Jamie Astudillo Interview.... 9 Well, I don’t believe I’ve ever said this here in this column before, but Happy New Year, everyone. By that, I mean this is the first-ever January issue. And that may not even be true because we have moved some print dates around. What it actually means is this is the first year ever where we’ve run a full 12-month print schedule, and that’s exciting. I know this issue isn’t huge, but given time, we expect that to change. We also had an early deadline because of the Christmas holiday, so we had to hustle to get this one done. Inside, you’ll find coverage from the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association’s year-end awards banquet, a Blind Enduro ride, racer interviews, and some really cool spots you can go ride in the offseason or any time of the year for that matter. Also, don’t forget all our other regular features like Where to Ride, Upcoming Events, Sportin’ With Sprocket, PA OHV News, and all club information that will continue with our February issue and throughout the year. I know I say it a lot, but I want to thank everyone for their support of what we do. The staff works real hard to pull this off, but without all you, there would be no need, so thanks again. We would also like to ask for your input as to what you would like to see in our pages. There were some who counted us out and never thought we’d make it this far. However, here we are, approaching our third full year and kicking off our fourth year in publication. Man, time flies, but you know what they say: When it’s fun, the time doesn’t count. So please, although we are a very crafty bunch, we value your input, and we want to know what you would like to see in our pages. All the contact info is below right, so email, Facebook, or contact us through the website, whatever works best for you; please participate and make it your own. OK – so enjoy the New Year, and we’ll see you next at the Great American Outdoor Show and Motorama Events in February in Harrisburg, Pa. Until then – Happy Trails!

Delaware Enduro Riders at Blue Diamond MX Park ECEA Harescramble Series 2013 • November 16-17, 2013 The ECEA Harescramble season came to a close on Nov. 16 and 17 as 764 riders showed up to hit the MX course and trails at the Blue Diamond MX park in New Castle, Del. The event took place over a two-day period with the MX course being open to riders for practice on Saturday. The first up to race were the pee-wee, 50cc, and youth divisions on Saturday afternoon. The track conditions were dry and the trails where dusty, but the weather was perfect for a fall race. Taking the win in the pee-wee race was Max Fernandez, followed by Joseph Scotto in second and Katie Benson in third. The 50cc podium ended up with Nathan Dulaney, Joseph Rainone, and Kolton Koontz. As for the youth event, first went to Kyle Tino, with Henry Symanski and Anthony Kropp rounding out the top three. Overall for the year, the first-place win for each of these classes (ECEA non official point standings) were Max Fernandez in Pee Wee, Nathan Dulaney in 50cc, and Kyle Tino in Youth. What an outstanding job of racing all of the ECEA Fastkids have done, and I give all of them a big thumbs-up and way to go! I can see some truly fast future adult riders in each one of you, and boy, it won’t be long until some of you will be out there in the Sunday races, and everyone had better watch out! Out of the 764 riders that showed up, 309 of them mounted up to kick off the

racing on Sunday morning, being the first to hit the MX track, Enduro Cross, and trails for the day. The weather was perfect, and conditions were no different than on Saturday. The overall win for the morning race was as follows: Wallace Palmer in first place, Daniel Wallace in second place, and Joseph Bromley in third place. The Women’s class saw Wendy Jaudas in first, with Atalie Yingling second and Annelisa Davis in third. Michael Lafferty took the main event win out of a total of 256 riders, followed by Shane Hufford and Kyle McDonal. I have to say it was an amazing event, and seeing so many riders come to take part in this final ECEA Harescramble event of the season was incredible. Not only were there ECEA Harescrambe riders, but there were also enduro riders, NEOC, Netra Riders, and motocross riders, and it was great to see them all show up to ride this final event of the season. Thank you to all who showed up. Thank you to ECEA for another great year of riding for the Fastkids and adults. It takes a lot of time and energy not only for the ECEA, but also the clubs that host these events. Thank you, and we all look forward to next year’s ECEA Harescramble and Enduro Series. To see the ECEA final standings for the year and information on the upcoming banquet on Jan. 25 at Lancaster Host Resort and Conference, Lancaster, Pa., visit ecea.org.

Local Female Racer Has Banner Year By: Jamie Astudillo #469

Most improved riders in 2013 were Mel Mahan and Cheyenne McGuin.

Gary Luckett receives the Stan & Dorthy Miles award for dedication to the sport.

MAMA Hall of Famers. See all class champions at www.recrider.com.

