Letter from the Editor

I’d like to start this month by wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. I know that personally I try to be grateful every day for the things that I have. At times I find myself dwelling on the things that I want or on things that I can’t change. Let’s all try this Thanksgiving, and every day after, to be thankful for the things we do have. Especially turkey to eat and ATVs to ride, or trucks or motorcycles, or, yes, even snowmobiles too. Whatever your fancy is, let’s ride. OK – so, yes, that is a snowmobile on our cover. Yes, I know it doesn’t have wheels; well, maybe kinda underneath where the track is (that’s the thing that makes it go), so you get the picture. We thought since it’s inevitable that winter will come whether we like it or not, that we include our friends who like to ride the white waves, as I call it. Yes, it has an engine, and, yes, it goes through the woods, so I say, I’m in. No, seriously folks, Rec Rider is all about recreational riding, and we are headed into the PA Powersports Show that is put on by the PA State Snowmobile Association, and, as I mentioned, it is that time of the year, so we wanted to invite the sledders in. Actually, if you’ve never rode before, it is a blast; I recommend you give it a try. If you’re already one of the faithful, then you know what I mean. Welcome to our pages. Inside this issue you’ll find most of our regular coverage. There is ATV and truck coverage, along with the local motorcycle racing. In addition, we have some info on snowmobiling and where you can ride those, too. The sections are not complete, but we have to start somewhere. As always, we are a work in progress. Please check out our info on New York; they have some great riding areas, and you can really benefit there in the winter too, just in case we don’t get the white stuff. For snowmobilers, the early forecasts look good. Cold and snowy from the Mason-Dixon line north. That’ll keep you running. As always, no matter what you ride, please pay attention to specified riding times. Certain areas are offlimits to certain vehicles this time of year. So let’s all work together to keep all of our trails open for all of us. There is power in numbers, and strength is what we need. Please enjoy the issue, and we’ll see you next time.

CMATVA Rodeo

September 28, 2013 By: Henry J. Sorgen IV - President of CMATVA Central Mountains ATV Association held their 10th Annual Rodeo Event on September 28 at Flat Run Speedway in Allport, Pa. We had 44 riders compete in six different events, including The Clover Leaf, Flag Race, Key Hole, Obstacle Course and the Mud Bog. We had a larger crowd this year to watch the riders perform the challenging tasks. This year we added “grannie panties” to our obstacle course, where the rider had to stop at a station, get off their machine, put on an oversized pair of “grannie panties” over top of their riding pants and then continue through the obstacle course, stopping and removing them before crossing View more event the finish line. The crowd seemed photos at: www.cmatva.org to enjoy the added feature to the obstacle course and so did the riders. We also added a battery operated class to the lineup this year and had three battery operated units running in all six events. It was great to see the younger generation getting involved in the sport that we all love. One of the highlights for the little kids was Paul Eggler pulling the club’s barrel train. Paul towed the barrel train for 8.5 miles, which included a lot of trips around the parking area and fields. We would like to thank all of our sponsors that donated prizes and money. Without our sponsors we wouldn’t have been able to make this yearly event happen. We would also like to give a special thank you to Williamsport Honda, Carnes Equipment, and Revved for God, which had a display during the Rodeo Event. We would also like to thank Dom and Tonya Orwick for donating use of the race track, where our club has held the rodeo event for the past 10 years. Additionally, I would like to thank all the club members that helped to make this another successful event. Without our hard working and dedicated club members we wouldn’t have made everything run as smoothly and problem free. We all work as a team for the benefit of our club to reach our one goal of providing a safe family oriented ATV riding club. We hope everyone that came to the rodeo had a great time and enjoyed the different events and great food, and hopefully you walked away with some of the great prizes that were being given away. We hope to see you again next year. Bring your friends with you. We have posted about 300 pictures on our website, www.cmatva. org, for everyone to see what our club rodeo is all about. Come join us on one of our club rides for free so you can see what our ATV riding club is all about. Join now and we will include your 2014 membership. Memberships are $10.00 for a single person or $15.00 for a family membership.

Ready to Start the Winter Riding Season Sled Shed TV.com • By: Indy October is here, and the weather is getting cooler; the leaves are changing to their beautiful colors, and the riding is awesome this time of year. Soon the leaves will be off the trees and our lawns, and our favorite riding areas will turn into a beautiful blanket of white. I love riding ATVs, but when the weather turns colder, my mind starts racing, waiting for the first flake, the first inch, the first rideable snow! Yes, I am a snowmobiler, and I love winter. Maybe some of you do as well? Some of us hide out, working our jobs all spring, summer, and fall, just so we can put on 2,000-plus miles over the winter on our snowmobiles. Granted our snow here in Pennsylvania the last few years has not been so good, but we frequent many state trails when it is possible to ride here. What are our favorite trails here in PA, you ask? Well, I would suggest a few trails, the first being NEP Sno Trails located in Forest City, Pa. It’s not a state-run trail, but is run by a local snowmobile club, and you will have to pay to ride here. They do, however, have some of the best-kept trails in Pennsylvania, running east to Honesdale, Pa., and north almost to the New York border. The NEP Sno Trails boast over 125 miles of fun, scenery, food and fuel. Next would have to be Lackawanna State Forest, located just north of Thornhurst, Pa. While this trail is small, it is a great day trip for a ride. We also frequent Mile Run, Pa., located just off of I-80 near Williamsport, Pa. This trail is a great place to take in some beautiful scenery. Split into a north and south side, you can easily put in a 100+ mile day and still have time to stop and take a lot of great pictures. I could mention a few more, but these are our favorite local trails to hit

