Pandemic pets Pet purchase and adoption rose during the pandemic. Ann Marie Conaty, the group’s board vice president and an animal control volunteer, said the situation has changed with the economic slump.

Janet Mellon, Southington Community Services director, said the rise in food prices has also hit pet food. “I say ‘ouch’ when I leave the store,” she said. Mellon was excited about

the friends group and the prospect of additional pet food to provide to struggling residents. While Community Services hasn’t run out of pet food recently, there have been times that supplies were very low. Two of Mellon’s volunteers have been buying pet food to prevent stocks from disappearing. “I think this’ll make a big difference,” Mellon said of the Friends of Southington Animal Control. More information about the group can be found at facebook.com/SouthingtonFOSAC.

“We had no pets available during COVID. What’s happening now is that people are starting to surrender their pets because they’re struggling feeding their pets, let alone themselves,” Conaty said. That’s a loss for pet owners, who have to part with what may be an emotional support, as well as the pets that are then shuffled to the pound and then another home. Friends of Animal Control’s mission is to keep pets with their owners at home. “That’s really good emotionally for people too,” she said. “Plus for the animals, you don’t want to see them in a shelter.”

Food drives, fundraisers

“This is why we started it. You’re very limited in what you can and can’t get from people if you don’t have a 501(c)3,” Conaty said. “Now we can raise funds and do what we need to do.” Lukonis said the Animal Control facility on Woodruff Street acts as the group’s

The group formed after Animal Control volunteers saw the need for pet food but were limited in what they could do as part of a town department. Earlier this year, they formed the non-profit friends group to collect money.

For a few hours Sunday morning, lower Center Street traveled back in time and brought a traditional Catholic Mass to town, making those in attendance feel like they were in a small village in Italy.

Antonietta Barbato read a passage from Psalm 90, and later on, she sang Ave Maria. There also was a moment of silence in memory of those who have died. A collection was taken during the Mass that will be distributed to Southington churches.

Hundreds of local families joined Aniello after the Mass for a downtown procession. Aniello led the procession with the Sons of Italy as they carried the Blessed Mother statute around the block to celebrate their Italian heritage and to carry on with a piece of an old tradition.

“They do this every year around this time. Since COVID came around, they couldn’t do it for a year or two,” Salzillo said. “So this is just so fantastic that they were able to bring it back.” Salzillo said she has been coming for the last five years

with her family, and her favorite part of the weekend is the procession. “My favorite part is the procession and seeing the old Italian tradition here in Southington, where the men are carrying the statue on their shoulders,” Salzillo said. After the procession was the start of the last day of the weekend-long festivities.

Library program: ‘A Nation of Descendants’ author talk Press Release

The Southington Public Library will host professor and author Francesca Morgan via Zoom on Thursday, Aug. 18. An associate professor of history at Northeastern Illinois University, Morgan will discuss her new book, “A Nation of Descendants: Politics and the Practice of Genealogy in U.S. History.” From family trees written in early American Bibles to “birther” conspiracy theories, genealogy has al-

ways mattered in the United States, whether for taking stock of kin when organizing a family reunion or drawing on membership – by blood or other mean – to claim rights to land, inheritances, and more. And since the advent of DNA kits that purportedly trace genealogical relations through genetics, millions of people have used them to learn about their medical histories, biological parentage and ethnic background. “A Nation of Descendants” traces

Americans’ fascination with tracking family lineage through three centuries. It examines how specific groups throughout history grappled with finding and recording their forebears, focusing on Anglo-American white, Mormon, African-American, Jewish and Native American people. Morgan also describes how individuals and researchers use genealogy for personal and scholarly purposes, and explores how businesspeople, companies like Ances-

Why Nursing Homes Are Not Always Necessary "Aging in place" is a term that is used to describe the ability for people to remain in their homes for as long as possible as they age. This includes access to services that help them as their needs change with time. Aging in place is a valid alternative for many people who do not want to consider nursing homes for the future, but it does require some planning. Here are some things to consider. •

Where will you live? There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to where you will live as you age in place. Is your home all on one level? Stairs can be a challenge as your body ages. Are the bathroom and kitchen accessible or able to be modified if necessary?

Vote for us as your favorite pharmacy! •

Who will be your caretakers? Do you have family that you can rely on? What about medical care? If you can no longer drive, how will you get around to run errands or go to important appointments?

