 9-0 win over Wilbur Cross, then dished five assists. “Assists” and “Madancy” often appear in the same sentence. Madancy is also the point guard for LH basketball.

ERIN SOLA

PLATT CROSS COUNTRY

In both cross country and track, Erin Sola has amassed an impressive body of work in her first three years at Platt, including a 10th-place finish at the CIAC Heptathlon this spring. This fall, she launched her final season of cross country winning a tri-meet with Plainville and Bristol Central at Hubbard Park. Sola covered the 3.1-mile circuit in 21:23. Watch for that time to drop.

VOTE AND WIN!

C.J. DIBENEDETTO SOUTHINGTON FOOTBALL

One thing’s for sure: Heading into their Friday night showdown with Staples, Southington football knows it can throw the ball. C.J. DiBenedetto, Southington’s second-year quarterback, opened his senior season with a pair of 300-yards-plus games: 398 in Week 1 vs. New Britain and 330 this Sunday at Wethersfield. DiBenedetto is a combined 47for-70 with six touchdowns.

DONTE KELLY MALONEY FOOTBALL

We’ve got a hunch Donte Kelly could be Athlete of the Week every week and that maybe we should save him for later in the football season or in basketball or track. Well, we’re not waiting. Kelly certainly hasn’t. In the first two weeks of football, the senior caught 12 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns and returned two kicks for scores as the No. 3 Spartans opened 2-0.

MATT JEFFERY CHESHIRE FOOTBALL

What we just said about Donte Kelly goes for Matt Jeffery, too. The All-American lacrosse player bound for Notre Dame is giving thought to walking on in football when he gets to South Bend. Why not? Jeffery, like Kelly, ranks as one of CT’s best to start the 2023 football season. Jeffery scored five touchdowns as Cheshire beat Ridgefield and Shelton to rise to No. 5 in the state poll.
