Tell Us What You Want To See In Rec Rider Magazine Take The Survey At

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RRsurvey14 on or before 2/28/14. Happy Spring, everybody!! Well, a guy can hope, can’t he? By the time you’re reading this, that blasted groundhog will have made another prediction. Of course, he is about as reliable as the weather person on your local news channel. According to my research, the hog has been right in 39% of his predictions over the last 100-plus years. I didn’t research the local news channel statistics because I’m afraid the hog might be just a tad bit better at his job, and I didn’t want to embarrass anybody. Anyhow, I’m sure I’ll take some heat for that bit of gibberish. If you’re like me, however, you are ready for some heat and for spring to arrive so we can get our ride on. Not that winter will stop you; however, in my eyes I’d much rather do it in the warm weather than in the cold. So it is February, and let’s just say that it’s a “spring” board into the riding season. This month, find our booth at the Great American Outdoor Show. There we will share space with our sister publications, Auto Locator and the PA Auto Connection. After that, we will be right back in Harrisburg for the Motorama Races and Shows. This event, in its 36th year, is a crowd-pleaser for all ages, whether racers or purely recreational riders, and it is sure to cure the winter blues. Please stop and see us at our booth to say hi while you’re there. In this issue, find updates on where to ride both inside and outside of our region. We don’t have an upcoming event schedule, as many of those aren’t complete yet. Actually, most don’t even start until March, so watch for its return then. You can also stay updated online at www. RecRider.com. Speaking of our website, you can stay tuned there in between issues for things like local happenings and upcoming events. You can also see our back issues there and link to other industry websites and local photographers who are out on a regular basis catching you in action. As always, we thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you at the track and out on the trail. Until then – Happy Trails!

It’s Motorama Time Preview 2014

Hey all, here we go again. It’s Motorama time and that means the kickoff to another great season here in our neck of the woods. You know I’m really not a winter kind of a guy, but it seems like we got through it pretty quick this year. Here we are back in Harrisburg, Pa., for the 36th Annual Motorama Races and Shows. I’ve been attending this event almost since its beginning. I think they started in 1978 or ’79, and my first was in the early 1980s.

The show sure has changed a lot since then, but one thing that hasn’t is that Motorama signifies it’s time to ride again, that spring is just around the corner, and it’s time to get our ride on. Below see some of last year’s action. Some of the racers will be returning and some won’t, but one thing’s for sure, it’s party time. So grab your family and reserve your seats, and we’ll see you in Harrisburg on February 16-17. Get all the details at: www.Motoramaevents.com

Casey Martin was your Open A quad winner on both days of racing action.

Smerlick (06) and Leatherman (24L) went 1 -2 both days in the 50 (4-6) class.

As usual it was another packed house at last year’s Motorama.

Jack Rogers was a big winner, taking four main event wins on the weekend.

Local pro Lowell Spangler won big in the Dash for Cash races, winning 5 of 6 laps.

The Pit Bike gates were full; Johnson (924) grabbed a pair of wins and Weary (10) took a class too.

AMA District 6 – 2013 Awards Banquet By: Jim Bull Photo.com

Early January took us to the Holiday Inn Grantville, Pa., to celebrate an evening with D6’s fastest for 2013. This was the organization’s 52nd annual Awards Banquet, and that says a lot, folks. Our local district is one of the biggest and oldest in the nation, and countless national champions have come from its ranks. I’d love to name names here, but I know I would miss somebody, and quite frankly there’s just not enough room. From the founders, some of whom are still around to the racers, the list is phenomenal. This year did see a first as the trials discipline began the District 6 Hall of Fame with two inductees from their community. Sonny Dietz, longtime racer and District 6 member, was the force behind getting the “Hall Idea” started. Jerry Young and his son Ryan Young are the first two inductees and are actually District 6 legends in themselves. Jerry, who still competes, started riding in 1968 and has been responsible for bringing both national and international trials events to our area. He is the man who initiated trials competition in our district and a founding member of the North American

Trials Council. Ryan obviously grew up around the sport and was the first person ever to win 6 national championships in a row. He is the owner of Ryan Young Products and the sole importer of the Sherco and Scorpa brands of motorcycles to the United States. In motorcycle trials competitions, riders transverse themselves and their machines over both natural and manmade obstacles. If you are a motorcycle enthusiast and have never been to a trials event, you need to go; you’ll be hooked for sure. The hopes are that the rest of the disciplines will follow suit in the coming years to help build the District 6 Hall of Fame. If you know someone you believe should be there, please contact a district representative. After the special awards, the trophies were given to all champions; this was followed by a DJ and dancing. I’d like to congratulate all who competed. Remember: Being a champion doesn’t mean you have to come in first. Please also view a complete list of winners at www.d6mx.com and photos from the evening at www.recrider.com.

Central Mountains ATV Assoc., Inc. held its second annual Tour for Elk and Toy Drive on Nov. 10, 2013. We had a record number of riders join us for our club ride this year. Last year we had 41 members ride the roads of Benezette, Pa., and this year we had 162 riders join us on a 42 degree day with overcast skies and a steady breeze. Once we got everyone signed in at the Elk Visitor’s Center, which took us a little longer than we planned with the large turnout, we started our day with lunch at the Benezette Hotel and then a stop at the Benezette Winery Store, which everyone seemed to enjoy. We broke up the riders into four groups to help with everyone getting their lunch and visit to the winery completed in a timely manner. Then we started touring the township roads in Benezette to look for elk. Depending on the group we were in, most of us saw on average 150 elk on this great day in Benezette. Everyone had a good time visiting the Elk Visitor’s Center, and some people even watched the movie on how the elk were brought into our state. We collected 127 toys for our club’s first toy drive to be donated to the Mark the Shark Toy Drive, which is sponsored by FM 92.1. We delivered all the toys we collected to the Walmart in Mill Hall, Pa., on Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. We used our club’s barrel train behind one of our member’s ATVs to deliver the toys to Mark the Shark. The toys are distributed through local charities with the help of students from Central Mountain Middle School and the Lock Haven Area Jaycees. We would like to thank everyone who made this event such a success. I would like to thank all of our dedicated members who helped get everyone parked and signed in as quickly as they could to handle the 162 riders. I would like to give a special thank you to our vice president, Carl Johnson, who put a lot of time in setting up and planning this event. You can see the pictures from our second annual Tour for Elk and Toy Drive on our website, www.cmatva.org. Come join the fun and become a member today, and we will include your 2014 membership. CMATVA hopes everyone had a happy and safe holiday. Be Alert….Ride Smart….Stay Safe….

