Meriden’s Tim Talento wins state fishing crown, advances to B.A.S.S. Nation championships
By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
Tim Talento was first exposed to fishing by his grandmother Carol Bott at the age of 8 at Black Pond on the Meriden-Middlefield border.
Bott would take Tim, his brother Neil and sister Catrena as well their three cousins to the pond.
“We went fishing there in the sum mer and it became a passion for us,” said Tim. “My brother Neil and I are still fishing.”
And fishing well.
Talento, 42, was this year’s Con necticut B.A.S.S. Nation champion in the Grassroots Division.
The four fish he caught during the three-day competition, held on the St. Lawrence River in June, weighed in at more than 60 pounds.

‘Haunting’ is off and scaring
By Nicole Zappone Town Times
West Haven resident Nicholas Grossman was one of the more than 500 brave souls who attend ed the opening night of Haunting at the Ridge at Powder Ridge Mountain Park & Resort on Sept. 30.
“It was an adventure,” Grossman said. “The zombie area was the scariest and was up there with other Halloween attractions.”
Ernie Romegialli, the creator of Haunting at the Ridge, points out that his popular Halloween attrac tion came out of humble begin nings.
Decades ago, when his 6-year-old daughter was diagnosed with dia betes, Romegialli wanted to do something to get her mind off candy during Halloween. So he decided to create a haunt in the family’s yard while collecting do nations to fight juvenile diabetes.

Linus, I’ll be there this time (promise!)
would love a pizza, though, if you could pull that off. Pep peroni with extra cheese re ally speaks to me. And apple cider. Yeah, that’s the stuff!
morning and I want you fit as a fiddle for it.
If I had arms I would hug you. As for you, please feel free to hug me all you want.
Not many people know this, but pumpkins love hugs. See you Oct. 31.
Sincerely,
The Great Pumpkin
Dear Linus,
The Great Pumpkin here. You write to me faithfully ev ery year, bless your heart. You are, without a doubt, the final word in perseverance. But I’m going to beat you to the punch this year. Since your plea is pretty much the same every year, I feel that I am safe in doing so. Besides, I don’t think I answered last year’s letter. Oops!
You always say that you wait hours for me, to no avail. Well, that is my bad! I hate to think of you shivering out there all night. So this year I will definitely be there. Dear boy, you have waited long enough. I have always planned on being there, ev ery year, but there always seemed to be some snafu in my nightly excursions.
Last year, as suggested by you, I did borrow Santa’s sleigh in order to deliver toys and candy, but it did not go so well. The reindeer balked at the idea, although I as sured them that hauling a pumpkin around instead of a fat man (sorry, Santa, but I can’t imagine this is news to you) would be so much easi er. They said they were only scheduled for Christmas Eve, and they most certainly did not want to leave the
comfort of their barn for an extra all-nighter.
I believe there was talk of joining a union. But Santa pleaded with them, and they finally agreed. However, halfway through the night they decided that they missed their barn too much, that they simply could not go on, and they went rogue on me. I had to walk/roll the rest of the way. It was a tough night. So you can un derstand why I did not get to the pumpkin patch in time.
Yes, I do leave candy and toys for the children, a fact little known to the popula tion at large. And there is no criteria-you do not have to be on the “nice” list. Nice is such an arbitrary term any way.
Last year you asked if I would be descending into the pumpkin patch wearing goggles and/or a cape. I’m sorry to say no, because that certainly would make for a grand entrance. But I have neither the ears for the gog gles or the shoulders for the cape. So I will be making my appearance au natural.
What a lovely mom you have, sending you off every year with warm clothing and a bag full of goodies. I really
So Linus, my dear, this is the year that your dreams come true. I will be there. You won’t be able to miss me. I am really big, for a pumpkin. And then we can catch up and make up for all the years I was truant. Again, so sorry. See if you can bring an extra chair. I know I am a pumpkin and the cold ground should not bother me, but it does. If I had feet, I would put them up.
I will come to you before I start my rounds. I do not want you pulling another allnighter. How does 8:00 sound? I believe you have a history test early the next

