The long lines to enter and at fair attractions over the four days indicated that many missed the fair after it was canceled last year because of the pandemic.
This year, for the first time, the fair featured an international food court.
The Durham Fair made a great comeback after being canceled in 2020 due to COVID.
Food vendors represented various countries while musical acts, like an Irish band and an African drummer, entertained visitors.
Among other things, this year’s fair brought 40 toetapping musical acts across four stages, monster trucks and other motorized events, fireworks, and over 8,300 ex-

Celebrate grandparents on Saturday
Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is introducing a new fall event called Evidence of Evil. The attraction will be open every Friday to Sunday in October.
Durham’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee has rescheduled its Grandparents Day Celebration. The event was slated for Sept. 9 at the Farmers Market, but was canceled due to rain. Now, the celebration will take place Saturday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Durham Activity Center.
While passing through the exhibit — hidden in the woods across from the Pick-YourOwn location — people will be met by costumed actors. Tickets are $25 and available online only. A portion of the See Evil, A4

Getting into the weeds enough to just know that it is there. I think it is anyway. Time will tell. I know that, in the past, you have read about the wildness of my yard – a wildness that I love and that I cultivate on purpose. And you have also read that it does get out of hand, seemingly having a life of its own, and that I, at some point, am eagerly awaiting the pruning that fall brings. And this year the wildness is wilder than ever. Every day I sit in my backyard, looking out at the rampant foliage that threatens to engulf me, and this year I love it all. I have a clear space for my lounge chair, and not much else, and that suits me just fine.
The front yard, too, is filled to the brim with greenery and all kinds of leafy things. I like it. One might have to stretch and strain to catch a glimpse of my house, but the only one who really needs to know where my house is, is the Amazon delivery guy. And since I am not into mowing this year, I count myself as fortunate, indeed, that my neighbor, when he is mowing his front yard, swings on over and gets mine – thus giving some semblance of proper maintenance, even if I’m not the one doing the maintaining.
So I’m all tucked in here, in my own little paradise. And soon nature will draw back Oh, a couple of times I and show me that, yes, I rethought it would be nice to ally do have a yard. In Brief
Morganti for P&Z
Move Durham forward
Absentee ballots
Harvest party
Editor :
Editor :
I have known Janet Morganti for many years and can think of no one better to join the Planning and Zoning Committee.
Everyone Outside has been connecting children and families to nature for more than 10 years.
I have never met someone who cared for the businesses in town like she does and I would love to see her be a part of P&Z.
Please support the four outstanding candidates who make up the Democratic slate for Durham’s Planning and Zoning Committee. Josh Eddinger and Chris Balay are knowledgeable, experienced members who have shown excellent judgment in steering the committee on its important course. Janet Morganti is running for her first term after extended service on the Economic Development Commission, on which she served as chair. Jacob Mattison, the “rookie,” is a 12-year resident with 20 years experience in the software industry. He will bring a fresh, contemporary perspective to help move Durham forward as we approach the middle of the 21st century.
Absentee ballots for the November election are now available. Connecticut law allows residents to receive an absentee ballot if they cannot appear at their assigned polling place on election day. Also, the State of Connecticut, via Public Act No. 21-2, determined that the existence of COVID-19 allows residents to vote absentee for safety reasons. Absentee ballot applications can be obtained at portal.ct.gov or by calling 860-349-7116.

School speaker shares his story of addiction recovery In honor of National Recovery Month, in September, Durham Middlefield Local Wellness Coalition and Durham Middlefield Youth & Family Services sponsored a special professional development training at Coginchaug Regional High School.
A once promising studentathlete, Hill became addicted to opioids, barely graduated high school, dropped out of numerous colleges, was arrested several times, was in and out of treatment programs, and lost his friends and family. On Sept. 30, 2012, when Hill entered an extended care treatment program, his journey to recovery began. Through inner strength, patience, hard work, and support from others, Hill turned his mess into
a message. He teaches resiliency by not only maximizing one’s strengths, but also taking what most people perceive as a weakness or negative experience and turning it into a life lesson for personal growth. Over the past decade, Hill started his own speaking and coaching company, graduated from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, earned his juris doctorate from Brooklyn Law School, and published his memoir, “A Journey to Recovery.” Some of the personal experiences Hill shares are difficult for him to talk about, but he knows it’s worth it if his story helps just one person every time he speaks. — Press Release

A great season at the garden
Lyman Orchards coach named LPGA Teacher of the Year Marissa Kulig Crow — a coach at The Lyman Golf Center at Lyman Orchards — recently received the LPGA Northeast Section 2021 Teacher of the Year Award. On Saturday, Sept. 18, the Middlefield-Durham Giving Garden gathered a nice crowd to celebrate the end of the third season of growing behind the Middlefield Community Center. Herbs, vegetables and cut flowers were shared with the community all season long through the senior and social service departments of both towns, with overflow produce going to Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown. Garden manager Betsy St. John congratulated the 30some volunteers who showed up over the season to plant, weed, water, mow, harvest, package and distribute.
She is on track to help 1,400plus women, this season alone, improve their game through her Golf Fore Women program.
Poole introduced his bestproducing hive to attendees, volunteer Kathy Weber provided some easy listening guitar and CAT members contributed snacks.
St. John urged those in attendance to look out for the opening of next season and to volunteer as much or as little as they can to keep the garden growing and giving.
“Last year, we distributed 1,200 pounds, and this year we’re at 1,654 by today with more beans and late crops coming,” she said. St. John pointed to the finally-installed irrigation system (not needed since July 4 due to the wet summer), the new tomato trellises and the regular organic fertilizing regimen of volunteer Sarah Strickland as contributing to the bountiful harvest. Also, at the season-ending celebration, Master Gardener and garden volunteer Rosalie Lamphier shared more herb tips, recipes and snacks, beekeeper Allan

The Independent Day School celebrated its 60th anniversary on Sept. 13 with schoolcolored gifts, cupcakes, and by wearing IDS attire. However, the big celebration of the day came in the afternoon, when the entire school gathered on the front field for a special concert.