Middle Atlantic Four Wheel Drive Association (MAFWDA) Selects 2013 Club of the Year • By Larry Pope, MAFWDA President • Photos By Michael Vincenty, MAFWDA Secretary During the 2013 MAFWDA Annual Convention, the Board of Directors and Association Club Delegates had the honor of selecting the inaugural MAFWDA Club of the Year. For 2013, Capital Off Road Enthusiasts, Inc. (CORE) was selected for that honor. Below you will have the opportunity to read the outstanding nomination submitted by CORE members Andrew Taylor and Cherie Wood. I am looking forward to the competition for 2014. Here is a little background before you read on. CORE is organized as a nonprofit organization for the purpose of providing social, educational, and recreational four wheel drive activities for its members and guests, as well as participating in and supporting civic activities for the betterment of the community. Now the outstanding write-up provided by Andrew and Cherie. Despite its small size, CORE has continuously shown its dedication and enthusiasm to the promotion of, and participation in, the off-roading community. Its core fundamentals include the responsible enjoyment of our shared resources and the commitment to preserving them. Throughout the year 2013, CORE has actively upheld the values of MAFWDA and has made significant strides in development as a representative of its membership. The most impressive contribution CORE has made to MAFWDA can be seen in its participation in the board and the activities pursued in support of the board. First and foremost, their own president, Larry Pope, has enthusiastically taken on the role of president for the MAFWDA. Under his leadership, the MAFWDA community has remained active and has made definitive and impressive headway in positive land use activities. In addition, CORE member Bob Weaver assumed the position of MAFWDA vice president and member Michael Vincenty holds the position of MAFWDA secretary. These members have eagerly participated in MAFWDA-sponsored events and have worked tirelessly to maintain an active and dedicated membership. In pursuit of this, Michael Vincenty runs and publishes both the MAFWDA website and the Recovery Points newsletter to keep members informed and to encourage participation. CORE members have also shown their dedication through their participation in MAFWDA-sponsored activities and meetings. At the MAFWDA meeting on May 18, seven of the 12 attendees were CORE members. CORE also manned the MAFWDA booth at the PA Jeeps All Breed Jeep Show, hosted by membership group PA Jeeps. The event took place on July 20 to 21, and CORE contributed 10 volunteers to aid PA Jeeps in running the event and promoting MAFWDA in their booth. In addition to participation in MAFDWA-sponsored events, CORE members have also maintained a constant voice in the online community and in off-road publications. In the year 2013, CORE has added six new trail reports to their website CORE Members

Larry Pope, president of MAFWDA, presents Robert Rixham, CORE member-at-large, with the 2013 MAFWDA Club of the Year Award.

and has many more planned. They contributed a trip report to the July issue of the MAFDWA newsletter, Recovery Points, on a recent trip to the Green Ridge State Forest. They have also contributed several articles to United’s Voice, including an article on their recent trip to Green Ridge State Forest, and were included in an article about their participation in a volunteering project at Potomac State Forest. CORE has also been a strong advocate for positive land use activities and has participated in a number of campaigns to promote them. The group spent the weekend of October 11 volunteering at Green Ridge State Forest, helping to maintain the forest and build relationships with the forest staff that may lead to future use of currently closed trails. On the weekend of August 2, CORE joined MAFWDA in their volunteering efforts at Potomac State Forest. The volunteering efforts at this event helped clear storm damage from Hurricane Sandy and reopen potentially life-saving fire trails to the park rangers. These events helped promote a positive view of the off-roading community in hopes of gaining access to public and private lands, but also as an effort to maintain positive relationships with local land managers and aid in conservation efforts through trail maintenance and repair. Recently, there have been a number of opportunities for CORE members to show their support to the efforts of positive land use in the DNR proposal on the expansion of the ORV trail system. CORE members attended several meetings on this topic to provide vocal support to this cause, including the Maryland DNR meeting on June 9. CORE members also participated in a number of online campaigns and questionnaires to show their support of reopening public land in Maryland. And finally, CORE became a member of the Maryland OHV Alliance in an effort to support these campaigns and further connect with others in the community. The year 2013 has been an active and prosperous year for CORE and its ongoing efforts to promote positive land use and the enjoyment of fun and safe off-roading activities. They have maintained a steady schedule of events including Big Dog’s Ice Breakers, Wheelin’ for Hope, and trail rides to Casparis, Peter’s Mill, and Flag Pole Knob, among others. They have dedicated themselves to volunteering their time in positive land use campaigns in Green Ridge State Forest and Potomac State Forest, as well as in the online community. Through these efforts CORE has not only exhibited a positive example of an off-roading community, but has also been a prime example of upstanding club membership in MAFWDA. They have made every effort to actively engage their club members in MAFWDA sponsored activities and have gone above and beyond with their enthusiastic participation. Each CORE member is delighted to be a part of such an active and forward-thinking organization and proudly dons their MAFWDA stickers on every rig!

2007 Kawasaki KLX300R Dual Sport Build By: Bill Kaster

Our 2007 KLX300R before modifications.

NiCd battery pack comes prewired into the back of the headlight. So now that we had the kit it was time to start tearing into this awesome project. We started by removing the shrouds, number plates, seat, and gas tank. This allowed us to easily run all the wiring and hook everything up much easier. The kit is as close to plug and play as they come. We ran into a few minor setbacks, but after all, it’s a six-year-old bike and had some wiring work that needed to be adjusted. Next, we removed the front headlight assembly and the taillight assembly. Now that most of the stock parts were removed we began at the rear of the bike with the rear taillight assembly from Baja Designs. This taillight now has a driving light, a license plate light and holder, and also a brake light. The assembly required just four little holes to be drilled to allow the assembly to bolt to the rear fender. We then attached the rear turn signals and fished all the wires ahead to the center of the bike. By starting in the rear and working to the front, it made it real easy to hook up all of the wires correctly and allowed us to start and stop without forgetting where we were. We then ran the new wiring harness from the front of the bike along the frame and back to the stator connection. We hooked up all the rear lights and wires to their colorcoded connectors, and we were finished with the rear. The next item was the rear hydraulic brake switch, which controlled the rear brake light. This was as easy as removing the stock flange bolt and replacing it with the one included in the kit. Since we were already oily from doing the rear brake, we also jumped ahead and did the front switch as well, bled the brake lines, and called that step done. Now it was time to detach the old light switch and kill switch and replace them with the new ignition key switch and the new switch panel, which controlled

The Baja Designs Kit bolted up with no troubles.