Talento is a volunteer boat captain for the high school members of Connecticut B.A.S.S. Nation. It’s made up of 16 fishing clubs from around the state and in cludes 270 adult members and 40 high school member.
Part of Team CT for three of the last four years, Talento qualified for this year’s B.A.S.S. Nation event on the St. Lawrence.
There were 10 total boaters from Connecticut in compe tition against each other as well as fishermen from other states. Talento finished 13th overall and No. 1 in Con necticut.
The event was based in
Waddington, N.Y., but Talen to found the winning waters 67 miles away in Clayton, N.Y. “I spent some gas mon ey, but it was worth it,” Tal ento said. “It was a great fishery.”
Along with the St. Lawrence River, other bodies of water hosting B.A.S.S. Nation re gional’s this year were Ari zona’s Lake Havasu, Alaba ma’s Lewis Smith Lake, Ok lahoma’s Grand Lake and the Upper Mississippi River in Iowa.
Talento will be among 53 an glers competing in the na tional tournament in Flo rence, Ala. next month.
“It’s every kid’s dream to compete in this,” Talento said. “This is my first year winning the state champi onship in Connecticut. I’m happy because the state has some great anglers.”
By day, Talento is in equip ment operations for the City of Meriden, a post he has held for more than two decades.
Talento said he goes fishing as much as he can. He and his wife Michelle have two daughters, 12-year-old Sawyer and 8-year-old Quinn.
As Connecticut champ, Meriden’s Tim Talento will compete in the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship on Nov. 9-11 in Florence, Ala. He’s seen here at Black Pond.
Tim takes Sawyer on the wa ter with him. The two have done mixed open tourna ments. They duo took second in a competition this year.
Now Talento is looking for ward to nationals next month. He’s patrolling the Internet and calling contacts for tips about the local wa ters in Florence, Ala.
“I’m doing lots of research and the world is at my finger tips,” Talento said. “I’m look ing at maps; I’m looking at where the fish are in the fall. I will have a couple of days of practice and I will make sure

Serious problem
Editor:
We were heartened to see the article in the Sept. 23 Town Times, reprinted from the CT Mirror, about Cogin chaug and Suffield High and their efforts to combat racism. The article makes clear that both school dis tricts have farther to go in articulating clearer policies regarding responses to racist behavior or speech on the part of students. Policies need to include specifics on “clearer punishments for racist actions, more com munication and additional resources for students.”
Superintendent Schuch has cited the school’s equity policy and the student code of conduct as evidence that the district is responding to the problem, but the article points out that Cogin chaug’s equity policy “doesn’t include specific punishments for racist be havior.” Education experts,
Letters to the Editor
it notes, see the need for more specific teeth than our local policy provides.
In increasing numbers, stu dents and their parents are opting out of RSD13 and seeking education else where. Our district is facing declining enrollment and this should be a concern to our community.
Anecdotal evidence sug gests that the exodus is one result of a climate in which the district leadership pays lip service to discouraging and preventing racist speech and behavior in the school system, while allow ing a toxic environment to continue with no sustained meaningful action. We urge the school leadership to step up their efforts to change this situation, and we commend the Town Times for printing this sub stantive article highlighting a serious local problem.

Editor:
It is wonderful to have thoughtful, informed, and dedicated representation in Hartford committed to moving forward on real is sues that are important to me, such as reproductive rights, safe schools, fiscal responsibility and a healthy and sustainable environ ment. I wholeheartedly en dorse John-Michael Parker for the 101st House District and Christine Cohen for the 12th Senate District. I have come to know them, heard back from them di rectly when I had ques tions, and I will be voting for them to continue their work that I find to be so important for Durham and for all of Connecticut. Please join me in voting for them Nov. 8. Thank you.

Important meeting
Editor:
Durham farmers need your help on Oct. 19. There will be a Planning & Zoning Commission Public Hearing at 7:30 p.m. to get our resi dents’ vote on a proposed Farm Store Regulation. Please try to attend in per son at Town Hall or by Zoom.
Farm stores are one way of helping to sustain and pre serve Durham’s agricultural entities. They also provide residents with additional op tions for purchasing agricul tural products. The pro posed regulation, developed by the Durham Agriculture Commission, specifies how local farmers may operate farm stores at their farm sites while ensuring their ac tivities do not cause any dis ruptions in local neighbor hoods.
You can see the regulation’s text on the Town of Durham website (Agriculture Com mission page).
In the past, Durham resi dents have supported their local farmers with the ap proval of a Right to Farm Or dinance, a reduction on farm building valuations and a moratorium on declaring horses as personal property. We thank you for that sup port and ask you to give your backing now to the pro posed Farm Store Regula tion.
The Planning & Zoning Commission Public Hearing will give residents a chance to discuss and vote on the proposed Farm Store Regu lation. Please put that meet ing on your calendar. Thank you.
Joe Pasquale, Chairman, Durham Agriculture Com mission