when we’re home. Where are we when we’re not in PA? That’s easy: New York! We also ride other states in the Northeast, but N.Y. is like our second home December through March, taking a week here and there to sneak into Maine as well. But N.Y. for us offers the closest, most economical places to ride outside of PA. Tug Hill is the HOT spot for N.Y., but there are so many other areas to ride there. If you were to cross the Pennsylvania/ New York border, you could find a trail just about anywhere and drop your sled and ride all the way to Canada if you wanted. Bag trips are not uncommon among riders in N.Y., in fact I know of a few who have ridden from N.Y. to Canada, and a few who have ridden from N.Y. to New Hampshire as well. The destinations are endless for snowmobilers in N.Y. Now I know a few of you have ridden there, and I will admit Tug Hill area is hard-hit with riders, especially on weekends, but Tug Hill is only one place to ride. Old Forge, N.Y., is another great place to ride out of in N.Y.; weekends are a little busy, but on weekdays you usually have the trails to yourself. I have been involved with snowmobiling since the ’70s when my grandfather owned a Massey Ferguson Ski Whiz dealership. I took somewhat of a different path in my late teens, racing supercross and hare scrambles in the late ’80s, and then returning to the sport of snowmobiling in 2000. That led to doing what I love to do today, making videos for Sled Shed T.V. So when the snow gets deep and the ATVs are put away, please remember, riding season isn’t over, it’s just begun! Think Snow!

Sleepy Hollow DEP Pipes - 2 Stroke Pro Shootout By: John E. Sherer III • www.iso-photo.com Sleepy Hollow MX Park might have been mistaken for a lumberjack festival if you were a neighboring property owner on Sept. 18 to 22. The sound of two stroke motors reverberated out of the hollow, but no wood was cut on this weekend! It was the DEP Pipes 2 Stroke Shootout Pro MX Race. Racing covered two days, with Saturday’s racing schedule including classes from 50 (4-6) stock all the way up through the ranks to 55+ years of age. Also included were the vintage classes, pre 75s, evo 75-80, 80s, 90s, with one of the oldest bikes spotted there being a Hodaka, if you remember them? Sunday’s venue included a $10,000 pro purse for 125A and 250A riders and 20 minute +2 lap motos in the 125-144 Pro and 250 Open Pro races. The 250 Open Pro turned up the heat, as if it wasn’t hot enough already at this event. The gate was stacked with the likes of James Decotis (double class winner 250 Open Pro and 125 -144 Pro), Jason Brooks, Bobby Marshall, Michael Mcdade, Broc Schmelyun, and Joey Peters. When the gate was dropped, it was anybody’s guess on who would prevail. In the end, James Decotis, going 2nd and 1st in his motos, would win the overall. Gregory Pamart doubled up with overalls in both 25+ A and 40+ Senior A. In 35+ A, (2 stroke Todd) Todd Weindel grabbed the holeshots and stayed out front to record two 1st-place finishes. Sleepy Hollow started this event two seasons ago. Witnessing the first one and seeing how much it has grown in two years, I’d recommend that this is one event you must add to your schedule for next season. Thanks to Jere Swarr, the sponsors, spectators, and riders for making this event a class act!

James Decotis finished 1st in 125-144cc Pro and 250 Open Pro.

Alex Jeffery from Ontario, Canada, finished with two 1st-place finishes in 250 Open C.

The Motocross Pages The MX scene has been red hot to finish up the season here in the great Northeast. In late September, Doublin Gap hosted its Rider Appreciation Day at its facility near Shippensburg, Pa. Riders got to do some racing for free and lots of extra goodies were available at the riders’ meeting. That same weekend, the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association raced at Budds Creek and held the first-ever Kevin Crine Memorial Race. Crine got his start with MAMA and went on to great accomplishments in the Pro ranks. Crine was taken from us too early in life from a tragic automobile accident in 2006, and the organization wanted to pay tribute to him and his family. We then moved onto the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club in Hanover, Pa., in early October, where they hosted a Mini MX Warrior Shootout. Young racers went bar-to-bar and were treated with 6-foot trophies for their class-winning accomplishments. Then mid-month, we hit the Pagoda Motorcycle Club for the sixth annual Big Bucks and Women’s Open weekend. This event was a Pro/ Am race with a $5,000 payout to the pros. The racing was red hot after several inches of rain pelted the area just days prior to the race. New Jersey native Joey Peters would be the man to beat in the Open A division, leading and winning both motos wire-to-wire. Most of the outdoor racing will be wrapped up by the time you’re reading this, but stay tuned to our pages. A little birdie told me that there will be a new indoor riding facility opening up before winter hits right in our own back yard. To see results and photos from most events, head over to: www.recrider.com.

The Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association Promotes and Protects… Snowmobiling….Pennsylvania’s Coolest Ride Lori Elliott, Executive Director As our logo states, snowmobiling is Pennsylvania’s coolest ride, and the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association (PSSA) is the only statewide association in Pennsylvania whose sole purpose and focus is snowmobiling. Our office is located in Harrisburg at 908 N. Second St., and we offer many services and benefits at a very affordable price of $25 per year for individuals and families and $35 per year for clubs and businesses. One of PSSA’s major events of the year is hosting the “PA Powersports Show.” We provide an opportunity for the outdoor recreation enthusiast to find new and used snowmobiles, ATVs, trailers, motorcycles, used snowmobile clothing and other snowmobiling accessories! This year’s show is coming up Friday, Oct. 25, through Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Lebanon Expo Center. Admission is only $8.00 and is good all weekend! In addition to seeing the new equipment models, highlights of the show include a live auction on Saturday, Oct. 26, for items such as a snowmobiling trip to Yellowstone and giveaway drawings on Oct. 27 for a 2014 Ski-Doo snowmobile and two Blizzard trailers! We also offer a Youth Safety Class for ages 10 to 15 to be held on Oct. 26 during the show. Preregistration is required by calling the PSSA office at 1-888-411-PSSA (7772). If you are interested in vintage snowmobiles, check out the show and swap meet on Oct. 27. In regard to the state association itself, PSSA’s membership encompasses over 3,500 individuals, 54 snowmobile clubs and approximately 85 businesses across the state associated with snowmobiling. Its mission statement reads: “PSSA is a statewide membership organization committed to enhancing the Pennsylvania snowmobiling experience of family recreation, fellowship, and tourism, by striving to assure high quality trails and safe, environmentally-responsible recreational use of snowmobiles.” For 45 years, PSSA has worked hard toward fulfilling this mission. It started in 1969 by a small group in Marienville, Pa., whose efforts “headed off” undesirable restrictive legislation. Since that time, PSSA has pushed for legislation that protects snowmobiling rights and safety and enhances the snowmobiling experience. We continue to monitor state legislation today as one of the services we provide. Successful legislation that PSSA has obtained includes: • “Recreational Use of Land & Water Act,” encouraging landowners to make their land and water available to the public for recreation by limiting their liability. • “PA Surface Transportation Assistance Act,” making the 102” wide trailer legal on PA highways • “One-Time Vintage Snowmobile Permit,” making riding vintage snowmobiles in vintage events legal. • “Title 75: Snowmobile/All-Terrain Vehicle Law” to protect snowmobile riders. In addition, PSSA is a member of the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA). Pennsylvania snowmobilers benefit from ACSA’s monitoring of snowmobiling issues at the national level. PSSA plays an important role in the legislative process by issuing alerts on urgent issues at national and state levels. We rally snowmobilers to contact their legislators or attend municipal or township meetings. The PSSA also supports snowmobile trails by obtaining grants to financially assist snowmobile clubs to repair, maintain and groom snowmobile trails. We also provide trail signage to ensure safety. The total amount of assistance that PSSA has obtained over the years is over $380,000.

Examples of other services and benefits that PSSA provides include: • Our website, www.pasnow.org, is a “one-stop shop” for snowmobiling information for Pennsylvania. We have images from webcams in key areas of the snow-belt streaming to our website. We also provide lists of snowmobile clubs and business supporters, discounts by our business members, and snowmobile laws and other resources, and we promote events for our clubs and business members. • We have a Facebook page called “Pennsylvania Snowmobiling” with over 9,500 fans at www.facebook.com/pasnow to promote snowmobiling in PA and to interact with other snowmobilers and tourism agencies. • Our monthly “Keystone Snowmobiler” is the only newspaper that publishes snowmobiling information 12 months a year. • We have a separate “Snow Angel” charity fund. Members donate to this fund, and our regional directors nominate children with special needs whose families need financial assistance. Families of children up to the age of 18 can receive a $500 grant from this fund, and our directors give small grants to families in need each year for the holidays. We grant approximately $5,000 per year through this fund! PSSA is proud to promote and protect snowmobiling in Pennsylvania. As the word “association” is defined, we are: 1. a group of people having a common purpose or interest, and 2. friendship or companionship These can be found in the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association. To join PSSA, go to www.pasnow.org to join with a credit card, email pasnow@wannerassoc. com, or call 1-888-411-PSSA (7772). Hope to see you at the PA Powersports Show on Oct. 25 to 27 at the Lebanon Expo Center!

Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association Heads North to Canada By: Joe Onyon Recently, I and three other members of the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association made the five hour trip north to Eastern Canadian Outfitters, located in Chemin de lac Mer-Bleue, Cayamant, in the province of Quebec in Canada. The camp’s motto of “Where the pavement ends, Adventure Begins” couldn’t be more true. Upon our arrival at our camp, it didn’t take us long to offload the ATVs and line up the fishing gear along the side of our cabin. Then it was time to make the big decision of what to do first. Do we ride the ATVs or head out on the lake for a little bass fishing? It didn’t take long until we had our poles and tackle in hand and headed down to the dock to locate our boats. With the motor warmed up, we decided to head across Lac Mer Bleue, which was the main lake located just down from our cabin. After a short run across the lake, our lines were wet and before we knew it we had smallmouth bass in the boat. The bass were running a little on the small side but were real fighters. After working several back waters and some awesome rock piles, it was time to head back to camp for dinner. The best part of our afternoon fishing trip was that all of the fish caught were all released to be caught another day. After a dinner of burgers and dogs, it was time to head out for an ATV ride to see if we could find our way to Lac Boulard and Lac Rondeau, which is the smallest of the three lakes guided by the lodge host. These two lakes are only accessible by ATVs. At both of these locations there was a boat with oars ready for individuals to use for fishing. After a short distance into the woods, we started to encounter cherry tree limbs that had been pulled over along the trails, and we found out it had been caused by the bears looking for and eating the sour cherries. We made our way to find the offshoot trails that lead to each of the lakes, but it was getting late and very dark so we headed back to camp and called it a night. Our first morning came early on Saturday and it was time to hit Lac Mer Bleue in search of smallmouth bass and with a little luck maybe one of those Canadian northern pike. We spent the morning working the shore line and catching smallmouths and a couple of small northern pike. The fishing was light but steady, and we ended the morning with a limit of bass, which were all released. The other two in our party had hooked a couple of northern pike, with one of them cutting the line and stealing a lure. The sun was high and hot, and it was time to head back to camp for some lunch. After lunch it was time to secure the fishing gear on the ATVs and head out for a ride to Lac Boulard. It wasn’t long until we located the offshoot