Who has not ever wanted to take their dirt bike to work? Or maybe you want to go check out a state forest, but a car is just too boring. Well, we feel the same way. We recently picked up a 2007 Kawasaki KLX300r. This is a race-ready enduro bike that Kawasaki produced from the early ’90s until 2007. The only problem with this bike is that it’s off-road only. So now you just limited your riding places to less than half. Now some of you may say "just buy a dual sport." The difference is, being that the 300r is off-road, it is geared for off-road riding, which allows you to rip on the trails and still be able to hop on the road at a decent speed, whereas the dual sport version is geared for the road, which takes away some power on the trails. This project has always been in my mind since the town I grew up in had many trails but most of them were linked by road. So I am going to give you a rundown on a full on road build for the state of Pennsylvania. Remember, other state laws may differ and you should check with the DMV before starting a build. So here is the rundown. Since the 300r is an enduro, it comes stock with a headlight and taillight; now the only problem is they are not DOT approved, so you must remove them and start from scratch. I started by contacting Baja Designs out of California. They offer many different lighting kits for just about any bike imaginable. They have everything from LED light bars for your SxS to full dual sport kits for your CR500! So we went ahead and ordered their dual sport kit for our 300r. The kit included 90% of what was needed to achieve this build. It comes with a dot headlight prewired with high beam, low beam, horn, turn signals, break lights, battery, and voltage regulator. There is a rear light with license plate holder, four turn signals, full wiring harness, and an ignition switch. Being that my bike does not have a battery, a nice

the high-low beam, turn signals, and horn. With all of this plugging right in thanks to the great step-by-step instructions included in the kit, it was time to attach the headlight assembly. This was like the brains of the whole system. Attached to the back of the headlight bracket were the voltage regulator, battery pack, horn, and front turn signals. All of these wires combined to a nice eight-prong connector, which plugged right into the new wiring harness. The only thing left was to hook the stator up to the new wiring harness, and we were lit up like a Christmas tree. Now that the Baja Designs kit was installed and working properly, it was time to move on to some other upgrades! IMS Products hooked us up with a sweet set of the Pro Series foot pegs. These pegs are awesome and good luck trying to slip off of these. They are made from 17-4 cast stainless steel and polished to a beautiful shine. Furthermore, they are much wider than the stock pegs and provided a great platform for riding! Now it was time

The light and tag assemblies bolt up nicely out of the way.

for the Speedometer. Trailtech’s Vapor speedometer/tachometer was the perfect candidate. With its well-lit screen to its huge rpm gauge this little computer worked wonders. We also picked up their Indicator light board, which gave us turn signal lights, high beam light, and hazard light indicators. This was great for riding during the day, because we were quickly able to realize when we forgot to turn off our turn signal. Next were some other goodies from the guys at Pine Grove Yamaha. We grabbed a pair of Protaper Evo CR Hi bend bars, Pro taper fat bar mounts, Scott grips, and some new Msr bark busters to finish off the project. The only mod we were not able to finish as of yet was our new wheels. We received a sweet set of Warp 9 rims; however, they do not make a full setup for this particular bike, so we are waiting on some stock hubs and spokes to show up. Now the only thing left to do is to get to a Certified Enhanced Inspection mechanics shop and have an Enhanced inspection done. Hopefully all goes well and we will see you on the open road or TRAIL!

Our project bike after completion.

Tuesday Toolbox: Alicia McCormick

Story By: Jared Bolton • Photos By: Ken Hill • www.gnccracing.com Alicia McCormick proved herself to be one of the challengers of the Women’s Amateur class in 2013, and she did this while being a mother and a wife and holding a full-time job in addition to being a racer. We caught up with Alicia to talk about her 2013 season, plans for 2014, and more.

What's your favorite thing about GNCC Racing? The quality time spent with your family and friends! Then, of course, hearing, “Good morning, GNCC Racing nation!” and that famous “10 seconds” call.

GNCCRacing.com: How's everything going today? Alicia McCormick: Great! Hectic as usual, busy day in the office and an eventful night at home. Ryder is in the basement right now throwing down some laps on his strider, Layne is playing Mad Skills Motocross, and Brian is fixing a broken toilet seat. (laughs)

What has been the biggest accomplishment of your racing career? Other than landing my first Tuesday Toolbox? (laughs) I’d have to say my win at Snowshoe. I’ve heard horror stories about Snowshoe, so winning there definitely boosted my confidence.

Wow, nonstop for sure! Did you enjoy your Christmas? Definitely! When you have children, it brings a whole new meaning and excitement to Christmas. Oh, and I got a sweet new Shoei helmet and a hot pink race pipe, so that’s a plus as well.

What do you hope to do on the racing side in the future? I’d like to continue to race as long as I can. When the day comes that I can't, I’ll still be there supporting Layne and maybe our 3-year-old, Ryder. I see myself being a big advocate for the sport, on the track and off.

What's your New Year's Resolution? To put 150% into everything I do. Being a momma, a wife, a racer, and a friend. And to never take anything for granted. That’s a solid resolution for sure. So, tell everyone a little about yourself. I'm a 28-year-old married woman with two boys and an awesome husband named Brian. I have a career with the state, a house in the sticks, and I’m an adrenaline junky to the max. I love doing anything that'll make me sweat, give me a rush, or make my heart pound. Sometimes my husband wishes I liked to read, knit, or even relax. (laughs) Yeah, but we all know that just relaxing isn’t always as fun as it sounds! How did you get started racing? Our son Layne started racing in 2011 and, well, I've never been a good spectator. I always said I wanted to try, so I relentlessly nagged and bugged Brian for a year. He finally let me try it in 2012, and I was hooked! I ran a few races in 2012 and my first full season this year, 2013. What's it like juggling being a mom, a wife, and a racer? It’s crazy sometimes, especially when you throw my job and our business in the mix. Honestly, I wouldn't trade it for the world. We’re a racing family; it’s what we do. So it's a tough job, but someone has to do it, right? Right! I couldn’t pull it off without an amazing support system. Brian is the most caring, patient, and helpful person I know. He puts a lot of hard work and long hours into our racing program and still manages to tuck the kiddos in and get them ready in the morning so I can go to the gym. How did your 2013 season go? Could have gone better but definitely could have been a lot worse. I won some, lost some, wrecked some, broke a couple times, and learned a whole lot. I won 2 GNCCs, Snowshoe and the Gusher. I finished the year third place in my class. I also met so many great people and have made ever lasting friendships! What was the biggest highlight for you? I would say its tie between my first GNCC win at Snowshoe and watching Layne secure the 2013 70 CVT championship at Unadilla. What do you hope to accomplish in 2014? I’m running the WXC1 class. I hope to finish strong each race, get faster, and continue to mature as a racer. And prove to my sponsors I have what it takes to run up front.

What advice would you give to aspiring women racers? Dream big! Don't let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Trust yourself and don't let your fears get the best of you. Alright, before we wrap this up, who would you like to thank? First and foremost, my husband Brian; our boys, Layne and Ryder; and the rest of my family for their support. Chris Borich, Dawn Lahr, Joe and Mary Ellen Borich, and the rest of the Borich Bandits crew. You guys are like a second family to us, and I cannot thank you enough. The Hunter family: Heather, Doug, Hannah, and Hayden, you guys are the best friends and support group that we could ever ask for. Also my mechanic Matt Brandau, Traci Pickens, Johnny Gallagher, and my work for always allowing me take off to go racing. Kara Merritt for having a countdown until Florida and all my fellow racers. You all make this what it is. Definitely big thanks goes to Ye Olde Cycle Barn and everyone that works there, Fly Racing, Fox Shox, Rekluse, and new for 2014 HMF, IQ, and Walsh. And a huge shout-out to Racer Productions for sweet tracks to race and an awesome series to be a part of. Happy 2014, fellow motor heads and adrenaline junkies. Let’s get this started!