How will you pay for it? Social Security, retirement planning and long-term care insurance can all be pieces of the puzzle that can help you stay in your own home as you age. Talk with a financial planner early on to set up a plan of action for the future.

Who is your support system? Aging in place requires more than medical and transportation support. Emotional health is also important, as loneliness is an epidemic among many seniors who live alone. Have a social support system in place.

FOOT PAIN Foot problems and pain are common, and almost everyone will experience them at some point in their lives. After all, the feet bear the impact of a person’s entire body weight striking the ground thousands of times every day. This can easily damage the bones, nerves, muscles, tendons, and ligaments and cause significant pain. While foot pain isn’t always preventable, the good news is that chiropractic care, with its natural, holistic approach, can be effective treatment in pain management. Those suffering from Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, arthritis, ankle sprains, and flat feet can particularly benefit from seeing a skilled chiropractor. Treatment may include posture adjustments, measuring legs to make sure they are equal in length, and specific at-home exercises. Foot pain is not always preventable, but the good news is that chiropractic care can make it short-lived.

Bailey Family Funeral Homes director gets national recognition for efforts By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

WALLINGFORD — Matthew Bailey, the fourth generation owner of a local funeral home, has been recognized in a national trade publication as their Funeral Director of the Year. Bailey, president of Bailey Family Funeral Homes, said the recognition in the American Funeral Director magazine is an honor and has been a humbling experience.

LCOMB HO

“It was a nice recognition for myself and my entire team at our funeral homes … because much of what I do wouldn't be possible without their hard work and support on the homefront,” Bailey said. His firm operates B.C. Bailey Funeral Home in Wallingford, as well as locations in Plainville, Southbury and Waterbury. Stan Goldstein, associate editor for the publication, said they received two dozen nominations for Bailey to be their director of the year

from subscribers. From the set of nominations, magazine staff narrowed down a list of a half dozen finalists, among whom Bailey still stuck out. “When I put his name out everybody loved him; he had been so impressive, people had seen him at events, funeral service events and they had always been impressed with him,” Goldstein said of Bailey.

Matthew Bailey, president of Bailey Family Funeral Homes, is American Funeral Director magazine's Funeral Director of the Year for 2021. Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

When choosing its annual director of the year, he said the publication looks for individuals who not only have a strong reputation of guiding families through the loss of a loved one, but also their role in the community their business is rooted in and in the funeral home industry.

On top of running four funeral homes, Bailey is a board member for both the Rotary Club of Wallingford and the Midstate Chamber of Commerce. He’s also served on the boards for the Wallingford Public Library and the Wallingford Foundation.

“This is the stuff we look for — not only that they’re a good funeral home director, but that they’re involved in their community,” Goldstein said. He noted that Bailey has also found creative ways to encourage people to plan See Bailey, A11

humor and laughter. Friends described him as the most unique, independent, and generous human they have ever had the pleasure to know and love. He will always be remembered for the many smiles and selfless contributions that he gave to those around him. In addition to his wife Mary, Bob is survived by his daughter, Joann and her husband Ray Chicoski. sons, Robert Thielman, Jr. and Randy Thielman, and grandchildren, including Jordan, Raymond and Connar Chicoski. He is also survived by his brother, Gene Thielman, sister, Caroline “Midge” Frazier and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Warren, Franklin and James Thielman and his sister, Marcella Frazier. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, Inc., 103 Vision Way, Bloomfield, CT 06002. A celebration of Bob’s life will be scheduled for a future date. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery will be private. Plantsville Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements. For online condolences, please visit www. plantsvillefuneralhome. com.

Being active in associations for funeral homes has also been key to Bailey’s approach to how he runs his own business. Saying that some of the most dangerous words out there are: “We've always done it that way,” he believes that it’s crucial for those in the industry to learn from each other and to provide services relevant to the changing culture. As secular services have become increasingly common and with the majority of people preferring cremation, he said it’s important that those options and more are available. “As we become a more secular society you see it in weddings and funerals ... When it comes to funerals, the path was a little less clear for them and a lot of people thought ‘If I'm not going to have a religious funerals, there aren't a lot of options for me,’” Bailey said, adding that it’s a human constant that a deceased person’s loved ones will have the need to gather, remember, celebrate and support each other. “ … That doesn’t change just because of a person’s faith tradition.” As a board member of the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association, as well as the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service Inc., Bailey said he often does trainings to help share some of what he’s learned with other funeral home staff. If an individual going through the loss of someone close to them has a bad experience, Bailey said it can damage their impression of the whole industry, so it’s important that funeral homes are open and sharing with each other.