that led to the lake, where we found our boat. Before long we had the gear loaded and headed out for an afternoon of some awesome bass fishing. It wasn’t long before we started to hit the bass, but once again they were on the small size. We continued to work the lake, and before we knew it, we started to slam some real lunkers. We ended the afternoon with about 12 bass stretching our lines, with several bass in the three-pound class and a few that slammed the four-pound range, with six of them measuring 17” to 18”. It was an afternoon of fishing that we will be talking about for years. With the action being so hot, we lost track of time, and before we knew it, we were loading the poles and tackle back on the ATVs and heading back to camp. The other half of our fishing group spent the afternoon fishing on Lac Mer Bleue and continued to work the shore line and the islands that dotted the lake. As on the previous day, they continued to hit the bass, which still were on the small size. They did manage to catch a couple of bigger fish and reeled in a couple of nice northern pike measuring in the 22” to 24” range. As in all of our outings, all the fish were released to grow a little bigger. We all had a big feast of barbecue chicken, salt potatoes and corn before heading out on our wheelers to find the ice cream spot. We headed out to town on the main roads, which is allowed and legal to do in Cayamant and most surrounding towns. We noticed that the local townspeople had a spot in their garages for their cars and then another spot for their ATVs. We rode about five miles into town, stopped at one store and gassed up for the next day and then headed down to the store where we first got our fishing licenses to get an ice cream. They serve soft serve sundaes, but only one kind (caramel). We had to sit there and talk about our day of fishing tales with each other and eat our sundaes (what a dream). On our last day of fishing, we split up to fish Lac Mer Bleue and Lac Boulard. The fishing was about the same as the day before, with Lac Boulard producing the bigger fish, but both were plentiful with bass that everyone enjoyed reeling in. We met back at camp for lunch, and then it was time to venture out into the woods for an afternoon of ATV trail riding. After turning off the main dirt road and getting past the gate, it was an afternoon of riding some awesome off-road trails. We spent the afternoon riding the trails, and it wasn’t long before we came across our first bear feeding station. It was our first time to see how they set up these stations and bait the barrels with treats for the bears. At one of the bait stations you could see the bite marks in the barrel and also claw marks that were about six to seven feet high up on the trees. The trails were natural and

you could not tell that anyone had really been there before us. After a short break, we were off again hitting the trails. The trails were well laid out, and they each ended at a location of a bear hunting station. By the time we got back to camp, our wheelers had another 70 miles on them. On our last night it was time to cook up all of the remaining food and have one well deserved meal. We invited the camp groundkeeper and guide. We shared one awesome meal and spent time finding out so much more about Eastern Canadian Outfitters. We learned about the ATV trail system in the area and how Canada and the province of Quebec runs it’s ATV trail system in whole. We found out that an ATV rider can buy a yearly permit through the province for $160.00, and then he is allowed to ride all the trails in Canada. The province then supplies funds to the area trail clubs to maintain the trails. People that buy trail permits and enter the trail system have approximately 14,000 miles of ATV trails at their disposal. If you are looking to have a great experience of ATV riding and fishing like we did, check out Eastern Canadian Outfitters. It’s a great place and great experience for all.

Big Al’s Race Track: Car Race Driver’s Perspective • By: Tabb Felty • Pictures by Tabbs Photography At Big Al’s Racetrack on a beautiful autumn day in early October, you pull in and all you see is cars everywhere. At this particular race, though, we have six cars to complete our racing crew, but people have come from all over for the last car race of the season. Over 50 cars are here for the race, which is broken down into four heats. There are at least 11 cars per class, and that means that there are at least 10 other competitors all out for the same thing: a win. Big Al’s is a dirt track with a fence covering the straightaway for spectators; this fence has also helped a few cars from flipping into the crowd. There’s a quick drivers’ meeting, and then the first group is lining up. I am in the first heat along with my brother and our friends, and the pressure is on. Not only am I a woman competing with all men, but now I am up against my brother and his friends. Am I good enough to compete against them? Will I fail in front of a growing audience, or will I come out a winner? These thoughts run through my mind as I line up next to my competitors while the adrenaline starts pumping through my veins. The last thought in my head before I start the race is, “I will make it through this race a winner.” The parade lap is done, the green flag drops, and we are our way. It had rained the night before, so the track is extra slick and I have worn-down tires as I head into the first turn. I hit the turn and keep sliding as I try to yank the wheel to make the turn and get ahead of the car beside me. All I hear are engines roaring and metal crunching as cars are smashing into each other because of the slick mud. My passenger is yelling to me, “You are ahead of them; you got room. Go! Go! Go!” All of the sudden, I slam on my brakes as cars are stopping in front of me, and I am outraged. “Why the heck are they braking in front of me on a racetrack?” I think. Then I see the car that flipped when it hit the bank, and my hands start shaking. Helmets are ripped off