OFFROAD 101: COME RIDE WITH US! Photos By: Joann Hauser

Motorcycle riders come in all shapes and sizes, and fortunately there are bikes and events to suit all of us. You name the terrain or conditions and without a doubt, there will be a motorcycle fit for the task and a rider ready for the challenge. The East Coast Enduro Association (ECEA) offers off-road riding opportunities for all abilities and ages. From non-competitive trail rides to the rough and tumble bar-banging action of our Hare Scramble races, from 4 years old to 80 years young, we have something for you! There are 36 events on the 2014 ECEA schedule hosted in the Mid-Atlantic States from late February to mid-November that are sponsored by our 19 member clubs. These events include our family fun days, our non-competitive dual sport trail rides, our cross country enduro series, and our championship Hare Scramble races. We offer the broadest choice of format, terrain, and challenge available in the United States. Whether you are a beginning rider or an experienced racer, we would love to introduce you to the exciting world of off-road motorcycling. The following is an introduction to the various events and disciplines offered by the ECEA. Family Fun Days- Our family fun days sprouted from our youth Hare Scrambles Series. They are more of an informal get-together with some riding more so than an emphasis on riding only. They provide a chance for our riders and families to have a relaxing day socializing, playing, and enjoying the camaraderie that we rarely have time for at our competitive events. It is also a great opportunity for new folks to get to know us and learn about the ECEA and our events. Activities usually include fun and games, barbecue and food, meet-and-greets from some of our riding heroes (stars like Andrew DeLong, Jesse Groemm, Mike Lafferty, and Jerod Stoner), riding school and tips, and fun play riding. There are no requirements to enjoying one of our family fun days; just come ready for a great day with great people. the chance to do what we love—ride with our friends. The courses are generally 80 to 120 miles long and consist of a mix of single track trail, two track dirt roads, fire cuts, power lines, and in some cases, public roads. Some events are a single day and some are two days, with the two-day events usually hosting entertainment in the evening. The sponsoring clubs lay out the route so that beginning riders can easily negotiate the terrain and have a fun day in the saddle. For the heartier souls the courses split to “hero sections,” providing a greater challenge featuring enduro-style terrain on single track trail. A route sheet is provided to all entrants showing mileage, terrain descriptions, direction of the course, and turns. The courses are also clearly marked with directional arrows, wrong-way indicators, and caution or danger signs where necessary. A lunch stop for refueling your bike and body is provided with your entry fee. If the lunch stop is away from the start area, the sponsoring club will either provide a gas truck to transport your fuel or host the break at a location where you can purchase fuel. It is not a race, so you can spend the day riding your pace with your friends. The clubs usually request that you leave the start area by a certain time in the morning so they can ensure all participants safe return at the end of the day. Most dual sport rides will require a licensed, insured motorcycle, as they usually include some sections of public road. It is best to contact the sponsoring club for specific requirements. Entry fees are usually $40-$50 per day and include food at the lunch break. A dual sport ride provides an awesome value for the money. Where else can you find a prepared and marked trail, have your fuel transported, eat a delicious lunch, and ride your dirt bike all day? Enduro- An enduro is a race against the clock that tests the rider’s ability to negotiate technical terrain and maintain a predetermined time schedule. If you have ever seen an off-road car rally, the format is very similar. Most enduro courses are a single loop between 60 and 100 miles long, and, in general, are more challenging and physically demanding than a dual sport. The route consists of a series of test sections that may include a mix of technical single track trail, grass track, or other natural obstacles. Usually there are checkpoints at the beginning (check-in) and the end (checkout) of each technical section where the rider’s time is recorded. The competitors attempt to maintain the predetermined schedule and arrive at the checkpoints on time. Every minute a rider is late to the checkpoint counts as a point. The rider with the fewest number of points accumulated through all test sections for the day is the winner. Arrival time is recorded to the second at some checkpoints in order to break ties if rider’s accumulated points for the day are even. The test sections are connected by easier transfer sections composed of any mix of roads, dirt roads, power lines, or two track trails where the predetermined time schedule is easily maintained. Like a dual sport, the rider is provided a route sheet, and the course is clearly marked with directional arrows, wrong-way indicators, and caution markers. There are also refueling locations either back at the start area or remote, in which case the sponsoring club will provide a gas truck. Normally, remote gas stops are accessible by pit crews. Riders traverse the course in groups of four or five, dictated by the sponsoring club, at oneminute intervals. Of course, speed and ability lead to separation in the test sections, but the riders regroup for the transfer to the next test. You may choose to ride with your buddies on the same row (or “minute”) by entering the enduro together. There are two types of endures: time keeping and non-time keeping (National Format). In the time keeping format the riders must maintain the predetermined time schedule throughout the day, even on the transfer section, as they can be penalized for

AA racers leave the start of an ECEA hare scrambles event. being both early and late to a checking station. In order to be competitive in a time keeping enduro, the rider will need to be equipped with time keeping equipment which could be as simple and inexpensive as a watch and odometer or as costly as an enduro computer. In the non-time keeping format, the riders may arrive early at the check-in to a test section with no penalty. The check personnel will ensure they start the test at the proper time, and the penalty points will only be accumulated for lateness at the check-out. The ECEA enduro series features both time keeping and non-time keeping events. Requirements for enduros may also vary depending on the event and constraints of the sponsoring club. Some enduros are “closed course” and are open to unregistered bikes. Other events that utilize public roads or property may require registered and insured vehicles and a motorcycle driver’s license. Entry fees are usually $45-$50, and you will also need to get an ECEA enduro license which is available at no charge at each event. Specific information regarding event format and requirements is available from the sponsoring clubs or the ECEA website, www.ecea.org. A great feature of enduros is the diversity of the entrants. There is a class for every ability, from C (beginner) to AA (pro), just about every age (16 to 70+), and a wide variety of motorcycles, both 2 stroke and 4 stroke (200cc, 250cc and Open). At every event you will find serious racers but just as many casual riders out to enjoy a day in the saddle with their friends. Enduro riding has an etiquette; if a faster rider catches you, make room for them to pass, and then you can both continue to enjoy your day of riding at your comfortable speed and desired level of competition. You decide how you treat the event: as a hotly contested race against the clock where every second counts or as a fun day riding with and laughing at your buddies. Hare Scrambles- For those preferring the thrill of head-to-head competition, the ECEA Championship Hare Scrambles Series offers the highest-quality, most diverse events in the United States. From the sugar sand of South Jersey to the Maryland and Delaware loam to the mountains of Pennsylvania, we’ve got the variety of conditions to hone your skills and challenge your talent and classes for all ages, from peewee (4) to golden masters (70+), and all abilities, from C (beginner) to AA (pro). Peewee and Youth events occur on Saturdays, while the adults compete on Sundays. Hare Scrambles are mass start events where riders complete as many laps as they can over the duration of the event. The courses are generally natural terrain and less