This was a great summer for me. First up was Loretta Lynn’s, where I finished ninth overall in my first year in the Girls 12-16 class. Then, I raced my first-ever GNCC at Unadilla, finishing first with a 25-plus minute lead. After that, I was called to represent the country of Ecuador in the Latinoamericano WMX Open Championship, where all Latino countries are invited to bring their best women riders to compete for a FIM (Federation Internationale of Motocyclisme) title. There I was, part of the hosting country team and being the youngest rider of the competition out of 28. It was a challenge for me because not only I was the youngest, racing against women of up to 26 years of age, but I was also racing in very different track conditions because they don’t groom the tracks real deep. It’s almost like racing flat track, and the biggest challenge of all was that the only bike I could race was a big bike. Thanks to a dealership in Ecuador, I had one of the best bikes at the gate, a YZ125cc. I had two days to get used to the track, the bike, the very hot weather of Ecuador, and, of course, the pressure I put on myself to have a great race and get a podium position. On Sunday, Sept. 29, we got to the gate for the first of three time qualifying practices, and I did well, coming in eighth place. In the second qualifying practice, I did a lot better with a fifth-place finish, and the last qualifying practice, I came in third place. That was awesome, but we knew the better the start was the better chance I had of making the podium. So I was ready for the race!!! There were no starting blocks allowed, I was too small on the bike, and no mechanic was allowed at the gate. I had to manage to get the bike in position, pick it up, and get ready to go all by myself. We were all dying of nerves, but I got it all set up perfectly. Also, the inexperience got to me, and I was one of the last ones to the first corner. Thanks to the training for Loretta Lynn’s, I was in a very good shape to manage coming from a 20th-place start to finish fifth in a 20-minute moto. So with that, my confidence rose to the roof, and I was ready for my second moto. The same thing happened, and I got a very bad start, but I went charging all the way for a sixth-place moto finish and a fifth overall. For this race, the podium was to the top five, so I made it to podium behind Venezuelan World GPWMX top 10 rider Maria Lorca, Chilean National Champion Valentina Galaz, Guatemalan AMA WMX rider Alexandra Lopez, and Chilean second-place National Tania Gonzalez. Of course, being the best place finish for the Ecuadorian country was the best feeling, and the pressure was finally off. We are hoping to get invited next year to race the Latinoamericano WMX Open Championship 2014.

BCTRA Blind Enduro and Dual Sport New Park, Pa • December 1, 2013 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Early December took us to southern York County, Pa., for the fourth annual Blind Enduro put on by the Baltimore County Trail Riders. This event is held on a farm of 300-plus acres, and the proceeds go to Star Community, Inc., in Hagerstown, Md. Star Community offers services to individuals with developmental disabilities, and their program dates back to 1970. This was my first year attending the event, and boy was I surprised. As I entered the drive back through the woods leading into this event, there were bikes everywhere. As I awoke Sunday to a balmy 25 degrees, my thoughts were, “Maybe 100 riders if they are lucky.” Turns out over 500 riders attended this ride for charity, which was over a 100 more than last year. The concept is basically a trail ride with courses laid out for all skill levels. There were three different paths that riders could choose totaling anywhere from 3 to 9 miles in length. Riders could ride at will or choose to be timed. The idea was to keep consistent lap times without the use of any timing equipment, hence the name “Blind Enduro.” The ride started at 10 a.m., and you could ride as many loops as your heart desired, all for a $30 donation with no AMA card required. They also offered a dual sport ride in the area on both Saturday and Sunday. Some of the coolest things I noticed about the event was there were riders there from 5 to 90 years old and the bikes varied from brand-new KTM XC’s to early-year Ossa, Pentons and the like. It was definitely a walk down memory lane with early DTs and ITs; I saw a Rokon and a Rickman, too. The Iron Man goes out to 89-year-old Dick Kirchner from Lancaster, Pa., riding the 80s-era TY 350 Yammie. Dick is a very animated WW II vet, and word has it that he rides almost every week; talk about vintage at its best. If you were there, I know you had a blast. If you weren’t there, watch for next year’s event in our pages. If you would like to help out a worthy cause, go online to: www.starcommunityinc.org.

Baja in Vegas By: Tom Pickup

"What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!" is the motto we all hear on the TV and radio ads. Well that was until we met Rick Wyatt from American Adventure Tours. Rick started his business well over 20 years ago as the first permitted business to lead groups of tourists through the perilous desert land in Nevada. Rick is an old-school desert racer who is still letting it hang out on a daily basis, as he actively runs two race teams. His business, American Adventure Tours (www. americanadventuretours.com), has led the likes of National Geographic and The Discovery Channel through the Grand Canyon and many other places in the Nevada desert. And now it was time to run the Rec Riders through the Nevada desert! After a short phone call with Lisa, we were emailed a set of directions that read like a treasure map ... and following them led us straight to our destination: a flag pole in the middle of the desert! A million mob movie scenes ran through our mind simultaneously as we sat and looked off into the endless flat desert. They offered to pick us up, but since our house rental fell through, I really didn’t have a location, so we opted for the full experience. American Adventure Tours can customize individual or group tours, like teambuilding events. It offers a wide variety of machines and safety gear. If you don't like sharing helmets, I'd say bring your own and a good set of goggles. Rick and crew are also heavily involved in legal legislation to keep land open for our recreational use, which is always a big thumbs up from us! OK, he's one of us ... Now let's ride! Due to a recent fall at Fishers Reunion in Rock Run, my knee was still smarting.