as multiple drivers are clamoring out of their cars to try and help. I am so scared. I see a couple people pinned under the car; then I hear a smashing sound as people try and break the windows to get the victims free. The car gets flipped right-side up, and the passengers are free and they are all OK. Relief floods through me with each breath. The race starts again with another parade lap, and then I am in racing mode, all thoughts on beating the person in front of me. Then I hear another smash, and some choice words fly loose as someone hits me from behind, but I barely feel the impact as I try and keep the other cars at bay. Round and round we go as cars start dying left and right, creating more obstacles for me to navigate around, but I am ruthless. No way I am going down without a fight. All the years of riding quads and dune buggies come flooding into my mind, and I am at peace; the advice from my dad from years of riding also keeps me at ease and lets me know that these drivers better not underestimate my skill. The smell of burning antifreeze is fresh in the air as different cars are fighting to survive, and then, it’s all over. I did not win, but I finished. It’s satisfying enough to know that I can compete against other ruthless drivers. A buddy is stuck in the mud, so I push him to the trailer while I pass people hooting and hollering; it’s the best feeling in the world. Then all of the sudden, I am surrounded by friends talking about how the race went and how crazy everything was and yelling, “Can you believe that wreck?” This was only the intensity of one race; they were all intense, but these are just the feelings I had when I was racing. This was the last car race for the year, but keep an eye out for the schedule for next year and pick up a car; it’ll be worth it. The next race is a wheel-towheel race, which is another great race to come out to; it’ll definitely be worth your while.

SNOW BASH – BLIZZARD 500 By: Deb Johnson • www.SledFreak.com The third weekend in September every year, you will smell the race fuel in the air in Ohio, N.Y., at the annual Snow Bash – Blizzard 500. This grass drag event is sponsored by Blizzard Manufacturing, with featured races sponsored by Woody’s Traction, D&D Powersports, Williams Sledsports and North East SnoX Series. But Carl Irwin and the gang at the Ohio Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club are the ones who put in all the hard work it takes to make this event what it is. This year, Saturday’s weather was not looking so good. With an 80 percent chance of rain I went anticipating it to be a washout. Boy, was everyone thankful that the weatherman was wrong. The rain held out until after 5 p.m. and racing for the day was almost over. Saturday turned out to be a beautiful, partly sunny day; a little windy, but that didn’t matter so much. Hundreds of people came out to enjoy not only the awesome racing but also to check out the many vendors on hand, the overflowing swap meet

and vintage sled displays, and, of course, the great food being served – especially the chicken barbecue! Sunday started out a bit soggy, and the track looked a bit rough at the starting line. Those guys working on the track did an amazing job getting the track ready after all the overnight rain. Day two racing went Check out - SledFreak.com off without a hitch, and the racers amazed the crowds once again, including the Junior racers during the annual Kitty Kat Races. I’m already looking forward to Snow Bash 2014. Thank you to Carl and the entire crew that make this event such a success year after year!

There was a great crowd on hand.

The kids’ class is always a hit.

The racing action was red hot.

EC4WDA Region B Holds Benefit Race in Kempton, PA Oct. 5-6, 2013 • By: Monte A. Hayes

they also held a long jump contest. It became a real disaster when Kit Kahm’s attempted the jump, ending with him nose-diving his alcohol machine and causing major damage. He walked away a little sore. The alcohol machines went on to thrill the crowd, with Jeremy Dietrich standing his on the nose in the back field. Brent Stanley had to follow suit and also put his over in the back field. The long jump went to Billy Henon at 79 feet. Whenever money is involved, Billy always comes out on top. Jesse Seltzer and Scott Kohler came in a close second and third. Amanda Ruhe had the longest jump for the women with just over 50 feet. On Sunday morning, Lee O’Donnell, the driver of the Monster Truck Ironman, stopped by on his way to race in Australia. He passed out cases of shirts and tees from his sponsors to the junior racers, and they were delighted to receive the awesome shirts. The Jr. Racer chairman Kurt Schenberger was on hand to give out the top ten in point trophies. Thanks went out to John Foieri Trucking and Stanley Sweeping for the donations of the trophies and participation awards. All participating Jr. racers received a participation award. We ran our long obstacle course on Sunday afternoon. As always, Team Fujimo set up a fast heads up course to make the day very exciting. During this race we were able to determine both our women’s and open division champions. The presentation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, at our awards banquet. Thanks for a wonderful race season, and hope to see you all next year. Please visit our website at www.ec4wdaregionb.org

On Oct. 5 and 6 in Kempton, Pa., the East Coast 4-Wheel Drive Association (EC4WDA) Region B held its Benefit Race. With a year high of 126 competitors for the weekend, the race looked to be really intense from the start, and the championships in the women’s and open division came down to the wire. We started with the 100-yard sand drags, which were presented by the Phantom Race Club. They chose to stagger the classes to prevent a backlog. Oops! It only worked for a short time. Then the carnage began; vehicles that had been pushed to their limits all season started to show their wear. They encountered a lot of breakdowns. We did double eliminations, giving everyone extra seat time. In women’s C class, Debbie Hayes beat Mary Auman with a slower 5.3et to Mary’s faster 5.1et. It was a classic case of the teacher getting schooled by the student. The open division got off to a terrible start, with our normally very dependable starting lights acting up and then shutting us down. After a 45-minute delay, the lights were up and running again. The race turned out to be a very troublesome one, with all kinds of carnage among the competitors. This included the picking up of my broken racer from the front and the back and carrying it off the track. Jack Purcell seemed to have gotten his jeep right with a 4.6et in his class. Bryan Follin Jr., however, had to withdraw his new racer because of the change of the class order, so he could maintain his points for Bristol Stump. Our special thanks to the 4 Wheel Drive Trailblazers for their donation of the lights. During the Figure 8 under the lights presented by In The Circle Club,