The competitor completing the most laps with the lowest elapsed time is the winner. Riders start in rows staged with those in their competitive class departing at one-minute intervals. The length of the course and duration of the event vary based on age and ability. Peewee courses are usually 1 to 2 miles and are structured for close supervision by parents and sponsoring club personnel. These events are usually 45 minutes long. Youth courses (up to age 17) vary in length from 3 to 6 miles and run for 60 minutes. The adult morning race (C riders and Specialty classes) lasts for 90 minutes, and the courses are usually 5 to 8 miles long. A “Sportsman’s Class,” recently added to the morning event, has evolved into a big hit. The Sportsman’s Class pays no awards or points and is purely for the enjoyment of riding motorcycles and bragging rights. The main event, featuring our B, A, and AA/ Pro riders, runs for 2 hours with courses usually 6 to 12 miles long. All classes, peewee, youth, and adult, with the exception of Sportsman, award their top finishers with trophies, plaques, and merchandise. A and AA riders receive cash awards. The ECEA takes tremendous pride in and places great emphasis on our peewee and youth programs, whose participants have gone on to become top-level national and international competitors. We have been privileged to have many of these champions

return to their roots to encourage our new young guns and teach riding schools at our events. The Association and clubs strive to promote safe, fun events in a family atmosphere while nurturing strong competition and sportsmanship. We believe that the lessons learned in a healthy sporting environment contribute to building character and strong values. There are no motorcycle registration or insurance requirements needed to compete in a Hare Scrambles. An ECEA Hare Scramble number is necessary and can be obtained from the web site (www.ecea.org) or at any event. The rider may choose between an annual number fee or a one-day trial. Event entry fees are $25-$45 depending on the event. All ECEA competitive events are sanctioned by the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA), so membership is required and can be obtained directly from the AMA or at any ECEA event. The AMA offers annual memberships or a one-day trial at a reduced price. Series points are accumulated and tracked in both the ECEA Enduro and Hare Scrambles Series for all competitors. Our champions, young and old, are recognized and rewarded at our annual banquet, which takes place at the completion of each season. The awards banquet has evolved into a must-attend happening featuring tens of thousands of dollars in awards and merchandise, vendor displays, and world-class bench racing. So come on out and check out the ECEA and our great events. We’ve got something for everyone!

KORC – Join Now By: Michael Williams

Keystone Off Road Club was founded in August of 2012 by a few friends who went on trail rides together. Since then we have grown to 49 members from around the state, and we currently have five chapters and are still growing. Keystone Off Road Club (KORC) is a registered nonprofit 501c, and we accept all makes of full-size 4x4s. We started a Facebook page so that we could share with others our adventures, and that page has grown to over 22,000 fans. As we grow in membership, we are getting involved in off-road trade shows and events. Last year we had a booth at the PA Jeeps All Breeds Jeep Show in York, Pa., and we hope to attend more shows as a club in the future. These shows and events are a lot of fun and offer an opportunity to meet fellow off-road enthusiasts. Recently we helped out in a toy drive, which received over 150 toys in just one evening, and that has convinced us to go bigger and better next December with a statewide toy drive for the Toys for Tots program. We are also building an e-commerce site selling 4x4 parts and upgrade modifications, and we hope to sell to the public and offer our members at-cost prices. This store will support club activities and help to make KORC the premier club on the East Coast. Our headquarters are in Lewistown, Pa., but we have chapters around the state which will keep the club local and offer a more at-home feeling instead of one gigantic club where everyone gets lost in the fray. Keystone Off Road Club supports Tread Lightly! and the United Off Road Association because we believe in responsible trail stewardship and preserving the off-road sport for future generations. Our principles include keeping the trails clean, staying on the trails, maintaining a safe environment, saving our members money, and fostering a family atmosphere. Our members include novice off-road drivers with stock 4x4s and experienced off-road drivers with highly modified 4x4s and buggies, and we have the patience to teach the novices who are willing to learn the techniques of off-highway driving. Offhighway driving includes dirt roads, deep mud, big rocks, and snow. Keystone Off

Road Club has a list of vehicle requirements that we believe will help each member be prepared and safe, and those requirements can be found on our membership application at www.keystoneoffroadclub.com membership. We have many club supporters that offer our members a discount at their stores. Club membership dues end up being free with the savings you get from the club supporters; plus, your membership gets you a club shirt and decal. KORC can be found on the internet at www.keystoneoffroadclub.com, on Facebook at Keystone Off Road Club, on Instagram at Keystoneoffroad, and on our forum, which is linked to our website. The Lewistown chapter goes to Rausch Creek and other places on day and weekend trips. This is a great opportunity to bring your family for some fun and memories, so bring your camera. Most club members come back with funny stories to tell and pictures to prove it! And don't worry about getting stuck or breaking down; we have never left anyone behind, and everyone makes it home. On a recent outing, a guest broke a part on his steering, and although we were able to fix it well enough for him to drive back to the trailhead, we were not confident that he should drive it home. He left his 4x4 at the Rausch Creek Park, and we brought him home only to return in the middle of the night with a trailer in tow to retrieve his 4x4 and bring it home. That's how we roll. Facebook has made us world famous, and even some of the big names in the off-road community know who we are and wear our club shirts! That's pretty cool, don't you agree? Keystone Off Road Club is the fastest-growing club, and you should be a part of it! Joining up is really easy and inexpensive. Go to www. keystoneoffroadclub.com and read all about us and see if it might be a club for you!

