OPINION

What’s so special about this month?

So I figured this year I would

I am so excited. I seem to have no control over this. And though I will not be having birthday lunches with my friends – again – there is more to do this time around and I will be doing all I can fit in. In my head there is already a running list. Workshops, a session in the rock salt cavern we have in town, a walk on the beach, shopping at Borrowed Time Emporium, a Reiki session, buying espe-

cially scrumptious food. And, of course, my annual checkerberry soda on my Special Day, to round out the activities. It will be good. Most important is the vow I make to myself as I kick off

this new year for myself – to be happy. To commit to my well-being, every day. You’d think I would have gotten on that long ago. Oh, I have tried, believe me. But I have “fallen off the wagon,” time See Birthday, A13

I kept my upbeat attitude for most of the day, but come evening I could not help but feel a bit disappointed. I had always saved this day for a flurry of activities. There had been no flurry.

be more nonchalant. Oh, but it was not to be. I got through a good portion of February with a modicum of calmness, but all of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks. It is almost Birthday Month!

234358

I should probably apologize up front. I really thought I was going to make it this year. I was going to sail right through Birthday Month (March) with nary a word about it. This year I was going to spare you my overthe-top enthusiasm for it. I know that over the past years I have droned on and on, usually starting in February, and by the time the Big Day (the 29th) rolls around you are probably sick of hearing about it. Besides, with the way things are these days, I figured what is there

to be excited about. Last year - not to feel too sorry for myself – was a bit of a bust. The world had shut down and there was no place to go. I will make the best of it, I told myself, in one of my more transcendent moments. And I was truly delighted with all the birthday calls. So many wellwishers. What a blessing to be so loved.

Like when I had a birthday party for my older son when he turned seven. Being in a Betty Crocker/Martha Stewart frame of mind at the time, I decided to make a cake instead of buy one. It did not go as planned, to say the least. For reasons that I could not explain, the cake came out of the oven extremely lopsided. One side hosted a large hill. Ryan cried and I felt awful about

Of course, there was the occasional glitch.

So I am going to try, with all my might, not to talk about my birthday again, for another year. Besides, I am sure that you have March 29 circled on your calendar.

I made so much of their birthdays that I think, to this day, they are surprised that the mail runs and the banks are open.

this anniversary of my arrival on the planet, I am resetting and tweaking. Because this is my own personal spring. I am revived and renewed, at least for the time being. Also, I love getting presents.

and time again, what with the state of current events, and sometimes the state of my own current events.

A friend that I grew up with, who does not give a fig about his birthday, asked me why I love mine so. Because I am welcoming in the winds of change, for a better life and a better me. Because, in
