Pink Out

The Coginchaug Regional High School boys and girls basketball teams will host a Pink Out doubleheader against Hale-Ray tonight, Feb. 10. The girls play at 5, the boys at 7. Baked goods and a limited number of Pink Out T-shirts will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going to the Smilow Cancer Hospital (in memory of Brenna Zettergren) and St. Jude Hospital (in memory of Debbie Sokol). Donations also will be collected.

Military night

The CRHS Basketball Booster Club has planned a Military Appreciation Night for the girls game against visiting Old Lyme Monday, Feb. 13, 6 p.m. Active and retired veterans are invited to attend the game for free, as guests of the Booster Club.

Kindergarten

Parents/guardians of children living in Durham and Middlefield who will be 5 years old on or before Jan. 1, 2024 must register to attend kindergarten in the fall of 2023 or apply for a waiver of attendance. In Regional School District 13, children may attend kindergarten at Brewster School or John Lyman School. Both schools will post detailed information about kindergarten on their respective websites. The school choice decision for kindergarten needs to be made by Friday, March 10. Parents/guardians of an eligible kindergarten child who wish to hold their child out of school for another year must sign a waiver of attendance at the Office of the Superintendent of Schools.

Roger E. Fairchild

DURHAM- Roger E. Fairchild, 93, of Durham, husband of the late Jean L. (Langhoff) Fairchild, died Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Cromwell. Roger was born in New Haven, son of the late, Charles R. Fairchild and Ida Mae (Potwine) Fairchild. Prior to his retirement Roger was employed at SNET for 35 years. He was veteran serving the U.S. Army after WWII in Japan. Roger is survived by two sons, Mark Fairchild and his wife Teri of Durham, Chris Fairchild and his partner Karen of Middletown, six grandchildren, Meagan, Lauren, callee, Michael, Patrick and Nick. He was predeceased by a son, Jon Fairchild, a brother Justin and a sister Shirley. Roger and his wife enjoyed their spare time traveling across the country visiting many of our national parks. Super Soup Cook-off

The Women’s Society of Christian Service of the United Churches of Durham in conjunction with members of the Middlefield Federated Church invite all to attend Super Soup Cook-off Sunday, Feb. 26, 4 p.m., at Fellowship Hall, United Churches of Durham, 228 Main St. Tickets will be available at the door; adults $7, age 6-plus $3.

The Cook-off menu includes tastings of 12 homemade soups in the competition, along with bread and butter, beverages and a special dessert. Each ticket comes with a token to vote for the best soup.