Hatfield-McCoy Trail System Is... An Economic Development Project • www.trailsheaven.com The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System is a statutory corporation created by the West Virginia Legislature to generate economic development through tourism in nine southern West Virginia counties. As of 2013, the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System covers more than 600 miles of off-road trails in seven of its nine project counties. All of the trail systems are open 365 days a year to ATVs, dirt bikes, and utility vehicles (UTVs). Hatfield-McCoy is also open to 4x4 ORVs at the new Ivy Branch Trail location. Many of the trail systems also offer community-connecting trails that allow visitors to access “ATV-friendly towns” to experience the charm of southern West Virginia. The eight Hatfield-McCoy trail systems are Rockhouse, Buffalo Mountain, Bearwallow, Indian Ridge, Little Coal, Pocahontas, Pinnacle Creek, and Ivy Branch. No matter which trail system you choose, Hatfield-McCoy Trail visitors can expect to find a variety of trails ranging from easy to more difficult. These are not your typical “flatlander” trails, however, and can be a challenge for a first-time rider. For this reason, visitors may choose from a list of ATV-guided tour and rental providers. You can also find a listing of lodging facilities by visiting our lodging page on our website. The overall goal of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails project is to develop a worldclass trail system with an emphasis on safety in each of its nine project counties throughout southern West Virginia. Project estimates have concluded that once the trails are developed and linked, there may be up to 2,000 total miles of trails. The Trails The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System gets its name from the region in southern West Virginia where much of the world famous Hatfield-McCoy feuding took place and where several of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails are now located. The Buffalo Mountain, Bearwallow, and Rockhouse trail systems are located on or near historical sites such as Blair Mountain, Matewan, and the Hatfield Cemetery, where battles, feuding, and funerals once took place. This area of the Appalachian Mountains has always been known for its rugged, mountainous terrain, rich natural resources, and people who have endured here through the decades of our country’s existence and continue to call this area home. When you come to ride at Hatfield-McCoy Trails, you will experience some of the best ATV, UTV, and dirtbike trail riding in the world as well as some of the most wonderful hospitality you'll find anywhere! AMSOIL Arenacross

75 Years 1939-2014 • The Happy Ramblers Story

Baltimore Amateur Arenacross

Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club was established in 1939 by motorcycle enthusiasts who rode their motorcycles on the street and dirt. It did not take long to attract a diverse group of men and women. We have seen pictures of the original group at the Hanover Square in downtown Hanover, Pa.; some of the bikes were built for street, and others had aggressive knobby tires for dirt riding. The group leased a piece of property in West Hanover, Pa., to hold rallies and dirt drags. In 1968, the officers of the club, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Martz and Mr. and Mrs. George Wedge, purchased +/-20 acres of what is now known as 4340 Hanover Road from Lloyd Laugerman and his wife, Dolores; this is the current location of HRMC. The club house was built, and dirt was piled into the corners of the new Happy Ramblers Speedway, and motorcycle flat track racing began to thrive in Hanover. We have been told that the track was converted to European style motocross alongside of the speedway track in 1974-78. In 1978 the speedway track was plowed over to make way for the new motocross era. The current track location covers the third and fourth turns of the original speedway track, and the first and second turns would have been located where the front parking area is currently. Over the past 30 years, Happy Ramblers as a motocross track has hosted many events, with the attendance of great racers like Travis Pastrana, Jason Lawrence, Barry Carsten, Jeff Yentzer, and Tim Schmelyun, as well as many other amateur and pro racers. Happy Ramblers has a rich history in the development of the sport of motorcycle riding and racing. As always, our doors are open to a friendly environment that promotes riding, racing, and learning. Come on out; maybe someday someone will be writing about you in the history of Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club.

1/12/2014 • Baltimore Arena • www.arenacross.com

2014 is HRMC’s 75th Birthday, so be on the lookout for big things to come! In 2014, we will be making investments into our dirt and the facility. In 2014, we are actively in search of corporate sponsors so we can give more to the riders. In 2014, we are slated to turn our track around to offer a new, fresh design. In 2014, we are opening up our track to paid members (limited positions available). In 2014, we are planning to invite past presidents and members back for a special ride day. In 2014, we are planning for an awesome year with great year-end awards. Today, Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club is an organization of riding enthusiasts specializing in motocross racing. Our track is just west of Hanover, Pa., and we hold many events there during the year. We are a "hands-on" group, where every member participates in the maintenance of our facilities. For 75 years, area motorcyclists have enjoyed riding together and developing what is known as the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club. Our club is fortunate to own our property, a clubhouse, and equipment, all for the purpose of maintaining a recreational, educational, motorcycling facility. We are actively seeking new members, and our meetings are the second Thursday of every month. You may call or text us at 717-698-5635 or email us at happyramblersmx@gmail.com. Thank you, HRMC Board of Directors

Pennsylvania's Recreational Use of Land and Water Act

By Fred Brown, initially appearing on the Patriot-News Op-Ed website January 13, 2014 Pennsylvania's Recreational Use of Land and Water Act was passed in 1966 and for the last 47 years has provided landowners a limitation on liability if they open their land for recreational use without charge. The Recreational Use of Land and Water Act of 1966 repealed and replaced a statute that only extended the limitation on liability to woodlands and agricultural lands. The definition of “Land” in the current Act means “... land, roads, water, water courses, private ways and buildings, structures and machinery or equipment when attached to the realty.” This definition extended the limitation on liability to the owner of any “land,” improved or unimproved, regardless of size or location that is free to the public for its use. However, the courts over the years have applied their own interpretations to the provisions of the Act. These interpretations have not always kept to the intent that the authors sought to achieve, thereby limiting the protections to landowners. House Bill 544, introduced by Representative Dan Moul (R) Adams Co., with bi-partisan sponsorship, is intended to restore the Act’s original intent and to update the Act to include certain recreational activities not foreseen at the time the original Act was passed. The bill includes amenities, under the definition of “land,” needed by individuals with disabilities so they will have better access and opportunity to enjoy recreation. House Bill 544 clarifies that “land” can be improved or unimproved, rural or urban of any size and for any use. The bill also addresses the two biggest concerns expressed by landowners: the fear of being sued and the costs associated with being sued by providing for the recovery of attorney fees, if found not to be responsible for the accident or injury of the recreational user. Similar provisions exist in the Recreational Use statutes in the states of Maine and New Hampshire. Opponents of House Bill 544, Representatives Longetti (D), Mercer Co.; Gibbons (D), Lawrence Co.; Neuman (D), Washington Co.; and Haluska (D), Cambria Co. have drafted a total of 18 amendments that would, if passed, eviscerate the bill and render the current Act virtually useless. As an example Representative Neuman’s amendments would eliminate the limitation on liability if the recreational user is under 18, over 65 or if the recreational user has a physical or intellectual disability or a mental health condition. For the last 47 years the limitation on liability has been uniformly applied to all recreational users. The Longetti, Haluska and Gibbons amendments pick away at different provisions being proposed in House Bill 544, while a few take a wholesale swipe at gutting many of the provisions being proposed. Gibbons’ amendment would eliminate the Act’s protection for local governments, further exposing them/us to increased liability and costs of frivolous suits. The net effect