Bailey was named the magazine’s director of the year in its December issue and was presented with a plaque from Goldstein at a conference the same month. “There were colleagues in the room and friends as well who I've grown close to over the course of time and even

people I would describe as mentors there ... so it was nice to be in their presence when receiving the award as well,” Bailey said. The most meaningful recognition, however, came from his father, Robert Bailey, whom he went to work for right after completing mortuary science school. He had originally gone to college for political science, however he decided to wanted to join the family business while working at the funeral home one summer and seeing the impact his father had on people lives, putting them

Police investigating determined Rivers was inside the library from around 12 to 3 p.m. and her vehicle was parked in direct sunlight. After 20 deaths, state of Connecticut seeks to prevent wrong-way wrecks Associated Press

HARTFORD — Connecticut plans to install equipment designed to help prevent drivers from going the wrong way down the state’s highways after nearly a dozen wrong-way crashes led to 20 deaths so far this year.

The effort comes as transportation officials nationwide struggle to curtail a surge in fatalities on U.S. roads that began during the coronavirus pandemic. Connecticut’s $20 million planned program would install cameras on wrong-way signs across the state which

will trigger flashing lights when a wrong-way driver is detected. There have been 11 fatal wrong-way accidents this year in the state, resulting in 20 deaths, according to statistics from the the Connecticut Transportation Institute at the University of Connecticut. That’s up from three fatal wrong-way crashes in 2020 and four in 2021, according to the Institute. Officials said about 80 percent of the accidents involved drivers impaired by alcohol or other substances. Gov. Ned Lamont said state police have increased patrols and other enforcement activities in an attempt to curb the problem. “I can guarantee you it is not infrastructure related,” Eric Jackson, the executive director of the Connecticut Transportation Institute, told Hearst Connecticut Media. “The roads and off-ramps See Crashes, A20

THIS SUMMER CELEBRATE AND SURPRISE WITH... • Balloons Bouquet (Our Star Product).

Southington resident Marilyn M. Soper’s familiarity with cancer runs deep. She lost both parents to the disease and has experienced it herself. The ride is a major fundraiser for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber, in Boston, Mass. The event consists of one and two-day routes from 25 to 210 miles. More than 6,00 riders are expected to take part, more than 100 riders are from Connecticut.

1987,” said Soper of the longdistance event. Altogether she has ridden in the event 17 times since her initial ride and has also volunteered a number of times. The history of cancer in her family illustrates the toll this disease can take. Soper lost her mother to lung cancer in 2007, and while not in shape to ride that year, Soper said she did so for another important reason: her goddaughter, Jennifer. When Jennifer was growing up, she spent a good amount of time watching Soper ride on Pan-Mass Challenge events. Jennifer promised that one day, she, too, would ride alongside Soper. Soper was then diagnosed with common variable immune deficiency in 2016. “In the years that I have not physically ridden, I have been a virtual rider and still raised money for the PMC. I am riding this year because of my older sister who had breast cancer in 2019. Altogether there are about 22plus family members who have had cancer, many not here today.” This year Soper acknowledges her training has been “a little off” but she continues to bike multiple times a week with sessions that run from 4-6 hours. She also has a personal trainer, who helps her get into shape.

Soper was just 24 and living in Massachusetts when she began to ride the PMC. Since that time, she’s gone back to school for her bachelor’s of art and master's in English and creative writing. She now tutors and

“I have done several different routes, but I started off doing Sturbridge to P-Town most of the time,” said Soper. That ride is 197 miles. She also completed a team ride, the one-day ride from Sturbridge to Bourne, which is 111 miles. “This year I am riding by myself because my husband Ben, a two-year rider, is too busy, and my goddaughter, Jennifer Cummins, a fouryear rider, is six months pregnant with her second child,” Soper said. This year’s ride will be the "easier" route, said Soper. It runs from Wellesley to Bourne (85 miles).” There’s fewer hills on this one, said Soper. “After all, I am 58 now.”