PaOHV RecRider Article

ATV Simulator By: Dick Lepley Part of the PaOHV mission is promoting safe and responsible motorized recreation, and for the last couple of years we have been putting together a program that will have a major impact on the way our sport is perceived by others and how it is practiced by participants. The story began three years ago when I met Chris McNeil at the NOHVCC (National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council) national conference in Great Falls, Mont. Chris was operating out of Wyoming at the time. He is a certified ATV safety trainer, and he was seeking a way to take the message of ATV safety and responsible use to large numbers of folks without the need to actually engage them in “real time” riding scenarios. The result was an operator-controlled ATV simulator, which can also be adapted to handle a dirt bike or snowmobile. Chris’s main interest is getting the message about safe and responsible riding to younger people, and he has reached thousands of kids since he first put the simulator to work. The PaOHV board agreed that an ATV simulator would be a great way to reach existing and potential riders to spread the message of safe and responsible ATV use. Working with the DCNR, we have been able to secure two grants that allowed us to purchase an all-aluminum, fully enclosed 16’ Triton trailer, one of McNeil’s ATV simulators, and the ancillary items needed to round out the program. We also teamed up with Yamaha and are using one of their 125cc four-wheelers on the simulator; a Yamaha 550 quad to load, unload, and move the sim unit where needed; and

a super-quiet Yamaha 3,000 watt generator for remote power. The simulator is an extension of our nationally acclaimed SCORE program, which you can learn more about at www.paohv.org. Just click on the Training and Safety link. Our simulator is the only one east of the Mississippi, and it will prove to be an excellent complement to the efforts of the ASI/DCNR trainers across Pennsylvania. It’s important to understand that the sim unit is not a substitute for actual ATV safety training, which we heartily encourage for all riders. Instead, it is a way of teaching young and old alike how rider position and body movement influence machine control, the importance of matching the size of the machine to the age and capability of the rider, and the use of safety gear designed for off-road use. All this can be accomplished in a “classroom” setting with the person on the ATV moving with the sim unit in a manner that duplicates climbing, descent, and left and right attitudes. PaOHV was invited to attend the PRPS Greenways Summit in September in Franklin, Pa., and it was the perfect platform to unveil the ATV simulator. The presentation put on by Denny Mann, Eric Bruggeman, and myself was well attended and enthusiastically received. The photos will give you a better idea of what we’ve accomplished. The applications for the ATV simulator are many, and if you feel the program would benefit your efforts, contact PaOHV through our website to discuss possibilities. In the meantime ... ride safely and responsibly.

The Tug Hill Experience Lewis County, NY • Sept. 21-22, 2013

We headed north in late September to take part in the 2013 ATV Manufacturers Outdoor Trade Show and Expo, held at the Flat Rock Inn and promoted by the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association. This was my second trip to this event in as many years, and the organizers continue to add more to it each year. Several things that have been consistent are the friendly folks who put the event together and the rain that likes to inhabit the region on this weekend every year. Last year I traveled alone, but to my delight, my Rec Riding crew was able to make the trip this time. So we loaded up the machines and off we went. We arrived Friday evening to the hospitality of the Ridge View Lodge just outside of Lowville, N.Y. The trip took us a few hours, and as we arrived, the guys were amazed by all the windmills in the area. A few of us hit the racks, but Brady and Jimmy unloaded a few of our dual sport bikes and went out for a two-hour night ride. They were amazed at the endless miles of terrain they could ride, even at night, and still find their way back to the motel. The next day they were stoked as they told us all about their ride. We were up early on Saturday, and after a good breakfast, we hit the vendor area at the Flat Rock Inn located right on the trail system. This location is prime for this type of event, as it is sort of a hub for the entire county. There is a bar and restaurant here along with a few rooms for lodging. One of the big attractions is the 125-spot campground complete with some of the finest bath houses I’ve ever seen at a camping area. In

addition, there is a huge pond where water cross events take place. You can rent both ATVs and snowmobiles here depending on the season, and you can ride in either direction for miles, so you could come for a week and ride a different route every day. That’s the other nice feature about this area: You buy your NY permit and you go. You can find everything that you need while out riding. I wish Pennsylvania would take some lessons from these folks. There’s nothing better than arriving at your location, unloading your ride, and forgetting about it until you return a day, week, or month later. Whatever you need, it’s out there. You’ll be traveling along and – bam – there’s a restaurant or a gas station. How cool is that? Much of the trail system is seasonal-type roads with pockets of riding area off the roads. The guys went out for an 80-mile ride on Sunday with some friendly guides from the ATV Association. They were gone close to four hours and returned with smiles on their faces. Whatever you like, they say, it’s out there. Me, I stayed at the vendor area and worked, but hey, somebody’s got to do it. The other great thing about this area is that it operates year round. When the ATV season ends, the snowmobile season takes off. No matter what you like to do, you can find it here. The area is also known for some of the best fishing on the East Coast. So don’t take our word for it. Check out www.lewiscountychamber. org to plan your trip, then load up and head for the Hill, the Tug Hill that is.

Snowscoot – The Bicycle Snow Machine… www.snowscootusa.com More Winter Fun

Join the Snowscoot revolution! This is like “BMX on the Snow,” and it’s the perfect crossover from summer sports to winter sports! The Snowscoot is easy and safe to use, and you won’t find a better way to ride the slopes; it doesn’t matter your age or skill level. Created in 1991, the Snowscoot has thousands of hours of testing, racing, and freestyle under its boards. It’s a well-designed, proven product made to perform on any type of snow and terrain. So if you want to “part from the pack,” and if you’re looking for a new sensation, the Snowscoot just may be for you!