of these amendments would be to reverse 47 years of success in providing greater access to recreation of all types on public and in particular private “land.” The efforts of Representatives Longetti, Haluska, Gibbons and Neuman would create such an extraordinary disincentive to any landowner, public or private, for allowing access to their land for any reason. Leading, I would argue, to closures and postings of many recreational venues currently available. These amendments must be withdrawn or defeated when considered by the Legislature. Instead of protecting recreational users, these amendments would eventually result in fewer, if any, lands open free to the public. It is unfathomable that anyone would propose what these three legislators have proposed in terms of amendments to House Bill 544. If they don’t like the bill I would just urge them to vote no. As of this writing, 26 organizations comprised of state government agencies, recreational user groups, local government associations and recreational businesses support House Bill 544. Only one opposes it, Trial Lawyers. I caution that if all legislators vote to support the amendments, I believe it won’t be long before they realize their efforts will prove to be among the worst decisions ever for the future of recreation in Pennsylvania. On the other hand, if you want to see more recreational venues for all manner of recreation, then vote to oppose the Longetti, Haluska, Gibbons and Neuman amendments and vote in support of House Bill 544. If you want to provide additional incentives for landowners to provide access for individuals with disabilities, then vote to oppose the Longetti, Haluska, Gibbons and Neuman amendments and vote in support of House Bill 544. If you want to support responsible recreational use and help to take the pressure off of public lands, then vote to oppose the Longetti, Haluska, Gibbons and Neuman amendments and vote in support of House Bill 544. Fred Brown is a Legislative Advisor to the Pennsylvania OffHighway Vehicle Association. Ronald J. Winter Suspension Maintenance By: Denny Mann

With the ground snowy white and the temperatures below freezing the thought of riding my motorcycle is low on my priority list. When I received the article deadline notice, I first thought I would resume my articles in the spring. I couldn’t ride if I wanted to; my bikes are dismantled for their year-end maintenance. Then it hit me: why not write an article on my winter maintenance ritual? Every year over the winter months I freshen up the suspension on my bikes. Factors such as how much or how hard I’ve ridden them over the summer dictate the amount of maintenance I perform. For instance, since I have a Dual Sport bike and a Race bike, the two are on different cycles for maintenance. My Dual Sport Bike I give the full treatment every other year, and the Race bike I service yearly. This year both bikes are getting the full treatment. Since the two bikes offer good examples of different suspension types, hopefully this article will help a wider audience. The two bikes in this article are a G450X BMW with Marzocchi forks and an Ohlin rear shock on a link-less rear suspension as well as a EC200 GasGas with Marzocchi forks and an Ohlin rear shock on a linked rear suspension. My goal for each bike is to grease all bearings in the suspension and steering, take the forks and shocks to a service center for new fluids and a cleaning, and then reassemble for a new season of riding. Let’s start with the front end since they are identical with both bikes. Place the bike on a sturdy stand and remove the front wheel, headlight, front fender, fork protectors, and brake caliper. I leave the front brake and caliper attached, and with a

strap I hang the caliper out of the way. After the forks are removed, the next step is getting access to the steering bearing. The handlebars are removed with all of the controls left on the bars. Then, simply fold the bars back onto the seat; I hold them in place with a strap. After removing the steering stem nut, the top and bottom bearings are removed and repacked with grease. Pay close attention to the condition of all the bearings and replace them if needed. After the forks return from the shop, begin the reassembly process with the steering stem first. Pay close attention to the torque on the bottom stem nut. The bottom stem nut is made snug, but allows easy movement for turning right to left. Then make the top nut snug, allowing play for the fork tube alignment. Slide in the serviced forks and torque the clamp bolts to proper settings. Now go back and continue to tighten the top steering stem nut to hold everything in place. Finish the front end by installing the handlebars, fork protectors, and brake caliper, as well as the headlight and front fender. Now to the rear suspension service work; since I have two types, we will start with the most difficult. My GasGas is very similar to the rear suspension that Kawasaki used in the late 1990s. To gain access to the rear shock I remove the rear wheel, seat, gas tank, exhaust, and side covers. Then with the top and bottom shock bolts removed, the shock will slide out the right side of the bike. To clean and grease the suspension and swing arm bearings the swing arm and rocker arm must be removed. First, I remove the brake pedal, caliper and front drive sprocket. As you can see I leave the chain on the swing arm with the caliper only

removed, as I did on the front caliper. After the swing arm bolt is removed, the connecting rods come off and allow access to all six bearings in the rear suspension. The smallest bearing is the most likely to fail, and it is attached to the bottom shock bolt. Grease the six bearings and reassemble, back tracking your disassembly steps. Now, for the easiest phase of suspension maintenance: link-less rear suspension. This process takes only 15 minutes to perform. The only thing that needs to be removed prior to shock removal is the mud flap in front of the rear wheel. Then the top and bottom shock bolts come off and the shock will slide out the side of the bike. The swing arm service is the same process as with the linked suspension, but the only bearing requiring grease are the two swing arm bearings. Reassemble, back tracking your disassembly steps. To ensure that your suspension set up is the same as last season always document your settings. Prior to getting the actual service work completed on your shock and forks, follow the steps below. 1. On your forks and shock compression, as well as your rebound adjusters, count the clicks clockwise into seat and

write down the settings. Then back out the compression and rebound to their original settings. 2. Measure or count the threads down to the compression nut located above the shock spring and write the information down in your log book. By following all the steps above you will be prepared for the 2014 season, riding with smooth and reliable suspension and with a feeling of confidence that your bike will handle like a new one.

First off, Operation Homefront was a new charity for us. We used the proceeds from our Fall Crawl event on Oct. 26, 2013, to put toward a $1,000 donation to the PA and DE branches of Operation Homefront. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Operation Homefront was formed in February 2002. It was developed to support the families of deployed service members immediately following 9/11. Operation Homefront is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, and has evolved into a major nonprofit. The organization currently provides services to military families across the nation, with 23 locations serving 43 states. The national office handles cases in states that do not have their own local offices. The majority of our clients are the lowest-paid service members, the E-1 through E-6 enlisted ranks. Our next event was a collection for Toys for Tots. This year we collected enough toys to fill a Prius and $380 to buy more toys. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) notfor-profit charity, is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November, and December each year and to distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to lessfortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. And finally, we donated $500 to the Johnstown Women's Help Center (WHC). On Nov 26, 2013, the Big Rubbers Custom 4x4 Club donated $500 to the WHC. It is the first time the club donated to the WHC and was suggested to do so by a club member. The WHC is a nonprofit human service agency contracted by the state Department of Public Welfare to provide services to adult victims of domestic violence and their dependent children throughout Cambria and Somerset counties. Established 35 years ago, the WHC is one of the pioneers of the domestic violence movement in Pennsylvania. The counseling center was established in 1979, the emergency shelter component was implemented in 1981, and a satellite office was opened in Somerset in 1985. It is the commitment of the WHC to support the right of an individual not to be battered or abused and to strive for the personal growth and development of all victims. The program recognizes abuse as taking multiple forms that include physical, psychological, sexual, social, and economic abuse, as well as stalking. Victims are assisted via provision of options, access to community resources, educative and supportive services, counseling, advocacy efforts, and emergency shelter.