Great thing for me, Rick had a nice Polaris RZR 800! Their machines were all nice, and they had everything from KTM dirt bikes to LTZ 400s. All the machines were well maintained, and they started and performed great with no malfunctions! And after an important speech regarding safety and dos and don'ts, it was time to go. Well almost ... Rick let us in on one more secret: to take off your shirt and soak it in the cooler before you can ride! It is hot and very easy to dehydrate and ... well, that's not good. We ripped through the desert landscape with dust and sand blowing off the rear tires! The view was endless, and the scenery was breath-taking. After an awesome rip through the desert, we approached the mountain that an hour ago was just a distant view. As we traversed the mountainous cliff roads, we reached an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet and a view like no other. Rick pointed out our final destination ... a dry lake bed on the horizon. Back in the Polaris and away we went! Well, we made it back from Vegas with all our fingers and teeth. A couple funny stories and a couple more that nobody saw, and you can't prove a thing! (Kidding.) And best of all, one sweet ride through the desert! Thanks, Rick and team at American Adventure Tours! If you’re thinking about a ride through the desert, get a hold of the guys and gals at American Adventure Tours. It's sure to be an experience you won't forget. And don't forget to tell 'em the Rec Riders sent ya! Happy Trails!

All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on stateowned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and nonprofit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.

Registration For ATVs used anywhere off of your own property or property leased by you, such as designated State Forest trails. $20 fee every two years Limited Registration For ATVs used solely on your own land or land leased by you. Free registration -No expiration, unless ownership of vehicle changes

An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.

Liability Insurance

If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

Rec Rider Interview – MX Antix USA

RR: Can you tell me a little about your program and what your goals are? MX: MX Antix's main focus is to support and promote the future of motocross - the mini and junior riders. MX Antix is a free-to-read online Junior and Mini Moto X magazine based in New Zealand (NZ). The first magazine was released in March 2012, and they have produced seven issues since then. They cover competitions and events, profiles of local and international mini/junior riders, new products, and a lot of information associated with Junior and Mini MX. They have a team of eight Junior and Mini riders in NZ and on November 23, 2013, they introduced the USA team. RR: I know you did a trip to New Zealand earlier this year. Can you tell me about that? MX: MX Antix invited Kyle to race for their team at the NZ MX Mini Nationals in Auckland. So we did fundraisers and had a donation site. The support was profound, and we were able to raise all of the funds and get him to NZ. He was the only American rider there, and the NZ families loved having an overseas rider to race against. He placed fourth equal, but the other rider won the last race, so Kyle got 5th overall. He did great! The people of NZ treated us like family!

RR: Do you have a team of American riders? MX: Yes, we currently have a team of five riders and are looking to fill one more spot. In addition to the support the team will receive here in the US, our team riders will have all of the accommodations that Kyle had while in NZ. So any of our riders that travel to NZ for next year's nationals will have a bike and all accommodations sorted as well as full promotion of the event. RR: Can you tell me who your riders are? MX: Kyle Born, 50 cc Brooke Bowlin, 50cc Alexander Brion, 65cc Jack Rogers, 85cc Kenny Venarchick – Schoolboy, 250B RR: How about sponsors of your program? MX: We have been so fortunate. We have the following sponsors: Motocrossvest.com, Arai, Elite Apparel, RNB Racing, Limited Decal, Race Shop, 1Hundred% MX Training, Twin Air, Munn Racing KTM, Martin Racing, My Lucas Oil, MX Antix NZ, EVO East.

RR: How big is their racing program there, and how did you get hooked up with them? MX: New Zealand has a very active motocross community, and it’s building rapidly. NZ has produced #1 World Champions like Ben Townley and Women’s #1 Katherine Prumm. It's not a big country, with just 4.3 million people living there, so if you are riding at the top of your game, you can guarantee the whole country knows about you. The MX Antix NZ team currently has eight riders ranging from 6 to 18 years old. MX Antix featured Kyle in Oct 2012 in their magazine. They wanted to do a profile on an international rider, and they picked Kyle after seeing him as a featured rider on Leatt’s Facebook page.