FAQ...

How do you ride the Snowscoot? The patented Snowscoot is the fusion of riding a bike and snowboarding. Like skiing or snowboarding, you steer by managing speed while shifting your weight from edge to edge, allowing for smooth turning and maximum control.

Can I ride it in a terrain park? The Snowscoot can be ridden in any terrain park that resorts will permit. How do you stop? You can slow down and stop by using the edges on the rear snowboard like skiing or snowboarding. Similar to a hokey stop, you can stop the Snowscoot quickly and accurately by sliding the rear board outwards on its uphill edge. How do you get on and off the chairlift? Make sure your Snowscoot leash is secured to your leg or ankle. When the chair lift approaches, position the Snowscoot directly in front of you. As the lift scoops you up, allow the handle bars to rest on your lap and let the Snowscoot hang below you. The handle bars will support the Snowscoot for chair lift transportation. Cross your legs and ankles around the front of the Snowscoot and enjoy the ride. Is it safe? Riding a Snowscoot is safer than skiing and snowboarding because there are no locking bindings to restrict movement of your legs if you should fall. The Snowscoot comes with a heavy duty surf leash for added safety while riding and during chairlift transportation. You can easily drag a foot or step off the Snowscoot to regain balance and control as opposed to falling. If you were to fall over, the handlebars and board edges resting on their sides will prevent the Snowscoot from sliding downhill. It’s also a little easier on knees and ankles since you’re not attached to a board. Also, you can step off easily to push if you slow down too much or you go uphill.

Down By The River Hosted By Back Mountain Enduro Riders

An ECEA Hare Scramble Event • September 21 – 22, 2013 • Stories and Photos By: Joann Hauser The Back Mountain Enduro Riders (BMER) hosted an ECEA (East Coast Harescramble Association) harescramble event, “Down By the River,” in Plymouth, Pa. This two-day event had a variety of terrain, grass track, tight rooted trails, mud, and a great view. BMER brought in a great number of riders for this two-day event. Day one the weather held out for the Fast Kids, making riding conditions over all great for the 50cc, pee-wee and the youth. Taking the win for the 50cc class was Joseph Rainone, with his fastest lap time of 4:14 in the second lap. Joseph Scotto III of Pee-wee took the overall win, with his fastest lap time of 4:43 in his fifth lap. Kyle Tino took the win for the overall youth, fastest lap time of 14:56 in his second lap. As day two approached the rain moved in overnight, making the track slippery and technical. First up to ride the now challenging track were the morning racers. Taking the O/A win for the morning race was Kenneth Kasprzak of Pittsgrove, N.J., who rode in the Schoolboy class. He holds second place overall in standings

A few of the ECEA Fast Kids

for the year. After the morning race, the condition of the track seemed to be perfect for the main event, with the overall win going to Tegan Robert Temple of West Chester, Pa.; second place went to Jerod Stone of Lewisberry, Pa., who is still holding first for overall for the year; and third went to William Schoeneberg of Forked River N.J. I do have to say the Back Mountain Enduro Riders hosted a great event, and the crew worked so hard to make it happen. Thank you also to the landowner! BMER is a small club (100 members) and is always looking for new members. It is amazing what a great event they put on. Taking into consideration how many members they actually had working on this course to get it ready for race day, with just a handful for a crew and help from other clubs, they did an amazing job. So if you have not yet joined a club, maybe it’s time to consider the Back Mountain Enduro Riders. Again, thank you ECEA, Back Mountain Enduro Riders and volunteers for such a great event.

It’s usually a little wet at “Down by the River.”

Rocket Raceway was rocked by Green Marble Enduro Riders when they hosted their Rocket Raceway Hare Scramble on September 28 & 29 Green Marble Enduro Riders (GMER) hosted an incredible Harescramble that was fit for all ages. This two-day event started on Saturday, Sept. 28, where first up at the track was the ECEA Fast KIDS. The condition of the track was dry, but thanks to the water truck, the crew, and the club members, the moto remained wet and safe. As day two got underway, the sun was shining, and first up were the morning racers. They had a track length of 8 miles and riders rode for 1.5 hours. The trails on Sunday were dusty, but as riders thinned out after

the first lap, it wasn’t all that bad. Approximately 100 riders showed up for this morning event, with Kenneth Kasprzek taking the overall for the morning. As for the main event, there were another 100 riders showing up to hit the moto and dusty trails, and they raced for 2 hours on a track 10 miles long. Jerod Stoner took the win overall, with Ethan Walters in second and William Shoeneburg in third. It was a great day of racing at Rocket Raceway, and GMER really rocked a great event. Thank you GMER, Rocket Raceway, and ECEA for another outstanding event.

Jaden Palmer shows his little sis how it’s done.