Sportin’ with Sprocket By: Jimmy “Sprocket” Kann

Hello again from the hills of central Pennsylvania! I hope this article finds all our readers well and warm with winter being in full swing. With most everyone that I know snuggled down in their homes for the long winter days ahead, I can’t help but to reflect back on the year 2013! This was a year of many ups and downs with the downs not really being that bad at all. The biggest down for me again was the fact that this was yet another year that I was unsuccessful at harvesting a deer for my freezer! Luckily, my youngest son Chase is still the lucky one of our bunch and able to connect so that at least something was able to be put into the freezer. If you can remember back several articles I said that since my boys started hunting, I have only gotten one deer because I usually had one of them in tow, and they always got to do the shooting. Well, the time has come and hopefully the curse of the junior hunter will no longer plague me! Chase will turn 16 this coming June, and he will be on his own! Thinking of this also has its down side though too. Looking back over the years and watching my boys grow from wide-eyed and bushytailed new hunters that looked barely big enough to carry the gun they were hunting with to seasoned young men that know how to handle most situations afield in an ethical way, seems to bring an era to a close. This coming next year will be odd in the fact that it will seem that both boys no longer need to be with me to continue the never ending quest for the freezer filler we all look for. I can only hope that they have learned well from what I have taught them and will someday be ready to teach their own.

So much for the deer season of 2013/2014. The new excitement that is growing the fastest for the Kann Hunting Clan is the Pa. Bear Season! The 2012 Bear Season was the first time I had taken my boys to hunt bear. What a fantastic and memorable year that was as well. The first day of that year found my son Hunter looking down the barrel of his gun and shooting a bear that had just jumped out of our drive. Unfortunately, we could not find it after an extensive search. Then Monday morning, first drive of the day, found me taking a shot at a bear no more than 50 yards from the spot that Hunter had shot. It didn’t take that bear long to high tail it down the mountain and then be shot by someone else. Strike Two for 2012! Fast forward to November 23, 2013. Again my boys and I trekked to my cabin in Lycoming County to try again to harvest a bruin. That Saturday morning will stay in my memory banks forever! We were setting up for the first drive of the day. With Chase still needing to be close enough to me that he could take verbal instructions, we took the first spot for the watchers. Hunter continued up the ravine for another 100 yards and took his stand. As we stood and waited for the drivers to do their jobs, we heard a shot farther up the ravine. As we stood ready, we heard across the radio “Bear Down!” We knew then that someone in our party had gotten a bear from this drive. As we continued to wait, we began to see our drivers crest the top of the mountain they were driving. At one point there were about five drivers all standing together at the top, when all of the sudden gunshots rang out, and the drivers all scattered. Someone was yelling “Bear up, bear up,” but no one was seeing anything. Then all of a sudden this bear comes running full speed from around the point of this mountain! With Chase being first stander, he was looking for the bear in the scope but couldn’t get a shot through the brush. As it continued in front of me, I, too, could not get a shot due to too much vegetation and trees. I started yelling at Hunter that the bear was running his way, and when I turned to see what he was doing; his first shot went up the mountain. By that time the bear had already run past him and was running to his right across the ridge. After the first shot, the bear turned and started running down the mountain towards Hunter and I. Hunter shot three more times, and when the bear crossed the creek we were standing at, it stopped and looked around. It was standing no more than 10 yards from Hunter. He pulled up his rifle, crosshairs on the chest, pulled the trigger to hear the worst sound in the world, CLICK! Out of shells! How nice. NOT! The bear took off, and I was able to get a shot at it as I was wondering why Hunter had not taken the shot. The bear continued up the ridge and stopped again to look around, I gave one glance in Hunter’s direction to see what he was doing, found the bear in the scope once more, and when she started to take another step up the mountain, the ole 45/70 barked and over backwards the bear went tumbling down the mountain. After skinning out the bruin, it was determined that the bear was hit three other times besides the shot from me that stopped it.Two of the shots that hit it were from Hunter as he was the only other person that shot at this bear with a rifle. The third shot was from one of the drivers from a pistol and was hit in the foot. I have been in pursuit of the Pa. black bear for over 30 years, my quest ended in 2013! But I will not stop now! We will be back at it next year again! Until next time, keep all four on the ground and pointed in the right direction!

Hello from Hyner Mountain SMC. Just wanted to let everyone know what has been happening up on the mountain. Hope all of you had a very happy and safe New Year’s Day and that 2014 will be a great year! Well, we all got some early season riding sometime late in December. Some of the trails up around the lodge had about a foot of snow on them, and the grooming staff from both Sproul and Tiadaghton State Forest had them in real good condition. Some of our members put on a few hundred miles with some of the best riding in a long time. Now for the bad news, it did not last long; sixty-six degrees in late December crazy! Well, that’s snowmobiling in Pennsylvania, ride it while you got it. We were able to ride a little right after the New Year. The riding was just ok…. some good….some not so good. We have to just wait patiently to see what Old Mother Nature dishes up for us for the rest of the winter. As I was writing this, there wasn’t any white gold on the ground; but hopefully by now, there is plenty. Well that’s about all for now. Talk to ya next month. THINK SNOW!

Hello Off-Road Fans, This is Zachary Camp, your motocross chaplain, bringing you the almost-too-good-to-be-true news (the Gospel) of Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world. This is not a religious article; this is a chance to look into the supernatural world, a chance to look at life in a new light. I have been writing MRA articles for Jim Bull for several years now. I want to personally welcome all the new readers from the off-road world: "Welcome!" I am not sure if you believe the Bible and that Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the world, but I do. I’ve spent the last 15 years learning about the Bible, God, Jesus, miracles, healing, and victorious living. When you find that the Bible is true, the wisdom found in it can change your life for the better. There is supernatural power available through the Spirit of Jesus Christ. You know something? You and I were made to do super things and have them become normal. You were made to have a life of winning, not losing; you were designed by God to live a life of love and not selfishness. You are very loved by God, and He wants you to be a person at rest, not at stress. What is the reason man exists?? John 17: 3, And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Most scholars who have searched the world and the Scriptures have come to agree that the Bible is true and has a common theme that Jesus came to redeem man. Specifically, that Jesus came to give us back something that we lost. What is it that we lost? Intimacy. Our supreme purpose for existing is to have a personal friendship with God, the Creator of the world. So His friendship includes conversation and fellowship and is the most important thing to God. He cares more about hanging out with you than He does about all the rules we think we have to follow to please Him. Don't get me wrong; God is about us being holy in our actions, but the truth is that living holy is truly the best way to live, and it brings the best things into our lives. Being holy does not mean being boring. Peace out till next month, Chaplain Zachary A. Camp