Pine Barons Enduro Rider Sahara Sands Harescramble October 5-6, 2013 Pine Barons Enduro hosted their two day Annual Sahara Sands Harescramble event in Eagleswood Township, N.J. This event had much to offer riders of all ages, with mostly new trails this year. Many things took place at this event, including a Fun Factory bounce house for the kids, Mr. Softee Ice Cream, and a Surf moto Saturday night after the youth event. It was an exciting weekend for all, bringing in over 400 riders to be a part of the weekend. The kids truly enjoyed the bounce house and Mr. Softee after the race. The bounce house offered the children a way to loosen up before their race, and the ice cream help to fill their bellies with a yummy goodie after. All this led to an exciting day at the races. The course was dry and dusty. The first up to race were the 50cc racers, with the overall win going to Joseph Rainone from Little Egg Harbor, N.J., riding in the (4-8) 50cc open class. Next to hit the track were the Pee-Wees, with Wayne Cox of Dorchester, N.J., taking the win for the overall. As three o’clock approached, the riders lined up for the main youth event, waiting patiently at the line to hit the course. Kyle Tino of Phillipsburg, N.J., took the overall win for the youth event, and he is still holding first for the overall standing for the year. Saturday night brought an new meaning to moto for some. A Surf Moto Competition was sponsored by Surf Unlimited Surf Shop and Trapani’s Racing. This is an event where riders who also surf compete against each other, holding a moto one day and the surf competition the next. After it’s all over, they combine the overall scores together to get the winner. It was a thrill to watch this event, and as of now, Jess Smith and Kevin

29

Cheeseman are in the lead. The surf portion of this event has not yet taken place due to the waves not being large enough; they had to put it off until the conditions were perfect for surfing. As Sunday rolled around, the morning riders geared up to hit the course. First up for the day were the morning racers, with the overall win going to Michael Medeiros of Freehold, N.J., who is a member of Motor Cycle Competition INC. The main event followed, with Shane Hufford Jr, a member of Brandy Wine Enduro Riders, taking the win back home to Pennsylvania with first place overall for the main event. Second place went to Michael Lafferty of Millville, N.J., and third went to Tegan Robert Temple of West Chester, Pa. A big thanks needs to go out to all that worked so hard for this event: Pine Barons Enduro Riders, ECEA, EMS, Eagles Wood Fire Department, MCI, and SJER, along with the many sponsors: Moose, Rocky Mountain, Pit Posse, MT Holly KTM, Trapani, Riderz Inc, and many others. Thank you for such a great event for the Fast Kids and all the riders that turned out to hit those dry dusty, dirty trails. Please view overall race results for all ECEA events at: www. ecea.org, and check out more photos from the events at: http://s1108.photobucket.com/user/eveningstarsmn/profile

ALL STAR SERIES: ROUND 16 2nd ANNUAL RANDY TEXTER MEMORIAL YORK FAIRGROUNDS • Constantine Clobbers York All-Star Half Mile By Len & Ben Breech • YORK, PA. SEP. 28 New York’s Jake Constantine swept the Expert portion of the Second Annual Randy Texter Memorial race at the racing portion of the White Rose Thunder at the York Expo Center. This was the final event of the Steve Nace All-Star National Flat Track Series for 2013. In addition to wins in Expert Singles and Pro/Expert Twins classes, Constantine also won his heat and Dash For Cash in both divisions. Jeremy Higgins took the Singles lead from Corey Crawford, Constantine, Raun Wood and Cory Texter. Crawford and Constantine were by Higgins by the end of the first lap, with Constantine taking the lead on the second lap. By the fifth lap, Texter had moved into fourth, with Chad Cose taking fifth off two. Crawford fell on the next lap, bringing out the red flag. Off the restart, Constantine again took control over Higgins, Cose, Texter and Jake Shoemaker. After winning this class last year in the race named for his late father, Texter just nipped Cose at the line for the third and final podium spot. Shawn Baer led the Pro/Expert Twins out of two with Crawford, Constantine, Shoemaker and Jason Isennock right behind. Crawford took the lead starting the second lap, but Constantine was in front on the following lap. Shoemaker then moved to challenge Baer and Crawford for second, taking it on the sixth lap. Baer got by Crawford for the last podium spot on the last lap. Another New York rider, Justin Jones, topped the Pro Singles final, taking the lead from Jeff Lowery, Cody Johncox, Jamison Minor and Mike Poe. Johncox took second off four on the opening lap, while Minor and Poe began battling for third spot on the following lap. Poe dropped out around the sixth lap. Amateur support classes showed what exciting riders are coming up.

Open Singles had Hunter Edwards leading Jarod Vanderkooi, Tristan Avery, Tyler Phillips and Colin Cunningham. Vanderkooi took the lead off four on the third lap, with Cunningham getting by Phillips for fourth. Edwards retook the lead down the back stretch on the fifth lap and held on for a close win. The 450 Amateur final was deja vu at the front, with Vanderkooi leading Edwards and Lloyd McCoy, Phillips, Avery and Ryan Varnes behind. Avery got rolling on the third lap, taking fourth into one on the third lap, getting McCoy for third off two right afterwards. By the start of the third lap, Vanderkooi had a few lengths on Edwards for the lead. Flea-sized Kevin Stollings jumped in front of Brandon Price and Avery at the start of the 250 final. Stollings had control after a lap, while Price and Avery battled for second, which Price held after halfway. This year a second Amateur event was held on Sunday. Several youth and two more age classes were added, while the Pro and Expert Singles classes were combined, pitting the previous day’s winners against each other. Pro winner Justin Jones took the lead right away from Shoemaker, Constantine and Poe. After a brief early battle, Constantine took control of second from Poe and Shoemaker after three laps. He started cutting into Jones’ margin but came up three lengths short. The 450 and Open Single classes again had Vanderkooi and Edwards splitting wins, with Tristan Avery third both times. In his sixth and final event of the weekend, Avery finally broke through with a win in the 250 Amateur class. He battled Brandon Price in the early laps, before taking the lead on the third lap and holding off his challengers for the win.
